Brewery news USA, CA: Harmonic Brewing to close original taproom and brewing facility
Harmonic Brewing, one of San Francisco’s popular craft breweries, will close its original taproom and brewing facility, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on August 3.

The company announced it will shutter its brewery at 1050 26th St. later this year after eight years of brewing and pouring pints of its refreshing ales and lagers. Brewmaster Eddie Gobbo told the Chronicle several factors forced the closing: chief among them a lagging recovery from the pandemic, lower spending, recent break-ins and the increasing costs of brewing materials.

Ultimately, the company wasn’t able to reach an agreement for a new lease with its landlord. The last day for drinking will be in October.

“We’ve been ingrained in the fabric of Dogpatch for a long time,” Gobbo said. “For us to lose our mothership in Dogpatch is a hit to the community as much as it is for us.”

Harmonic’s Dogpatch space opened in August 2015. Inside, the 15-barrel system produced beers like its signature easy-drinking Harmonic kolsch and toasty Starship lager. Production at the space is limited to a yearly 1,200 barrels of beer, keeping the focus on making small batches of beer for its taprooms and San Francisco accounts.

The brewery didn’t just help Harmonic gain ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Broad Street Brewing already open in Bristol Township
A new brewery recently opened in Bristol Township, adding new life to a once-empty shopping center, LevittownNow.com reported on August 2.

At the end of June, Broad Street Brewing opened the doors on the new production facility and taproom at the former Upper Deck Bar and Grill in the 2600 block of Durham Road. The brewery shares the shopping center with Coalition Barber Lounge and Sal’s Italian Deli.

The brewery is owned by Tim Lohse, Ed Webber, and Brandon Wellington, all Lower Bucks County locals.

The name of the brewery business comes from the famed Broad Street in Philadelphia, where Wellington once lived.

This week, Wellington told LevittownNow.com Broad Street Brewing aims to create brews that are “approachable” and also foster that environment in their freshly-opened taproom.

The open concept of the taproom features brick and wood-paneled walls. Parts of the ceiling feature greenery. More than 100 people can fit comfortably in the taproom, according to Wellington.

“We are more than just a brewery. We are a part of the community that we serve. We believe beer is a social beverage that brings people together, and we strive to create a welcoming environment where all are welcome to enjoy a pint of our brews,” according to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: NoFo Brew Co’s new Gainesville location already open
NoFo Brew Co opens their new facility in Gainesville, Georgia August 2nd a year after the location was officially announced, the Beer Street Journal reported on August 3.

The brewery purchased the building in June of 2022, located on the corner of High Street and the Midland Greenway near the heart of downtown Gainesville. The 18,746 brewery is situated near a pond and a dog park, and boasts a 3,308 square foot patio. Brewery news Canada, ON: Muddy York Brewing planning second facility by spring 2024
Muddy York Brewing has announced plans to expand to a second location in an historic building in Whitchurch-Stouffville, a town approximately 50 km north of Toronto in Ontario’s York Region, Canadian Beer News reported on August 2.

“Since opening our taproom doors in 2016, our location in East York Toronto has catered to a lively array of families, friends and local community members that has made the space homey, warm and inclusive,” says Susan Michalek, co-owner of Muddy York, in a statement. “It became clear to us what our strengths were and in late 2021 we began searching for an ideal neighbourhood for Muddy York’s expansion. Not only did we want to offer a similar, uncompromising and friendly craft beer customer experience but we also were looking for a space that could integrate an exceptional food experience.”

“The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville really caught our attention,” adds co-owner Jeff Manol “It’s a rapidly growing centre with a very passionate and engaged community that doesn’t yet have a brewery to call its own. Stouffville is close to the GTA, has an extensive trail system that hosts a variety of recreational activities and borders many municipalities. The new location will become a destination for locals ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Minocqua Brewing Company forced to close its doors under decision of Oneida County zoning committee
A Northwoods brewpub known for marketing beers named after Democratic politicians had its ability to operate revoked on August 1 after a yearslong battle over local zoning rules, the Wisconsin Public Radio reported.

Under the decision by an Oneida County zoning committee, Minocqua Brewing Company would be forced to close its doors. Owner Kirk Bangstad has vowed to appeal the decision and remain open as long as possible.

The dispute involved parking regulations and a contested plan by Bangstad to open an outdoor beer garden. But in social media posts and statements to news media, Bangstad has repeatedly claimed that he is being targeted by a conservative board because of his liberal political views. Bangstad briefly ran for Congress as a Democrat in 2015, and he ran for state Assembly in 2020.

In addition to the brewpub, Bangstad operates the Minocqua Brewing Company Super PAC, which has purchased billboard ads attacking Republican politicians. Among the beers its website advertises are Evers Ale, named for Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, a Tammy Shandy for U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, as well as WOKE Coffee and Democratic-themed T-shirts.

Public meeting on August 1 followed a chaotic hearing last week that officials ended early after committee members ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Lo Rez Brewing to close in September
Lo Rez Brewing, which opened in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood in 2016, announced its closing Wednesday, August 2, with the co-founder calling it a “pandemic casualty”, Yahoo News reported on August 3.

On social media, co-founder Dave Dahl said the taproom and distribution revenue never recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, which shuttered restaurants, bars and breweries across the country.

“Our income is down, our expenses are up, we’re too far out of whack. Lo Rez is no longer financially viable,” Dahl said on Instagram.

The pandemic changed the whole industry, Dahl told the Tribune on August 3. Everything from the producers, distributors and consumer habits changed, prompting Dahl to eventually embrace the end of the brewery.

Since the announcement on August 2, Dahl said the outpouring of support has been “just wonderful to see.” He’s heard from former employees, friends and strangers who have all expressed what the community has meant to them.

“It’s wonderful to see the people I’m close to react so positively. And it is even more flooring to see people I don’t even know, that outpour of love and gratitude. It’s pretty amazing,” Dahl said.

Whether it was staring at spreadsheets or brewing late into the night, Dahl said ending each day with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Bowler Hat Brewery closing permanently this month
Bowler Hat Brewery in Madison is closing permanently this month, making it the third local brewer in just a couple of weeks’ time to close its doors, Hville Blast reported on August 2.

Bowler Hat joins Huntsville’s Salty Nut Brewery and Fractal Brewing Project as local craft beer makers to announce a closing.

Bowler Hat Brewing Company, located at 7429 Hwy 72 W, Unit C, Madison, AL, 35758, opened in 2020 and specialized in small-batch craft beers with some of the best seasonal brews in town.

Owners Matt and Anne Murphy made the announcement of the local brewery closing via Facebook Tuesday, August 1, saying the last day of operations would be August 11.

Brewery news USA, OR: Culmination Brewing likely to close within weeks
Culmination Brewing, one of Portland’s rising stars and best breweries just a few years ago, is likely to close within weeks, doomed by declines in packaged beer sales and rising costs, co-founder Tomas Sluiter confirmed on August 3 to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

“We’re circling the drain,” Sluiter said when asked about a possible closure of the brewery and taproom in Northeast Portland’s Kerns neighborhood. “There’s no way out of this.”

Asked if the closure would be within days or weeks, he simply replied, “Yes.”

Sluiter co-founded Culmination with his wife, April Dudley Sluiter, and a group of investors in 2014. Crowds were immediately drawn to the brewery’s imaginative, refined beers and cozy setting.

But when the pandemic hit, Sluiter said Culmination’s distributor, Columbia Distributing, turned its attention away from craft breweries in favor of national brands. That caused a precipitous drop in can sales — essentially Culmination’s lifeline during COVID-19.

Sluiter still owns a minority stake in Culmination but said he gave up control to the brewery’s board of directors.

“I saw the writing on the wall a while ago, so I was trying to put together a separate (company) that could buy Culmination’s assets and some other breweries to create a brewing alliance,” he said. “But ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation to invest US$50 mln in boosting production capacity
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) listed Delta Corporation plans to invest US$50 million over the next five years to boost its production capacity, The Herald reported on August 1.

Zimbabwe’s largest beer and sparkling beverages maker said it would spend between 30 and 35 percent of its operating profit on plant, equipment and ancillary services.

The company has since 2017, invested more than US$169 million in modernising its manufacturing and bottling plants, distribution fleet, cold drink equipment and ancillary systems.

About a month ago, the company commissioned three new production lines after investing US$71 million.

“All the businesses are performing very well. Capacity utilisation is on average above 80 percent and almost 100 percent in some businesses hence the need to invest US$70 million in new packaging plants commissioned by President Mnangagwa,” said Delta.

New plant investments are split into lager beers US$15 million, Chibuku Super US$20 million, soft drinks PET Line US$10 million, vehicle fleet US$5 million, containers US15 million and US$1 million in its associate company, Afdis.

The new lager plant runs four types of bottles; 375ml and 340ml bottles which produce 42 000 bottles per hour or 700 bottles per minute as well as 750ml and 660ml bottles which run at 25 000 ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries announces price hikes
Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, the makers of Star, Heineken, Maltina, and Goldberg, has said from August 10, 2023, prices of these drinks would go up, Business Post Nigeria reported.

The decision, conveyed in an internal memo dated August 1, 2023, and seen by Business Post, cited the need to review prices due to the continued rise in input costs and the necessity to mitigate its impact.

“This is to inform you that we will review the prices of some of our SKUs effective Thursday 10th August 2023,” the internal letter signed by Mr Ayo Lawal, the Sales Director, said.

“In appreciation of our great partnership and your commitment, we will deliver at current prices all open orders that are fully funded and created in our system before 00.00hr on Thursday, 10 August 2023.

“While thanking you for your commitment to our great partnership, be rest assured that we will continue to support your sales/distribution efforts as always.

Brewery news UK: Brewing sector hits back at Prime Minister
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s appearance at The Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) has provoked an impassioned response from the beer sector, The Drinks Business reported on August 2.

Sunak, who attended the beer festival at London’s Olympia stadium, was there to promote the government’s changes to alcohol duty, the biggest change to the system in 140 years, which came into effect from 1 August 2023.

Despite the Prime Minister’s efforts, his presence fell flat for brewers and beer business owners since the photo opportunity also followed Sunak’s recent claims that Brexit had secured cheaper beer for Brits, after he told the nation back in the spring: “We reformed the alcohol duties that mean this summer you will be able to get cheaper beer in pubs. These are all very tangible benefits of Brexit that I’ve already delivered.” A self-congratulatory soundbite he has since been heavily criticised by the brewing sector for making, owing to it being too simplistic to give context to the real issues affecting the cost of beer.

Speaking to the drinks business, Lancashire-based Lune Brew Co sales and marketing director Justin Rivett, said: “I don’t think he understands the plight of anyone in the UK right now.”

Continuing, he said, “From ...More info on site
