Brewery news USA, MO: 9 Foot Brewing hoping to launch in Blue Springs soon
Richard and Teri Cartwright are no strangers to the craft beer scene. The homebrew club they belong to, the Kansas City Bier Meisters, recently won the title of Homebrew Club of the Year from the American Homebrewers Association for the second consecutive year.

Now, Richard and Teri are going pro, Flatland KC reported on July 31.

In a recent Facebook post, the Cartwrights announced plans to open 9 Foot Brewing in Wind Shift Brewing’s former space in Blue Springs as soon as they get state and local approvals. In the meantime, they’ll keep homebrewing so they’re ready for the day they can open.

In addition to homebrewing, the Cartwrights are no strangers to the local beer community. Teri is the instructor for Crane Brewing’s Sip & Stretch yoga events. Richard has helped out at Wind Shift doing everything from hop harvests to canning and collaborating with them on his smoked porter. He’s also collaborated with Crane Brewing on a rainbow sherbet Berliner Weisse. They have also poured at multiple KC Nanobrew Festivals throughout the years.

While folks in Blue Springs are mourning the loss of Wind Shift, they shouldn’t have to wait too long for 9 Foot Brewing to open.

Good luck to the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: March First Brewing and Distilling to open new Cincinnati location next week
March First Brewing and Distilling's new Fountain Square location opens next week, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported on August 1.

The brewery, cidery and distillery is taking over the former Rock Bottom Brewing space, located at 10 Fountain Square Plaza. The grand opening kicks off at 11 a.m. Aug. 10, according to March First's Facebook post.

March First Cincinnati will operate as a bar, restaurant and taproom and marks the company's second location, with its other residing in Sycamore Township.

According to its website, the Downtown location will feature 36 taps for craft beer and seltzers, as well as cocktails by Cincinnati Distilling. Customers can find all of March First's craft brands, including Woodburn Brewing, FigLeaf Brewing and Astra Hard Seltzers.

The brewery signed a lease for the space with building owner Fifth Third Bancorp last August.

Brewery news USA, NM: Boese Brothers Brewing to bring a new location to Rio Rancho
A New Mexico-based Boese Brothers Brewing will bring a new location to the Las Fuentes neighborhood of Rio Rancho after the site plan was approved at the Rio Rancho Governing Body meeting on July 27, the Rio Rancho Observer reported.

The brewery, taproom and restaurant will begin construction at 808 Pinehurst Road. This will be the sixth owned by the company, which has locations in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Los Alamos.

The company is owned by brothers Sam and George Boese, who opened the first location in downtown Albuquerque in 2015.

“We’re very excited about the opportunity,” George Boese said.

Mayor Greggory Hull ultimately backed the project but expressed concerns about the building’s location. It is located next to a lift station for wastewater, which Hull said occasionally results in a the city receiving calls regarding a foul odor in the area.

He clarified that because the lift station is high quality, the complaints are an infrequent occurrence that are usually only prevalent when the weather is hot.

“This one is state of the art, but I just want to make sure that you guys know what’s there,” Hull said.

Jim Strozier, principal at Consensus Planning, Inc., said that the company is aware of this and ultimately ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Ursa Minor Brewing hosts soft opening of expanding operations
Ursa Minor Brewing has more room to serve customers as they have expanded their space, Fox21 Online reported on July 29.

The brewery outgrew their original taproom and got a new facility to keep most of their production at. Now the taproom has 2 bars, lots of indoor seating, and they are even working on a mud kitchen outside for kids.

A fun fact about the new bar is that it was built from a tree that was struck by lightning on Island Lake. The founder of the brewery is very excited to share the expanded space with the community.

” We brew beer to bring people together, to share their stories, to talk, to enjoy each other. And that’s why we do what we do. So, it feels amazing,” said Ben Hugus, founder of Ursa Minor Brewing.

The soft opening for Ursa Minor’s expansion aligned perfectly with All Pints North, a craft beer festival taking place Saturday at Bayfront Festival Park.

Brewery news USA, CA: Enterprise Brewing Co. being resurrected in San Francisco
With San Francisco still reeling from the news earlier this summer that Anchor Brewing Company was shutting off its taps, local beer drinkers may take comfort in the resurrection of a local brew that’s been defunct since Prohibition, The San Francisco Standard reported on August 1.

Veteran beermakers Cameron McDonald and Jesse Hayter are opening Enterprise Brewing Co. at 1150 Howard St. in the space formerly occupied by Cellarmaker Brewery’s taphouse.

McDonald’s credentials include stints at Bay Area brew houses Seven Stills and Standard Deviant, while Hayter worked at the Presidio-based Fort Point Beer Company, where the pair met.

The new brewery’s Saturday, August 5 opening will be followed by weekly parties on every Saturday in August.

The original Enterprise Brewing Co. opened in 1873 in a Mission alleyway about eight blocks away from its current location. It survived the devastating 1906 earthquake before the 18th Amendment forbidding the consumption and sale of alcohol shut it down in 1920.

McDonald, a Palo Alto native whose father and grandfather were born in San Francisco, hopes to help revive San Francisco’s identity as a beer-making city and honor SoMa’s industrial heritage by opening a friendly neighborhood watering hole with “approachable beers” that functions ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Powderhaus Brewing Co. up for sale in Boise
A popular Boise brewery is up for sale, the Idaho Business Review reported on August 1.

The brokerage team of Adam Bledsoe and Chris Pearson with TOK Commercial has been selected by the owners of Powderhaus Brewing Co. to bring the business to market, offering the local brewery for sale, according to a news release.

Listing price is $3.5 million.

Owners Mark and Lisa Schmidt established Powderhaus Brewing Co., 9719 W. Brewery news USA, PA: Töska Restaurant & Brewery now open in Philadelphia
Töska Restaurant & Brewery, located at 7136 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia is now open with an Albanian-American inspired menu featuring wood-fired pizza and house-made beers, Breweries in PA reported on August 1.

Töska is the latest concept from the team behind M2O Burgers, and the first of its kind in the area. Owners and brothers Jim, Leo, and Pep Osmanollaj’s family came to the United States in 2000 following the Kosovo War of 1999, and discovered that there are no restaurants in the Philadelphia area that include their Albanian culture, something they wanted to change.

“We want this to be a culture experience,” said the Osmanollaj brothers. “We took inspiration from Albania and where we grew up and incorporated it into everything here, from the artwork on the walls to the lighting and the name Töska itself, which is an Albanian dialect.”

The menu offers a variety of shareables, wood-fired pizza, burgers, BBQ, kids and vegetarian options, and much more. More details can be seen on the full menu in the restaurant and online.

For the brewery aspect, the team has brought in Brendan Breslin, who has eight years of brewery experience under his belt, and most recently worked with Stickman Brews in Royersford, PA. ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Beer drinkers prioritising value for money through premium options – Heineken Beer Report
Consumers are prioritising value for money through premium options and quality experiences despite financial challenges, according to the Heineken Beer Report 2023.

Beer drinkers are looking to treat themselves when going out, according to the brewer’s second annual report. Many consumers are doing so through trade-up options, with world lager growing value share to 27% during 2022 (up from 22.7% in 2021).

The report revealed 18 to 34-year-olds in particular to be driving this trend, being less likely to go without a premium beer than any other age group.

Heineken UK on-trade director Will Rice said: “In its second year, Heineken UK's Beer Report continues to unveil profit-driving trends and data for operators.

“In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, more than ever we’re seeing a greater emphasis on ‘smart spending’ to maximise the return from disposable income.”

What’s more, beer drinkers are also opting for ‘accessible premiumisation’. This means they’re seeking beers that they perceive to be higher quality, but not necessarily trading all the way up to world lager.

Instead, they may move from classic beer brands to the premium or premium 4% category.

These ‘accessible premium’ brands often tap into trends and boast premium quality cues, such as taste credentials or authentic heritage, but ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: International Breweries posts N113.1 bln loss in over 5 years
International Breweries Plc has failed to harness the vast opportunities in the brewery market and has serially declared loss in the last five years and six months, The Whistler NG reported on July 31.

The brewer has lost a cumulative of N113.1bn from 2018 to June 2023, analysis by The Whistler has revealed.

Based on its financial accounts for December 20217–June 2023, the last time the company declared profit was in December 2017 when they raked in N874.6 million from a revenue of N36.5bn.

IntBrew’s flagship products are Hero, Trophy, Budweiser, Beta Malt, and Grand.

Brewery news Vietnam: Vietnam considering luxury tax on alcohol
In late June, Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance (MOF) submitted to the government a proposal on amending the luxury tax law, VietNamNet reported on July 30.

Several days later, a workshop on collecting opinions about the proposal was held, drawing public interest. While many enterprises and experts applaud the amendment, others have raised questions about the time of application and the new tax calculation method.

Nguyen Van Viet, chair of the Vietnam Beer Alcohol Beverage Association (VBA), said the beverage industry serves daily demand and attaches importance to cultural values, and develops alongside increased living standards, and tourism and trade development.

Viet said the sector is affected by transport from other countries, and businesses are witnessing a decline of up to 15-20 percent.

“In such conditions, we hope the state doesn’t think of raising tax rates at this time, and the tax increase should not be mentioned until after 2025 so that enterprises have time to recover production,” Viet said.

The representatives of some enterprises, while agreeing with the solution, asked to reconsider the time of application. They said the tax rate is already relatively high, and unfairness exists for beer products with different alcohol concentration levels.

The beer products with lower alcohol concentration levels ...More info on site

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Agriculture Minister orders suspension of use of rice in beer and animal feed production
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Ministry Secretary to immediately suspend the use of rice for the production of animal feed and beer, Newsfirst reported on July 31.

The decision was taken to face the food shortage that may occur in the future due to the arid weather conditions experienced at present.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera further informed to submit a letter prepared in this regard to the Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs and the Presidential Food Safety Committee. Paddy farmers are currently facing a severe crisis due to the dry weather.

The Ministry of Agriculture says that if there is no significant rainfall in the coming days, there may be a shortage of rice, as the expected paddy harvest for the Yala Season cannot be reaped.
