4 Noses Brewing Company, a leading craft brewery known for its innovative flavors and award-winning brews, is excited to announce the opening of its new location in the vibrant Park Hill neighborhood of Denver. Canada: Feed barley, wheat prices coming down
|
Despite a hot and dry summer across much of the Prairies, prices for feed barley and feed wheat have fallen off over the past month, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on August 31.
The high-delivered bid for Alberta feed barley was C$8.06 per bushel, C$1.42 less than one month ago, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire. Those in Saskatchewan and Manitoba were C$6.50/bu. (down C$1) and C$6.40/bu. (down C$1.10), respectively. The high-delivered bid for feed wheat in Alberta was C$10.75/bu., 95 cents lower than last month. In Saskatchewan and Manitoba, they were C$9.50/bu. (down 85 cents) and C$8.65/bu. (down C$1.20), respectively.
Jim Beusekom, president of Marketplace Commodities in Lethbridge, said the general trend over the past month for feed grain prices have been lower, but he also outlined multiple factors behind the declines.
“Since the start of August, there’s harvest pressure. There’s available supply from producers and although the crop is smaller due to drought pressure, there still is supply available right now,” he said.
“To add to that, 50 to 60 per cent of Feedlot Alley is using corn right now. They have that corn purchased and coming in and they will continue to use what they have. It’s priced competitively with barley, anyway.

USA, GA: Round Trip Brewing to open second location in Marietta in spring 2024
|
Round Trip Brewing is expected to open a second location at Avenue East Cobb in Marietta in the spring of 2024, Rough Draft Atlanta reported on August 31.
The real estate company North American Properties, which oversees management and leasing of Avenue East Cobb, has named the Round Trip expansion as part of its effort to revitalize the mixed-use development at 4475 Roswell Road.
“One of the most requested additions we’ve received since acquiring AEC is a brewery, and we’re so excited to answer demand with a local brand,” said Brooke Massey, NAP senior leasing representative, in a press release. “Soon, neighbors will have a gathering spot to catch live music or a movie night right in their backyard.”
The original Round Trip Brewing is located in the Upper Westside. The new location is expected to be similar in atmosphere and will offer German-inspired food and beer.

USA, IN: Upland Brewing Company to open its doors in Carmel on September 1
|
Upland Brewing Company will open Sept. 1 at Clay Terrace, 14490 Clay Terrace Blvd. in Carmel, Current Publishing reported.
The Bloomington-based craft brewery will offer a rotating selection of beer and seasonal food menus.
“Opening the doors of Upland Clay Terrace is a natural step for the Upland brand and something we’ve been so excited about,” stated Padraig Cullen, Upland Brewing Company vice president of hospitality. “This location is truly special. With tons of shopping and recreation as well as outdoor space nearby, this spot is versatile and lends itself to being a quick lunch stop, evening date night location and more. We’re thrilled to be here.”
Operating hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday (kitchen closes at 10 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday (kitchen closes at 11 p.m.).

USA, WA: Darach Brewing’s last day of operation to be September 23rd
|
Darach Brewing just announced via social media that it is closing. The brewery and taproom opened in late 2022. In their own words, “Unfortunately, time was not on our side to grow a big enough base to support ourselves.” Darach Brewing’s last day of operation is September 23rd, the Washington Beer Blog reported on August 30.
The focus at Darach Brewing was farmhouse-style ales, mixed-fermentation beers, and other creative concoctions.
“From now until we close we will be offering discounts on merch and crowlers, starting with 25% off merch and $1 off crowlers. We hope to see all of you again between now and our last day!” the company said.

South Korea: Major brewer Hite Jinro sees shares slide 23% this year as profitability worsens
|
Despite the much-anticipated debut of its latest beer, Kelly, South Korea’s major liquor producer, Hite Jinro Co., finds itself ensnared in a consistent downward spiral of stock prices this year. The root cause lies in the company’s diminishing profitability, a consequence of amplified marketing outlays and the escalating expenses tied to raw materials, the Pulse News Korea reported on August 29.
As of Monday, August 28, the company’s stock price maintained a semblance of stability at 19,550 won ($14.78). However, the price reflects a daunting 23.48 percent descent from the year’s start, positioning it well below the average returns of the benchmark Kospi, which stood at 13.6 percent.
Hite Jinro’s stock value dipped below the critical threshold of 20,000 won per share on August 14, a stark contrast to the 25,600 won it boasted at the year’s outset. The trough was finally reached on August 24, plummeting to 18,920 won.
The drag on the company’s fortunes can be attributed to escalated marketing expenditures, a factor that has chipped away at Hite Jinro’s profitability. Australia: Brewing market more competitive than ever, CUB says
|
CUB has told the Parliamentary inquiry into dynamism in the Australian economy that the Australian brewing market is more competitive than ever and the company has been nimble to beat the challenges competition has brought, the BrewsNews reported on August 31.
Represented at the hearings by Amanda Sellars, Group Chief Executive Officer at Asahi Beverages, CUB argued that the competitive landscape had changed from 132 breweries 15 years ago to more than 600 now.
Sellars said these new entrants had created a “more fragmented and diverse market.”
She said the combined volume share of CUB and Lion has declined by around 10 per cent to roughly 80 per cent since 2009.
“As smaller brewers and retailer private label products have grown to around 15 per cent share,” she said.
“Coopers remains stable at around 5 per cent.”
In her opening statement Sellars told the inquiry that there are two key challenges that make for a tougher environment for all brewers, including CUB.
“Firstly, there’s been a progressive decline of more than 30 per cent per capita of pure alcohol consumption from beer in Australia over the last 25 years.

UK: Winter barley harvest complete, spring barley harvest makes good progress
|
Drier weather over the past two weeks allowed the UK’s harvest to make good progress, says the latest AHDB harvest progress report on September 1. However, the report also shows variable quality, including some lower Hagberg Falling Numbers (HFN) for winter wheat and germination levels for spring barley.
By 29 August, the winter barley harvest was complete, as was the oilseed rape harvest with the exception of a few fields in the North East.
Winter wheat harvesting is now in the latter stages, at 89% complete by 29 August. This is a marked rise from the 37% complete a fortnight earlier and is now ahead of the five-year average for the end of August.
Harvesting of spring barley also made good progress since the last report, though it remains slightly behind the five-year average. The areas with most crops proportionally still to be cut are the North East and Scotland.
Oat harvest progress is now also ahead of the five-year average for the time of year, with the main areas remaining in Yorkshire & The Humber (43% complete) and the East Midlands (60% complete).

The Czech Republic: Beer prices bubble up in 2023 with further increases expected

The cost of enjoying a pint of 12-degree beer in Prague surged in July, with average prices hitting CZK 64.30, compared to last year's CZK 58.80. However, this might only be the beginning, as the impending value-added tax (VAT) hike on draft beer could potentially drive prices beyond CZK 70 next year, Expats.cz reported on August 31.
Luboš Kastner, a spokesperson for the Association of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, shared these concerning insights earlier this week with CNN Prima. Nationwide, the average beer price reached CZK 54 in July, a sharp rise from last year's CZK 49.80, indicating an increase of over 8 percent.
The Czech government's recovery plan includes transitioning draft beer from a 10 percent VAT to the standard 21-percent rate. Had the average July prices remained stable, the new VAT rate would have likely pushed the national average to around CZK 59 for a pint starting from the new year.
Kastner's criticism of the VAT changes, especially in comparison to the absence of a consumption tax on still wines, raises concerns about the future of many small businesses, particularly in rural areas. Bulgaria: Carlsberg Bulgaria names new CEO
|
The Bulgarian subsidiary of Danish brewer Carlsberg said on August 31 that Teodor Nestorov will take over as its new CEO from September 1.
Prior to the appointment, Nestorov was marketing director at the company, where he has worked since 2014, Carlsberg Bulgaria said in a press release.
Nestorov, who has worked for Mondelez Bulgaria, is replacing outgoing CEO Wojciech Zabinski, who took the helm of the business at the start of 2021.
Carlsberg Bulgaria is a major local brewer with two breweries, in Shumen, northeastern Bulgaria, and in Blagoevgrad, in the southwest of the country. Its portfolio includes local beer brands Shumensko and Pirinsko as well as Carlsberg, Tuborg, Zatecky, Budweiser Budvar, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, Erdinger and Grimbergen as well as the Somersby cider range and several non-alcoholic beer brands.
Carlsberg Bulgaria's new can production line, in which it invested over 23 million levs ($12.8 million/11.75 million euro), opened in June.
