Singapore & Myanmar: Singapore-listed Fraser and Neave to invest $14 mln in another brewery in Myanmar
|
Singapore-listed Fraser and Neave Limited (F&N) plans to invest 19.2 million Singaporean dollars (US$ 14 million) in Myanmar to build a new brewery through a joint venture with local beverage conglomerate Win Brothers, according to a statement from F&N, The Irrawaddy reported on July 26.
The brewery will be built on 35 acres of land with a lease term of 50 years, a statement from the company controlled by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi said. The location of the site and the name of the beer that will be brewed was not mentioned.
F&N said it had paid S$ 1.3 million to acquire its brewing license, but the process of acquiring the land had yet to be completed.
“Completion of the Land Acquisition is subject to fulfilment of conditions under the Acquisition Agreement, including the obtainment of relevant regulatory approvals, conversion of the relevant land into industrial land and entry into long-term leases in respect of the relevant land. Accordingly, there is no certainty or assurance that the Land Acquisition will materialise,” it said.
F&N established a joint venture, Sapphire Brewery Myanmar Limited (SBML), with Win Brothers in March. F&N holds an 80 percent stake in SBML and Win Brothers, which is owned by

USA: Bud Light falls to the fourth place in popularity at restaurants and bars
|
Bud Light fell from the first place to the fourth place behind Miller Lite, Michelob Ultra, and Coors Light on the list of most popular beer brands in restaurants and bars, according to a study, NY Post reported on July 24.
The report by hospitality data firm Union found that sales of Bud Light, whose partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney sparked a nationwide boycott, fell by 34% at high-volume bars and restaurants in the second quarter.
In contrast, Miller Lite, which is property of the Molson Coors conglomerate, was catapulted to the top spot, seeing a 20.7% increase in sales during the three months that ended on June 30, according to data from Union.
Michelob Ultra, which like Bud Light is a product of Anheuser-Busch InBev, took second place, seeing a 3.6% uptick in sales.
Coors Light, which is also part of the Molson Coors family of beers, came in third place. Its sales leaped by 19.4% in the second quarter, according to Union.
Other beers are threatening to leapfrog Bud Light, including Irish lager Guinness and the Mexican upstart Modelo Especial.
The latest sales figures at retail outlets show that Modelo and Yuengling have been taking up Bud Light’s market share.

South Korea: Hitejinro hops on new beer trend as sales of Kelly overflow
|
Under the scorching summer sun of July 19 as temperatures inside the car reach 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), the Gangwon brewery of Korean liquor company Hitejinro is alive with the sound of clanging beer bottles gliding on conveyor belts, ready to provide some much-needed refreshment, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on July 25.
After a two-hour car journey from Seoul, visitors can witness the entire brewing process unfolding before their eyes — from the washing and filling of bottles to the final labeling and packaging. Hitejinro's Gangwon Brewery stands as Korea's largest beer factory with an annual production capacity of 500,000 kiloliters (132 million gallons).
On one side of the brewery, the production focuses on Hitejinro's prized Terra brand, which is encased in green bottles.
In tandem, on the other side emerges Kelly, housed in unique amber-colored bottles. Hitejinro wishes to reclaim its throne in the domestic beer industry with Kelly as the company approaches its landmark 100th anniversary in 2024.
Kelly made its debut in April, four years after the release of Terra in March 2019. According to data compiled by large retail stores like Emart and Lotte Mart, the new beer

Australia: Coopers Brewery says its shelf and floor space increasingly cut back by liquor retailing giants
|
The managing director of Australia’s third largest beer group, Coopers Brewery, says his company is having its shelf and floor space for packaged beer increasingly cut back by liquor retailing giants Endeavour Group and Coles, AFR reported on July 25.
Tim Cooper accused the big two retail players of favouring the two large beer companies in Australia, Lion and Asahi Group, which acquired Carlton & United Breweries for $16 billion in 2020, giving it ownership of beer brands Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and Crown Lager.
Dr Cooper also said private label beer brands owned by Endeavour and Coles were getting preferential treatment on the shelves of liquor stores they own.
Dr Cooper said the situation had worsened with hotel acquisitions by Endeavour Group, as previously independent bottle shops were converted to the BWS brand operated by Endeavour.
He said Endeavour had bought four pubs in South Australia in the past year and had converted the bottle shops to BWS. Coopers shelf space had dropped by 50 per cent at those outlets, he said.
Endeavour operates 264 Dan Murphy’s outlets and 1437 BWS stores in its retail division and it also runs 353 pubs. Dr Cooper said Coopers Brewery’s market share of packaged beer sales in

Germany: Winter barley harvest approaching its end with crop size larger than expected
|
Germany’s winter barley harvest is approaching its end in favourable mainly dry weather with the crop size larger than expected, the association of German farmers DBV said.
The crop of winter barley, generally used for animal feed, will increase to about 9.5 million metric tons from 8.7 million metric tons last year after expanded plantings and higher yields, the DBV said.
This was up on the association’s previous forecast of 9.03 million metric tons on July 4.
Winter barley did not suffer as much as feared from dryness in spring and early summer and yields were larger than expected, the association said.
Harvest yields rose to an average 7.4 metric ton per hectare from 7.1 metric tons last year. Winter barley harvest quality is generally good, it added.
Harvesting of Germany’s wheat and rapeseed has hardly started, it said, with these two crops believed to have suffered more from the dry spring weather.

Argentina: Argentina’s government introduces dollar corn exchange campaign
|
The government of Argentina has included corn in the Export Increase Program that contemplates a differential dollar rate to boost the country's foreign exchange reserves until Aug. 31, a release from the Ministry of Agriculture announced July 25, S&P Global reported.
According to resolution 295/2023 published in the Official Gazette, the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture incorporated corn and malting barley into the Export Increase Program, which defined an increase in the differential exchange rate to Argentinian Peso 340/$1 for regional economies. The increase in the official exchange rate for corn exports is estimated to strengthen the reserves of the central bank.
The unofficial dollar exchange rate in market is rumored to be around Peso 536-Peso 541 to $1 against the official value at Peso 270-Peso 283 to $1.
Argentina's government expects to raise $2 billion with the new corn dollar. Grain corn, flint, popcorn and malting barley are to be incorporated into the program, having not been present in previous versions of the program. The payment of export duties must be carried out until Nov. 30 in accordance with the relevant regulation.
The resolution highlighted that "it is necessary to continue the implementation of policies that tend to strengthen the reserves of the Central

UK: Single malt Welsh whisky gets registered under the UK Geographical Indication scheme
|
Single malt Welsh whisky has been successfully registered under the UK Geographical Indication (UK GI) scheme on July 24, which protects its name, authenticity and characteristics, The Spirits Business reported.
Food and farming secretary Thérèse Coffey announced the move, which gives single malt Welsh whisky the same status as other Welsh fare.
It is the first new UK spirit drink application to be registered and protected under new scheme, which was established in 2021 following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. It ensures that certain food and drink products can continue to receive legal protection against imitation and misuse.
Single malt Welsh whisky joins other classic British products receiving protection, such as Scotch whisky.
“Single malt Welsh whisky is widely acclaimed for its lightness of character and I am pleased to announce it will be the first protected spirit under our UKGI scheme,” said Coffey.
“It shows how the UK government is ready to get behind the best of British food and drink from across the nation – to boost sales at home and abroad, create jobs and grow our economy.
“I look forward to meeting some of the distillers at the Royal Welsh Show and celebrating this unique product’s wonderful history.”
