Belarus & Equatorial Guinea: Belarus ships first batch of light malt to Equatorial Guinea
|
The Belarusian malting company Belsolod has shipped the first batch of light malt to Equatorial Guinea, BelTA reported citing a press release of the Belarusian state food industry concern Belgospishcheprom.
The shipment of Belarusian malt coincided with the official visit of Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to Belarus. According to Belgospischeprom, given the agreements reached between the heads of state to increase trade between Belarus and Equatorial Guinea, the volume of supplies to Equatorial Guinea will be growing in the coming years.
Belsolod is the largest producer of brewing malt in Belarus. For more than 30 years the company has held a strong position in the malt market, meeting the needs of Belarusian and foreign brewers in high-quality raw materials. About 60% of the output is exported to CIS and non-CIS countries. Since its establishment Belsolod has exported its products to more than 30 countries.

Ireland: Craft beer consumption up 13.5% since 2017
|
A new report has found that the consumption of Irish craft beer has risen by 13.5%, since 2017, Hospitality Ireland reported on September 11.
The Craft Beer and Cider Report was completed by Bernard Feeney on behalf of Bord Bia in collaboration with Drinks Ireland and the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland (ICBI).
The report shows there was an increase in market share of the 79 independent microbreweries that are currently in operation in the Republic of Ireland, as consumption of craft beer rose from 2.9% in 2017 to 3.4% in 2022.
Meanwhile, there are currently 12 craft cider producers in Ireland, and craft cider production accounts for 2.2% of total domestic cider consumption.
Irish cider producers generated over 50% of sales, within 50 kilometres of the producers’ premises.
On average 52.9% of apples and pears used in craft products are sourced from the producers’ own orchard.
The Craft Beer and Cider Report shows that the export market performance has almost doubled since 2017.
Half of microbrewers do not currently export, but two-thirds of these intend to export in the next three years.
It was reported that 60,300 hectolitres of craft beer were exported in 2022, compared with 30,500 hectolitres in 2017.
France, Italy and the UK were identified

UK: Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company planning to close its Wychwood Brewery from November
|
Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) has announced plans to close its Wychwood Brewery from November this year, in line with a break clause on the lease with the landlord who owns the site, KamCity reported on September 13.
The brewery, located in Witney in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, will continue to operate as normal for the coming months. Wychwood brands – such as Hobgoblin ales, as well as Firecatcher and Dry Neck beers – will then continue to be brewed at CMBC’s other sites, such as Marston’s Brewery in Burton-on-Trent.
The business is providing support to staff employed at the brewery during the consultation period over the proposals and will also explore opportunities for redeployment within the business.
Paul Davies, CEO, Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company, said: “We understand the depth of feeling towards Wychwood Brewery, and have tremendous pride in our team there. Our number one focus is giving them all the support they need as we begin the consultation on this proposal.
“The UK ale market is an incredibly competitive space, and combined with a turbulent economic outlook for the UK provides for a challenging environment for industry to navigate. By making use of the break clause in our lease for Wychwood Brewery, we

USA, IL: Guinness' Open Gate Brewery Chicago location to open September 28
|
Two years in the making, Guinness' Open Gate Brewery has an opening date in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood, NBC Chicago reported on September 8.
"It’s finally happening, Chicago!" the Guinness brewery wrote on Facebook. "Our taps start pouring Thursday, Sept. 28. Mark your calendars. We’ll see you soon (finally!). Sláinte!"
Diageo Beer Company announced in September 2021 its decision to pick Chicago for the location of the Dublin-based brewery's second taproom and brewing facility in the United States.
The 15,000-square-foot Guinness Chicago Taproom was constructed at 901 W. Kinzie St. in "a revitalized historic railroad depot" to include a brewery, taproom, bakery and restaurant. The Open Gate Brewery was initially on tap to open in the summer.
“As a native Chicagoan, I already know there are so many reasons to love Chicago - its people, culture, diverse and distinctive network of neighborhoods, and of course its food and beer scene," said Jay Sethi, chief marketing officer at Diageo Beer Company, in a statement in 2021. "The city was a natural choice to bring our first neighborhood hub to life."
The taproom is expected to offer "exciting new brews," some of which will only be available in Chicago, and stouts imported from St James’s Gate in

Belgium: Belgium is promoting its centuries of beer-making with a new visitor centre in Brussels
|
Belgium is promoting its centuries of beer-making and 430 breweries with a new visitor centre in Brussels that recounts the history of Belgian production and aims to show what is unique about the country’s beer and beer culture, the Retail News Asia reported on September 11.
Belgian Beer World will open on Saturday, September 16 in the neoclassical former Brussels Stock Exchange, renovated at a cost of $96.25 million.
Visitors will learn about “Belgitude” – Belgian identity – and what distinguishes Belgian beer from others – such as the four different fermentation methods and the culture of each beer having its own branded glass.
“In Belgium there’s more to it than the liquid in the glass,” said Krishan Maudgal, director of the Belgian Brewers Association.
Belgium produces some 1,600 beers, and its beer culture secured a place on the UNESCO global list of traditions worthy of preservation in 2016.
The new center shows production in the Middle Ages, when beer was a safe alternative to contaminated water, and hops were introduced as a preservative, and up to the modern day. The tour ends with a beer, suggested by a virtual barman, in the building’s rooftop terrace bar.
Brussels already has a beer museum, but is unassuming,

USA: Grupo Modelo, Constellation Brands resolve trademark lawsuit over Modelo Reserva beers
|
AB InBev's Grupo Modelo has resolved a trademark lawsuit that accused its U.S. distributor Constellation Brands of breaking their licensing agreement by selling unauthorized bourbon- and tequila-barrel Modelo Reserva beers, according to filings in Manhattan federal court, Reuters reported on September 11.
Constellation agreed to permanently stop selling the two liquor-barrel beers, according to a proposed final judgment the companies filed with the court on September 11.
The filing also said that Constellation could sell other beers with the "Modelo Reserva" name.
Representatives for the two companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment or more details on the agreement on September 11.
A Constellation predecessor began distributing Mexico-based Modelo's beers in the United States in 1996. InBev purchased Modelo in 2013 and licenses the Modelo brand to Constellation in the United States.
Modelo sued Constellation in 2021 over its Modelo Reserva beers, which Constellation advertised as being finished on wood from tequila and bourbon barrels. Modelo argued that the tequila-barrel beers broke U.S. and Mexican laws governing the use of the word "tequila," and that the bourbon-barrel beers violate Constellation's agreement to sell only "Mexican-style beer" with the Modelo name.
Constellation denied Modelo's allegations that it broke their license in a court filing later

Kenya: East Africa Breweries Limited top management under scrutiny for sale of additional shares to Diageo
|
The East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) top management has been placed under scrutiny by the Senate over the acquisition of an additional 15% shares in the giant brewer by its majority shareholder- UK-based Diageo Plc, the Kenyan Wallstreet reported on September 12.
While appearing before the Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization, and Tourism, EABL Group Managing Director Jane Karuku said that Diageo Kenya acquired an additional 15% shareholding in the brewer in 2023, by way of a Public Tender Offer to all EABL shareholders, a transaction which received a nod from the Capital Markets Authority(CMA) and other relevant regulators.
The Senate Committee Chaired by Kajiado Senator Lenku Ole Kanar Seki had requested the Managing Director to apprise the Committee on the strategic business impact and benefits of the acquisition of an additional 15 percent shares in the listed brewer by Diageo Plc.
A petition before the Committee also sought to know whether the acquisition of shares by Diageo PLC is a consolidation for the alleged transfer to and eventual takeover by Heineken or Castemil group; why the brewer was undertaking considerable downsizing despite the consistent posting of marginal profits; and the justification of its policy of disposing off huge company assets and

South Korea: Hitejinro considering acquisition of Windsor whiskey from Diageo
|
Hitejinro, Korea's largest liquor producer, is considering acquiring Windsor, the whiskey brand owned by British liquor giant Diageo, for 200 billion won ($150.5 million) after the sale of the business to a local private equity firm fell through last year, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on September 11.
"We are presently reviewing the acquisition of Windsor Global," Hitejinro stated in a regulatory filing on the Data Analysis, Retrieval and Transfer System (DART) website, operated by the Financial Supervisory Service, adding, "No decision has been made.”
"We plan to provide more specific details once they are confirmed, either upon confirmation or within the next month," it said.
The entire stake of Windsor Global is up for sale, which is currently held by Netherlands-based Diageo Atlantic B.V. Diageo operates separately in Korea under the entities Diageo Korea and Windsor Global.
Diageo tried to sell the Windsor whiskey brand last year, but the deal did not go as planned.
In March 2022, Diageo entered into a stock purchase agreement (SPA) with a domestic private equity consortium comprised of Bayside Private Equity and Metis Private Equity, agreeing to sell the operating rights of Windsor for 200 billion won. The agreement included a condition where Diageo
