Brewery news USA, OH: Twin Oast Brewing Co. announces acquisition of Catawba Island Brewing Co.
Twin Oast Brewing Co. has acquired Catawba Island Brewing Co., a deal that is expected to lead to increased production, it was announced on June 13.

Both breweries are based in Port Clinton and are about six miles apart.

The brewery aims to increase production and variety of beers brewed with the additional tank space. The Catawba Island Brewing location will be used for production and distribution only. Sour-beer brewing is scheduled to start this summer with the release of the first barrel-aged sours in 2024.

Twin Oast was started in 2018, its name derived from a hop-drying house. The brewery concentrates on fruited sour ales using ingredients sourced directly from Quinstock Farms, the brewery’s home. In addition to fruits from the farms, yeasts and other cultures from the orchards are used in the brewing process.

The Roder family founded Catawba Island Brewing Co. in 2013. Twin Oast will brew Catawba Island’s Hot Blonde, the brewery announced.

A “last call” sale of Catawba Island Brewing products and merchandise is set for Saturday, June 24.

“The acquisition of Catawba Island Brewing helps us lean into our Farm-to-Fermenter vision,” Twin Oast co-founder Cory Smith said in a press release. “It allows us to use the former CIBC taproom ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Leland Brewing Co. to launch in Leland’s Gateway District on June 16
People around Leland’s Gateway District have been waiting months for its first brewery to open. Now, the official opening day for Leland Brewing Co. is set for Friday, June 16. It sits on a five-acre site at 133 Old Fayetteville Road across the street from Founders Park and Leland Town Hall - also known as 2115 Ale Ave., the Star News Online reported on June 15.

Some may remember when the project was announced as a business called 7twenty6. During the course of getting the plans finalized, partners Chris LaCoe, Mark Said, Nick Floyd, and brewer Ethan Hall changed the name but the vision remained. Here’s a look at what to expect from the new brewery.

The 5,000-square-foot brewery has a flexible, industrial design.

“So many breweries are just square spaces,” LaCoe said. “We want this to be a place where there are multiple places to hang out.”

The primary brewery building has both indoor and outdoor spaces, upstairs and downstairs. As you enter, you see a long, epoxy-coated concrete bar with a live edge. Upstairs, there's a smaller lounge with sofas and North Carolina-shaped tables.

A “front porch” area has picnic tables, chairs and the balcony will feature a series of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Three Little Birds Distillery and Hop Hill Brewing Company to open second locations alongside each other in Lower Saucon Township
A Lehigh Valley brewery and distillery are expanding operations and bringing craft beer, cocktails and fun with friends back to a familiar site, 69News reported on June 15.

Three Little Birds Distillery, at 1955 Willow Lane in Lower Macungie Township, and its sister company, Hop Hill Brewing Company, at 1988 Blair Ave. in Lower Saucon Township, are planning to open second locations alongside each other at the end of June at 201 N. Main Lane in Lehighton, according to owner Greg Smith, who operates both businesses.

The Lehighton building previously housed Insurrection Distillery, a micro-distillery offering grain-to-glass spirits, which announced its closure in April and held its final inventory sale on June 10.

"We're hoping to do a couple of weekend pop-up nights, starting June 23 or 24, and then we'd be open the entire week of Fourth of July before starting our regular hours," Smith said.

Three Little Birds, a nod to Smith and his wife's three children, opened a year ago in a renovated, 120-year-old barn that the distillery shares with Rising River Brewing Co., while Hop Hill opened in 2017 in an updated garage bay off of Route 378.

Smith had been looking to open a second location of Hop Hill ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Broad Street Brewing to open its doors in Bristol on June 30
After nine years in the making, Broad Street Brewing will open the doors of its flagship brewery and tasting room on June 30 in Bristol, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Co-owners Ed Webber and Brandon Wellington purchased the name in 2014 from a shuttered Iowa brewery and have been planning the concept ever since.

The Bucks County residents, who have been home brewing for a few years, were originally planning to open their brewery in conjunction with Jericho Mountain Beef, their Newtown micro cattle ranch. However, Jericho Mountain did not come across as many obstacles during the opening process and got it up and running by 2020.

The initial brick-and-mortar space for Broad Street Brewing will accommodate about 80 people. It will have eight beers on tap which will be expanded to 12 after a month in operation.

Among the brewery’s signature beers are Independence Lager, 76 and Sunny, and Hey Yo! Hazy.

The brewery also plans on hosting a rotating lineup of food trucks. Customers will also be able to get food at Sal’s Italian Deli of Bristol which has leased space on the property.

Brewery news USA, WA: Ice Harbor Brewery very close to opening new brewery in Kennewick
More than three months ago, Ice Harbor Brewery shut down its operation on Benton Street in Kennewick, Washington. The company is now very close to opening a new brewery and pub down the street on Bruneau Avenue. Apparently, they are 95 percent there, but getting across the finish line is presenting challenges, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 14.

“We know there have been rumors circulating that Ice Harbor BruPub is already open,” Ice Harbor Brewery said on social media. “We are sorry to say that is NOT the case, but it’s true we had hoped to host our soft open [last] weekend and hit the ground running on Monday. Unfortunately, we are still encountering multiple delays and snags beyond our control, so our open date is still not set.”

Though it was hard to say goodbye to the cozy old place on Benton Street, the new location will offer more elbow room, sprawling across 14,000 square feet, which means more room for customers and also more room for the kitchen and for the brewery. Ice Harbor says that it cost $1 million to renovate the space but it would have cost five times that much to build a new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Plans for microbrewery near Kings Mountain under county review
Plans for a microbrewery near Kings Mountain have stalled after county commissioners voted to send the issue back to the planning department for further review, the Shelby Star reported on June 13.

The plans attracted some attention from residents in the neighborhood, which is located on Stony Point Road, and several spoke out against the plans during a recent meeting of county commissioners.

Commissioners first discussed amending the county’s unified development ordinance definitions to allow microbreweries as a permitted use in the rural agricultural district.

Currently, they’re only allowed in the heavy industrial district.

This amendment, if approved, will define and separate microbreweries from the beverage and tobacco product manufacturing category and allow them in the rural agriculture district with a zoning permit.

The planning board voted unanimously to recommend approval and determined that the use of a microbrewery in the rural agriculture district was consistent with similar uses of a winery and distillery, which are already permitted in the rural agricultural district.

A microbrewery is defined as primarily engaged in the production of less than 15,000 barrels of beer per year and may include on-site beverage and food services.

Even if the text amendment was approved, commissioners would still need to vote and approve ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Villains Brewing Co. holds grand opening in Anaheim
On the evening of Friday, June 9, a line of beers lovers snaked down Anaheim Boulevard and around the corner onto West Water Street, waiting to get into Villains Brewing Co. in Anaheim, the Los Angeles Times reported on June 13.

“It’s been like this since 11 a.m.,” a security guard marveled.

The grand opening of the new brewery from Smoke & Fire’s Isaias Hernandez drew crowds throughout the day and into the night.

“It is family affair; it is what we do best,” said Hernandez. “It is hospitality wrapped into beer, wrapped into an artisanal approach to food.”

Hernandez started Smoke & Fire Social Eatery with partners Josh Bentrem and Juan Hernandez, combining corporate restaurant experience that collectively includes Red Robin, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill and Raising Canes Chicken Fingers. Known for its barbecue, Smoke & Fire boasts locations in Pomona, Paramount and La Habra, while Craft by Smoke & Fire, at the nearby Anaheim Center Street Promenade, leans more toward a steakhouse-style, full-service restaurant.

“We opened up Craft by Smoke & Fire because we are all full-service people,” Hernandez said. “That is our full-service brand that has a full liquor license and does craft cocktails with craft barbecue.”

Brewery news USA, CT: Developer scales back West Haven brewery plan amid pushback
Facing accepting city officials but lawsuits from somewhat less enthusiastic neighbors, a developer now is offering a less ambitious proposal for a brewery along West Haven’s shoreline, the New Haven Register reported on June 13.

Doug Gray, a developer for a proposal that would lease land from the city to build a brewery that would become the new home of the Woodbridge-based New England Brewing Co., presented the West Haven City Council with a new lease proposal this week, nine months after the council approved a lease for a 52.000-square-foot combined brewery, taproom and event space facility.

Plans to begin tearing down the abandoned and decaying conference center that sits at the 6 Rock St. site to initiate construction were halted when the development was served two lawsuits from neighbors on both sides of the site — the Jimmies of Savin Rock restaurant and the Land Trust of West Haven that maintains an adjacent conservation easement.

“There's an old adage in real estate that time kills all deals," Gray said. “With the lawsuits that were pending, who knows what was going to happen.”

Gray said that, although he believes both lawsuits are "frivolous," they were burning up one of the brewery's most valuable commodities: ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Anderby Brewing & Distilling to close on July 3rd
Anderby Brewing & Distilling, based in Peachtree Corners, Georgia announced they will close effectively July 3rd after five years of operation. According to an Instagram post announcement, revenues never reached the levels the brewery had hoped, the Beer Street Journal reported on June 13.

“Unfortunately, due a variety of circumstances, revenues have never reached a level where our operation can sustain itself. We have personally given everything we have; money, sweat, tears, health, etc. to keep things going. While we know there are a lot of great things coming to our area that we were excited to be a part of, we have nothing left to give,” the company said.

Anderby Brewing is another in a line of recent brewery closures in Georgia – including Orpheus Brewing, Burnt Hickory Brewing, Second Self Brewing, Tantrum Brewing, and Sabbath Brewing.

Brewery news USA, MI: Reed City Brewing not coming to Cadillac
Reed City Brewing making another surprising announcement that they won’t be moving to Cadillac after all, 9&10 News reported on June 15.

The decision comes after some back and forth from the brewery on whether they were moving into the old Long Road Distillers building.

Courtney Murphy, a co-owner, said the brewery is leasing the building, still waiting on licensing at the federal level, in order to move forward. But right now, they are paying for a building they can’t use and are losing money, giving them no choice but to pull out.

“We wanted to be in Cadillac. We think the community is awesome and they’ve been 100% supportive and at the end of the day, it just comes down to we have a lot of money going out and nothing coming in, so it’s just not feasible right now,” said Murphy.

Murphy said they hope to revisit this business venture in the future. In the meantime, they are working on getting their beer into other local establishments in the Cadillac area to make up for the loss.

Barley news France: Dry and hot weather causing concern for spring crops in France
The impact of dry and hot weather in many parts of France this month is causing concern for spring crops such as maize and sunflower seed, but rainfall forecast next week will likely be helpful, farm office FranceAgriMer said on June 15.

On the other hand winter crops, which are near harvesting, have less suffered from the harsh weather and the yield potential remains quite high, Benoit Pietrement, a crop farmer and head of FranceAgriMer's grain committee, also said.

"For grains in the large (producing) regions, the potential is still there for winter crops. We are far more worried for spring crops," he told reporters.

Winter wheat and barley crops grown in deep soils should see high yields, while superficial soils will be more affected by the dry weather.

Pietrement's comments on winter crops echoed those by crop institute Arvalis to Reuters on June 14.

Dry, warm conditions across northern Europe, including major grain belts in the north of France, have caused concern in international markets as summer harvesting approaches.

After one month of dry weather, weather forecaster Meteo France expects rainfall from Monday to Friday in large grain-producing regions.

"In the current situation any water is very positive. Of course for those who have started harvesting ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: Global brewers increasingly interested in sorghum market possibilities
Nigeria has an opportunity to profit from the multi-billion dollar sorghum market as global beer makers are canvassing the increased use of sorghum for brewing, the Business Day reported on June 16.

According to VLB Berlin, a German-based educational institution in the global brew industry, European brewers are looking for more sustainable, affordable, and versatile brewing ingredients and sorghum is becoming an increasingly popular choice compared to barley.

“There is a growing demand for sorghum compared to barley due to reasons such as sustainability, affordability, unique flavour, and growing demand for gluten-free beer,” Billy Zafack, industrial manager at Castel Group, the largest French wine producer told BusinessDay.

He added, “Sorghum is a drought-resistant crop that can be grown in different climates, making it a more sustainable option than barley, the traditional brewing ingredient. Sorghum requires less water and fertiliser than barley, and it is less susceptible to pests and diseases”.

Jens Eiken, global product manager, the beer division of International Flavors & Fragrances, said the cost of sorghum is lower than the cost of barley, which can help brewers to keep their prices low.

“Sorghum has a unique flavour that can be used to create different types of beer. Sorghum beers can have a sweeter, ...More info on site
