USA: Bud Light sees its worst sales drop in the week ending June 10
|
Bud Light has suffered its worst weekly sales drop following its disastrous partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, the Daily Mail reported on June 21.
The beer's sales dropped 26.8 percent for the week ending June 10, the worst week-on-week performance since its early April advertising campaign resulted in a swift backlash.
It's a deeper drop from the week ending on June 3, which saw a 24.4 percent drop, according to Bump Williams Consulting and NielsenIQ. The new low beats the previous worst - an almost 26 percent drop - for the week ending May 25.
It comes after Bud Light lost its crown as America's bestselling beer to Modelo, a Mexican lager brewed by Grupo Modelo - which is also owned by Bud manufacturer Anheuser-Busch.
Anheuser-Busch's other US brands - including Budweiser, Michelob Ultra and Natural Light - have also seen a significant decline in sales since the controversy. Bud is down 10 percent, while Natty Light and Michelob are down 2.3 and 2.4 percent, respectively.
'This was a tough week for Bud Light and other beer brands,' Bump Williams, owner of the consulting company, said.

The Netherlands: Heineken to take full ownership of craft beer maker Oedipus
|
Amsterdam-based craft brewer Oedipus is set to come under the full ownership of Heineken, Het Parool and Nu.nl reported on June 21. Heineken, which previously held a minority stake in the company, acquired the remaining shares of the company earlier this month, to take full ownership of the formerly independent beer business.
Oedipus opened its brewery with an attached bar in 2015. The brewery is renowned for its colorful labels on beers, including Mannenliefde, Thai Thai, and Gaia. They later opened a second cafe location on Javaplein in Amsterdam-Oost.
By that point, Heineken had already bought a minority share in the Amsterdam craft brewery in 2019. According to Frederik van Droffelaar, the current business director at Oedipus, selling a stake to Heineken enabled them to rapidly switch from being focused on the hospitality industry, which was closed during the coronavirus pandemic, to supermarkets, which saw surging levels of sales. He added that the total acquisition is especially welcome now as breweries struggle due to the booming costs of raw materials and electricity as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Malaysia: Carlsberg, Asahi agree not to renew distribution of Asahi beer brand in Malaysia
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (CBMB) and Asahi Group Holdings Ltd have mutually agreed not to renew the exclusive distribution of the Asahi brand or trademark in Malaysia, which expires on Dec 31, 2023, The Star reported on June 19.
In a statement, CBMB managing director Stefano Clini said the group will continue to drive its premiumisation strategy.
“We are in the midst of exploring opportunities to expand our premium portfolio to deliver the best drinking experience to our Malaysian consumers.”
“We have had a great run with Asahi Super Dry, and it is an amicable parting after having the sole rights to locally manufacture, sell and distribute the brand for more than 10 years. Having said that, the group will remain the exclusive distributor of Asahi for 2023 and we will continue to support the brand for the rest of this year,”
The non-renewal of the Asahi agreement is not expected to have any material financial impact to CBMB for the year ending Dec 31, 2023, the brewery said.

UK: Some brewers accused of reducing alcohol content in wake of excise hike
|
Some beer makers in the UK have been accused of reducing the alcohol content of their drinks to pay less tax, keeping prices the same and pocketing the difference, Sky News reported on June 19.
Drinks will be taxed by alcoholic strength from 1 August when a new alcohol duty regime comes into effect.
In anticipation, popular brewers have reduced alcohol content and kept prices the same.
Under the new tax system, producers will save between 2p and 3p per bottle or can.
Brands which have allegedly already reduced alcohol content include Spitfire, Old Speckled Hen, Foster's and Bishops Finger.
A similar move has not been ruled out by big brewers Heineken, Amstel, John Smith's and Newcastle Brown Ale.
Work from the alcohol research group at the University of Sheffield said that if breweries reduced alcohol percentages by just 0.35 they could save an estimated £250m on tax.
In a phenomenon being described as "drinkflation", the alcohol by volume (ABV) for Foster's dropped earlier this year, from 4% to 3.7%.
Similarly, Old Speckled Hen's ABV fell from 5% to 4.8%, Spitfire Amber Ale dropped from 4.5% to 4.2% and Bishops Finger was lowered from 5.4% to 5.2%.

Ukraine: Carlsberg Ukraine launches new production line in Kyiv
|
Carlsberg Ukraine has launched a new production line at the Kyiv Brewery. This is one of the largest investments in 2023, Business Censor reports, citing the company’s press service.
The new automated line will help meet the growing demand for products in cans. It allows for making an additional 40,000 cans every hour. The expansion of the production base will increase the brewery’s production capacity of canned drinks by 80%.
"We will pack everything - beer, cider, kvass. Demand for products in cans is growing. The company decided to invest in a modern production line even before the start of a full-scale war. After the full-scale invasion of Russia, we turned to the Carlsberg Group and confirmed the investment of UAH 1.5 billion," says Oleh Khaidakin, CEO of Carlsberg Ukraine.
The works on the project started in September 2022 and were completed in June 2023.

Australia: Malting, feed barley exports decline in April this year
|
Australia exported 593,671 tonnes of barley and 400,170t of sorghum in April, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported.
The barley figure comprises 470,448t of feed and 123,223t of malting, with the feed total being down 26 percent from the 635,917t shipped in March, and malting total down 12pc for the month.
Vietnam on 122,438t, Japan on 91,644t and Thailand on 91,570t were the volume destinations for feed barley, with Mexico on 99,000t followed by Japan on 20,612t the largest malting markets.
Sorghum exports jumped 73pc for the month from the 231,216t shipped in March to reflect the arrival of new-crop volume, with around three-quarters of it leaving Brisbane in bulk bound for China.
The sorghum harvest is going at full pace in Central Queensland, and is over in New South Wales and southern Qld.
In its Australian Crop Report released on June 6, ABARES forecast the Qld crop now being harvest at 1.69 million tonnes (Mt) over 480,000ha, while the NSW crop is estimated at 760,000t from 190,000ha.

Ukraine: Ukraine’s farmers start the 2023 grain harvest
|
Farmers in Ukraine's southern region of Odesa have started the 2023 grain harvest, threshing the first winter barley, local officials said.
Ukraine is a major global grain grower and exporter, but this year's out is expected to be reduced because of Russia's invasion to around 45 million tonnes from 53 million in 2022.
The agriculture ministry said last week Ukraine's 2023 spring sowing was almost complete at almost 13 million hectares.
The total sown area as of June 16 included 271,100 hectares of spring wheat, 810,000 hectares of barley, 138,500 hectares of peas, 146,200 hectares of oats, 4 million hectares of corn and other commodities.
