Brewery news USA: Bud Light officially dethroned by Modelo Especial as Amerca’s best-selling beer
Modelo Especial is now officially America’s best-selling beer, dethroning Bud Light, whose popularity faded following the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, CNN reported on August 22. Sales of Modelo at grocery and beer stores have surpassed Bud Light’s over the course of 2023, according to newly released NIQ data, the first time Modelo has ever beaten Bud Light on a year-to-date basis. There’s a tight race to the top, with Modelo landing in first place, gaining 8.34% share of dollars spent on beer vs. 8.28% for Bud Light through August 12. It’s a significant move for Modelo since Bud Light has held the position of America’s top-selling beer for the large part of the past two decades. Summer has been a bright spot for the Mexican lager, with Modelo surpassing Bud Light in May, June and July monthly sales. Modelo has held a 9.1 share for the past four weeks as Bud Light slipped to a 7 share of off-premise beer sales. Modelo’s move to the top “seemed inevitable for at least the last several months, but the timeline accelerated since Bud Light’s trends dramatically worsened in April,” Benj Steinman is the president of Beer Marketer’s Insights, told CNN. “And it happened ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Modelo Especial’s rise to top of US beer market did not happen overnight – Constellation Brands
Modelo Especial’s U.S. owner and distributor wants to emphasize that the brand’s rise to the top of the country’s beer market didn’t happen overnight, CNBC reported on August 18.

“The fact that we became the No. 1 beer in America due to a competitor’s moves is not accurate,” said Jim Sabia, executive vice president and managing director of Constellation Brands’ beer division.

“We’ve planned on becoming the No. 1 beer in America over the next couple of years; it just happened quicker than we anticipated,” he said.

Sabia said the company estimated that Modelo Especial would be the No. 1 beer in the U.S. by 2025. Bud Light’s sales slump changed that.

Modelo Especial took over’s Bud Light’s top spot in the U.S. beer market in May and has held onto the title ever since, according to Nielsen IQ data analyzed by the investment firm Wedbush Securities. The data shows that on the four weeks ended on May 20, Modelo’s share of total beer sales grew to 10.7%, while Bud Light’s fell to 9.6%.

Analysts say Modelo’s rise was accelerated by conservative backlash against Bud Light and its parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, after it partnered with transgender activist and influencer Dylan Mulvaney the month ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Heights Brewery coming to downtown Farmington
Downtown Farmington's newest brewery is on track to open late next month, the Detroit Free Press reported on August 18.

Heights Brewery, founded by Farmington residents and longtime home brewers Ryan Kavanagh and Shawn MacDonnell, will open at the former Page's Food and Spirits location, 23621 Farmington Road, starting with a soft opening in late September.

The 3,500-square-foot space, designed by Birmingham-based DesignTeam Plus, hopes to provide an "inviting, open and timeless vibe" for customers, with a redesigned front facade, a sizable, garage-style door, accordion-style windows and outdoor seating.

"We wanted to connect the exterior with the interior, and I think we succeeded in doing that," Kavanagh said in a news release.

Kavanagh and MacDonnell have been working to build and open the brewery since last year, working with Farmington's planning commission and downtown development authority as the city revamped its streetscape. The DDA awarded a grant to Kavanagh and MacDonnell to redesign the dated 1970s-style facade, and demolition began in the spring.

Kavanagh brings brewing experience from several southeast Michigan breweries, including Draught Horse in New Hudson and Dragonmead and Kuhnhenn in Warren.

Heights plans to serve a "full array" of beers, including IPAs, porters, stouts, lagers and some specialties, as well as wine, meads, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Commonwealth Brewing Company to launch new brewery in Fairfax during Labor Day weekend
Something new is brewing in Old Town Fairfax, FFXNow reported on August 18.

Expanding operations from Virginia Beach, Commonwealth Brewing Company is gearing up to join the neighborhood with an anticipated Labor Day weekend opening at 10426 Main Street.

In honor of its opening, which will ideally come on Sept. 1, the brewery will offer a “pie and a pint” special associated with its participation in Fairfax City’s upcoming Restaurant Week. Customers can choose from one of Commonwealth’s eight signature pizzas and a draft beer for $25.

Fairfax visitors can expect “an even bigger implementation” of Commonwealth’s offerings in Virginia Beach (2444 Pleasure House Road), where the brewery serves 25 to 28 styles of beer crafted in house, owner Jeramy Biggie says.

The new Fairfax location will boast a 4,800 square-foot tap room with 48 taps, five of which will be dedicated to draft cocktails that are currently exclusive to Fairfax. It will also eventually add the coffee brand that Commonwealth recently launched in Virginia Beach.

“It’s a great, great spot right on Main Street, and it has a pretty expansive patio with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome,” Biggie told FFXnow. “I’m just really excited to see how people can respond to the beer.”

Brewery news USA, CA: Steel Bonnet Brewing Company opens brand-new production facility in Salinas
Steel Bonnet Brewing Company has announced the opening of a brand-new production brewery in Salinas, representing a significant increase in production capacity over their current brewery in Scotts Valley and providing the opportunity for significant expansion of growth both at the tap room and in distribution, the Press Banner reported on August 18.

Several years ago, due to the growing popularity of their Scotts Valley taproom, Steel Bonnet owners Sue and Donald Cramb decided to expand production.

“We talked about expanding our current location in Scotts Valley, but due to some restrictions, we had to consider other locations, initially in Santa Cruz and Watsonville,” explains Donald Cramb. “However, we quickly realized that the availability of space was very limited. We then started to look further afield and eventually found a pretty ideal location in Salinas.”

So the Crambs signed a lease for a brand-new space on Work Street in Salinas in 2019.

Then, Covid hit. Two years of pandemic restrictions inhibiting development, followed by a shortage of architects, engineers and contractors.

“We had to stop all plans to move forward on this front,” Donald Cramb recalls. “But thanks to all of the support from our community who gave us the confidence to keep this ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Two craft breweries coming to Augusta next year
Augusta’s craft brewery count at the moment is zero.

But by this time next year, the small town with a quaint but up-and-coming downtown area will be home to two craft breweries operating on the same street, the Wichita Eagle reported on August 22.

The first one slated to open will be co-owned by Shane Scott, best known for his Sugar Shane’s Cafe at 430 State St. Scott is partnering with the owners of Walnut River Brewing Company in El Dorado and Pour House in Wichita and with Augusta businessman and craft beer aficionado Jeff Brown.

That brewery will operate at 418 State St. in Augusta and will be called Red Bud Brewery. The two-story brick building it will take over is directly on the other side of Sugar Shane’s patio and will share its usage.

Walnut River’s brewers will make new beers specifically for Red Bud, Scott said. The owners hope to have it open by the first quarter of 2024.

Then, by summer of 2024, craft brewer Adam Kraft and his wife, Julie, plan to open their own brewery just two doors down from Red Bud — in the one-story historic building at 414 State Street. The Krafts will call their ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Mannkind Brewing to host its grand opening in Leland on August 25
Following Brunswick Beer and Cider in late 2022, and the opening of Leland Brewing early this summer, a third brewery is set to join this booming town by the end of the month. Jeremy and Cassie Mann have been planning the brewery for years and working on the space at Ploof Road Business Park in Leland for months, the Star News Online reported on August 23. Now, they’re hosting an official grand opening for Mannkind Brewing beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at 9600 Ploof Road. “I think we have some things that set us apart,” Jeremy Mann said. “And I hope more breweries open here, too. I think it makes Leland more of a beer destination.” Mannkind’s first beer is Alpha, as in beginning. It’s a pale ale and will join the One Giant Leap, a double IPA, and the Ren (for Rennaissance) Amber for the opening. Also look for guest beers from local breweries, including the others in Leland. “They have been very supportive of us,” Jeremy Mann said. “And we want to support them, too.” Head brewer Alexis Scrivani also has a lager in the works as well as a German style beer for ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Curious Creatures Beer Corp. announces release of its first beer in Port Coquitlam
A new brewing company that “exists to help people to dive into a world of flavour” has announced the release of its first beer in Port Coquitlam, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 18.

Curious Creatures Beer Corp. has been founded by brewer and operations manager Sebastian Peterson, illustrator and brand manager Tatiana Peterson, and designer and marketing manager Brigitta Angelica, and is currently producing its beer at Boardwalk Brewing.

The debut beer from Curious Creatures is Monch New Zealand Pale Ale (4.5% abv):

Monch is designed to highlight the unique flavour and terroir of New Zealand Grown hops. It has notes of gooseberry, grapefruit, and passionfruit. The aromatics are that of a crazy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but with an absolute truckload of other fruit. The beer is dry with a delicate bitterness and ultimately, it’s incredibly sessionable.

Monch is launching today (August 18th) at the Boardwalk taproom, where Curious Creatures merchandise will also be available.

Brewery news USA, CA: New Helvetia Brewing Company facing prospects of eviction and closure
Though the federal COVID-19 emergency declaration ended in May, one Sacramento brewery is reminding customers that the impacts of the pandemic continue to rock the food and beverage industry. According to the Sacramento Bee, New Helvetia Brewing Company says it’s facing the “very real prospect of eviction and closure” due to the lingering impacts of the pandemic. The brewery took to Instagram to make the announcement, writing that the business has fallen behind on rent payments in part because of “the escalating costs and diminishing revenues in the aftermath of the pandemic.” The brewery is now serving food alongside its lineup of beers and urges customers to come in for a pint and a bite.
