India: Bira 91 reveals plans for premium Indian beer
|
Delhi-headquartered brewery Bira 91 has detailed how consumer demands for ‘healthier and more experimental’ products are guiding its innovation strategy, while also revealing its plans for a ‘premium’ Indian beer, the Food Navigator Asia reported on July 12.
It recently received funding of USD$10m Japan’s MUFG bank and USD$70m from brewery giant Kirin, which will be channelled towards expanding its production capacity and distribution networks domestically and globally.
Its founder and CEO, Ankur Jain, said that its partnership with Kirin extends beyond funding to capitalise on Kirin’s industry expertise to both “premiumize Indian beer through innovation” and “drive sustainability in the industry.”
On the sustainability agenda, it has been working with Kirin for the last 18months to localise its manufacturing and innovation, as it aims to become India’s first net zero beer brand by 2025. It recently established the B9-Kirin Centre for Sustainable Growth in New Delhi and a net zero brewery in Mysuru.
Since 2019, the company reported a six-fold increase in its production capacity. It recently acquired a new manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh that will commence operations in 2024.
Additionally, it is headlining partnerships within India’s most popular sport – cricket, launching limited-edition beers and merchandise during Indian Premier League (IPL).

South Korea: HiteJinro’s new beer Kelly sells 100 mln bottles in its first 99 days on the market
|
HiteJinro’s new beer brand Kelly sold 100 million bottles in 99 days since its market debut in April, according to the nation’s top beverage company on July 12.
Some 3.3 million boxes of Kelly, HiteJinro’s sixth beer brand and the first lager beer, were sold as of July 11.
The company said the upbeat sales figure equates to 11.7 beers sold every second or 2.3 beers consumed by one person among the total population that is of legal drinking age.
Kelly also set a record with hitting the 100 million mark over the shortest period among the local beer brands. The previous record was owned by Terra, another HiteJinro beer that debuted in 2019.
Kelly's release has buoyed sales of the company's other beer brands. In June, HiteJinro’s beer sales increased by 33 percent compared to sales records from March this year before Kelly was launched. Sales records in the second quarter of this year also went up by 12 percent.
Consumers’ responses at major supermarkets also contributed to Kelly’s rapid growth in sales. According to two major supermarkets' sales data in June, HiteJinro’s market share of domestic beer sales was about 49.6 percent on average, which is an increase of about 7 percent since

Cyprus: June beer deliveries decline by 16.9%
|
Total beer deliveries in Cyprus experienced a significant decline of 16.9 per cent in June 2023, compared to June 2022, according to data released by the Statistical Service on July 12.
However, the increase in beer exports somewhat mitigated the decrease in overall beer deliveries.
Specifically, beer deliveries from breweries amounted to 4,512,414 litres in June, compared to 5,428,911 litres in the same month last year.
Domestic beer deliveries decreased by 19.4 per cent in June 2023, compared to June 2022. In contrast, beer deliveries for exports saw a significant increase of 30.5 per cent.
In terms of litres, beer deliveries for domestic consumption reached 4,149,416 litres in June, down from 5,150,652 litres in June of the previous year.
On the other hand, beer deliveries for exports increased to 362,998 litres compared to 278,259 litres in June 2022.
On a monthly basis, beer deliveries showed a slight increase of 231,132 litres, marking a drop of 5.4 per cent.
The decrease in beer deliveries for domestic consumption suggests a potential decline in local demand, which could be influenced by various factors such as changes in consumer preferences and economic conditions.
However, the growth in beer exports indicates a positive trend for international demand.
