USA: Craft beer exports total 230,999 barrels last year
|
The Brewers Association Export Development Program has assisted American craft breweries send their ales and lagers to nearly every beer market in the world, Forbes reported on August 8.
In 2022, 230,999 barrels (over 7 million gallons) of beer, worth over $71 million, was exported from America’s craft breweries, according to the Brewers Association. “The number of exporting American craft brewers has grown from just a handful of 10-15 companies 20 years ago, to more than 150 small and independent brewers shipping beer overseas annually,” says Steve Parr, director of international relations for the Brewers Association.
The Export Development Program is a collaboration between the Brewers Association and the Market Access Program of the Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. Beer, brewed from barley and other cereal crops, and from hops, is an agricultural food product. Through the EDP, the Brewers Association and the Department of Agriculture share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities that help build commercial export markets for American craft beer.
“Awareness of American craft beer has never been higher, and international beer markets offer a way to diversify sales, hedge domestic sales, and grow your business if done well,” says Parr.

USA: AB InBev to dispose of eight brands significantly cutting its craft beer portfolio
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) announced on August 7 that it will sell eight craft brands to Tilray Brands, significantly cutting AB InBev’s craft beer portfolio. Tilray, a Canadian cannabis company, will expand its growing craft holdings, which currently include SweetWater Brewing, Montauk Brewing, Green Flash, and Alpine Beer Co. The deal is expected to close in September, 2023.
The momentous deal will include Shock Top, Breckenridge Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Redhook Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Square Mile Cider Company, and Hiball Energy, which AB InBev discontinued in May of this year. The purchase price is equal to $85 million in cash, according to an 8-K filing by Tilray.
The transaction will include current employees, breweries, and associated brewpubs. In total, Tilray will acquire production facilities in Portland and Bend, Ore., Littleton, Colo., and Patchogue, N.Y., as well as eight new brewpubs across the country.
Although Tilray began as a cannabis-focused brand, the company’s CEO and chairman Irwan D. Simon is enthusiastic about the potential in the craft brewing industry. Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria struggles with USD scarcity to pay foreign loans
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc, a unit of Diageo Plc, has revealed that it is struggling to obtain US Dollars to pay back foreign-currency loans in the country, the Business Post Nigeria reported on August 7.
This is despite the recent liberalisation of the foreign-exchange market by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as part of efforts to help to revive the Nigerian economy and boost FX supply.
Supply of the greenback is still limited relative to demand, and the rates have started widening, reaching more than N100 between the official rate and the black market rate.
As a result of this unavailability, Nigerian companies with significant Dollar debts have suffered significant currency-related losses.
It has not been easier for beer manufacturers, especially Nigerian Breweries, makers of Heineken, Star, and Maltina. The brewer is planning to upwardly review the prices of some of its Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) from Thursday, August 10, 2023.
On its part, the Diageo subsidiary, Guinness Nigeria Plc, declared a loss of N18.2 billion for 2023 compared to N15.7 billion profit in the previous year after its finance costs soared on the currency devaluation.

Luxembourg: Non-alcoholic beer becoming more popular in Luxembourg

Low in calories and safe for drivers - non-alcoholic beer is becoming more popular in Luxembourg these days, RTL Today reported on August 4.
One in two Germans now drink non-alcoholic beer "from time to time", and it appears the trend is taking off within Luxembourg's borders as well. Production and consumption is increasing by 20% every year.
Non-alcoholic beer has existed for decades, but its popularity has exploded in recent years as the product's reputation has evolved from an emergency solution to an enjoyable drink in itself.
François Lecronier, who is responsible for the drinks section in one of Luxembourg's big supermarkets, explains that "it is effectively a competitor for soft drinks, rather than beer itself. We certainly notice a difference in sales over the summer months."
Minimal production - less than 1% brewed in Luxembourg
The brewery in Wiltz has been producing non-alcoholic beer for 3 years, recently adding a Radler variant to the array of products on offer. However, production of non-alcoholic drinks still represents just 1% of the brewery's total production, despite an annual increase of 15-20%. Taiwan: Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp announces recommended retail price hike
|
Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp (TTL) said on August 8 that it has increased the recommended retail price of Taiwan Beer and its own-brand cigarettes due to rising raw material costs, the Taipei Times reported.
TTL said it had raised the recommended retail price of Taiwan Beer products — Gold Label, Classic and 18 Days Draft — by NT$5 (US$0.16) per bottle or can, effective from Tuesday last week.
In addition, the recommended retail price of TTL cigarettes has been raised by between NT$5 and NT$10 per pack, the state-owned company said.
The company said that it would not profit from the price hike because the change in the price of the products did not exceed the increased costs of the raw materials.
The latest price hike comes two months after TTL raised the price of kegs and bottles of Taiwan Beer products by 1 to 2 percent for large wholesalers and by 3 to 7 percent for small wholesalers.
Effective June 1, the price of a keg of beer rose by an average of NT$10 per liter and the price of a case of bottled beer (containing 12 600ml bottles) increased by an average of NT$36 to NT$60.

Vietnam, Japan & Singapore: Vietnamese craft beers conquering neighbouring countries

Fruity, spicy Vietnamese craft beers are making fans in other countries including Japan, bringing different tastes from a nation known for lagers, the Nikkei Asia reported on August 6.
Colorful cans from Vietnam's Pasteur Street Brewing stand out among the extensive offerings at Tasting Bar Shibataya in Tokyo.
"These are crisp and perfect for the hot and humid weather in Japan right now," said Daigo Honbu, a manager at the bar's operating company.
Pasteur Street Brewing, founded in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014 by a team including American brewers, is credited with igniting the craft beer boom in Vietnam. Its beers draw their rich flavors from local fruits, spices and coffee beans.
"They are not as bitter as typical craft beers, making them more drinkable," Honbu said. The bar sells over 30 cans of the beers on a good day, mostly to craft enthusiasts and to those who tried them during past trips to Vietnam, he said.
Parent Shibata-ya Holdings started importing Pasteur beers in May, and sells them to both retail customers and businesses.

UK: Unseasonably wet weather causing problems for this year’s wheat, barley harvests
|
The unseasonably wet weather is causing problems for this year’s harvest, experts have said, with wheat, barley and hay crops affected, The Guardian reported on August 7.
Many farmers have been signed up to a nature-friendly scheme called Mid Tier, which does not allow hay to be cut until July to help wildlife.
However, there have been very few dry days since 1 July, leaving farmers insufficient time to cut the grass, spread it out, allow it to dry, row it up and then bale it before it rains again.
Prof Nicola Cannon from the Royal Agricultural University said: “Even if the product is being harvested to be used for animals, it still needs to store well without going mouldy as this not only reduces the quality and desirability of the product but also can make it a fire risk.
“We all know the phrase ‘make hay while the sun shines’, and the reason for this is that, ideally, grass is cut for hay and dries quickly on a warm and breezy day. It is no different to drying your laundry on a washing line – the thicker and the wetter the clothes, and the stiller or duller the weather, the longer it takes
