Brewery news USA, CT: Taxes on beer going down in Connecticut
Taxes on beer are going down in Connecticut on July 1. It comes just in time for anyone planning on buying beer for Fourth of July cookouts and celebrations, NBC Connecticut reported.

Gov. Ned Lamont said he has signed a law reducing the excise tax on beer by 16.7% as of Saturday, July 1.

This is what the reduction in the Connecticut beer tax will mean for consumers:

• Barrel, 31 gallons, going down from $7.20 to $6 • ½ Barrel, going down from $3.60 to $3 • ¼ Barrel, going down from $1.80 to $1.50 • Wine gallon, going down from 24 cents to 20 cents

“Connecticut’s craft brewery industry has been booming in recent years, and it is evidenced by the growth of hundreds of new local jobs,” Lamont said in a statement. “This tax cut is another way that we can support our locally-owned, small businesses.”

The governor’s office, citing National Beer Wholesalers Association reports, said the beer industry yields $3.8 billion in economic output in the state and supports 21,228 jobs.

Brewery news USA, KS: Norsemen Brewing Co. opening a second brewery in Topeka
A local brewery is expanding its services one craft beer at a time, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported on July 2.

Norsemen Brewing Co. will soon open its second brewery, dubbed Norsemen Lakeheim Taproom & Restaurant, at 2841 S.E. Croco Road. The location was the former home of Senor Bur-Rito's Taco Shop.

Co-owner of Norsemen Brewing Co., Jared Rudy said the decision to open a second location followed the success of the first Norsemen location at 830 N. Kansas Ave. in the NOTO Arts and Entertainment District — and the need for dine-in service in southeast Topeka.

"Everybody has focused on the west side for so many years, and that's why we started our initial place," Rudy said. "We just wanted to give the east side some love. Being able to open a second location here, on the east side, by the lake, makes me super thrilled."

The new location is expected to open by the end of July.

The Lakeheim location will keep the same Viking theme as the first, but with a more modern approach, Rudy said.

With an occupancy of 152 people and a small square footage compared to the NOTO location, the new brewery features modern chandeliers and a custom-made wooden bar table ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Magosh Brewing opens own brewing facility in Kingsburg
After years of construction, preparation, anticipation and excitement, a new brewery in Kingsburg opened its doors last month, ushering in new life to the already growing downtown of the Swedish village, The Business Journal reported on July 3.

Since 2019, Magosh Brewing has brewed locally and distributed their products through a variety of channels, even offering door-to-door delivery service during the pandemic. Now, Magosh Brewing, located at 1463 Draper St. in Kingsburg, has a place to call home.

Magosh co-founder Josh Bakker said the process has been long and arduous, turning a building constructed in 1912 into a community brewhouse.

“When we started there was just enough power to run a basic office,” he said. “Of course, a brewery takes a lot more.”

The building, which belongs to Bakker’s wife’s family, is also home to Morgan’s Flooring and Svensk Butik Gift Shop. Magosh Brewing is located in the back of the building — a part of the building that has operated as a pharmacy, feed store, auto dealership, mechanic shop and storage.

The building had to undergo installation of water, sewer systems, added insulation and structural improvements, as well as the addition of restrooms and brewing equipment.

Magosh Brewing also spent four years working with PG&E ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Durty Bull Brewing Company hoping to be up and running in Gastonia in the next six to twelve months
Roughly three years ago, Zach Boshamer, co-owner of Gastonia-based investing company North of Fifth, teamed up with long-time friend and Gastonia native Jordan Doctor to bring a new brewery to the city’s FUSE District, the Gaston Gazette reported on July 3.

Doctor finished brewery school in 2020 and quickly joined the team as a co-owner and manager at Durty Bull’s original location in Durham.

Boshamer had seen the potential in the old Coca-Cola garage on South Trenton Street in Gastonia and reached out to Doctor about a possible partnership.

“It would have been more economical to tear it down,” Boshamer said.

However, “It’s kind of an architectural gem in and of itself,” he added.

According to Doctor, “Everyone saw the potential, and it was like, ‘this is going to be something special.'”

Special, but not without its challenges. According to Boshamer, the structure was in pretty bad shape when they first got it.

Designing for the building did not start until they had already made the purchase.

Despite the shape of the building, the project was estimated to be complete by spring 2023. However, COVID was a setback, and the team is now hoping to have the brewery up and running in the next ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Nuckolls Brewing Co. to open its doors in Santa Fe on July 19
The fun continues at the Railyard with the long-awaited opening of Nuckolls Brewing Co., the Santa Fe New Mexican reported on July 3.

Nuckolls is within feet of three other Bill Banowsky venues for fun: Sky Coffee, the Sky Railway and Violet Crown Cinema.

“This is going to be super fun,” Banowsky said about Nuckolls, which he promises will be pet- and child-friendly. “I looked at the Railyard in 2013 and thought, ‘How can I make this a better place for the community, a fun place for the community?’ ”

What’s fun for a Banowsky brew pub?

How about the Jambo Bobcat Bite food truck and Tender Fire pizza on the vast outdoor lower level?

Or the Impact flying saucer and crescent-shaped 6061 UFO by artist Bob Davis, also on street level?

“Bob is a friend,” Banowsky said. “I love his art. He’s generous enough to let us display them here.”

Upstairs are the main bar and the 3,000-square-foot, pet-friendly outdoor patio made of fire-reclaimed wood. Downstairs is the Prohibition-era inspired speakeasy, “The Low End,” with the copper top bar from La Fonda on the Plaza.

Downstairs also is home to the unisex restroom, with Banowsky’s wife, Susan, dreaming up the “sit” and “stand” nomenclature for the cabinet ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Ignite Brewing Co. celebrates opening in Brunswick
City officials and members of the public celebrated Ignite Brewing Co. opening its Brunswick location, which is the only craft brewery in the city, on Friday, June 30, the Medina Gazette reported.

Couples Megan and Jason Slater and Stacy and Michael Chisnell opened Ignite’s first location in Barberton around five years ago. Megan Slater said the four friends wanted to open a brewery together because they have seen breweries make a difference in small towns before.

“The socio-economic impact to the community was what we wanted …” Michael Chisnell said. “We opened the brewery as a way to give back to our community and create the space that we wanted to experience, which our families could experience.”

Ignite’s Brunswick location is at “The Courthouse” at 1255 N. Carpenter Road. The taproom is 4,500 square feet, and there is an 8,000-square-foot patio, which will feature cornhole, live music, trivia and more. Brewing can be done on-site in Brunswick, and around 16 Ignite beers are sold on-tap.

“There’s just not many places where you can go and just hang out for a couple hours …” Stacy Chisnell said. “The nice thing about a brewery, and especially a big patio like this, is you can come for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC & LA: Glass bottling plants forced to cut production due to plummeting Bud Light sales
Bud Light's sales have plummeted so much that a glass bottling company was forced to shut down two of its plants and lay off nearly 650 employees, the Daily Mail reported on July 2.

The Ardagh Group, one of the largest glass producers in the world, announced last week it was shuttering its Wilson, North Carolina, and Simsboro, Louisiana, plants on July 17. The Wilson plant employed nearly 400 people, and the Simsboro plant had 245 — all of whom now find themselves without jobs.

The company did not cite a reason for the closures in its statement, just saying it was part of a 'multi-year performance optimization program.'

But an investigation by WRAL found Ardagh was forced to close the plants due to declining sales of Bud Light — one of its major contractors.

The one-time beer giant has lost its reputation as America's top-selling beer amid a boycott from both leftists and conservatives over its partnership with controversial transgender TikToker Dylan Mulvaney in April.

Mulvaney, 26, recently slammed the company for not supporting her amid the backlash to her March Madness ad, prompting the beer company to double down on its support for the LGBTQIA community.

Workers at both the North Carolina and Louisiana ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Grains of Wrath Brewing closing their Portland brewery and taproom
Grains of Wrath Brewing is closing their Portland brewery and taproom on July 9th, 2023. But it’s less about retraction and more about expansion as the Camas, Washington based brewery is refocusing their efforts on wholesale distribution. The news about GOW PDX’s closure follows a recent report on the brewery’s upcoming production facility and tasting room slated to open later this year in Washougal, Washington, the New School Beer reported on June 30.

Grains of Wrath opened in downtown Camas in 2018 and quickly became one of the hottest breweries of SW Washington and the Portland area. In October 2020 GOW moved into the former Lompoc Brewing Sidebar space in Portland, and refreshed the old Lompoc brewhouse installing a brand new 15bbl brewhouse from Portland Kettle Works with four 30bbl tanks. The Portland brewery has arguably become GOW’s most acclaimed, putting out so many award-winning beers from Oregon alone that they were named Medium Size Brewery of the Year at the 2023 Oregon Beer Awards.

“It has been a whirlwind 3 years. From signing a lease mere weeks prior to COVID shutdowns and trying to build out and open the taproom during that time,” says Grains of Wrath co-owner and operating manager ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Sideswipe Brewing to shut down after nearly a decade in business
After nearly a decade on the Columbus craft beer scene, Sideswipe Brewing will close its doors at the end of July, the Columbus Underground reported on June 30.

Owner and Brewer Craig O’Herron opened the brewery at 2419 Scioto Harper Dr. just southwest of Grandview in late 2013.

“Thank you Columbus for being a great city filled with craft beer enthusiasts and a strong collaborative brewing community, without your support my dreams of owning a craft brewery would never have become a reality,” O’Herron shared in a press release.

O’Herron says that while business was doing well, after 10 years he felt like it was time for a change.

“I’m looking forward to taking some time off and exploring my options from there,” he says.

Initially launching with a limited lineup, Sideswipe’s repertoire grew over the years to offer a number of beers, including a wide variety of IPAs, lagers, wheat beers, stouts and more. Their beer lineup wasn’t the only thing to grow. In 2019 the brewery expanded its taproom footprint in partnership with Arcade Super Awesome.

Arcade Super Awesome has not yet responded to a request for comment on its future at the time of publishing.

As for the future of the brewery’s space, that’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Production of alcohol-free more than doubles since 2007
Declining alcohol consumption in Germany has been evident for some time in one of Germany's most well-known cultural assets: beer, The Local Germany reported on July 4.

According to the German Brewers' Association, the production of alcohol-free beer varieties in Germany has more than doubled since 2007 to over 670 million litres in 2022.

"We expect that soon every tenth beer brewed in Germany will be alcohol-free," says Holger Eichele, Managing Director of the German Brewers' Association.

Eichele said that the brewing industry has noticed how the image of alcohol-free beers has been changing over the last few years.

"The times when alcohol-free beers were mainly consumed by drivers 20 or 30 years ago are long gone." Today, non-alcoholic beer is no longer perceived as a substitute and consumers often appreciate the "low calorie count" compared to alcoholic beer, he said.

According to the German Brewers' Association, alcohol-free beers have "a long history" in Germany. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was a pioneer, where brewmaster Ulrich Wappler developed an alcohol-free beer at the "Engelhardt" brewery in Stralau, a district in Berlin's Friedrichshain neighbourhood.

The beer was first introduced to the public in 1972 at the Leipzig Trade Fair under the name 'AuBi' - Autofahrerbier (Driver's ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine’s 2022-23 barley exports down 52.9%
Despite the occupation of much of its agricultural lands, ongoing Russian naval blockade, and EU restriction on exports, Ukraine has managed to export 48.99 million tons of grain and legumes between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023, Ukrainian news agency Interfax-Ukraine reported on July 3, citing government data. Notably, this is 641,000 tons more than in 2021/2022.

In this period, Ukraine grain exports had the following breakdown:

·Wheat: 16.84 million tons (-10.6% compared to the previous year);

·Barley: 2.7 million tons (-52.9%);

·Rye: 18 thousand tons (-88.9%);

·Corn: 29.13 million tons (+24.4%).

Furthermore, in the 2022/2023 marketing year, Ukraine shipped 153.6 thousand tons of flour, which is 2.2 times more than the previous year when the exports stood at 70.7 thousand tons.

Previously, it was reported that the European Commission extended the ban on Ukrainian grain imports to five EU countries until at least Sept. 15.

Brewery news Ireland: Diageo invests €25 million into Guinness brewery to ramp up non-alcoholic production
With an unrivalled perch looking out over the heart of Dublin city, a line of six shiny new tanks are standing to attention, towering twenty five metres high over the St James’s Gate Guinness Brewery, The Irish Times reported on July 3.

The more than 260-year-old Guinness brand is owned by global drinks giant Diageo, which has just invested €25 million in the tanks, as well as a new two-storey building, to meet rapidly growing demand for its non-alcoholic offering, Guinness 0.0.

Made in Burgstadt in Germany, shipped into Dublin Port and Garda escorted to the brewery, and with a total capacity of almost 90 million pints, Guinness said the new tanks will ramp up production of the alcohol free stout by 300 per cent.

While the exact process of making Guinness 0.0 is a closely guarded secret developed over four years, it involves a cold filtration system that extracts alcohol from the freshly brewed Guinness that has already made its way through the colossal labyrinth of silver tanks, kettles, and pipes at St James’s Gate.

The new Guinness 0.0 production facility has a total capacity of 500,000 hectolitres, and is a big expansion of production capacity since the non-alcoholic stout launched in the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Japanese beers outpace other imports in South Korea
Despite a nationwide downturn in beer imports, Japanese brews are doubling their market share in South Korea. Fueled by the success of initiatives like the Sapporo Premium Beer First Bar, a thriving pop-up store in Seoul's Hongdae district, Japanese beers are demonstrating robust growth against the odds, putting pressure on Chinese and Dutch competitors, the EconoTimes reported on July 3.

According to the Korea Customs Service, total beer imports in South Korea declined by 12.5 percent last year, reaching 254 billion won (US$193 million). However, imports of Japanese beer more than doubled during the same period, totaling around 18.8 billion won. From January to May of this year, imports of Japanese beer already achieved 80 percent of last year's level, reaching 14.8 billion won.

Leading brewery Asahi has been expanding its supply chain and introduced the limited-quantity Asahi Superdry Draft Beer Can in May, known for its fully opening top. Because of its enormous appeal, the new product will begin to compete with draft and bottled beer in the entertainment industry in July.

Due to a widespread boycott of Japanese goods and services as a result of a trade dispute, Japanese beer fell to third position in terms of market share in 2019. ...More info on site
