USA: Modelo Especial holds position of America’s top-selling beer brand for two straight months
|
Modelo Especial, from Constellation Brands, has been America’s top-selling beer brand for two straight months — May and June, according to data from consulting firm Bump Williams cited by Reuters.
The data showed Modelo Especial had an 8.7% share of overall beer sales at retail stores during the last four weeks ending July 1. This comes after the beer dethroned Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Light in May, which had been the most sold beer in 2022 and the early part of 2023.
Bud Light’s sales dipped following a public backlash from conservative groups due to a social media promotion involving Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer. The drop in sales had Bud Light trailing Modelo Especial with a 7% share of the overall beer sales. Bud Light and Budweiser sales experienced a substantial decline of 28% and 11.7% respectively year on year, while Modelo Especial’s sales increased by 8.5%.
The drop in sales due to conservative backlash was not exclusive to Bud Light. Other beer brands from AB InBev, such as Michelob Ultra and Natural Light, also experienced a decrease in sales. Guinness, Corona and Heineken were named the three “most-liked” beers of 2023, while Bud Light lost its footing, slipping from the top ten, The Drinks Business reported on July 10.
YouGov survey results saw Guinness, Corona and Heineken win approval from 58%, 53% and 51% of Americans respectively, but reports in Newsweek noted how Bud Light had dropped off the top ten list entirely with the data showing it placing at number 15.
The survey, which was judged by public approval between the second quarters of 2022 and 2023, revealed that despite the proportion of Americans who “liked” Bud Light staying consistent at 42%, the popularity of rival beers had meanwhile surged, pushing it from ninth-most popular brand in 2022 into a tie position as 14th-most popular in 2023 on a par with other beer brands such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller Genuine Draft and Miller Light.
According to Newsweek, Bud Light has reportedly also lost its position due to being targeted with a boycott campaign following its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Belgium: AB InBev investing in upgrade of its Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Hoegaarden and Leuven breweries to expand non-alcoholic beer portfolio

Global beer giant AB InBev is investing €31m ($34m) in upgrading its Belgian breweries in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Hoegaarden and Leuven: which will help expand its non-alcoholic beer portfolio, BeverageDaily.com reported on July 11.
The investment will include optimization of a new de-alcoholizing system used to make Corona Cero, an alcohol-free version of Mexican lager Corona which launched in 10 European markets last year (Belgium, Finland, France, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the UK).
Belgium is one of AB InBev’s top producers for 0.0% ABV beer brands. Alongside Corona Cero, AB InBev brews another six non-alcoholic beers in the country: including options from Hoegaarden and Leffe.
The country also boasts AB InBev’s Global Innovation and Technology Center in Leuven, where many of the non-alcohol brewing techniques used by the company were developed.
The latest investment will also go towards improved bottling capabilities.
“The no-alcohol beers of today are much different from what was available years ago,” said David De Schutter, Global Vice President, GITEC. “The innovative methods and technology developed by our brewers and researchers are creating the next generation of refreshing, great tasting, no-alcohol beers for people to enjoy on any occasion.”

Thailand: Energy drinks billionaire targets large-scale beer brewing as next venture

Thai business magnate Sathien Sathientham, who made his £1.2 billion fortune through energy drink brand Carabao Dang, has targeted large-scale beer brewing as his next venture, The Drinks Business reported on July 7.
Sathientham, who recently changed his surname from Setthasit, has invested 4 billion baht (£90 million) to build a factory in the centre of Thailand.
Investment is being made through Tawandang Brewery, a business established by the billionaire last year, and the first batch of beer is expected by the end of the year.
Distribution will be provided by Bangkok-listed company Carabao Group, the energy drink maker named after a popular rock band which Sathientham co-founded in 2002, as reported by Forbes.
The business magnate is listed as number 26 on the Forbes list of Thailand’s 50 Richest. His £1.2 billion fortune stems largely from the energy drinks company, the other co-founders of which are singer Yuenyong Opakul, who goes by the stage name of Aed Carabao, and business partner Nutchamai Thanombooncharoen, who ranks on the Forbes list at number 38.
The energy drinks billionaire plans to harness 3% of Thailand’s domestic beer market in the first year of operations, the total of which is estimated at 257 billion baht (£5.7 billion).

Zimbabwe: Delta Beverages delta invests over USD150 mln into expansion in five years
|
Delta Beverages has sunk US$70 million into the expansion of three manufacturing plants at its Harare factories, bringing its investment to over US$150 million in five years, the New Zimbabwe reported on July 11.
The country’s biggest beverage producer presented its refurbished Coca-Cola, Traditional Beer, and Lager packaging lines recently, a move company Managing Director Matlhongonolo Valela said would positively impact the Zimbabwean economy.
Valela said a significant amount had also been invested in Delta Beverages’ (African Distillers) AFDIS subsidiary.
“These projects will have significant multiplier effects on the economy meaning if consumer spending responds there is an opportunity for all our value chain partners to increase their output by 30% to supply lager beer, 33% to supply soft drinks and 33% to supply sorghum beer, thus driving our economy to growth,” said Valela.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was Guest-of-Honour at the tour of its facilities commended Delta Beverages for its move to support local farmers.
He urged it to extend the same support to other sectors of Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector.

UK: Carlsberg making its beer weaker ahead of duty increase
|
Carlsberg is making its beer weaker to save money as the UK Government prepares to raise taxes on alcohol by more than 10pc, The Telegraph reported on July 11.
The Copenhagen-headquartered brewer is reducing the strength of its Danish Pilsner from 3.8pc alcohol by volume (abv) to 3.4pc abv.
It makes Carlsberg the latest beer brand to weaken its brews to save money in an example of so-called ‘Drinkflation’ – when companies cut the alcohol content of their products but prices rise or stay the same.
Beer is taxed on its strength, so cutting the alcohol content can be an easy way for brands to save money.
It comes as drinks producers brace for an expected 10.1pc rise in the levies on alcohol from August.
Slashing the strength of its beer below 3.5pc will allow Carlsberg to take advantage of a new, lower tax rate for weaker drinks when alcohol duty rates change in August.
Currently, all beers above 2.8pc in strength pay a ‘general’ rate. However under the new system beers 3.4pc or less in strength will have to pay £9.27 per litre of alcohol in the product, compared to £21.01 for beers between 3.5pc and 8.5pc.
