Brewery news USA, VA: New Realm Brewing Co. breaking ground on new brewery in Suffolk
New Realm Brewing Co. is breaking ground on a new brewery and restaurant located in the new Blue Point at the Riverfront development in Suffolk, Va. The 6,000 sq-ft facility will include a 5-bbl brewhouse, restaurant, covered rooftop patio, bar, and 8,000 square-foot beer garden that will feature a dog friendly outdoor bar and covered patio. The location is anticipated to be open to the public in the Spring of 2024, the Craft Brewing Business reported on July 20.

Blue Point at The Riverfront is an 18-acre mixed use development by the Miller Group, located in the Harbour View section of the city. The property is located near the Nansemond and James Rivers and the name pays homage to Blue Point Oysters which are commonly found in both rivers.

The Suffolk location will feature the company’s handcrafted lineup of award-winning craft beers, and limited specialty releases created and brewed by New Realm’s Brewmaster Mitch Steele. The on-site scratch kitchen will be serving New Realm classics such as the New Realm Burger, the Instagram-famous Mac & Cheese, as well as locally sourced specialties. Brewery news USA, OH: Hearth Brewing granted permission to open in Harrison
A new brewery is coming to Harrison, the Eagle Country Online reported on July 20.

At a meeting last week, the City of Harrison Planning Commission granted a conditional use permit for Hearth Brewing.

Hearth Brewing will be located inside the former Burwinkel Farms location at 1195 Stone Drive.

The ownership team consists of father and son, Greg and Cory Otis, as well as friend Andy Plogsted.

Plans for the brewery include seating for around 200 people with both indoor and outdoor options, as well as a large bar with a view of the brewhouse.

Aside from serving craft beer, Hearth Brewing plans to also serve pizza.

They hope to be open by Memorial Day 2024.

Brewery news USA, FL: Fat Point Brewing hold soft opening of new Sarasota brewery
Fat Point Brewing, a new player in the Bradenton-Sarasota craft beer scene, recently had its soft opening at 257 N. Cattlemen Road, Unit 90, in University Town Center, Yahoo News reported on July 19.

The brewery takes its name from Punta Gorda, which translates from Spanish as “Fat Point,” where the waters of Peace River and Gasparilla Sound meet.

Fat Point was founded in Punta Gorda in 2012, where it introduced brews like Bru Man Chu Belgian Trippel, the Ryeght Angle rye IPA and Oatmeal Stout.

Fat Point staff is still finishing equipment installation at UTC, including for its brewing operation, Justin Poppa, one of Fat Point’s partners, said on July 18.

The brewery will have a full kitchen, but for now is offering a limited menu, including chips and salsa, wings (ghost pepper or Buffalo), coconut shrimp and fries.

Fat Point is in a 2,500-square-foot space and offers inside and outside seating.

“We are appreciative of all the support Benderson Development has given us. It’s exciting to be part of the UTC community,” Poppa said.

Soft opening hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week, and Fat Point is working toward a grand opening in a couple of weeks, Poppa said.

Brewery news USA, WA: Machine House Brewery now open in Hillman City
As of July 19th, Seattle’s Machine House Brewery is now open in the Hillman City neighborhood. The location is familiar to local beer lovers. This was the home of Spinnaker Bay Brewing and then NW Peaks Brewing. The address is 5718 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118 the Washington Beer Blog reported.

The company recently moved out of its longtime home in the Georgetown neighborhood. For the past several weeks Bill Arnott and his team have worked hard to get the doors open in Hillman City.

“After a long month of moving and building we are excited to be back open and pouring our beer for you in our new location in Hillman City,” the company said on Instagram. “We are super excited to be in this neighborhood and we are already feeling right at home!”

“Just like in our old location, we are an all-ages taproom and welcome guests to bring in outside food if you like. We will be bringing back many of our events as we get settled in here.”

Machine House is still working on getting the actual brewhouse up and running, and the outdoor seating area is awaiting some final approval from the city. Otherwise, the new location is open ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Euphoria Heights Brewing Company to become Lock Haven’s first modern-day brewery
The city of Lock Haven is getting its first modern-day brewery as Euphoria Heights Brewing Company has started working towards opening at 216 East Main Street. The new brewery has an estimated opening time of Summer 2024, Breweries in PA reported on July 18.

Co-owner and brewer Noah Schlesinger recently graduated from Penn College’s Brewing and Fermentation program, and along with his father and uncle purchased the Lock Have Elks building, last November 2022.

“We are currently renovating the building and getting it ready for a taproom on the main floor and brewhouse. We are planning on late spring/early summer 2024. This is all dependent on our licensing and equipment,” he said.

Brewery news USA, TX: Neches Brewing Company expanding into former Beaumont brewery
Neches Brewing Company owner Tyler Blount settled into one of the 1970s Dairy Queen orange booths in the taproom of his Port Neches Avenue brewery to talk about plans for a Beaumont expansion in the former Pour Brothers site, the Beaumont Enterprise reported on July 18.

The Beaumont craft brewery closed the 585 Wall St. location in January 2023, despite a community effort that reopened the doors after it first closed in 2022.

Looking to expand Neches Brewing Company’s brew capacity and distribution, Blount purchased Pour Brothers’ brewing equipment at a foreclosure auction.

“It all happened kind of spontaneously, “ Blount said. “We weren’t planning to do that, because we’d just bought a building across the street (from his current establishment on Port Neches Avenue) in 2020.”

But the ready-made site for larger- scale brewing and distribution opportunities was too good to pass up.

“We’re too small with our current set-up to do that here,” he said. “There, we’ll be able to manufacture more beer and get it into grocery stores and other places, like the Gruene Dance Hall in the Hill Country.

They’ve already got a deal to distribute their “Walt Wilkins” brew at the venue, which is famous for big-name country performers like Wilkins ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Thunderwing Brewing eyeing fall opening in Columbus
Sideswipe Brewing may be winding down operations in Columbus later this month, but craft beer fans won’t have to wait long for a new brewery to fill the void, the Columbus Underground reported on July 18.

Long-time home brewer Jason Wing will trade his basement for a five-barrel brewhouse, taking over the space at 2419 Scioto Harper Dr. to launch Thunderwing Brewing this fall.

It all started 10 years ago with a turkey fryer and a Cincinnati Pale Ale out of John Palmer’s How To Brew.

“It was ok, but it was cool because I made it,” Wing says.

He kept brewing in his garage, graduating from a turkey fryer to a keggle (keg + beer kettle) before building out a home brewery in his basement about two years ago. Wing’s also been an active member of Columbus’ home brewing club, SODZ. (Scioto Olentangy Darby Zymurgists… aka the science of fermentation.)

Trading a career in IT to pursue his passion, the step to retail brewery has been several years in the making, and not without some careful calculation from Wing.

Wing says every home brewer has the “I could totally do this as my job” moment, and he initially was no different.

“I really tried to learn ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Mockery Brewing to close its doors for good on August 12
Mockery Brewing, which helped solidify the River North Art District as a brewery-focused neighborhood when it opened in 2014, said on July 17 that it will close its doors, The Denver Post reported.

“We did it! We reached the finish line! After 9 solid years of slinging awesome beers and sharing our little corner of Denver with thousands of amazing people, we have decided to raise our arms in victory and ride off into the sunset,” the brewery, at 3501 Delgany St., posted on Facebook.

“We will be celebrating everything that has been Mockery over the next month and wrapping it all up with a farewell party on Saturday, August 12. Please come out and enjoy one last beer with us and let us toast some of the best friends a brewery could ask for!”

Mockery was founded by Zach and Rachel Rabun when RiNo already had five breweries, but rather than opening in the area that extended along Market and Larimer streets from LoDo, whey picked a spot in the then-nearly empty stretch of Brighton Boulevard.

Their goal at the time was to brew half of their beers in adherence to the 15th century Bavarian beer purity law, Reinheitsgebot, which forbade brewers from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Turtle Swamp Brewing closing down production brewery and taproom
According to a note on its website, Turtle Swamp Brewing in Jamaica Plain is closing down both its taproom and its production brewery, with its last day being August 19 or "when the beer runs out," the Boston Restaurant Talk reported.

No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known what future plans the co-founders might have; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Turtle Swamp Brewing, which first opened on Washington Street in the spring of 2017, also had a beer garden at the Roslindale Substation from 2018 to 2021.

The address for Turtle Swamp Brewing is 3377 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA.

Brewery news USA, ND: Rhombus Guys Brewing Company to cease brewing operations within next few months
Rhombus Guys Brewing Company has closed its taproom on South Third Street and will cease brewing operations within the next few months, according to its owner, the Grand Forks Herald reported on July 20.

Owner Matt Winjum confirmed the taproom is permanently closed.

The brewery, which opened in 2015 and markets itself as Grand Forks’ first microbrewery, will keep its restaurant on Kittson Avenue open.

Winjum said he decided to close the taproom to spend more time with family, and focus on expanding Rhombus Guys’ pizza menu.

“It’s been an awesome eight years,” he said. “We’ve enjoyed all the memories — all the great staff and customers. We’re looking forward to spending more time with our family, and focusing on the pizza side of things. It just looked like the right time for us.”

Winjum said Rhombus Guys will continue to serve beer at its Kittson Street location until supplies last, but estimates that “we have a month or two left, tops.”

Regarding the now-closed taproom, Winjum said he does not have any immediate plans, but is open to renting the space and equipment to an interested business owner.

“There are so many options and possibilities for that,” he said. “If there’s anybody out there that’s passionate ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery and Hitejinro engaged in a price war amid summer heat wave
South Korea’s Oriental Brewery (OB) and Hitejinro are engaged in a price war amid the summer heat wave, The Korea Times reported on July 19.

OB started the competition last month by offering discounts over 40 percent to buyers of cases of 24 350-milliliter beer cans ― selling them for 19,900 won ($15.63) in large grocery stores. The sales event began on June 15, and sold out all stocks in just nine days. It resumed the offer again on July 5.

"We have been running promotional events every year to satisfy consumers' various demands. Sometimes we bundle six beer cans and sometimes we bundle eight," an OB official said. "This year, our marketing team has decided to make it 24, which is an unprecedentedly large number."

After seeing OB's marketing event go off successfully, Hitejinro also started a discount promotion for its Terra beer products ― also 24 cans with 350-milliliter volume ― starting on June 26. Terra was sold for 19,800 won, 100 won cheaper than OB's discounted price.

"We started the event to meet with intensifying promotional competition for beer products in summer. Price competitiveness is very important for the domestic beer market in winning the overall market share. Even a 100 ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Russia hands Danone, Carlsberg assets to nephew of Putin-linked Chechen leader
Russia named the nephew of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and an ally of President Vladimir Putin to head the seized local assets of France’s Danone SA and Denmark’s Carlsberg A/S, Al Arabiya reported on July 19.

Yakub Zakriev, 32, who’s Chechnya’s agriculture minister, is now listed as general director of Danone Russia, according to the official Spark-Interfax disclosure service. He’s a nephew of Kadyrov, the Chechen ruler who’s a protege of Putin and has been repeatedly accused of human rights violations in the southern Russian republic.

The Federal Property Management Agency also appointed Taimuraz Bolloyev to lead Carlsberg’s Baltika Brewing Co., according to a spokesman for the Russian company. Russia’s RBC and Vedomosti newspapers reported the appointments earlier.

The change to the management of Baltika Breweries has “been made without the knowledge or approval by Carlsberg Group,” the company said in an emailed statement on Wednesday. “It is unclear to Carlsberg Group what implications this development will have on the ongoing operations of Baltika Breweries in Russia as well as the current sales process.”

The yogurt maker and the brewer had both been trying to leave Russia. Russia on Sunday seized control of the local subsidiaries of Danone and Carlsberg under a decree Putin ...More info on site

Brewery news Denmark & Italy: Royal Unibrew Group acquires Birra Castelo’s production facility in San Giorgio di Nogaro
The Royal Unibrew Group, a multi-beverage company, announced on July 21 the signing of the agreement for the acquisition of the San Giorgio di Nogaro plant in the province of Udine, from Birra Castello. This strategic operation "contributes to the growth of Royal Unibrew in Italy, allows the company to further expand its activities in international markets and to increase the production capacity of the Group," EFA News reported citing a company press release.

The acquisition of the facility, with an estimated potential production capacity of up to 1 million hectolitres of beer per year, "will significantly enhance Royal Unibrew's production and packaging capacity for cans and glass bottles in Italy,” the company said.

“Equipped with two filling lines, this facility will allow the group to strengthen its presence in Italy, enabling the company to meet the growing demand for its products both locally and internationally.”

The investment in an additional production plant in Italy comes on top of Royal Unibrew's earlier acquisition of Terme di Crodo in 2018. The Terme di Crodo plant, acquired by Campari Group, produces Royal Unibrew's local soft drinks: Lemonsoda, Oransoda and Lemonsoda Energy Activator.

“We are pleased to announce the acquisition of a production plant from ...More info on site
