USA: Beer remains Americans’ alcoholic beverage of choice
|
Beer remains American drinkers' alcoholic beverage of choice, a recent Gallup Poll shows.
Thirty seven percent of drinkers say they drink beer most often, while 31 percent prefer liquor and 29 percent favor wine.
Although it continues to hold on to the top spot, beer is less dominant now than at points in the 1990s and early 2000s, when close to half said it was their preferred alcoholic beverage.
The 31 percent of drinkers who currently say liquor is their favorite alcoholic drink is the highest on record.
Drinkers' alcoholic beverage of choice varies based on their gender, age, education and income level, according to the poll.
Men are more than twice as likely as women to say they drink beer most often, and women are about three times as likely as men to say wine is their most common beverage.
Younger drinkers prefer beer and liquor, while older drinkers favor beer and wine.
Sixty two percent of U.S. adults drink alcohol while the rest abstain completely, the poll, tracking Americans' drinking habits, has found.
Americans' drinking habits are relatively steady, with more than three in five saying they consume alcohol and about one in five drinkers admitting to overindulging sometimes, say Gallup's July 3-27 Consumption Habits poll.

USA: Bud Light’s sales still pressured as controversy around it continues to brew
|
Bud Light's sales are still pressured as the seemingly never-ending controversy surrounding the beer brand continues to brew, Yahoo Finance reported on August 15.
Anheuser-Busch InBev's Bud Light sales tanked 26.5% for the week ending August 5, per new Nielsen data. That's a faster pace than the week-on-week drop of 25.9% for the period ending June 17.
Bud Light volumes crashed 29.7%, accelerating from the week earlier's plunge of 29.3%.
"Recent data continues to show that tracked channels reached a point of stabilization at significantly lower levels for Anheuser-Busch InBev than pre-controversy," Evercore ISI analyst Robert Ottenstein wrote in a note.
The declines started after transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney created an Instagram post during the March Madness basketball tournament endorsing the light beer.
Following the post on April 1, AB InBev saw Bud Light sales trend lower through April. The declines appeared to accelerate following an April 3 video from country musician Kid Rock, which spurred a wider boycott by many on the right.

USA, OR: Oregon’s hop harvest to score worse than US overall
|
The annual hop harvest has begun in the pacific northwest, but the 2023 crop is expected to decline as craft beer sales soften, the New School Beer reported on August 14.
Before the craft beer boom, much of the local farms relied on international and macro brewers but with the rise of microbreweries and the craft beer boom many innovations happened, including exciting new hop varieties, but the downside has been the reliance on the health of this smaller portion of the industry.
“As the beer industry goes, so does the hop industry,” said Ben Edmunds, owner of Breakside Brewery and President of the Oregon Brewers Guild. “We’re the two sides of the same coin.”
According to U.S. Department of Agriculture, hop acreage has decreased nationally by 8% from 2022, but the numbers are worse for Oregon hop growers, who are down 11% compared to last year. Oregon is the third largest hop producing state with nearly 7,000 acres, only behind Washington and Idaho.

USA, CT: Dudleytown Brewing Co. opens its doors in Windsor

Dudleytown Brewing Co. opened its doors in Windsor with a grand opening celebration on Aug. 12, debuting its new space on Day Hill Road after nearly 18 months of construction, CT Insider reported on August 14.
Legend has it that Dudleytown, in the northwest corner of the state near Cornwall, was founded by the relatives of a man who was beheaded in England and was cursed because of it. The deeply forested hamlet, the story goes, eventually became a ghost town.
The founders of the town's namesake brewery have embraced that vibe with lots of wood, including a massive wooden bar top, mood lighting and an industrial accent highlighted by a knotty, sculpted metal tree at the entrance.
"The theme is a dark forest," co-founder Daryle Dunlap told Hearst Connecticut in July. "There's a lot of folklore behind it."

USA, MS: New owners have big plans for Lazy Magnolia Brewing
|
The new owners of Lazy Magnolia Brewing, the first packaging brewery in Mississippi since Prohibition, have big plans for the beer maker and already have put millions into expanding the plant to increase production, The Clarion-Ledger reported on August 13.
Utah-based investors Ryan Bowen and Jason Anderson bought Lazy Magnolia earlier this year for an undisclosed amount from founders Mark and Leslie Henderson.
Bowen owns or has investments in more than 40 companies, according to his social media posts. He founded Pure Water Solutions which he sold last year for an undisclosed amount.
“We’re keeping the team from the oldest to the newest, and the Lazy Magnolia name is not going anywhere,” said Christopher Maros, the new general manager. “We’re looking forward to launching new products and diversification of our portfolio.”
The Hendersons turned their home-brewing hobby into a business in Kiln, a historic community in Hancock County known as the Moonshine Capital of the World for its “high quality and ready availability of this whiskey,” according to the local Historical Society.

USA, NC: Catawba Brewing Co. permanently closes its Belmont, Charlotte location
|
One of Charlotte’s breweries has officially closed its doors, AOL.com reported on August 14.
Catawba Brewing Co. has permanently closed its Charlotte location in the Belmont neighborhood.
“Thank you for the years of support. You are the best part of us. Thank you for entrusting us with your first dates, wedding receptions, first birthdays, friend get-togethers, and more,” a sign placed on the brewery on Monday, August 14 says. “We love you all and will miss you dearly.”
The notice was signed “Your Charlotte Catawba Staff.”
Yet, MaryAnn Anstine, general manager, told CharlotteFive that employees were notified of the closure Monday morning without notice and without reason.
CharlotteFive has reached out to the ownership group for more information, but has not heard back.
The Charlotte brewery, which opened in 2017, was one of four of the company’s locations across the Carolinas with craft beer, food trucks, bingo, trivia and other weekly events.
“We’ll bring a little of what you know from us in the mountains, which tends to focus on the outdoors, to Charlotte,” former co-founder Billy Pyatt, told CharlotteFive ahead of its opening. “Only here, we’ll tie in our new outdoors with views of the city from our taproom and patio.”

USA, IL: Oswego Brewing Co. to serve its last brews on September 2

COVID-19 has claimed another business: Oswego Brewing Co. The beloved downtown establishment will serve brews for the last time Sept. 2, management announced Friday, August 11, The Patch reported.
In a message to its community on Facebook, management said the statewide shutdowns during 2020 and 2021 "severely damaged our income model." Their taproom attendance "never returned to pre-COVID numbers," and the distribution revenue didn't rebound to numbers seen before March 2020.
"To keep our doors open in 2020, we took out loans to get through, but those new loan payments, the original loan payments, the increasing cost of materials & labor, and a weak economy have become too much for us to sustain operations," the letter reads.
When the brewery, located on Main near Oswego Cyclery, opened in May 2018, village officials told Patch the site was a unique use for a property with a peculiar history.

Tuckahoe Brewing Co. on English Creek Avenue in EHT is shutting down after 12 years in business, 97.3 ESPN reported on August 11.
In a notification obtained from a Tuckahoe Mug Club Member, the brewery explains why they're ending their venture.
The explanation is simple. Businesses like this are a labor of love, and the owners simply want to spend more time with their families.

USA, MA: Turtle Swamp Brewing to close its doors on August 19
|
A somber day is approaching for those who like to enjoy a beer in Jamaica Plain at Turtle Swamp Brewing as it will close its doors on August 19, or when the beer runs out, according to the business’s website, the Jamaica Plan Gazette reported on August 12.
Turtle Swamp Brewing was Co-Founded by John Lincecum, a veteran in the field of biotechnology, and Nik Walther, who has been a professional brewer since 2008 and has been making and serving brews at the site of its taproom and production brewery on Washington Street in Jamaica Plain since 2017.
However, after six years in the community, Lincecum cited the density of “the critical construction products” in the area that he said “have to be built” as a contributing factor to the closure. “The world moved on, and it’s time for us to move on too.”
Although Lincecum talked about construction on Washington Street, indicating how it made it difficult for patrons to come out to the brewery, he said, “We have to do this as a society, and you know, do we need this more than we need a brewery? Yeah, we do.”

South Korea: Barley imports reach record volume in first nine months of 2022/23
|
Through the first 9 months of 2022/23, South Korea shattered previous records for marketing year (MY) barley imports. The nation imported 86,000 tonnes of barley through June, breaking the 2021/22 record of more than 74,000 tonnes for the full 12 months, USDA said in their August report.
The surge in imports can be attributed to an expansion of a tariff-rate quota (TRQ) for barley. The
expansion was implemented because of concerns of short supplies of wheat and corn at the outset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Australia, South Korea’s largest supplier, also has large exportable supplies this year. The TRQ’s expansion from 40,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes in 2022 has facilitated greater barley imports as a feed substitute. In 2023, the TRQ is set at 100,000 tonnes.
South Korea imports of barley have benefitted from more competitive prices. Unhulled barley for feed in South Korea, primarily for cattle and horses, is substitutable with wheat and corn. FOB barley bids from Australia have trended down over the past year, dropping from $342 on August 1, 2022 to $234 on August 1, 2023. Thailand: Excise Department proposes to adjust structure of alcohol and beer taxes
|
Thailand’s Excise Department is currently in discussions with relevant government and private sector agencies on proposals to adjust the structure of alcohol and beer taxes to align with the current situation and to be consistent with the development of alcoholic beverage products, The Star reported on August 14.
Currently, alcoholic beverages are subject to various tax rates, such as non-alcoholic beer with 0% alcohol content, according to Ekniti Nitithanprapas, director general of the Excise Department.
The study to adjust the structure of alcohol and beer taxes is not aimed at increasing taxes per se, but rather to categorise product types more clearly and accurately for proper taxation.
For example, beer with 0% alcohol content might see a change in tax rate if it is reclassified as beer, which could potentially result in a reduced tax rate compared to its current classification as a general beverage.
A consensus needs to be reached by all parties, including the Ministry of Public Health, for appropriate future tax collection, Ekniti explained.

Ireland: Diageo announces new price hike in Ireland
|
The price of a pint goes up again from Monday, August 14 with a 4 cent price hike, breakingnews.ie reported.
Diageo is increasing the cost of its stout and beer products by 4 cent, after a hike of 12 cent back in February.
The maker of Guinness is increasing prices by an average of 10 to 15 cent.
It will affect drinks like Guinness, Smithwick’s, Rockshore, Harp, Hop House 13 and Carlsberg.
Business costs are being cited as the reason for the increase, but the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland has said the price rise is "poorly timed and deeply unfair to both consumers and publicans".
Independent TD for Kerry Michael Healy-Rae said some pubs in rural villages are already struggling to stay in business.
Mr Healy-Rae told Newstalk: "Rural pubs are finding it difficult enough to keep their doors open and keep customers coming into them. I think the timing by the drinks companies is wrong, I don't agree with it, the publicans themselves don't agree with it.
"So to keep customers going I think we should be doing everything we can to keep the price of alcohol down, and this is bad timing by the drinks companies to increase the cost of drink."

Australia: Asahi partners with Riordan Grain Services in support of Australian barley growers
|
Asahi Beverages and Riordan Grain Services are partnering in support of Australian barley growers for long-term end-to-end supply chain sustainability, the Grain Central reported on August 15.
The initiative will see Asahi working closely with Riordan and its grower customers to add value and collaborate on immediate needs and future-focused developments.
The partnership means Asahi, as owners of Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), and Riordan will work with growers to secure supply of the best barley, manage logistics for the malting process and deliver malt to Asahi to brew CUB’s beers.
“Barley malt is the heart and soul of our beer and defines its taste, aroma, colour and foam,” Asahi Beverages group general manager of direct procurement Dave Baxter said.
“It’s fantastic Victorians can enjoy a fresh Carlton Draught, Victoria Bitter or any beer brewed at our Abbotsford brewery knowing they’re directly supporting local Australian farmers.
“Importantly, this partnership allows us to continue to track barley back to the field where it was grown and to have direct relationships with farmers, which form part of a new model of barley procurement that Asahi implemented nearly three years ago.”

Thibaut Boidin will be appointed as the new Managing Director of HEINEKEN Romania starting with September 1st, 2023. The Diplomat Bucharest reported on August 14.
Dan Robinson joined Heineken N.V. in 2005 and was appointed as the Managing Director of HEINEKEN Romania in October 2018. During his mandate, the company has made significant progress in the areas of sustainability, innovation, and digitalization. He held two mandates as the President of the Romanian Brewers Association, working to support and consolidate the durable development of the beer industry in Romania.
Thibaut Boidin joined HEINEKEN France in 2017, where he was the Deputy General Manager at France Boissons. In this role, he led an ambitious transformation effort for HEINEKEN France and drove the growth of the business, whilst operating and improving the level of customer satisfaction.
