Brewery news USA, AL: Blessed Kettle Brewing Company coming to downtown Foley
Beer brewing started as a college hobby for Tim Lipe after receiving a home brewing kit for Christmas. His hobby has evolved as he has from college consumption to brewing for his wedding and now in his home garage for family and friends, the Gulf Coast Media reported on August 24.

But his dream has grown, and soon Lipe and his wife, Alexa, will open Blessed Kettle Brewing Company in downtown Foley.

"I got into craft beer in 2010," Tim Lipe said. "I started home brewing in college, and she used to help some. That is where the love and passion for brewing came from."

The 1-gallon home brewing kit has grown into a one-barrel system with two fermenters in the Lipe home garage. Needless to say, they are popular in the neighborhood.

Tim and Alexa met in college while in physical therapy school, and Tim has said he would not have stuck it out in college if he hadn't met Alexa.

"It is something he has always wanted to do. He has told me multiple times if I was not in school with him, he would have quit," Alexa said. "It was just not where his heart is. I love it (physical therapy), and ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley, wheat prices steady during week to August 24
Prices for feed barley and wheat didn’t change much for the most part during the week ended on August 24, according to Erin Harakal of Agfinity at Stony Plain, Alberta, Grainews reported. “This week it has been pretty steady compared to the end of last week,” Harakal said, noting barley prices dropped about C$20 per tonne. “Just as we get close to harvest, there’s just some harvest pressure,” she added about the declines, stating that old- and new-crop prices “were kind of colliding.” Harakal said feed barley delivered was C$350-C$360 per tonne going into feedlot alley at Lethbridge. Feed wheat delivered to the same location was going for C$360-C$370/tonne. However, she noted wheat prices were more localized and point to the Edmonton area where they garnered C$330-C$350/tonne picked up. Another major factor keeping feed prices down has been the volume of corn imported from the U.S. Corn being less expensive has created a cap on barley prices, Harakal said. Feed barley was steady to lower during the week, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire, with prices in Saskatchewan losing 40 cents per bushel at C$6.25-C$6.60 per bushel delivered for old crop as of Wednesday. New-crop prices were at C$6.25-C$6.80/bu. In Manitoba, ...More info on site

Hops news USA, MI: Michigan’s hop growers predicting robust harvest this year
Michigan's hop growers are predicting a robust harvest - good news for this small but growing segment of the state's agriculture industry, the Rural Innovation Exchange reported on August 24. With more than 500 acres dedicated to hop cultivation, Michigan is the fourth-largest hop-producing state in the nation, trailing only Washington, Idaho, and Oregon, Michigan stands unrivaled in the Great Lakes region. Hop farmers are a small part of the state's important craft beer scene, with many growers selling to local brewers. The Michigan Brewers Guild celebrates the state's brewing prowess as a thriving powerhouse. With contributions of more than $144 million in wages and a staggering economic impact of more than $600 million, Michigan's breweries, microbreweries, and brewpubs have earned the state the rank of number six in the nation. Beyond the numbers, what truly sets Michigan apart is a passion for local ingredients and a commitment to quality. Though there are numbers few, Michigan hop growers are especially passionate about their efforts and what their products mean for the state's craft beer scene. “There's something special about having a beer that's 100 percent Michigan-grown. With the growth of the malting industry in Michigan, there's now enough ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, DE: Dog Pirate Brewing Company starts brewing outside Lewes
Eight years after opening Beach Time Distilling on Nassau Road outside Lewes, owner Greg Christmas is adding beer into the mix, the Cape Gazette reported on August 23. After more than a year working to secure state and federal approvals, Christmas recently started brewing beer under the name Dog Pirate Brewing Company. The first two brews – a chocolate porter and a session IPA – are now available at the tasting room, with several styles to be released in the coming weeks and months. Before opening Beach Time Distilling in 2015, Christmas worked for seven years as a plant engineer at Dogfish Head. Christmas said he had considered opening his own brewery before landing on a distillery, deciding to bet on something he was more comfortable making at that time. In the years since, he’s honed his brewing skills, which he’s been doing at home since the 1980s. Inside the barn-like building at the corner of Nassau and New roads, Christmas has his brewing equipment sequestered in the back of the building away from the distillery, which is required by law. In the tank now is a hazy IPA. While it’s not his personal beer of choice, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Heartwork Brewing to open in Bloomington later this year
Jeff Browne, who was born and raised in the Bloomington area, has been talking with his friends Dan Dutcher and Aubrey Williams, also from Bloomington, about opening a brewery and restaurant for years, Browne said. That pipedream will become a reality when Heartwork Brewing opens at 1703 N. College Ave. later this year, the Herald-Times reported on August 24. "We'd get together at the holidays and joke that if we ever end up back in Bloomington, we would do something like this," he said. In 2021, the crew purchased and began of renovating the former Huse building. Now, the outline of a patio can be seen out front and a row of taps waiting for beers lines the bar area. There's more seating nearby and another room can be used for private events. Eight tanks — six for fermenting, two for finishing — are located in the large production area behind the seating, which can accommodate about 190 people. Most recently Dutcher was a brewer with Bearded Iris in Nashville, Tennessee. There Dutcher helped craft many IPAs and hazy IPAs. He also has a passion for lagers. Heartwork Brewing will have two tanks dedicated to lagers and Dutcher anticipates having ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: House 6 Brewing to stop production next month
A sad announcement from the folks at House 6 Brewing in Ashburn. The brewery will stop production on its beers next month and the current owners will be leaving, The Burn reported on August 23.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that House 6 Brewing Co. will cease production in September,” the statement on social media reads. “As it embarks on a new journey, House 6 will no longer continue brewing operations and current ownership will be moving on from the company.”

They go on to say “we were unable to find our place in the ever-changing post COVID landscape.”

It’s not clear what is happening next — while beer production will cease, House 6 says it has lots of beer on hand and the tasting room will remain open for a period of time with updated days and hours.

They also hint that there are plans afoot for future uses for the space (possibly new owners?) — but no details are provided.

In the meanwhile, the brewery — which opened on Atwater Drive near One Loudoun in the summer of 2018 — is planning a 5th Anniversary Extravaganza/Last Dance celebration on Saturday, September 9th.

Brewery news USA, FL: Clearwater Brewing Company announces immediate closure
Pinellas county just lost one of its craft breweries, cltampa.com reported on August 23.

Clearwater Brewing Company, located in the Old Clearwater Bay neighborhood at 1700 N Fort Harrison Ave., took to social media to announce the unfortunate news.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that we are closing Clearwater Brewing Company effective immediately,” the brewery wrote on social media yesterday. “ We thank all of our customers, staff, and the City of Clearwater for your patronage and support over the last few years.”

Its website has already been taken down as well.

On commercial real estate website Loopnet.com, Clearwater Brewing Company's 1,736 square-foot parcel is listed for $825,000. In addition to the building and its outdoor seating space, the listing also includes its " 3 BBL Brewing System, multiple fermentation tanks, and a comprehensive cooling system.”

Co-owners Keith Ford, F. Bowling, Rob Neff and Howard Shirley purchased the old Clearwater gas station for $180,000 back in 2017, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Although its closure is effective immediately, its real estate listing has been online for the past several months.

In addition to popular beers like its "A Dolphin's Ale" IPA and Bomber's Brown Ale, Clearwater Brewing Company was also known for ...More info on site

Whisky news India: India's new definition of single-malt, single-grain whisky to come into effect on March 1, 2024
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has said that its definition of single-malt and single-grain whisky would come into effect from March 1, 2024. FSSAI has defined single-malt whisky as "a distillate obtained from fermented mash that uses malted barley without adding any other grain, which is distilled in pot still and produced in a single distillery", CNBCTV18.com reported on August 24.

Single-grain whisky will not include single-malt whisky and blended malt whisky or blended grain whisky.

Under this new directive, the classification of single-grain whisky will not encompass single-malt whisky, blended malt whisky, or blended grain whisky. The specification for single-malt whisky is derived as "a distillate derived from a fermented mash that exclusively employs malted barley, with no addition of other grains. This distillate is subject to pot still distillation only and originates from a solitary distillery," FSSAI said.

Meanwhile, single-grain whisky is designated as a "distillate obtained from a fermented mash that employs malted or unmalted grain and is created within a singular distillery."

Recently, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) had urged the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority to devise a more precise, India-centric delineation of the definition of single malt whisky. ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Prolonged heat creates unfavourable conditions for winter grain sowing
Prolonged heat across many Ukrainian regions has dried the upper soil level, creating unfavourable conditions for the forthcoming winter grain sowing, analysts APK-Inform quoted state weather forecasters as saying on August 24. Ukraine traditionally plants winter wheat which accounted for around 95% of all winter output, along with winter rapeseed and winter barley. “High air temperatures and the lack of precipitation in almost half of the territory led to a decrease in productive moisture reserves,” forecasters said in a report. “The top 0-10 cm of soil was almost dry in most areas. These conditions made it difficult to prepare the soil for winter crops and start sowing winter rapeseed.” Ukraine has already started the winter sowing for the 2024 harvest, seeding winter rapeseed. The farm ministry has asked producers this month to report their sowing plans for 2024 to form preliminary estimates for the 2024/25 season.

Brewery news UK: Alcohol-free beer price almost doubles in a year
The price of alcohol-free beer in the UK’s supermarkets has almost doubled in a year, according to new data from Reapp, TalkingRetail reported on August 22. A multipack has rocketed from £4.28 in June 2022 to £8.13 today – a rise of more than 90%, the retail data expert said. Yet despite these price hikes, sales have increased by 68% as more and more shoppers turn to the category. Some of the biggest sales of the past twelve months coincided with ‘Dry January’ as more and more people cut out alcohol at the start of the year. Reapp commercial director, James Lamplugh, commented: “Alcohol-free beer is becoming an essential for more and more of the nation’s shoppers as they seek to moderate alcohol intake. “Our latest analysis demonstrates how the category is surging with sales up by nearly 70%. “But with that we are also seeing price rises of over 90% on multi-packs hitting shoppers hard in the pocket.”
