Brewery news USA: Modelo Especial holds position of America’s top-selling beer brand for two straight months
Modelo Especial, from Constellation Brands, has been America’s top-selling beer brand for two straight months — May and June, according to data from consulting firm Bump Williams cited by Reuters.

The data showed Modelo Especial had an 8.7% share of overall beer sales at retail stores during the last four weeks ending July 1. This comes after the beer dethroned Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Light in May, which had been the most sold beer in 2022 and the early part of 2023.

Bud Light’s sales dipped following a public backlash from conservative groups due to a social media promotion involving Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer. The drop in sales had Bud Light trailing Modelo Especial with a 7% share of the overall beer sales. Bud Light and Budweiser sales experienced a substantial decline of 28% and 11.7% respectively year on year, while Modelo Especial’s sales increased by 8.5%.

The drop in sales due to conservative backlash was not exclusive to Bud Light. Other beer brands from AB InBev, such as Michelob Ultra and Natural Light, also experienced a decrease in sales. This fallout was noted by TD Cowen analyst Vivien Azer, who expressed the belief that the consumers shifting away from these brands were ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Guinness, Corona and Heineken named the three “most-liked” beers of 2023
Guinness, Corona and Heineken were named the three “most-liked” beers of 2023, while Bud Light lost its footing, slipping from the top ten, The Drinks Business reported on July 10.

YouGov survey results saw Guinness, Corona and Heineken win approval from 58%, 53% and 51% of Americans respectively, but reports in Newsweek noted how Bud Light had dropped off the top ten list entirely with the data showing it placing at number 15.

The survey, which was judged by public approval between the second quarters of 2022 and 2023, revealed that despite the proportion of Americans who “liked” Bud Light staying consistent at 42%, the popularity of rival beers had meanwhile surged, pushing it from ninth-most popular brand in 2022 into a tie position as 14th-most popular in 2023 on a par with other beer brands such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller Genuine Draft and Miller Light.

According to Newsweek, Bud Light has reportedly also lost its position due to being targeted with a boycott campaign following its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The paper stated that this could be deduced since Bud Light sales fell around the same time, with the company selling 31.3% less in the week ending 24 June ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Personal Best Brewery opening up in Ithaca
A new microbrewery and beer garden is opening up on West State Street in Ithaca featuring classic brews and new creations, The Ithaca Voice reported on July 7.

Inside the renovated building that formerly held the City Health Club gym, the brewery features an outdoor beer garden, over a dozen selections on tap ranging from classics to new creations, as well as several recreational shuffleboard courts.

Personal Best Brewery is now in its soft-opening phase and is open four days a week from 4-10 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 4-11 p.m. on Fridays; 12-11 p.m. on Saturdays; and 12-8 p.m. on Sundays. Hours are subject to change and will be adjusted once the grand opening is held.

Founder and owner Anthony Cesari said the idea of opening a brewery came to him a few years ago.

“This building has been in our family, it was originally a health club since the ‘80s and the health club was slowly [fading] away,” Cesari said. “Around that time I had just gotten into home brewing and we started toying with the idea of maybe doing a brewery — and then the health club closed and we started [demolishing] it in 2019 and it really became ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Staggered Leg Brewing to open its doors officially on July 21
Congratulations to the team at Staggered Leg Brewing as they officially open their doors on Friday, July 21st at 4790 W Market Street in York, PA. Not only will the opening of the brewery add to the record number of brewing companies operating in PA, but it will also add to the vast number of Veteran owned and operated breweries in Pennsylvania, Breweries in PA reported on July 10.

According to military veteran and brewery owner Dennis Dacheux Jr. who (with his father Dennis Dacheux Sr. and brother William Dacheux) will be leading business operations and ownership, the Dacheux family has spent years perfecting the many different aspects of the business prior to opening the brewery. As Dennis shared, his brother William will lead brewing operations. Having brewed professionally in the past as well as spending time homebrewing, William will bring his expertise to the brewing side of the business.

Staggered Leg plans to offer seven beers immediately once opening, with the opportunity to add more to its twelve tap system. Brewery news USA, CT: Tree House Brewing Co. opens brewery on 100-acre Woodstock farm
The highly coveted “White Whale” of craft beer is now selling its products in Connecticut, the Hartford Business Journal reported on July 10.

Tree House Brewing Co., which opened a fermentory on a 100-acre Woodstock farm in 2019, has begun offering retail sales at its Connecticut facility.

Located at 54 Joy Road, Tree House Farm & Fermentory offers a draft list that includes two pales, one with Peacharine, Citra and Riwaka hops, and another with Simcoe and Citra, according to an announcement on Twitter.

In addition to the new brewery, the farm features “a large fruit tree orchard, berry block, produce program, hop fields and chicken flock,” the announcement says.

Tree House, founded in 2011, opened its first brewery in a tiny red barn in Brimfield, Massachusetts. It moved to a Koran Farm in Monson, Massachusetts in 2013 following a zoning dispute.

Tree House quickly became a destination for craft beer-seekers from across the country and outgrew its location. Customers would wait in line for hours to fill growlers of newly released seasonal and experimental brews, mostly IPAs.

In 2014, Tree House built a new brewery and taproom that was six times larger across the street. As the brewery increased in size, so did its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: O’Connor Brewing Co. closing Norfolk location, selling building to another brewer
O’Connor Brewing Co. is closing its Norfolk taproom and brewing facility, the owners announced on social media on July 7. The brewery’s last day of operation is July 23, Yahoo News reported.

“Although we are sad to say goodbye to our current neighborhood and employees, we are proud and grateful to be a part of the local business community since 2010 and look forward to this upcoming new chapter and the evolution of our business,” owners Kevin and Penny O’Connor said in a statement on social media.

Armed Forces Brewing Co., a military-themed, veteran-owned brewer from Annapolis, Maryland, will move into the brewing facility, bringing 47 jobs, according to an announcement from Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

O’Connor opened in 2010 and moved to its current location at 211 W. 24th St. in 2014. The beers were a hit: The company then began producing thousands of barrels a year.

Then, former employees called out the beer maker and its leadership for fostering an environment of racism, sexism and harassment in 2021. O’Connor management also implemented changes from a voluntary workplace culture investigation.

In the June 7th announcement, O’Connor owners said the beer brand will still be manufactured and sold at restaurants and stores.

Brewery news USA, WI: One Barrel Brewing Co. to close on of its locations in Madison
An East Side brewpub will close later this month in an effort to grow, the Wisconsin State Journal reported on July 7.

One Barrel Brewing Co. announced on July 7 that it will close its Atwood Avenue location so it can focus on finding a new spot for a “larger destination” taproom and beer garden in the Madison area.

Founder Peter Gentry said in 2019, when he opened a $1.5 million facility in the Door County community of Egg Harbor, that he was in the hunt for a site on which to build, or a building to buy, on Madison’s West Side and which would serve as a brewpub and larger-scale brewing facility.

The move would allow the company to reclassify the business as a brewpub, not a brewery, which means he would be able to open three additional locations under state law. Because One Barrel brews most of the beer on contract at Octopi in Waunakee, its operation is classified as a brewery and is only allowed two locations.

Besides Madison, the company wants to expand into Green Bay as well, according to Adam Ginsberg, who sent a letter on July 7 to the brewery’s mug members informing them that the last day ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev investing in upgrade of its Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Hoegaarden and Leuven breweries to expand non-alcoholic beer portfolio
Global beer giant AB InBev is investing €31m ($34m) in upgrading its Belgian breweries in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Hoegaarden and Leuven: which will help expand its non-alcoholic beer portfolio, BeverageDaily.com reported on July 11.

The investment will include optimization of a new de-alcoholizing system used to make Corona Cero, an alcohol-free version of Mexican lager Corona which launched in 10 European markets last year (Belgium, Finland, France, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the UK).

Belgium is one of AB InBev’s top producers for 0.0% ABV beer brands. Alongside Corona Cero, AB InBev brews another six non-alcoholic beers in the country: including options from Hoegaarden and Leffe.

The country also boasts AB InBev’s Global Innovation and Technology Center in Leuven, where many of the non-alcohol brewing techniques used by the company were developed.

The latest investment will also go towards improved bottling capabilities.

“The no-alcohol beers of today are much different from what was available years ago,” said David De Schutter, Global Vice President, GITEC. “The innovative methods and technology developed by our brewers and researchers are creating the next generation of refreshing, great tasting, no-alcohol beers for people to enjoy on any occasion.”

Brewery news Thailand: Energy drinks billionaire targets large-scale beer brewing as next venture
Thai business magnate Sathien Sathientham, who made his £1.2 billion fortune through energy drink brand Carabao Dang, has targeted large-scale beer brewing as his next venture, The Drinks Business reported on July 7.

Sathientham, who recently changed his surname from Setthasit, has invested 4 billion baht (£90 million) to build a factory in the centre of Thailand.

Investment is being made through Tawandang Brewery, a business established by the billionaire last year, and the first batch of beer is expected by the end of the year.

Distribution will be provided by Bangkok-listed company Carabao Group, the energy drink maker named after a popular rock band which Sathientham co-founded in 2002, as reported by Forbes.

The business magnate is listed as number 26 on the Forbes list of Thailand’s 50 Richest. His £1.2 billion fortune stems largely from the energy drinks company, the other co-founders of which are singer Yuenyong Opakul, who goes by the stage name of Aed Carabao, and business partner Nutchamai Thanombooncharoen, who ranks on the Forbes list at number 38.

The energy drinks billionaire plans to harness 3% of Thailand’s domestic beer market in the first year of operations, the total of which is estimated at 257 billion baht (£5.7 billion).

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Beverages delta invests over USD150 mln into expansion in five years
Delta Beverages has sunk US$70 million into the expansion of three manufacturing plants at its Harare factories, bringing its investment to over US$150 million in five years, the New Zimbabwe reported on July 11.

The country’s biggest beverage producer presented its refurbished Coca-Cola, Traditional Beer, and Lager packaging lines recently, a move company Managing Director Matlhongonolo Valela said would positively impact the Zimbabwean economy.

Valela said a significant amount had also been invested in Delta Beverages’ (African Distillers) AFDIS subsidiary.

“These projects will have significant multiplier effects on the economy meaning if consumer spending responds there is an opportunity for all our value chain partners to increase their output by 30% to supply lager beer, 33% to supply soft drinks and 33% to supply sorghum beer, thus driving our economy to growth,” said Valela.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was Guest-of-Honour at the tour of its facilities commended Delta Beverages for its move to support local farmers.

He urged it to extend the same support to other sectors of Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector.

“It is pleasing to note that Delta Beverages provides farmers with inputs, extension services, and in deserving cases capital expenditure funding with a focus to improve yields, uniformity of varieties, and good agronomics practices,” said ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg making its beer weaker ahead of duty increase
Carlsberg is making its beer weaker to save money as the UK Government prepares to raise taxes on alcohol by more than 10pc, The Telegraph reported on July 11.

The Copenhagen-headquartered brewer is reducing the strength of its Danish Pilsner from 3.8pc alcohol by volume (abv) to 3.4pc abv.

It makes Carlsberg the latest beer brand to weaken its brews to save money in an example of so-called ‘Drinkflation’ – when companies cut the alcohol content of their products but prices rise or stay the same.

Beer is taxed on its strength, so cutting the alcohol content can be an easy way for brands to save money.

It comes as drinks producers brace for an expected 10.1pc rise in the levies on alcohol from August.

Slashing the strength of its beer below 3.5pc will allow Carlsberg to take advantage of a new, lower tax rate for weaker drinks when alcohol duty rates change in August.

Currently, all beers above 2.8pc in strength pay a ‘general’ rate. However under the new system beers 3.4pc or less in strength will have to pay £9.27 per litre of alcohol in the product, compared to £21.01 for beers between 3.5pc and 8.5pc.

A spokesman for ...More info on site
