USA: Modelo Especial’s ascent to top selling US beer reflects nation’s shifting demographics and tastes, experts say

A marketing blunder may have helped upset Bud Light’s standing as the top selling U.S. beer, but a dark horse, or caballo oscuro, has long been on its heels, the Courthouse News Service reported on July 14.
Modelo Especial usurped its domestic rival in sales in May, the capstone on an unlikely ascent for the Mexican lager that reflects the nation’s shifting demographics and tastes, experts say. The cerveza has been sold in the U.S. since the early 1980s, but it was an antitrust case in 2013 that turned the beer into a mainstay at Los Angeles cantinas and Chicago dive bars.
Bud Light’s sales began to fall in March after transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney posted a picture on social media of a personalized can the company sent her as a gift. Outrage among conservatives caused the company to backtrack, which itself sparked a liberal uproar, leading to a double-digit decline in sales.
Modelo crept past its rival amid the controversy. Modelo made up 8.4% of U.S. retail-store beer sales in the four weeks that ended June 3, compared with 7.3% for Bud Light, according to Bump Williams’ analysis of Nielsen data.

USA, MA: Courthouse Brew Co. already open in Worcester
|
Worcester's newest brewery opened this month in a former mill complex off Brussels Street, a dream cofounders Mark Gawlak and Daniel Whalen have been working on since they entered the craft beer world while working at Brew City Grill, one of Worcester's original beer meccas, the Patch reported on July 13.
Courthouse Brew Co. has been open for about two weeks with limited hours to start. It's taken Whalen and Gawlak almost four years to get to this point — in part due to their day jobs as lawyers, and the coronavirus pandemic.
Courthouse Brew Co. is the first standalone brewery to open in Worcester since the pandemic. (Double Down Brewing opened in September 2021 inside Peppercorn's, the same restaurant where WormTown was born.) It will fill a void left by two Worcester brewers that closed during the pandemic: 3Cross Fermentation Coop, and Flying Dreams, which is still open in Marlborough.
The pair met decades ago while working at the former Spag's grocery store in Shrewsbury, and eventually wound up attending Worcester State University together. They later worked as servers and bartenders at Brew City, jobs that allowed them to sample plenty in the exploding world of craft beer.

USA, NY: Hop Head Brewery holds ribbon cutting ceremony in Owego
|
The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce sponsored a ribbon cutting ceremony for Hop Head Brewery on July 14, WENY reported.
The new brewery is a family owned and operated gastropub. They will now offer house brewed ciders and craft beers in addition to their existing food options.
Jenna and Aaron Fairfield are and have been the principal owners of Hop Head Brewery for all five years of operation. The brewery is formerly known as Sugar Maple Cafe. They wanted to ensure that the community along with their patrons were aware of the rebranding and changes moving forward.
"We wanted people to know it's still us here and that we still have the same great food and not just a brewery, it's great food as well." Fairfield said.
The Fairfield's also mentioned that the expansion into alcoholic beverages also allows the establishment to offer dinner services, in addition to their breakfast and lunch options. Hop Head Brewery also offers live music and community events to its patrons on occasion.

|
Simple Motive Brewing Co. is Yonkers’ second brewery, and one with a mission to bring clean, balanced beer to Westchester residents. The brewery features a seven-barrel system, which is where the magic happens. There, the team diligently crafts the beer, which has a smooth taste, and serves pints in the lively taproom, the Westchester Magazine reported on July 14.
“The people of Yonkers were looking for something new, a thing of their own, and we’re very much trying to fill that void,” says co-founder and NYC firefighter, Andy Galagarza.
Prior to its opening on June 3, Simple Motive Brewing sat in the planning phase for six years. Longtime friends Matt Williams and Galagarza toyed with the idea of opening a brewery, until one day, Williams recalls, they formally began planting the seeds.
“We had zero clue what we were doing. It was just me going to conferences,” says Williams. In the beginning, the team scouted out locations in Atlanta, where Williams and his wife, now event manager and COO Ladys Guerrero Williams, lived at the time.

Canada, AB: Alberta Grains unveiled as new name for merged wheat and barley commission
|
The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) and Alberta Barley have come together as one, Lethbridge News Now reported on July 18.
The new name of their merged commission has been announced as Alberta Grains. The new commission will begin operating in place of the Alberta Wheat and Barley commissions on August 1, 2023.
Greg Sears, chair of AWC said, “We are thrilled to join the forces of Alberta Barley and AWC to create Alberta Grains. Our new organization will be focused on delivering value to our farmers and other stakeholders while contributing to the growth and sustainability of the grain industry in Alberta.”
A news release stated that Alberta Grains will “build on the strengths of both organizations to create a unified voice for the province’s 18,000 wheat and barley farmers.”

Australia: Malting barley shipments down 48% in May
|
Australia exported 599,767 tonnes of barley and 452,182t of sorghum in May, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on July 17.
Barley comprised 535,102t of feed and 64,665t of malting.
The feed barley figure is up 14 percent from the 469,640t shipped in April, while the malting figure of 64,665t is down 48pc from the April total of 123,223t.
Sorghum had a huge month, with 452,182t shipped in May, up 25pc from the 361,058t exported in April.
The three largest-volume feed barley markets were Saudi Arabia on 126,325t, Japan on 105,203t, while China on 445,641t accounted for 99pc of sorghum exports.
The major malting markets for May-shipped barley were Vietnam on 34,803t, Peru on 17,941t and Ecuador on 5000t.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said feed barley exports have continued at a consistent pace.
“Overall, the commodity-switchable Asian feed demand for barley is trending weaker as we continue to see Brazilian corn and Black Sea feed wheat compete well on price with Australian barley and low-grade wheat,” Mr Roache said.

Russia: Moscow appoints new management of Baltika Breweries
|
Carlsberg on July 19 said Moscow had appointed a new management of Baltika Breweries after it took control of the Danish brewer's Russian subsidiary last week, and implications were unclear, Reuters reported.
"Carlsberg Group no longer retains control of the management or operations of Baltika Breweries," Carlsberg said in a statement.
"It is unclear to Carlsberg Group what implications this development will have on the ongoing operations of Baltika Breweries in Russia as well as the current sales process," it said.
Carlsberg was not immediately available for further comment.
According to a decree signed by Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, July 16, the Russian state had taken control of Carlsberg's fully owned subsidiary along with Danone's Russian subsidiary.

UK: Heineken to invest £25 million in Manchester as part of decarbonisation project
|
Heineken has announced plans to install a network of heat pumps at its brewery in Manchester as part of its drive to decarbonise UK production sites by 2030, NewsChain reported on July 17.
The UK’s largest pub, beer and cider company said it will invest £25 million in a heat pump network to capture and reuse thermal energy to brew and package beer at the factory in Hulme.
It is part of the firm’s aim to reach net zero emissions across its global operations by 2030, including UK sites in Tadcaster and Hereford.
The investment, which includes a £3.7 million grant from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, will be used to install technology to capture heat from sources including the refrigeration units on site.
The heat will be redistributed and reused to power other brewing stages, such as mashing, pasteurisation and washing returnable kegs.
The heat pump system will replace gas, which has been used to generate the heat needed for certain parts of the brewing process.
Heineken estimates it will result in a 45% reduction in gas use at the site, with work expected to be finished by the end of 2024.

Ireland: Diageo to increase draught beer prices for the second time this year
|
Guinness owner Diageo is to increase the price it charges for draught beer for the second time this year, RTE reported on July 19.
The cost of a pint is to rise by 4 cent from 14 August.
The move will apply across the company's portfolio of draught brands, including Guinness, Carlsberg, Smithwicks, Harp, Rockshore and Hop House 13.
Diageo blamed the decision on rising costs.
"We continue to experience rising input costs across our business operations in Ireland," a spokesperson said.
"We are working to manage and absorb much of this, but to maintain a sustainable business, we have written to our customers in the on-trade to advise them of an increase on draught beer list prices of 4 cent per pint."
The last time it increased prices was 1 February, when it added 12 cent to the cost of a pint.
The cumulative total of 16 cent a pint increase by Diageo compares to a 17 cent hike in prices over the past year by rival Heineken.
The Vintners' Federation of Ireland described the price increase as poorly timed and deeply unfair to both consumers and publicans.

Australia: Diageo Australia appoints new managing director
|
Diageo says Dan Hamilton has been appointed managing director Australia and will start on 1 October. Hamilton joined Diageo in 2011 and has worked in a number of global markets for the company. His most recent role was Korea and Japan MD, the Food & Drink Business reported on July 18.
His appointment follows Diageo Australia’s announcement last month that Angus McPherson would leave the business at the end of September 2023 to pursue an opportunity outside the company.
Hamilton has held senior roles within Diageo’s China, Japan, Europe and Korea markets, most recently as managing director for Korea and Japan.
Diageo Asia Pacific President John O’Keeffe said that as managing director for Korea and Japan, Hamilton had successfully led the acceleration of growth for Diageo’s Korea business and ‘turbocharged’ the premiumisation of the portfolio.
“In 2016, Dan took up the role of general manager Diageo Japan where he drove a step change in execution making it one of the fastest growing Scotch businesses in Diageo and winning significant market share across all categories.” O’Keeffe said.
“We know Dan’s deep knowledge of the business, his relationships within the industry, and his strategic insights will set him up well to continue Diageo Australia’s strong growth trajectory,”
