USA: Bill Gates' foundation trust buys AB InBev stock worth $95 mln
|
Bill Gates' foundation trust bought 1.7 million shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev after the company experienced a few months of controversy and declining stock prices. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust bought the shares — valued at about $95 million — last quarter, according to an SEC filing, CBS News reported on September 7.
Anheuser-Busch took a hit earlier this year when Bud Light sales dipped following an Instagram ad campaign with Dylan Mulvaney. The transgender actress and activist partnered with the beer company on April 1, outraging many conservatives.
Some people, including Kid Rock, called for a boycott of the beer, and reported sales dropped in the month that followed. Bud Light, which was once the nation's top selling beer, saw a 23% decline in May from the same period the year before. Sales slipped again in June, down 28% compared to the same period last year, according to Bump Williams, which tracks alcohol sales.
Bud Light was overtaken by Modelo Especial in the No. 1 spot, according to consumer behavior data analytics firm Circana.
After the backlash over the Mulvaney partnership, Anheuser-Busch attempted to boost its image by releasing patriotic ads and a statement from CEO Brendan Whitworth, who

USA, WA: Promising hop harvest season predicted in Yakima Valley
|
The hop harvest is underway across Washington State, and since the hops started growing in March, it looks to be a promising season in the Yakima Valley, KIMA reported on September 7.
The hop harvest officially started in Washington last week.
The vice president of crop production at Yakima Chief Ranches, says the quality and yield perspectives look good.
"The quality this year is excellent, it's been a great growing season," said Jason Champoux, the vice president of crop production at Yakima Chief Ranches. "Every year has its challenges, but this year's been from a quality standpoint and yield standpoint looks to be a great year. So, we are excited to welcome all our brewing customers to Yakima for Hop Harvest."
One of the challenges that they could see, is the weather.
While Yakima County is currently in a drought emergency, Champoux says that would only have an effect at the start of the harvest.
"The drought would be more susceptible to impact the crop earlier in the season, in the growing season," Champoux said.
But Champoux says at this point, the drought wouldn't have much of an effect.
He did say other weather elements could play a role.
"Really the only thing that can affect us at this

USA, TX: Three Empires Brewing coming to Frisco in mid-September
|
Opening day finally draws near for a new brewery coming to Frisco: Called Three Empires Brewing, it'll open at 6990 Main St. #200 in mid-September, fulfilling a dream that husband-and-wife David and Mandy Wible have nurtured for nearly a decade, CultureMap Dallas reported on September 6.
They're opening in downtown Frisco inside the historic Ford Building, and will be the very first stand-alone brewery to open in Frisco, ever since the city lifted the ban on breweries operating within city limits in 2020. Locals are celebrating the prospect of having a brewery in their own hometown. ("It will be so nice not having to drive to Celina, McKinney, Denton, Plano, Grapevine, etc for a local brewery," says one fan.)
The Wibles just secured approval on one of their final inspections, and are aiming for an opening in mid- to late-September.
The couple are Frisco residents and have long been homebrewing hobbyists. "Three Empires" represents a nod to their family of three (they have a child), and the idea that they were building a beer empire.
It’s only happenstance that this is also the third shot the couple has taken at launching their brewery. Third time's the charm.
Their journey to this opening began with

USA, TX: Labora Brewing getting ready to become Mathis’ first microbrewery
|
For more than a century, a cotton gin has stood in downtown Mathis. But for the past several decades that building has been bare and deserted until two brothers, Jake and Nick Resio and their friend Jay Poole purchased the building, KRIS 6 News reported on September 6.
In 2020, the group of businessmen discussed turning the property at East Rockport Street into a brewpub with the help from the Mathis Economic Development Corporation. They thought they'd hit the ground running on the redevelopment, but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the brew dreams were halted.
As more than a year passed, the crew began the journey again to build Mathis' first ever brewery company.
"So our goal with the project is we love craft beer, we love getting together with family and friends," Jake said. "But doing the project here in this building is really about trying to bring economic growth to the town."
The inspiration behind naming the brewery 'Labora' comes from the Latin origin word, 'labor,' an homage to the hard workers that used to operate the cotton gin at least 103 years ago.
The vision for the building is to have patio seating in the front, walk up windows for orders and

USA, MD: Denizens Brewing Co. to close its downtown Silver Spring location
|
Denizens Brewing Co. will close its downtown Silver Spring location on Monday, October 23, co-founder Julie Verratti announced on social media on September 5, the Source of the Spring reported.
DCBeer.com says the decision to close the Silver Spring taproom, which opened in 2014, is mostly because the original ten-year lease ends in October and the landlord wants to renew for another ten-year term. Denizens tried to negotiate a shorter renewal term, but the landlord would not budge.
Verratti told DCBeer that after the uncertainty of the last few years, Denizens is not interested in signing a ten-year lease again. In the wake of the pandemic, Denizens ceased brewing at its Silver Spring location, moved its brewery equipment to Riverdale Park, and sold excess equipment to other regional breweries, including Atlas Brew Works, Lost Generation, and Black Narrows.
The 12,000-square-foot production brewery and 150-seat taproom in Riverdale Park opened in 2019. Recently, Denizens added offerings from All Set Restaurant & Bar, Money Muscle BBQ, and Catalyst Hot Dogs to their food menus.
Staff at the Silver Spring location were informed of the decision not to renew the lease months before the official announcement. They have been offered employment at Riverdale Park if they wish,

South Africa: South African Breweries urge excise adjustment as beer sector volumes decline
|
The South African Breweries (SAB) has urged the government to consider an excise adjustment that is in line with, or below inflation in the upcoming Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in October, IOL reported on September 7.
This comes as beer production volumes have declined significantly in the first seven months of 2023 due to depressed consumer spending on the back of weak economic growth.
This was said at the SAB’s annual State of the Economy (SOBE) event held at one of SAB’s biggest breweries in Alrode, Johannesburg.
SAB CEO Richard Rivett-Carnac said the two excise adjustments that were in line with projected inflation over the past two budgets had allowed SAB to invest and continue contributing to the beer economy, investing in almost R12 billion in the past two years.
However, Rivett-Carnac said, “Given demand-side pressures emanating from constraints on consumer disposable income, and supply-side pressures from rising input costs, the alcohol industry has declined in volume in the seven months leading up to July 2023.
“It is now more important than ever for the government to adhere to policy and for excise increases to be linked to CPI,” he said.
In his February 2023 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an increase of 4.9%

Ireland: Heineken is Ireland’s leading drinks brand - Checkout Top 100 Brands report
|
Heineken is Ireland’s leading drinks brand according to the latest Checkout Top 100 Brands report. The rankings are produced by Checkout Magazine in partnership with NIQ Ireland.
The Checkout Top 100 Brands is based on branded value sales across the Irish grocery sector, making it the most accurate barometer of the biggest selling brands in the marketplace.
In compiling the report, NIQ Ireland measures the sales performance of over 5,000 brands from over 200 product classes.
The report shows interesting implications for the the grocery retail off-trade sector and Irish consumer behaviour.
Looking back to 2022, fewer than ten of the top 12 drinks brands retained their positions from last year.
This may indicate that inflation and the cost of living are biting into the pockets of drinkers forcing them to reassess their buying choices.
The report shows Smirnoff, Guinness, Bulmers, Jameson and Coors are still the nation’s number two, three, four, five and six brands, respectively, while Santa Rita, Casillero del Diablo, Rockshore and Corona retain their number nine, ten, 11 and 12 positions.
Beyond the top ten, three brands retain their 2022 positions this year. Irish lager Rockshore retains the number 11 position that it reached last year, Mexican lager Corona makes it three years

Australia: Western Australian Malt Barley Variety Receival Recommendations released for the 2024-25 harvest
|
The Grain Industry Association of Western Australia has released the Western Australian Malt Barley Variety Receival Recommendations for the 2024-25 harvest, the Grain Central reported on September 7.
Observations indicate there has been no major change in international barley and malt trade fundamentals over the past 12 months as diversification of markets and increased acceptance of Australian barley and malt to Africa, Asia, Mexico, and South America continues.
A considerable change that will impact the 2024-25 harvest is China’s removal of the 80.5 percent anti‐dumping and countervailing duty measures on Australian barley, and lifting of the ban on Emerald Grain, now trading as Louis Dreyfus Company, and CBH Grain.
GIWA Barley Council chair and InterGrain barley breeder David Moody said the end of the barley tariff was good news for the barley industry.
“WA has a strong trade history with China and our varieties work well within the Chinese malting and brewing systems,” Mr Moody said.
“Chinese maltsters and brewers will need to adjust to the change in the malt variety mix since implementing tariffs in 2020.
“For example, varieties such as La Trobe and Scope CL are no longer segregated, and WA growers have switched from Spartacus CL to Maximus CL.”
Mr Moody said the resumption
