Brewery news USA: Bud Light sales continue to plunge but sister brands beginning to recover
Bud Light sales continued to plunge as the nation’s No. 1 beer brand continues to lose share to runner-up Modelo Especial — but its sister brands are beginning to recover from the disastrous marketing partnership with Dylan Mulvaney, the New York Post reported on June 13.

Sales of Bud Light dropped 24.4% in the week ended June 3 — slightly worse than the 23.9% decline over the previous week which had included steep discounting over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to data from Bump Williams Consulting and NielsenIQ.

Meanwhile, Anheuser-Busch’s Michelob Ultra — the nation’s third-biggest brand by sales — turned positive for the first time in weeks with a 0.7% sales increase versus a 0.1% decline the previous week.

Elsewhere, Anheuser-Busch beers continued to drop, although at a slower rate.

The flagship Budweiser brand’s sales were down 7.8% vs. 8.5% while Natural Light’s sales were down 1.0% vs. a 1.5% decline and sales of Busch Light were were down 0.8% vs. a 3.0% decline over the same period.

“The majority of Anheuser-Busch InBev brands showed an improvement in trend declines versus the prior week,” said Bump Williams, head of the eponymous consulting firm, in a statement. “Perhaps this is the turning point.”

Meanwhile, sales ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Corp. president expects ‘a challenging year’ for the company
Ramon S. Ang, president of conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC), on June 13 said he would be “thankful” if the company’s performance this year would match its 2022 results, the BusinessMirror reported.

Ang said during the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting that 2023 will be “a challenging year” because of high inflation, higher cost of borrowing and the fluctuation of crude prices in the world market. He also noted the reduced power and food demand.

“So, but despite all of that, because the company is doing everything we can, our first quarter is still good,” Ang said.

“But, you know, if we compare 2022, which is a national election year, the volume is definitely much better than this year, 2023. So, if we can at least match the previous year’s performance, I think we should be very thankful.”

In 2022, San Miguel’s net income fell 44 percent to P26.76 billion from the previous year’s P48.16 billion.

Excluding the effects of foreign exchange and the CREATE Law, or Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Act, its net income reached P43.21 billion, still lower than the previous year’s P47.04 billion.

For 2022, it had record revenues of P1.5 trillion, some 60 percent higher than the previous year’s P941.19 ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Beer and quasi-beer sales grow 1% in May
Japanese sales of beer and quasi-beer products in May grew 1 pct from a year before, according to data from four major beer companies.

The rise reflected a 20 pct increase in sales to restaurants and bars thanks to stronger demand for eating out amid the Golden Week holiday period. The brisk demand also reflected an increase in foreign tourists.

Sales rose 4 pct for beer and 24 pct for "happoshu" quasi-beer, while so-called third segment beer-like beverages incurred a drop of 10 pct.

By maker, Suntory Spirits Ltd. logged beer and quasi-beer sales growth of 16 pct in volume, led by a 13 pct rise marked by the Perfect Suntory beer.

Sapporo Breweries Ltd. posted a 5 pct rise in sales volume, while Asahi Breweries Ltd. saw its sales in value expand 4 pct.

Brewery news Australia: Non-alcoholic beer industry booming in Australia
The non-alcoholic beer industry is booming as Australians cut back on booze, with alcohol consumption hitting the lowest levels in decades, the Sydney Morning Herald reported on June 11.

Endeavour Group, the parent company of Dan Murphy’s and BWS, reported one in 10 customers had bought a low- or zero-alcohol product across the past 12 months. Asahi Beverages – which accounts for almost half of the Australian beer market – said non-alcoholic beer sales had tripled in three years, and mid-strength, low- and zero-alcohol drinks made up 30 per cent of their total beer sales.

Australia’s non-alcoholic beer market is expected to grow 9.16 per cent a year, pulling in an estimated A$289 million in revenue this year.

IWSR Drinks Market Analysis found, it’s not teetotallers driving global growth, but Millennials cutting back on their consumption: 78 per cent of no- and low-alcohol consumers also drink full-strength alcohol.

The trend was obvious at the Sydney International Convention Centre Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular craft beer festival last weekend, where stallholders noticed non-alcoholic options became more popular as the day progressed.

Lauran Vohmann started drinking non-alcoholic beers after completing dry January last year.

“It’s something you can have in a social situation, and it feels much less weird ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: New barley variety expected to advance Australia’s barley production and potentially increase value of national industry
The Australian Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis on June 9 unveiled a new barley variety that is being hailed as ‘the one’ to advance barley production in Australia and potentially increase the value of the national industry by A$110 million annually, the Australian Manufacturing reported.

The high-performance variety named Neo, the Greek word for new, is claimed to be well suited to medium to high rainfall environments boasting strong pest and disease resistance and superior grain quality characteristics.

Neo, which was recently submitted for malting barley accreditation, was created by locally based breeding company InterGrain, co-owned by the Western Australian Government and the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

The naturally bred variety is a product of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s Cereal Doubled Haploid Program, accelerating the development of breeding lines tailored to Australian conditions.

“Neo barley reflects its name – a modern variety, ahead of its time and bred using the latest plant breeding technology to generate a leap in production and malting performance,” said Minister Jarvis.

He underscored that this new variety will help Australia maintain its position as a leader in the world when it comes to supplying premium barley to discerning domestic and foreign markets.
