Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine’s grain exports slump in 2023-24 season
Ukraine has exported 6.82 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2023-24 July-June season, down 24% from 8.99 million tonnes at the same time a year ago amid the country’s ongoing war with Russia, Reuters reported, citing agriculture ministry data.

The ministry also said that 153,000 tonnes of grain were exported in the first three days of October, compared with 297,000 tonnes a year ago.

Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tonnes of grain and oilseed in 2023, with 2023-24 exportable surplus totals of about 50 million tonnes.

Exports so far have included 3.4 million tonnes of wheat, 2.7 million tonnes of corn and 625,000 tonnes of barley. Ukraine, a major global grains supplier, traditionally has shipped most of its exports through its deepwater Black Sea ports.

The ministry gave no explanation for the fall, but traders and agricultural unions have said that Ukrainian Black Sea ports being blocked and Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube River are the main reasons for lower exports.

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 22, 2022, and during the first five months of the conflict established a blockade to prevent Ukraine from exporting grain on the Black Sea. Russia agreed to suspend the blockade in ...More info on site

HopsHops News Hops

Hops news USA, MI: Michigan hop farmers encouraged by this year’s ‘quality’ harvest
Despite concerns about market oversaturation and challenges in the craft brewing industry, Michigan hops farmers say they are encouraged by this year’s “quality” harvest, the Crain’s Grand Rapids Business reported on October 4.

MI Local Hops, a 220-acre hops farm located in Acme Township, about 10 miles east of Traverse City, harvested its eighth crop this September. Mike Moran, president of MI Local, which is in the process of selling the farm, reported his company has an “above average” harvest this year, even though it may not have broken any records.

Moran said having an experienced and consistent team helped grow a quality 178-acre crop this year, while the fluctuating weather patterns posed challenges during the summer.

“We’ve had to juggle some things a little bit, but it’s nothing we haven’t dealt with in the past,” Moran said.

This year, MI Local Hops has harvested an average of 1,200 to 1,300 pounds of hops per acre, a harvest Moran says the farm is “feeling pretty good about.”

“We’re up in some of our key varieties that we needed to be up on last year, and last year was a good year for us,” Moran said. “Centennial, Chinook, Nugget, those are up ...More info on site
