|
As Alberta’s harvest continued, yields and crop conditions have varied across the province, according to Erin Harakal, trade manager for Agfinity Inc. at Stony Plain, Alta., Farmtario reported on September 17.
“There has been such a wide range across the map, it really depends on location,” she said. “We’ve seen some areas that are just below average of what they typically get. Some of them are average and others are (producing) basically half of what they usually get. It’s been quite the range across Western Canada.”
Harakal added that while corn imported from the U.S. is still the crop of choice for most feedlots in Alberta, there are many ordering more barley.
“Barley’s in demand, but we’ve been seeing more barley for north of the Lethbridge area, like Calgary and into the feedlots like in the Provost and Edmonton areas,” she said. “When it comes to demand, it’s not quite there. It’s starting to pick up just as we get more cattle on feed. Things are starting to really progress right now.”
September/October barley in feedlot alley was priced at C$325-C$335 per tonne (C$7.08-C$7.29 per bushel) delivered, while November/December barley was in the C$340-C$345/tonne (C$7.40-C$7.51/bu.) range, according to Harakal.

USA, IN: MoRE Brewing Company coming to Fort Wayne by April 2025
|
A “major private investment” was announced back in August for a brewery in Fort Wayne’s north riverfront area, WPTA reported on September 12.
According to the application, which was filed on September 8, developers say the location of MoRE Brewing Company will be at E. Fourth Street, between S. Clinton and N. Calhoun Streets.
City leaders said in an August release that the brewing company has three locations in the Chicago area and plans to invest nearly $6 million into the project.
According to the plans in the application, MoRE Brewing would be nearly 16,000 sq. ft. and sit on just a little more than 0.6 acres.
Developers say the building is planned to be two floors, with the craft brewery, main dining, and seating on the first floor, and terrace dining on the second floor.
City leaders say the construction of the brewery is part of Phase II of the Riverfront construction plan.
The hearing for this project is scheduled for Monday, October 9, at 5:30, at Citizens Square.
Developers hope to begin construction around March 2024 and complete the project by April 2025.

USA, OR: Ex Novo Brewing accepts offer to sell its two Oregon locations
|
Ex Novo Brewing, which put its two Oregon locations up for sale in March, on September 15 said in a Facebook post it had accepted an offer for the properties, with the sale expected to close in November, Oregon Live reported on September 13.
The brewery didn’t identify the buyer or expand on details of the sale. It said, however, that the buyer intended to keep “as much continuity as possible” between current Ex Novo operations and the new owner’s plans for the properties.
Ex Novo opened in North Portland in 2014 with a mission to give back to the community and support nonprofit causes. It expanded to Beaverton in 2019 with a pizza pub, and the same year founder Joel Gregory opened Ex Novo’s third location — in Corrales, New Mexico, where he had grown up.
In an interview with The Oregonian in March, Gregory commented on putting the properties up for sale.

USA, WA: Irrelevant Beer holds soft opening of its Vancouver taproom

Against a backdrop of post-pandemic closures buffeting the brewing industry, Sebastian Lynch and Mitch Montgomery are betting they have a combination of factors that will spell success, Oregon Live reported on September 14.
That’s why the business partners have launched Irrelevant Beer, a brewery that recently began production and this past weekend held a soft opening for a taproom in uptown Vancouver. Irrelevant is an offshoot of — and next door to — Relevant Coffee Roasters, a cafe and roasting company that Montgomery started in 2014.
For a number of reasons, their confidence may not be misplaced.
For starters, consider Irrelevant’s brewing pedigree. Lynch is a former lead brewer at Trap Door Brewing, an operation just down the street from Irrelevant that is renowned for its quality beers across styles — but especially some of the region’s best hazy IPAs. And head brewer Quin Tinling brings to Irrelevant a resume that includes, but isn’t limited to, brewing in Portland under Kevin Denny at Wayfinder Beer and as barrel program manager and research and development brewer at Level Beer.

USA, PA: 633 Brewing to close Waynesboro brewery
|
633 Brewing will be closing its doors in Waynesboro, after serving the community for about two and a half years. The closing is set as TBD in November after they do one final fundraiser, Breweries in PA reported on September 14.
The brewery, owned by business partners Kevin Barrick and Heather Weeks, first opened its doors in February 2021 at 118 Walnut Street in Waynesboro. After a little over one year in business, the brewery has already expanded its taproom, doubling in size.

Australia: Malting barley exports up 60% in July
|
Australia exported 381,997 tonnes of barley and 283,917t of sorghum in July, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Grain Central reported on September 15.
The barley figure comprises 305,269t of feed, down 27 percent from the 417,575t shipped in June, while malting at 76,728t is up 60pc from the 47,807t exported in June.
July sorghum exports at 283,917t fell 27pc from the June total of 386,965t, with China continuing its run as the biggest customer by far.
Japan on 61,085t was the only other sizeable bulk sorghum customer for July.
On feed barley exports, Thailand was for the first time the largest-volume market with 210,782t, followed by Qatar on 52,263t, and New Zealand on 17,043t.
Mexico on 30,502t, Japan on 19,570t and Peru on 14,185t were the top three destinations for malting barley shipped in July.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said low feed barley stocks in South Australia and dry conditions biting in Queensland and northern New South Wales were major drivers of the slide in volume exported seen in July.

Ireland: Diageo warns further delays could jeopardise Kildare brewery
|
Drinks giant, Diageo has warned that further delays to its planned carbon-neutral brewery for a greenfield site outside Newbridge, Co Kildare “will jeopardise the rationale for this €200m investment in Ireland”, The Irish Times reported on September 14.
A spokeswoman for the Guinness producer made the comment on September 14 arising from An Bord Pleanála informing parties that a decision on the case has been deferred until November 20th.
Diageo secured planning permission for the project in March, however an appeal by Athy man John Lynch in late April has stalled the project.
An Bord Pleanála initially pencilled in a decision date for August 28th.
However, in its letter to involved parties, An Bord Pleanála said that it “has not been possible to determine the case within the statutory objective period due to a current significant backlog in cases at board level”.
The letter added that “this backlog has arisen in the context of reduced capacity at board level in the first half of 2023 due to a turnover of board personnel in that period”.
