UK: Beer drinkers prioritising value for money through premium options – Heineken Beer Report

Consumers are prioritising value for money through premium options and quality experiences despite financial challenges, according to the Heineken Beer Report 2023.
Beer drinkers are looking to treat themselves when going out, according to the brewer’s second annual report. Many consumers are doing so through trade-up options, with world lager growing value share to 27% during 2022 (up from 22.7% in 2021).
The report revealed 18 to 34-year-olds in particular to be driving this trend, being less likely to go without a premium beer than any other age group.
Heineken UK on-trade director Will Rice said: “In its second year, Heineken UK's Beer Report continues to unveil profit-driving trends and data for operators.
“In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, more than ever we’re seeing a greater emphasis on ‘smart spending’ to maximise the return from disposable income.”
What’s more, beer drinkers are also opting for ‘accessible premiumisation’. This means they’re seeking beers that they perceive to be higher quality, but not necessarily trading all the way up to world lager.
Instead, they may move from classic beer brands to the premium or premium 4% category.

Nigeria: International Breweries posts N113.1 bln loss in over 5 years

International Breweries Plc has failed to harness the vast opportunities in the brewery market and has serially declared loss in the last five years and six months, The Whistler NG reported on July 31.
The brewer has lost a cumulative of N113.1bn from 2018 to June 2023, analysis by The Whistler has revealed.
Based on its financial accounts for December 20217–June 2023, the last time the company declared profit was in December 2017 when they raked in N874.6 million from a revenue of N36.5bn.
IntBrew’s flagship products are Hero, Trophy, Budweiser, Beta Malt, and Grand.
The brewery company was founded in 1971 by Lawrence Omole with an installed capacity of 200,000 hectolitres per annum when it started production of Trophy Larger in seven years later.
Listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1995, the company expanded its capacity to 500,000 hectolitres annually.
IntBrew merged with SABMiller Plc in 2012 and entered an alliance with the Castel group. It further merged with Intafact Beverages Limited and Pabod Breweries Limited.
IntBrew was a profit-making venture prior to its downturn. In 2015 it made N1.94bn; 2014 N2.1bn. It made N2.32bn in 2013.

Vietnam: Vietnam considering luxury tax on alcohol

In late June, Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance (MOF) submitted to the government a proposal on amending the luxury tax law, VietNamNet reported on July 30.
Several days later, a workshop on collecting opinions about the proposal was held, drawing public interest. While many enterprises and experts applaud the amendment, others have raised questions about the time of application and the new tax calculation method.
Nguyen Van Viet, chair of the Vietnam Beer Alcohol Beverage Association (VBA), said the beverage industry serves daily demand and attaches importance to cultural values, and develops alongside increased living standards, and tourism and trade development.
Viet said the sector is affected by transport from other countries, and businesses are witnessing a decline of up to 15-20 percent.
“In such conditions, we hope the state doesn’t think of raising tax rates at this time, and the tax increase should not be mentioned until after 2025 so that enterprises have time to recover production,” Viet said.
The representatives of some enterprises, while agreeing with the solution, asked to reconsider the time of application. They said the tax rate is already relatively high, and unfairness exists for beer products with different alcohol concentration levels.

Sri Lanka: Agriculture Minister orders suspension of use of rice in beer and animal feed production

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Ministry Secretary to immediately suspend the use of rice for the production of animal feed and beer, Newsfirst reported on July 31.
The decision was taken to face the food shortage that may occur in the future due to the arid weather conditions experienced at present.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera further informed to submit a letter prepared in this regard to the Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs and the Presidential Food Safety Committee.
Paddy farmers are currently facing a severe crisis due to the dry weather.
The Ministry of Agriculture says that if there is no significant rainfall in the coming days, there may be a shortage of rice, as the expected paddy harvest for the Yala Season cannot be reaped.
