Brewery news USA: Bud Light sees its worst sales drop in the week ending June 10
Bud Light has suffered its worst weekly sales drop following its disastrous partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, the Daily Mail reported on June 21.

The beer's sales dropped 26.8 percent for the week ending June 10, the worst week-on-week performance since its early April advertising campaign resulted in a swift backlash.

It's a deeper drop from the week ending on June 3, which saw a 24.4 percent drop, according to Bump Williams Consulting and NielsenIQ. The new low beats the previous worst - an almost 26 percent drop - for the week ending May 25.

It comes after Bud Light lost its crown as America's bestselling beer to Modelo, a Mexican lager brewed by Grupo Modelo - which is also owned by Bud manufacturer Anheuser-Busch.

Anheuser-Busch's other US brands - including Budweiser, Michelob Ultra and Natural Light - have also seen a significant decline in sales since the controversy. Bud is down 10 percent, while Natty Light and Michelob are down 2.3 and 2.4 percent, respectively.

'This was a tough week for Bud Light and other beer brands,' Bump Williams, owner of the consulting company, said.

Since the Anheuser-Busch scandal, the nation's formerly second-largest beer - Modelo - has quickly risen through the ranks, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Longmire Springs Brewing to launch in Packwood on June 24
A new brewery is about to open in Packwood, Washington: Longmire Springs Brewing, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 16.

Opening day is set for June 24th. The couple behind the brewery might seem familiar to Seattle beer lovers: Amy Besunder and Peter Charbonnier formerly owned and operated Populux Brewing in Ballard which closed in December 2020. (Bale Breaker Brewing/Yonder Cider have since moved into the space Populux vacated in Ballard.)

“We’re excited to announce our opening date will be June 24th,” said the company on Facebook. “We’ll have a West Coast IPA, Hazy IPA, Pale Ale, and Pilsner on tap plus a rotating Vienna Lager as well as cider, a guest tap and more. Come join us as we celebrate our grand opening Saturday at noon!”

So how did two brewery owners from Seattle end up in Packwood? Though Populux Brewing closed in 2020, Amy and Peter lived in Packwood for years before that. It’s an idyllic spot, far away from the hustle and bustle of the Ballard Brewery District. A completely different vibe, where Longmire Springs Brewing will serve a different kind of clientele. The brewery’s taproom will offer indoor and outdoor seating in a family- and dog-friendly environment. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Riley’s Brewing Co. building new brewery in Fresno
Riley’s Brewing Co. is building a new brewery, restaurant, taproom, and farmers market event center in Madera’s Riverstone Community, which is part of a 2,000-acre development just north of Fresno, The San Joaquin Valley Sun reported on June 19.

The 12,000-plus square-foot taproom and events center will be a modular space designed to be all ages and inclusive, with a social gathering area for playing games and serving as a farmers market space with local produce and food vendors a few days each week. Riley’s beer garden is expected to open first next year at the end of Business 41 near Avenue 12.

Riley’s Brewing Co. has started the first step of a two-phase project that will build a new brewery, restaurant, taproom, and farmers market event center in Madera’s Riverstone Community. The brewery will be part of the master-planned community off Highway 41 and Avenue 12 in Madera, complementing the Riverwalk center, which already has its own Dutch Bros Coffee, Papi’s Mex Grill, and Fresh Fill convenience store.

Brewery news USA, TX: 5th Element Brewing scheduled to open in Lender on June 30
Local brewpub 5th Element Brewing is scheduled to open on June 30 in Old Town Leander after several years of delays, the Community Impact reported on June 20.

Co-owner Mike Brune said 5th Element Brewing produces artisan beer created with water profiles built from scratch for each different brew. He said the brewpub will feature a beer garden with plans for a dog run and play area for kids in the future.

The brewery was originally set to open at the end of 2018. However, Brune said struggles with the pandemic, supply chain and rising costs caused the opening to be pushed back.

Brune said 5th Element Brewing is “finally ready to open,” and he is “excited to start pouring beers for the community." Located at 100 E. Evans St., Leander, the brewery is owned by Brune along with his wife, Kimberly Destefano-Brune.

The brewpub’s grand opening party is being scheduled for mid-July.

Brewery news USA, OR: Buffalo Rock Brewing Company gets approval to open in Oregon City
Oregon City Council on June 19 unanimously approved a Special Use Exception (SUE) permit for Waterville-based Buffalo Rock Brewing Company to expand its operations and open at the former Oregon Fire Station at the corner of Seaman and Wynn roads.

It would be the first brewing company to open in the city.

The Oregon Planning Commission on May 9 recommended to council that it approve a Special Use Permit at the Seaman Road site.

Troy Burns and his brother Tim, owners of Buffalo Rock Brewing Company in Waterville, were at the planning commission meeting in May and the council meeting on June 19.

The brew pub will manufacture beer on site and have a pub to serve it, according to James Gilmore, commissioner of Building and Zoning. There will also be food trucks, which require a special use permit because they are not allowed in the same spot day after day, according to the city’s zoning code. Future plans also call for an Air BNB that would allow for short term stays by the public. Troy emphasized that the brewery will not be a bar, but a tap room.

“If you’ve been to our facility in Waterville at all, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Monday Night Garden Co. set to open its doors in Charlotte on June 24
Yet another brewery is opening in Charlotte’s South End: Monday Night Garden Co. is set to open its doors at 2217 S. Tryon St. this Saturday, June 24, AOL reported.

Housed in a converted mechanic’s shop and covering 8,000 square feet, it’s draft list will feature craft beers with funky names like Space Lettuce, Blind Pirate, Taco Tuesday, Slap Fight and Dr. Robot Berry Lemon sour, according to a press release. Artisanal, wood-fired pizza cooked in Italian-imported Neapolitan pizza ovens will be featured too.

Monday Night Garden is an offshoot of Monday Night Brewing, which has breweries in Atlanta, Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Two Villains Brewing and Muckraker Beermaker to open first brewery in Vernon in 30 years
It's been nearly a year since Two Villains Brewing shut their doors in Nyack, New York. According to an Instagram post by the team, however, the spot is about to make a comeback — in New Jersey, northjersey.com reported on June 16.

Oh, and even better? It's a boozy collaboration.

"We’re happy to officially announce that Two Villains Brewing and @muckrakerbeer are joining forces to launch the first brewery in Vernon's resort area in 30 years," the team wrote on June 14. "Our goal is to bring both brands together in a mutual and collaborative space where we can provide a little bit of something for everyone."

Muckraker Beermaker is a microbrewery in Franklin known for crafting "wild and spontaneous" beers from local Jersey fruits. The upcoming Vernon project will produce beer under both the Two Villains and Muckraker brands, highlighting and integrating the specific talents of each.

"We go back nearly a decade with Tom of Muckraker," Two Villains wrote online, "Both as avid beer fans and from our days of side-by-side tables at homebrew competitions, and we’re incredibly excited to get started on the next chapter in the journey of both our brands."

What that "journey" looks like for us beverage-lovers in Jersey? ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Stoup Brewing opening its third location as Optimism Brewing is closing
Seattle’s Optimism Brewing is closing, but Stoup Brewing is opening. The Ballard-born Stoup Brewing will soon take over Capitol Hill’s Optimism Brewing. This summer, the location at Broadway and Union Street in Seattle will transform into Stoup Brewing’s third Seattle-area location: Ballard, Kenmore, and now Capitol Hill. The deal is expected to close in August when the state’s paperwork catches up with the businesses’ intentions, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 20.

The changes to the building will be minimal, reflecting Stoup’s branding and colors. Of course, the beers will get “stoupified.” Gay Gilmore and Troy Hakala, who co-founded Optimism Brewing, will retain ownership of the building, but Stoup Brewing will take over the brewery and the taproom. The founders of the two breweries have known each other for over a decade.

Optimism Brewing says that its taproom is the largest in the state when measured by square footage and draft beer sales. “People thought Troy and I were crazy to build such a large taproom in the middle of the city, with a focus on causes and community,” said Gay Gilmore, Optimism’s co-founder. “We are so proud of what we’ve accomplished with Optimism and grateful to our customers all these ...More info on site

A Charlottesville business is shutting its doors after more than a decade, CBS19 News reported on June 19.

Champion Brewing Company announced on June 17 that its last day of operations will be June 30.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the company wrote, “It’s always an emotional journey to start, operate, and wind down a business, but through your support, we accomplished everything we set out to and more. You made a former nondescript officer with a 12-space parking lot into one of the most open and joyous community spaces we can remember.”

The company has been experiencing difficulties in recent months, closing restaurants and scaling back its operations.

Barley news Australia: Malting, feed barley exports decline in April this year
Australia exported 593,671 tonnes of barley and 400,170t of sorghum in April, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported.

The barley figure comprises 470,448t of feed and 123,223t of malting, with the feed total being down 26 percent from the 635,917t shipped in March, and malting total down 12pc for the month.

Vietnam on 122,438t, Japan on 91,644t and Thailand on 91,570t were the volume destinations for feed barley, with Mexico on 99,000t followed by Japan on 20,612t the largest malting markets.

Sorghum exports jumped 73pc for the month from the 231,216t shipped in March to reflect the arrival of new-crop volume, with around three-quarters of it leaving Brisbane in bulk bound for China.

The sorghum harvest is going at full pace in Central Queensland, and is over in New South Wales and southern Qld.

In its Australian Crop Report released on June 6, ABARES forecast the Qld crop now being harvest at 1.69 million tonnes (Mt) over 480,000ha, while the NSW crop is estimated at 760,000t from 190,000ha.

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken to take full ownership of craft beer maker Oedipus
Amsterdam-based craft brewer Oedipus is set to come under the full ownership of Heineken, Het Parool and Nu.nl reported on June 21. Heineken, which previously held a minority stake in the company, acquired the remaining shares of the company earlier this month, to take full ownership of the formerly independent beer business.

Oedipus opened its brewery with an attached bar in 2015. The brewery is renowned for its colorful labels on beers, including Mannenliefde, Thai Thai, and Gaia. They later opened a second cafe location on Javaplein in Amsterdam-Oost.

By that point, Heineken had already bought a minority share in the Amsterdam craft brewery in 2019. According to Frederik van Droffelaar, the current business director at Oedipus, selling a stake to Heineken enabled them to rapidly switch from being focused on the hospitality industry, which was closed during the coronavirus pandemic, to supermarkets, which saw surging levels of sales. He added that the total acquisition is especially welcome now as breweries struggle due to the booming costs of raw materials and electricity as a result of the war in Ukraine.

"We can't avoid it; energy shortage, staff shortages, price increases, everything," Van Droffelaar said. "I'm now very pleased with the cooperation with Heineken, ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg, Asahi agree not to renew distribution of Asahi beer brand in Malaysia
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (CBMB) and Asahi Group Holdings Ltd have mutually agreed not to renew the exclusive distribution of the Asahi brand or trademark in Malaysia, which expires on Dec 31, 2023, The Star reported on June 19.

In a statement, CBMB managing director Stefano Clini said the group will continue to drive its premiumisation strategy.

“We are in the midst of exploring opportunities to expand our premium portfolio to deliver the best drinking experience to our Malaysian consumers.”

“We have had a great run with Asahi Super Dry, and it is an amicable parting after having the sole rights to locally manufacture, sell and distribute the brand for more than 10 years. Having said that, the group will remain the exclusive distributor of Asahi for 2023 and we will continue to support the brand for the rest of this year,”

The non-renewal of the Asahi agreement is not expected to have any material financial impact to CBMB for the year ending Dec 31, 2023, the brewery said.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine’s farmers start the 2023 grain harvest
Farmers in Ukraine's southern region of Odesa have started the 2023 grain harvest, threshing the first winter barley, local officials said.

Ukraine is a major global grain grower and exporter, but this year's out is expected to be reduced because of Russia's invasion to around 45 million tonnes from 53 million in 2022.

The agriculture ministry said last week Ukraine's 2023 spring sowing was almost complete at almost 13 million hectares.

The total sown area as of June 16 included 271,100 hectares of spring wheat, 810,000 hectares of barley, 138,500 hectares of peas, 146,200 hectares of oats, 4 million hectares of corn and other commodities.

Brewery news UK: Some brewers accused of reducing alcohol content in wake of excise hike
Some beer makers in the UK have been accused of reducing the alcohol content of their drinks to pay less tax, keeping prices the same and pocketing the difference, Sky News reported on June 19.

Drinks will be taxed by alcoholic strength from 1 August when a new alcohol duty regime comes into effect.

In anticipation, popular brewers have reduced alcohol content and kept prices the same.

Under the new tax system, producers will save between 2p and 3p per bottle or can.

Brands which have allegedly already reduced alcohol content include Spitfire, Old Speckled Hen, Foster's and Bishops Finger.

A similar move has not been ruled out by big brewers Heineken, Amstel, John Smith's and Newcastle Brown Ale.

Work from the alcohol research group at the University of Sheffield said that if breweries reduced alcohol percentages by just 0.35 they could save an estimated £250m on tax.

In a phenomenon being described as "drinkflation", the alcohol by volume (ABV) for Foster's dropped earlier this year, from 4% to 3.7%.

Similarly, Old Speckled Hen's ABV fell from 5% to 4.8%, Spitfire Amber Ale dropped from 4.5% to 4.2% and Bishops Finger was lowered from 5.4% to 5.2%.

Old Speckled Hen producer and pub chain Greene King said it "continues ...More info on site

Brewery news Ukraine: Carlsberg Ukraine launches new production line in Kyiv
Carlsberg Ukraine has launched a new production line at the Kyiv Brewery. This is one of the largest investments in 2023, Business Censor reports, citing the company’s press service.

The new automated line will help meet the growing demand for products in cans. It allows for making an additional 40,000 cans every hour. The expansion of the production base will increase the brewery’s production capacity of canned drinks by 80%.

"We will pack everything - beer, cider, kvass. Demand for products in cans is growing. The company decided to invest in a modern production line even before the start of a full-scale war. After the full-scale invasion of Russia, we turned to the Carlsberg Group and confirmed the investment of UAH 1.5 billion," says Oleh Khaidakin, CEO of Carlsberg Ukraine.

The works on the project started in September 2022 and were completed in June 2023.

"The project was implemented in difficult conditions. Nevertheless, we have passed this period. And now we have the most modern automated line for the production of drinks in cans. The line is built on the most modern technologies and meets the highest requirements for both the safety of the personnel serving it and the safety of the product ...More info on site
