Nigeria: Nigerian brewers see 152% surge in finance costs due to naira devaluation
|
Nigerian beer makers have recorded a 152% surge in finance cost to N117.96 billion in the first half of 2023 due to the naira devaluation, BusinessDay NG reported on September 29.
The beer makers saw finance costs rise to N117.96 billion in H1 2023 from N46.81 billion in the corresponding period of 2023.
Guinness Nigeria recorded the highest increase of 2401.9 percent growth, Nigerian Breweries followed with a record of 260.8 percent growth, International Breweries reported 127.9 percent year-on-year growth while Champion Breweries recorded a 12.7 percent increase.
“The biggest problem for a lot of consumer goods firms are FX losses because a lot of them have USD liabilities to import raw materials on credit and as they have their debt as books they need to convert it to naira,” Ayorinde Akinloye, an investor relations analyst at Seplat Energy Plc, said.
He told BusinessDay that brewers had higher cost problems, an inflation environment, the impact of raw materials cost, price of goods, and other raw materials that they use have an impact on their cost and their profit.
“FX pressure is the biggest impact on their performance. Inflation and FX are the two problems because as inflation affects them they are also increasing prices,” he said.

Japan & South Korea: Japanese beer sales surge in South Korea
|
Sales of Japanese beer have surged to the forefront of Korea's imported beer market, with January to August import levels exceeding three times the volume seen in the same period last year — signaling a potential end to the nationwide Japan boycott movement that had impacted various Japanese products, including beer, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on October 3.
The revival of Japanese beer market share can be attributed to the improved relations between Korea and Japan under the current Yoon Suk Yeol administration, coupled with increased travel to Japan following Covid-19 transitioning into an endemic.
Japanese beer imports from January to August amounted to 36,573 tons, comprising 21.9 percent of Korea's total beer imports, according to data from the Korea Customs Service on Tuesday. The import volume's year-on-year increased by 238.4 percent. Japanese beer has outpaced its competitors, surpassing import volumes of China at 32,153 tons, the Netherlands at 29,243 tons, Poland at 11,291 tons and Germany at 9,911 tons during this period.
The resurgence of the neighborhood nation's beer marks a notable turnaround from its recent fall.
From 2011 to 2018, it had consistently held the top position in annual imports. However, the tide shifted in 2019 when Japan implemented

The Czech Republic: Budějovický Budvar brewery planning price hikes in the coming weeks
|
Czech Republic’s Budějovický Budvar brewery is planning to increase the price of beer by five to eight percent in the coming weeks, Czech Television reported, citing the company’s management.
Draught beer will go up by one crown, bottled beer by one to two crowns. The average price increase for packaged beer will be around CZK 1.50.
Other breweries are also upping the price of the most popular alcoholic beverage in the country. Plzeňský Prazdroj announced at the end of August that it would raise the price of its products by around six percent as of October. The reason cited was higher costs of energy, packaging and transport.

Mozambique: Overwhelming majority of Mozambicans prefer beer to any other alcoholic beverage, research shows
|
An overwhelming majority of Mozambicans prefer beer to any other alcoholic beverage, according to the latest report by Kasi Insight, a Kenyan market research think tank, News24 reported on September 30.
But not all beers.
The Kasi Insight Beer Tracker, an annual assessment of beer purchase drivers and market trends across more than 20 markets, found AB InBev Group's 2M beer was the most prominent on the market in Mozambique by far.
Drinking does not quite match reputation, though.
"2M emerged as a standout in brand awareness with an impressive 93% recognition rate, underlining its widespread recognition.
"However, in terms of usage, 2M registers at 52%, indicating that not all who are aware of the brand convert that awareness into consumption," the report said.
The second most recognisable beer, it added, was another local brand, Txilar, at 89% brand awareness, and 37% of respondents as drinkers.
Other beers that are visible on the market are Heineken and Castle Lite, which both share a "commendable 78% awareness rate".
Both beers fall behind 2M in terms of consumption levels, registering at 40 and 38%, respectively.
Budweiser, an American-style pale lager that is heavily marketed globally, is prominent in neither awareness nor consumption in Mozambique.
"Budweiser encounters a hurdle with a relatively lower

China: Budweiser China launches its first-ever organic beer
|
Budweiser China is making waves in the high-end beer scene with the launch of its first-ever organic beer, the Dao Insights reported on October 2.
Dubbed the “Brewmaster Organic”, the newly launched beverage strictly adheres to organic production standards throughout its production process. Maintaining a commitment to natural processes, the beer is free from genetically modified seeds, chemical pesticides, or fertilizers. In addition, over 95% of its ingredients (excluding water) are organic, a claim validated by its fresh certification from the Nanjing Guohuan Organic Products Certification Center.
The launch comes as brands increasingly align with the growing Chinese organic market. According to a report from JD.com Supermarket’s “White Paper on Organic Consumption Trends in 2022”, the nation’s organic market is expected to hit 107 billion RMB (14.9 billion USD) by 2023.
China’s burgeoning organic market, though growing, trails behind global leaders like the US, which recorded a staggering 50.9 billion USD in 2021 according to FiBL, highlighting China’s immense untapped potential in this sector.

China: Dwindling number of expats making foreign-run craft breweries shift strategies
|
For Great Leap Brewing, one of Beijing’s first craft beer brands founded in 2010 to serve the expatriate community, adding Sichuan-style spicy chicken to the menu does not seem immediately intuitive – but Allen Lueth, the company’s chief executive, has his reasons, SCMP reported on October 2.
“The dish goes really well with our beer,” he said. “It’s a big hit, especially among our Chinese customers.”
Like Great Leap, many of the city’s foreign-run restaurants and microbreweries that started out with menus catering to Western tastes are now shifting strategies and marketing to locals.
The change comes as the number of foreigners living and working in China has plummeted over the past couple of years, and continues to drop. Pandemic restrictions, geopolitical tensions, and an economic slowdown in China have all contributed to dimming job prospects.
Between 2020 and 2021, the population of expats in Beijing has fallen by more than 40 per cent to about 63,000, according to data from the American Chamber of Commerce China.
“Because of an exodus of expats, the addressable market for [foreign-run] businesses is shrinking, and competition increases,” said Alfredo Montufar-Helu, head of the China Center for Economics and Business at the Conference Board, a global think tank. “So

Vietnam & Australia: Western Australia malting barley taps into Vietnamese beer market
|
Western Australian barley is helping to quench the thirst of beer drinkers in Vietnam, which is recognised for its strong and sophisticated beer culture, Mirage News reported on September
As part of a trade mission to the country, Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis visited a Vietnamese brewery, that uses WA's finest malting barley.
The visit provided a unique opportunity to strengthen government and industry connections and unlock new economic opportunities for WA and Vietnamese businesses.
The Minister also met with Intermalt, which is the largest malting facility in Southeast Asia and is part owned by WA-based CBH Group.
The malting facility is a key supplier to some of Vietnam's largest brewers of international beers and imports much of its barley from Australia.
In 2022-23, WA exported 352,000 tonnes of barley to Vietnam valued at A$139 million, up by 50,000 tonnes on the previous year.
As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:
"Vietnam is consistently one of the largest buyers of Western Australian barley, and their developing taste for craft beers is good news for our growers.
"Vietnam's beer consumption sits at about 3.8 million litres per year, ranking first in the ASEAN region and third in all of Asia after China and Japan.
"This is
