Brewery news USA: Anheuser-Busch CEO says company will continue to support LGBTQ community
Anheuser-Busch InBev will continue to support the LGBTQ community despite backlash over a Bud Light advertising campaign featuring a transgender influencer that has simmered for nearly three months, Anheuser-Busch US CEO Brendan Whitworth said on June 28.

Bud Light should be "all about bringing people together," he told "CBS Mornings."

"I think the conversation surrounding Bud Light has moved away from beer, and the conversation has become divisive," Whitworth said. "And Bud Light really doesn’t belong there."

AB InBev, the parent company of Bud Light, drew criticism from conservative activists and consumers for hiring transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney for a promotional March Madness campaign.

Bud Light is among a host of brand names being targeted by conservative activists and lawmakers for their support of Pride-themed events and merchandise, including Disney, the Dodgers and Target.

Many Bud Light customers also responded negatively to comments made by Vice President of Marketing Alissa Heinerscheid on a recent podcast that included calling on the brand to be more “inclusive.”

Whitworth sidestepped a question about whether the Mulvaney campaign was a mistake.

“There’s a big social conversation taking place right now, and big brands are right in the middle of it and it’s not just our industry or Bud ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: City Limits Brewing latest microbrewery to open in Saskatoon
It's always great to see exciting new food and drink ventures launching in Saskatchewan, and City Limits Brewing is the latest micro-brewery to make its debut in the province, Eat North reported on June 26.

Attached to and owned by Stumbletown Distilling, this new craft brewery was in construction since January and officially opened in late May 2023.

It's initial beer lineup features four brews (a light beer, an IPA, a New England IPA, and a raspberry lime sour), with many new seasonal creations on the horizon. All of these beers can be purchased at the brewery, but Saskatoonians can expect to find the cans in select local liquor stores soon too.

Owner Craig Holland has long been known for his incorporation of local makers and artists in his Stumbletown Distilling space, and the official launch party for City Limits Brewing next weekend will be no different.

Happening on Saturday, July 8 from 12 p.m. to late, folks can expect a pop-up makers market, live music, cocktails by Stumbletown (of course!), a Caesar bar, food by Deadly Dogs, Al’s Kitchen, and Pik Up Stix Ice Cream, and more.

"On July 8th we’re pulling out all of the stops and having a party to celebrate ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Friction Beer Co. already open in downtown Shawnee
The much anticipated Friction Beer Co., located in the former Hartman Hardware building in downtown Shawnee, opened its doors to the public on Saturday, June 24, Flatland KC reported.

The new brewery at 11018 Johnson Drive joins an emerging Johnson County beer district. It’s within a block of both Transport Brewery and Servaes Brewing Co.

Initially, Friction will be open four days a week. The brewery will be open 4-10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Saturday hours will be noon until 10 p.m. And it will be open from noon until 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Those days and hours could change once the brewery gets into a good groove. As of right now, the brewery is offering full and half pours of beers and is happy to pour you a small taster so long as you ask.

Friction’s opening line up of beers includes:

Dr. Feelgood, a 4.6% ABV strawberry blond My Aim Is True, a 5.2% ABV milk stout Policy of Truth, a 5.2% ABV coffee milk stout Normal Town, a 6.8% ABV IPA

Friction already has new beers fermenting for release soon. They’re also currently pouring a guest beer from 805 Brewing in addition to their own.

Brewery news USA, NY: Southpaw Brewing getting rave reviews from customers since opening on June 4
Long Island’s newest craft brewery, Southpaw Brewing, opened on June 4 in Yaphank and is getting rave reviews from customers for a grand slam of tasty craft beer, inventive craft cocktails, comfortable ambience and delicious pub food, featuring brick oven pizza, the Long Island Press reported on June 24.

Southpaw Brewing is named after one of its five partners, Thomas Neidhart, who is left-handed and also owns Southpaw Construction in Wading River. With this kind of start, the brewery is on its way to becoming one of Long Island’s best-known southpaws since Carl Yastrzemski (born and raised in the Hamptons).

The new brewery is located in The Shoppes retail section of The Boulevard mixed-use complex on a 322-acre site at the interchange of William Floyd Parkway and the Long Island Expressway. The site formerly housed the Parr Meadows quarter-horse racetrack that operated from 1977 to 1986, which is probably best known for hosting a Woodstock Music Festival 10th anniversary concert with a crowd of 18,000 seeing many of the original performers.

Southpaw is a family affair, with Neidhart’s cousin James Economou serving as a partner and general manager, his sons T.J. and Michael who work at Southpaw Construction as partners, and their close ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: No Wake Brewery LLC coming to Ferrysburg by November
A new waterfront microbrewery and tasting room on Spring Lake plans to offer a range of beverage and sandwich options to customers, including boaters, the Grand Rapids Business Journal reported on June 23.

Owner Jack Thornsen hopes his concept for No Wake Brewery LLC brings “something really good” to the community of Ferrysburg.

Drawing on his experience at Grand Haven-based Odd Side Ales where he learned the craft of brewing, Thronsen is planning a small lakeside brewery and tasting room at Keenan Marina, located at 522 Pine St. in Ferrysburg, where he intends to serve locals and boaters on Spring Lake.

Thornsen joined the Odd Side team in 2016 and “fell in love” with craft brewing, working in positions ranging from production to bartending. When he went to college, he carried that passion for beer with him.

“I wrote my thesis about beer because I didn’t know what the heck to write,” he said.

After graduating college in 2020, he moved home and he and his father transformed their garage into a brewing space for him to start experimenting with his own brews.

Now, three years later, he’s signed a three-year lease and has started renovations on the former site of hair salon ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Thailand braces for liquor industry disruptions
It took only a word from Thailand's prime minister hopeful to trigger a run on local liquor brands Sangvein Spirits and Issan Rum, Nikkei Asia reported on June 28.

Appearing on a morning TV show in early June, Pita Limjaroenrat named his favorite spirits and reminded audiences of his Move Forward Party's policy to promote Thai liquors abroad.

But as supporters - who carried the party to a surprise win in the May 14 general election - rushed to order bottles, they were confronted by the supply issue at the heart of Move Forward's policy. Small distilleries are limited to five-horsepower stills, which means they can make only 100 bottles per day.

"We're actually almost sold out this year. It's going to be rough for us to try to keep up with demand," said Niks Anumanrajadhon, a partner in Issan Rum.

Niks is a fixture on the local bar scene as the founder of famed Bangkok watering holes Teens of Thailand and Asia Today. But when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down bars and restaurants, he fell afoul of Thailand's Alcoholic Beverage Control Act (ABCA).

The law sets strict rules on liquor advertising, and Niks was fined 50,000 baht ($1,418) for trying to sell his bars' ...More info on site

Barley news UK: New winter barley variety Caravelle impresses on disease resistance and yields
Essex grower Andrew Fairley says his crop of the new winter barley Caravelle is the healthiest looking of the five varieties he growing this season, and it is set the replace his old favourite, Cassia, on his arable farm.

The new two-row feed variety entered the AHDB Recommended List late last year with a yield 2% above its nearest competitor, and matching the best of the six-row hybrids with a specific weight nearly equalling top-performer Cassia.

Andrew is impressed by its stiff straw, the multitude of ears the variety throws up and the absence of any disease even after a wet spring, and hopes it will make the top end of his medium-term yield range at 10t/ha.

“Out of all the varieties I am growing, it looks the healthiest, and there is no sign of it going down. In fact, if it goes down, it will surprise me,” he tells Farmers Weekly.

The variety is the healthiest he is growing, followed by Flynn and ahead of Bolton, Tardis and Cassia, and on straw height it is the shortest strawed along with Cassia, which Andrew sees as a big advantage on his farm, where yields average 9.25-10.0t/ha.

“It’s short strawed so there is less to process ...More info on site
