USA: Craft beer exports total 230,999 barrels last year
|
The Brewers Association Export Development Program has assisted American craft breweries send their ales and lagers to nearly every beer market in the world, Forbes reported on August 8.
In 2022, 230,999 barrels (over 7 million gallons) of beer, worth over $71 million, was exported from America’s craft breweries, according to the Brewers Association. “The number of exporting American craft brewers has grown from just a handful of 10-15 companies 20 years ago, to more than 150 small and independent brewers shipping beer overseas annually,” says Steve Parr, director of international relations for the Brewers Association.
The Export Development Program is a collaboration between the Brewers Association and the Market Access Program of the Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. Beer, brewed from barley and other cereal crops, and from hops, is an agricultural food product. Through the EDP, the Brewers Association and the Department of Agriculture share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities that help build commercial export markets for American craft beer.
“Awareness of American craft beer has never been higher, and international beer markets offer a way to diversify sales, hedge domestic sales, and grow your business if done well,” says Parr.

USA: AB InBev to dispose of eight brands significantly cutting its craft beer portfolio
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) announced on August 7 that it will sell eight craft brands to Tilray Brands, significantly cutting AB InBev’s craft beer portfolio. Tilray, a Canadian cannabis company, will expand its growing craft holdings, which currently include SweetWater Brewing, Montauk Brewing, Green Flash, and Alpine Beer Co. The deal is expected to close in September, 2023.
The momentous deal will include Shock Top, Breckenridge Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Redhook Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Square Mile Cider Company, and Hiball Energy, which AB InBev discontinued in May of this year. The purchase price is equal to $85 million in cash, according to an 8-K filing by Tilray.
The transaction will include current employees, breweries, and associated brewpubs. In total, Tilray will acquire production facilities in Portland and Bend, Ore., Littleton, Colo., and Patchogue, N.Y., as well as eight new brewpubs across the country.
Although Tilray began as a cannabis-focused brand, the company’s CEO and chairman Irwan D. Simon is enthusiastic about the potential in the craft brewing industry. USA, WA: Larrabee Lager Co. launches in Bellingham
|
A new brewery opened Friday, Aug. 4 in the Cordata neighborhood. The first Bellingham brewery north of Interstate 5, Larrabee Lager Co. offers beer and pizza in a family-friendly beer hall, the Cascadia Daily News reported on August 7.
Founded by co-owners Sam and Kate Milne, Larrabee Lager Co. is more than a decade in the making. Sam started as a keg washer at Kulshan Brewing Company in 2013 before working his way up to head brewer. In 2018, he was awarded the Glen Falconer Brewing scholarship to study at Siebel Institute in Chicago and Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany.
Upon returning to Washington, he helped launch Brick West Brewing in Spokane — a brewery now known for its IPAs and German-style brews.
As its name implies, lager is the primary focus at Larrabee Lager Co. Everything else is secondary. Leading with lager makes sense in a beer market like Bellingham, where nearly every other brewery specializes in hoppy beer, particularly IPAs.

Muddy York Brewing is expanding to a second location in an historic building on Whitchurch-Stouffville's Main Street next spring, Newmarket Today reported on August 5.
“Since opening our taproom doors in 2016, our location in East York Toronto has catered to a lively array of families, friends and local community members that has made the space homey, warm and inclusive,” says Susan Michalek, co-owner of Muddy York, in a news release. “It became clear to us what our strengths were and in late 2021 we began searching for an ideal neighbourhood for Muddy York’s expansion. Not only did we want to offer a similar, uncompromising and friendly craft beer customer experience but we also were looking for a space that could integrate an exceptional food experience.”

USA, KS: Discourse Brewing set to open in Overland Park in late September

Former history teacher Matt Britton is making a seemingly dramatic career shift by opening a brewery in Overland Park, Yahoo News reported on August 5.
But he believes the two occupations have many parallels.
Since before the Revolutionary War, America’s pubs have functioned as public meeting spaces, Britton explained, hosting stimulating discussions about life, spirituality and democracy.
In fact, historians believe it was in public houses — or pubs — like Boston’s Green Dragon Tavern that Samuel Adams and other members of the Sons of Liberty plotted to undermine the British government.
Britton wanted to create an equally communal space to revive meaningful (though not necessarily political) discussions. Enter Discourse Brewing, set to open at 7211 W. 97th St. in the Windmill Square shopping center in late September.
“It’s just that dialogue,” Britton said. “I’m really trying to emulate a local place where you can meet your neighbors.”
Johnson County’s newest microbrewery will move into the former site of the Window Door & Trim store.
Though the concept was inspired by Britton’s love of history, it will have a modern look with repurposed metal railing and touches of gold. A fireplace will sit near a high bay window and lounge chairs for a “cozy” feel, Britton said.

USA, NY: Smugtown Brewing Co. plans cleared by Henrietta Planning Board
|
Plans for Henrietta’s first craft brewery have cleared their last major hurdle with the town, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on August 6.
On July 18, the Henrietta Planning Board voted unanimously to give final site plan approval to Smugtown Brewing Co., a five-barrel brewhouse and full-service restaurant that will operate in Town Center Plaza (formerly Suburban Plaza), 2199 East Henrietta Road.
The business will occupy a 7,847-square-foot space at the shopping center’s south end, next to an AutoZone store.
Co-owner and master brewer Jason Fox said he’s hoping to secure building permits within the next three weeks, after which construction can start.
As for an opening date, originally, he and business partner Joel Chiarenza, also the plaza owner, were hoping for fall.
But, “It will depend on the availability of subcontractors and materials,” said Fox, who has been a fixture on the local craft brewing scene for years and currently consults for Dansville’s Battle Street Brewery.
Architectural renderings presented at the July 18 Planning Board meeting offered the first glimpse of the envisioned exterior for Smugtown Brewing, which includes a covered patio that will wrap around the end-cap location and add square footage.

USA, IL: Fox Republic Brewing already open in Yorkville
|
Beer lovers will find a rich variety of hand-crafted ales and lagers on tap at Fox Republic Brewing in downtown Yorkville, the Shaw Local reported on August 5.
The new brewery and tap room opened recently at 101 W. Hydraulic Ave., where Ken McMullen of Naperville and Sam Walstaff of Aurora are producing a variety of beers designed to please every palate.
“This is a community brewery and everyone has different tastes,” said McMullen, the brewmaster.
There are 15 beers on tap at any one time, ranging from a light Kolsch golden ale to a creamy oatmeal stout, along with a flavored tequila seltzer and a cider.
“It’s about what people want,” said Walstaff, the head brewer.
Fox Republic occupies a large space inside the high-profile former industrial building on the west side of South Bridge Street (Route 47) between the Fox River and Hydraulic Avenue.
The brewery joins the Iconic Coffee Shop and Foxes Dean Meadery, which have already turned the downtown building into a destination for premium beverages.
With an indoor seating capacity of about 100, Fox Republic has plenty more space outside at the beer garden set up on the grassy area along Hydraulic Avenue.

USA, IL: Lo Rez Brewing closing this summer
|
A popular Pilsen brewery is closing this summer, the Block Club Chicago reported on August 7.
Lo Rez Brewing, 2101 S. Carpenter St., has become another “COVID casualty,” founder Dave Dahl said in an Instagram post. The brewery opened in the neighborhood in 2016.
“Our taproom and distribution revenue never rebounded from the pandemic,” Dahl wrote in the post. “Also during the pandemic Lo Rez took out loans to get through. But those new loan payments, and original loan payments, and the increasing costs on everything, have become too much for the business to bear.”
The last day of service is Sept. 3, Dahl said.
“Our income is down, our expenses are up, we’re too far out of whack,” he wrote. “Lo Rez is no longer financially viable.”
Lo Rez became a neighborhood favorite over the years by partnering with local groups like Pilsen Arts and Community Center, El Paseo Community Garden and Venados, and hosting events and block parties.
Dahl encouraged folks to come out to Lo Rez over the next few weeks to say goodbye and have a few final beers.

USA, TX: Cowtown Brewing Co. permanently closes its Southlake Town Square location

Cowtown Brewing Co. has permanently closed in Southlake Town Square after operating for nearly a year and a half, the Southlake Style reported on August 7.
Based in Fort Worth, Cowtown Brewing Co. is a taproom that produces its own award-winning craft beer and barbecue in a family-friendly atmosphere. With the same space previously housing The Wine Loft and The Gingerman as well, Southlake residents are eager to see who will be moving into 1512 E. Southlake Blvd., Suite 10 next.
While the Southlake pub is now closed, you can still enjoy its craft beer at 1301 E. Belknap St. in Fort Worth.

UK: Unseasonably wet weather causing problems for this year’s wheat, barley harvests

The unseasonably wet weather is causing problems for this year’s harvest, experts have said, with wheat, barley and hay crops affected, The Guardian reported on August 7.
Many farmers have been signed up to a nature-friendly scheme called Mid Tier, which does not allow hay to be cut until July to help wildlife.
However, there have been very few dry days since 1 July, leaving farmers insufficient time to cut the grass, spread it out, allow it to dry, row it up and then bale it before it rains again.
Prof Nicola Cannon from the Royal Agricultural University said: “Even if the product is being harvested to be used for animals, it still needs to store well without going mouldy as this not only reduces the quality and desirability of the product but also can make it a fire risk.
“We all know the phrase ‘make hay while the sun shines’, and the reason for this is that, ideally, grass is cut for hay and dries quickly on a warm and breezy day. Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria struggles with USD scarcity to pay foreign loans

Guinness Nigeria Plc, a unit of Diageo Plc, has revealed that it is struggling to obtain US Dollars to pay back foreign-currency loans in the country, the Business Post Nigeria reported on August 7.
This is despite the recent liberalisation of the foreign-exchange market by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as part of efforts to help to revive the Nigerian economy and boost FX supply.
Supply of the greenback is still limited relative to demand, and the rates have started widening, reaching more than N100 between the official rate and the black market rate.
As a result of this unavailability, Nigerian companies with significant Dollar debts have suffered significant currency-related losses.
It has not been easier for beer manufacturers, especially Nigerian Breweries, makers of Heineken, Star, and Maltina. The brewer is planning to upwardly review the prices of some of its Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) from Thursday, August 10, 2023.
On its part, the Diageo subsidiary, Guinness Nigeria Plc, declared a loss of N18.2 billion for 2023 compared to N15.7 billion profit in the previous year after its finance costs soared on the currency devaluation.

Luxembourg: Non-alcoholic beer becoming more popular in Luxembourg

Low in calories and safe for drivers - non-alcoholic beer is becoming more popular in Luxembourg these days, RTL Today reported on August 4.
One in two Germans now drink non-alcoholic beer "from time to time", and it appears the trend is taking off within Luxembourg's borders as well. Production and consumption is increasing by 20% every year.
Non-alcoholic beer has existed for decades, but its popularity has exploded in recent years as the product's reputation has evolved from an emergency solution to an enjoyable drink in itself.
François Lecronier, who is responsible for the drinks section in one of Luxembourg's big supermarkets, explains that "it is effectively a competitor for soft drinks, rather than beer itself. We certainly notice a difference in sales over the summer months."
Minimal production - less than 1% brewed in Luxembourg
The brewery in Wiltz has been producing non-alcoholic beer for 3 years, recently adding a Radler variant to the array of products on offer. However, production of non-alcoholic drinks still represents just 1% of the brewery's total production, despite an annual increase of 15-20%. Taiwan: Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp announces recommended retail price hike
|
Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp (TTL) said on August 8 that it has increased the recommended retail price of Taiwan Beer and its own-brand cigarettes due to rising raw material costs, the Taipei Times reported.
TTL said it had raised the recommended retail price of Taiwan Beer products — Gold Label, Classic and 18 Days Draft — by NT$5 (US$0.16) per bottle or can, effective from Tuesday last week.
In addition, the recommended retail price of TTL cigarettes has been raised by between NT$5 and NT$10 per pack, the state-owned company said.
The company said that it would not profit from the price hike because the change in the price of the products did not exceed the increased costs of the raw materials.
The latest price hike comes two months after TTL raised the price of kegs and bottles of Taiwan Beer products by 1 to 2 percent for large wholesalers and by 3 to 7 percent for small wholesalers.
Effective June 1, the price of a keg of beer rose by an average of NT$10 per liter and the price of a case of bottled beer (containing 12 600ml bottles) increased by an average of NT$36 to NT$60.

Fruity, spicy Vietnamese craft beers are making fans in other countries including Japan, bringing different tastes from a nation known for lagers, the Nikkei Asia reported on August 6.
Colorful cans from Vietnam's Pasteur Street Brewing stand out among the extensive offerings at Tasting Bar Shibataya in Tokyo.
"These are crisp and perfect for the hot and humid weather in Japan right now," said Daigo Honbu, a manager at the bar's operating company.
Pasteur Street Brewing, founded in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014 by a team including American brewers, is credited with igniting the craft beer boom in Vietnam. Its beers draw their rich flavors from local fruits, spices and coffee beans.
"They are not as bitter as typical craft beers, making them more drinkable," Honbu said. The bar sells over 30 cans of the beers on a good day, mostly to craft enthusiasts and to those who tried them during past trips to Vietnam, he said.
Parent Shibata-ya Holdings started importing Pasteur beers in May, and sells them to both retail customers and businesses.
"We are doing this on a trial basis and haven't decided on what to do in the future," a representative from the company said, but Shibata-ya will consider continuing imports
