Japan: Brewers racing to launch new products ahead of tax cut
|
Major Japanese brewers are racing to launch new products, expecting that a tax cut in October and the waning impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will help reverse a downturn in the domestic market, Jiji Press reported on July 6.
"This year is an important year for the beer market that comes once in a few years," a beer maker official said.
Beer tax will be lowered by 6.65 yen per 350 millilitres in October. Major makers are already launching new products that are more expensive than their mainstay products, which are priced at around 231 yen per 350-milliliter can.
Asahi Breweries Ltd., which is believed to be the top Japanese brewer in volume last year, is scheduled to launch Asahi Shokusai on July 11 in a special can that produces foam when opened.
The company plans to sell the new product around 284 yen per 340-milliliter can, a price that could be regarded as steep. Still, an Asahi official said confidently, "The trend of treating oneself to a bit of luxury will continue."

USA: Bud Light sales showing no signs of rebounding
|
Bud Light is showing no signs of rebounding from its slump as sales plunged even further in June, CBS News reported on July 5 citing industry data.
Sales of the popular beer dropped 28% for the week ending June 24 when compared to the same period last year, according to beer tracker Bump Williams Consulting. Sales of Yuengling Lager, Coors Light and Miller Lite all rose by 22%, 19% and 16% respectively during that same week.
That adds up to around $26.3 million less for Bud Light compared to a year ago, according to data from consumer behavior data analytics firm Circana, which measured one-week sales for Bud Light ending June 25. Coors Light and Mexican pilsner Modelo Especial each saw their sales grow by roughly $10.4 million during that same weekspan, Circana said.
The prolonged sales dip for Bud Light comes weeks after a promotion fiasco with TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney, a trans rights activist and actress, that sparked an uproar among conservatives, including singers Kid Rock and Travis Tritt, who called for a boycott of the popular beer.
Subsequent boycotts of Bud Light have also been initiated by members of the LGBTQ+ community, who feel let down by the

South Korea: Carlsberg’s former South Korea partner files complaint against Danish brewer
|
GoldenBlue, a South Korean whiskey maker and distributor of imported liquor, said on July 7 it had filed a complaint against its former partner Carlsberg Group for unilaterally ending their distribution contract, The Korea Herald reported.
In its complaint filed with the Korean Fair Trade Commission on July 5, GoldenBlue also argued that Carlsberg Group engaged in unfair trade practices during their contract period.
In March, Carlsberg Group "unilaterally" terminated their contract for the distribution of Carlsberg beer in Korea. The two companies had been in partnership since they signed the deal in May 2018.
The Korean distributor insisted that the Danish brewer abused its superior bargaining position to demand GoldenBlue achieve a high sales target, leading the company to increase marketing expenses.
GoldenBlue said its marketing expenses between 2018 and 2021 accounted for around 50 percent of net sales of Carlsberg beer products. It added that the company made a significant investment to add some 50 new employees and set up a unit dedicated to increase sales of Carlsberg.
“Losses continued due to increased expenses (in marketing and investment) as Carlsberg Group pushed with excessively high sales goals. But, the company endured the losses in hopes that the company would be able to generate
