USA: Midyear 2023 craft beer market shows 2% decline
|
The Brewers Association (BA), the trade organization representing small and independent American craft brewers, on August 10 released results from its midyear survey, shedding light on the state of the craft beer industry and indicating optimism for the second half of the year.
Midyear 2023 survey results are on par with 2022 annual trends, with the industry leveling out after years of growth followed by two years of a unique market due to COVID-19. Indicative of a maturing era for the craft beer industry, the survey reveals a low single-digit decline of -2% in the market. From a competitive distribution market and rising costs, to changing consumer preferences and supply chain disruptions, the craft brewing industry has radically grown and shifted over recent decades, with that change only accelerating in recent years.
In breaking down the distribution channels, according to Circana scan data, independent craft packaged sales were down -3% year-over-year (YoY) but have improved since the first quarter of 2023 when they were down -9%. Distributors and retailers have been reducing their focus on distributed craft and searching for growth in other pockets, but there are signs that the worst reductions may be in the past.
Reported at-the-brewery sales were healthier than

USA, AZ: Buqui Bichi Brewing set to open its second location in downtown Phoenix
|
Buqui Bichi recently opened its Chandler location in July and now it’s brewing up a new spot in the Valley. The Mexican award-winning brewery from Hermosillo, Sonora is set to open its second U.S. location in downtown Phoenix, The Business Journals reported on August 10.
“[It's] going to be opening September 15, right before Mexican Independence Day,” confirmed Kevin Gauthereau, manager of the Chandler location, to ABC15.
The new location is set to open near 1st Avenue and Van Buren in Phoenix.
The company from Sonora brews up culture, IPAs, dishes and “freedom.” If you’re asking yourself how so? Well according to Gauthereau, it starts with meaning behind the name of the business. “A lot of it is just liberty, just freedom for someone to be able to express themselves in their [own] way – you know- without being judged or criticized around that,” he said.
The first AZ ‘Buqui Bichi’ location: 325 S Arizona Ave in Chandler.

USA, WI: Minocqua Brewing Company can continue to operate
|
The Oneida County Planning and Development Committee agreed on August 9 to extend the time period for Minocqua Brewing Company and owner Kirk Bangstad to revise their conditional use permit. Bangstad also filed an appeal to the revocation of his administrative review permit, allowing the brewery to remain open, WSAW reported.
Last week, the same committee revoked Minocqua Brewing Company’s administrative review permit, forcing the brewery to stop doing business.
During the meeting on August 9, the committee voted to withdraw the motion to deny Minocqua Brewing Company’s conditional use permit or CUP. Instead, they agreed to allow the brewery more time to revise its plans, allowing them 180 days to get approval on the existing CUP. In a video on Facebook, Bangstad explained they will revise their permit to do business and work on ways to add parking and a beer garden.
Bangstad has been at odds with the county and the town of Minocqua for quite some time. Bangstad has said they don’t like him because of his progressive political beliefs.

USA, IA: Field Day Brewing Company already open in North Liberty
|
Provisions at North Liberty’s first brewery, opened Aug. 1, ensure diners can eat, drink and be merry with an unusual distinction of beers, elevated eats and a sprawling campus with activities for adults and kids alike.
In short, Field Day Brewing Company has designed its 20,000-square-foot building to be true to its name — a place to step out of your normal routine for a good time.
“We are native Iowans, we’re proud of this state, this is where we want to be. So it’s a play on cornfields, soybean fields, the agricultural aspect,” said Joe Selix, partner in the new brewery’s owner, Craft Concepts Restaurant Group. “We’ve also got a wide array of things to do. It’s the nostalgic field day from back in your childhood.”
While Field Day is the first and only brewery in North Liberty, the owners wanted it to also be the best one. With more than half the building’s space dedicated to an array of niche and mainstream beer types, Field Day is well on its way.
The four-vessel, 15-barrel system seen there today dwarfs the original plans for a five to seven barrel system — until the founders realized it just wasn’t enough for their 6,000 square

USA, PA: Arboretum Trail Brewing closing the doors of its Pittsburght brewery
|
After just two years in business, Arboretum Trail Brewing is closing its doors at 1351 Washington Boulevard in Pittsburgh. The brewery, which opened in the Summer of 2021, recently announced the closure on social media, Breweries in PA reported on August 10.
This marks the second brewery to close in this location in the last two years. Couch Brewing closed its doors in the same space on Washington Boulevard in November of 2021. The history of the location was something Arboretum Trail regularly moaned about online. Even going as far as releasing a beer named “It’s A Tough Location”. The beer was first announced in June of 2023 with the brewery saying the following about the inspiration behind the release:
“It’s no secret we picked a tough location for the first taproom for Arbo. It’s been a struggle and if I am being completely honest, we need everyone’s support this week so we can keep this train rolling.”
Now it would appear that the train has come to a stop at the Washington Boulevard location. Despite the closure, Arboretum Trail shared that they plan to continue to brew its beer for distribution only, although no plans of where and when this will happen

USA, PA: Mastic Trail Brewing announces last day of business on September 2
|
Pittsburgh’s first (and only) Caribbean themed craft brewery is set to close its doors. In a post on social media, Mastic Trail Brewing announced their last day of business is set for Saturday, September 2nd, Breweries in PA reported on August 10.
The Caribbean themed brewpub opened in July 2020, in the Glenshaw neighborhood of Pittsburgh. They opened in a 7,000 sq/ft building and brewing on a 10 BBL brewhouse. The brewpub was known for offering a Caribbean-inspired menu, with items such as jerk chicken and bacalao fritters.
To give customers the true beach feeling, Mastic Trail has a clear epoxy floor with sand underneath, as well as some ocean floors in another room with waves and coral reefs. Their main bar has sand and seashells, while the back of the building looks like a dock.
In mid-2022 the brewery would temporarily close for several months citing a myriad of post-Covid issues. However, seemed to rebound in late 2022 when they announced their re-opening.
As the post says, the final day of business for the brewery will be Saturday, September 2nd, with regular hours leading up to the day.

USA, CA: Harmonic Brewing to close its original location and production facility
|
After almost eight years, Harmonic Brewing announced it will close its original location and production facility in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood at the end of October, CBS News reported on August 10.
"Maybe 10 batches left in this facility," said Harmonic brewmaster and co-founder Eddie Gobbo.
Gobbo says they wanted to stay in business here but they couldn't come to an agreement for a new lease with the property owner.
"It's a labor-intensive, expensive business to run," he said.
Gobbo says operational costs have increased, "rents have stayed the same" and revenue has declined in recent years.
"People have moved out, spending habits have changed, people are at home a lot more, working from home, they're not meeting colleagues out. So, for businesses like us that rely on in-person and full taprooms, we've seen a big hit in revenue. During those times, costs have gone up, rents have stayed the same."
Harmonic's decision comes on the heels of Anchor Brewing's closure as well as other, smaller breweries.
"Our friends Local Brewing and Ferment, Drink, and Repeat," Gobbo said.
As San Francisco loses another brewery, many local restaurants are losing options for pop-ups at breweries, which have served as lifelines for businesses during and after the pandemic.

France: Barley harvest makes little progress as northern France experiences more wet weather
|
French farmers made little progress harvesting wheat and barley last week as northern regions experienced more wet and cool weather, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on August 11.
Farmers had gathered 89% of this year's soft wheat crop by Aug. 7, compared with 87% a week earlier, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.
The harvest was lagging both the rapid pace last year, when field work was already complete by the same week, and the average 94% for the same week over the past five years, it said.
After a brisk start to the summer, field work has been held up by heavy rain since late July, raising concern over the milling quality of wheat still to be harvested.
FranceAgriMer this week said that wheat in the northwest was expected to suffer some quality loss, though readings were satisfactory in earlier-harvested crop.
However, drier and warmer conditions from the middle of this week are expected to allow farmers to complete harvesting.
The spring barley harvest hardly advanced last week, with 96% of the crop cut by Aug. 7 against 95% a week earlier.
Farmers completed winter barley and durum wheat harvesting last month.
The wet, mild weather has helped maize, which is harvested later in the year.

Australia: Malting barley exports drop by 25% in June this year
|
Australia exported 418,075t of feed barley, 47,807t of malting barley and 395,370t of sorghum in June, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Grain Central reported on August 10.
On feed, the June figure was down 22 percent from the May total of 534,560t, and Saudi Arabia on 184,000t, Japan on 155,090t and Thailand on 32,571t were the three biggest markets.
The malting figure represents a drop of 25pc from the May total of 63,725t, and Mexico on 33,000t, South Korea on 9000t, and Singapore on 2527t were the major markets for June shipments.
On sorghum, volume has dropped 10pc from the May peak of 440,921t.
China on 275,462t accounted for 70pc of June shipments, with 60,000t to Kenya and 30,000t to Sudan the second and third-biggest markets.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said the feed barley shipment figure for June shows a continued drift lower in volume to the lowest level seen since January.
Barley exports continued to drift lower for June, with feed barley volume the lightest since January 2023 and malting the lowest since February.
“That was back when everyone thought there was no malt quality around,” Mr Roache said.
“The story of the slow slowdown on exports is

Australia & China: Australia’s two largest barley producers cleared to export to China
|
CBH Group and Emerald Grain, Australia’s two largest barley producers, have been given approval by the Chinese government to resume barley shipments to China, according to the Australian Associated Press.
Australia’s agriculture minister, Murry Watt, confirmed on Aug. 9 that both would be reinstated as registered exporters. The two agribusiness companies were not on the customs list when China announced on Aug. 4 that its three-year 80% duty on barley exports from Australia had been lifted.
Nearly 130 Australian exporters are now registered to export barley to China, the Australian Associated Press reported.
“We welcome this positive news and look forward to working with our customers to return to exporting Western Australian barley to China, a longstanding market,” CBH told the Australian Associated Press through a spokesperson.
China blocked CBH grain imports in September 2020 after it claimed customs found pests in a shipment of barley.
The 80% duty had been in place since June 2020. China said the tariff was due to Australia “dumping” barley, meaning its exports were priced lower than China’s domestic supply. However, Australia’s hardline stance on China’s role regarding the origins of the global COVID-19 pandemic was also reportedly a factor.
Prior to the tariff being imposed, Australia was by

Ukraine: Analysts increase barley, corn, wheat crop forecasts on stronger than expected yields
|
SovEcon analysts have increased its Ukraine grain production forecasts for corn (up 2 mln tonnes to 25.9 mln), wheat (up 1.3 mln tonnes to 19.2 mln) and barley (up 400,000 tonnes to 4.8 mln) due to stronger-than-expected yields for wheat and barley, along with favorable weather for corn development, AgWeb reported on August 10.
The Black Sea consulting firm raised its 2023-24 Ukrainian corn export forecast by 1 mln tonnes to 19 mln amid the bigger crop estimate. SovEcon also noted: “As the main buyer of Ukrainian grain, the EU could prioritize buying corn over other grains.”
It left the 2023-24 wheat and barley export forecasts at 10 mln tonnes and 1.3 mln tonnes, respectively, “as shipments may be limited by infrastructure bottlenecks and recent attacks on the Danube ports.” SovEcon said it believes Danube ports could ship up to 2 mln to 2.5 mln tonnes of Ukrainian grains per month.
