Hops news USA, MI: Michigan hop farmers encouraged by this year’s ‘quality’ harvest
Despite concerns about market oversaturation and challenges in the craft brewing industry, Michigan hops farmers say they are encouraged by this year’s “quality” harvest, the Crain’s Grand Rapids Business reported on October 4.

MI Local Hops, a 220-acre hops farm located in Acme Township, about 10 miles east of Traverse City, harvested its eighth crop this September. Mike Moran, president of MI Local, which is in the process of selling the farm, reported his company has an “above average” harvest this year, even though it may not have broken any records.

Moran said having an experienced and consistent team helped grow a quality 178-acre crop this year, while the fluctuating weather patterns posed challenges during the summer.

“We’ve had to juggle some things a little bit, but it’s nothing we haven’t dealt with in the past,” Moran said.

This year, MI Local Hops has harvested an average of 1,200 to 1,300 pounds of hops per acre, a harvest Moran says the farm is “feeling pretty good about.”

“We’re up in some of our key varieties that we needed to be up on last year, and last year was a good year for us,” Moran said. “Centennial, Chinook, Nugget, those are up ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Brunswick Town Council agrees to sell former fire station for brewery, affordable housing project
The Brunswick Town Council has agreed to sell the former fire station to a developer with plans to turn it into Moderation Brewing’s new home and affordable housing, The Portland Press Herald reported on October 3.

In a 7-1 vote, the council approved selling the building to Portland-based Developers Collaborative for $200,000. The company plans to spend $3.5 million to redevelop the 1919 building on Town Hall Place, converting it into Moderation Brewing’s new space on the first floor, five apartments on the second floor, a community kitchen in the basement and public green space outside.

The station, which has been vacant since the fire department moved into its new Pleasant Street headquarters last year, needs new utility systems, sprinklers, and asbestos and lead removal, according to a report the town commissioned in 2020.

“This is opportunity for us to act quickly and preserve a building that we need to save,” Councilor David Watson said. “This is what we want. This is what we’ve talked about in the past, is businesses coming into Brunswick, growing and needing a bigger space.

“This project meets so many of the town’s goals. … (It) will be a piece of that economic piece that we’re always talking about ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Golden Isles Brewing Co. to hold soft opening in St Petersburg this weekend
There’s no shortage of craft breweries in Pinellas County, from larger-than-life taprooms to intimate spots with just a few in-house beers. But a brand new, pet and family-friendly business tucked away in a quiet St. Pete neighborhood will soon add to the Bay area’s wide variety of craft breweries.

Owners Angie and Jonathan Bryan, along with general manager Kyler Dressel, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that Golden Isles Brewing Co. soft opens this Friday-Sunday, Oct. 6-8 at 3000 Dr. MLK Jr. St.

Built out of a refurbished gas station, the new spot will soon be adjacent to other St. Pete businesses like Pineapple Espresso, Sunset Grill and the newly-opened Calida Kitchen & Wine.

Although it's not open to the public just yet, its sign that reads “Good Times, Great Coldies, Stay Golden” has been hyping up residents of the ‘Burg for a few months now.

Angie stresses to their first wave of patrons (and soon-to-be regulars) to attend this weekend’s launch with grace and patience, as it’s the first time the new business will handle a high volume service.

“We’re definitely beer focused, but we’re not necessarily a beer bar,” Dressel says. “We’re trying to appeal to everyone in the neighborhood, so we really want ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Mac & Jack’s Brewing Company changes ownership
After 30 years as an independent brewery, Redmond’s Mac & Jack’s Brewing Company has been sold, The Seattle Times reported on October 4.

The buyer is Seattle-based Ackley Brands, a family business that owns and operates four wine brands in Oregon and Washington. The companies said they finalized the transaction on Friday, September 29 but declined to disclose the transaction price.

In March, Mac Rankin and Jack Schropp, the brewery owners, approached Ackley Brands about a possible purchase. Rankin said he and Schropp wanted a new owner who could carry the brand, known for its flagship African Amber, for another 30 years.

“We’re looking to retire at some point,” Rankin said in an interview. “We also really wanted to have a little bit more structure from the management side of our business.”

Rankin added the brewing company also foresaw the need for financial backing to move to a new location, as its current Redmond site near Marymoor Park could be impacted by a zoning change.

Moving to a new location will allow Ackley to double Mac & Jack’s production facility from 20,000 square feet to 40,000, according to Ackley.

Ackley Brands has only been in the wine industry since 2016, with the acquisition ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Beardless Brewhaus moving into former 5 Flags Brewing Co. space
It’s been a whirlwind year for Beardless Brewhaus owners Steve Dobbs and Nick Holmes, who opened their sparkling and spacious downtown Milton location at 5139 Elmira St. around this time last fall, the Pensacola News Journal reported on October 4.

After finishing the herculean, 17-month process of getting the project up and running, the two are already gearing up to tackle the next one: taking over the former 5 Flags Brewing Co. located at 5642 Woodbine Road in Pace.

What originally started as an inquiry to purchase their equipment after 5 Flags closed turned into a desire to expand their footprint across Santa Rosa County and build up the growing community in Pace.

“Steve and I went up there on their last day that they were open and really saw the space, and saw the potential and saw that the demand for what they had going and realized that they're getting out of this. Maybe it could be more than just equipment that we're buying," Holmes said.

“We started talking to the owners, and just kind of made friends with them, and said, ‘Hey, is there a way we can make this work?’ And they said, ‘I think we can make this work somehow, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Rising Storm Brewing Company to launch its newest location in Penfield next week
Rising Storm Brewing Company next week will open its new location at the historic Daisy Flour Mill in Penfield, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on October 6.

The Livingston County-based brewery is set to officially open at 1880 Blossom Road on Oct. 13 after a yearlong transformation to install a brewhouse and taproom in the historic building.

Bill Blake of Penfield and Jeff Riedl of Webster purchased the historic parcel last summer. The pair opened Rising Storm Brewing Company in 2018 in Livonia, Livingston County, this week celebrating the location's five-year anniversary. Blake and Riedl, both State University College at Geneseo graduates, started homebrewing together about 13 years ago.

"We cannot express how excited we are to finally welcome you all in to this beautiful space," the partners said in a social media post about the brewery's grand opening, posted on October 5.

With the project, Blake said, "our goal was to honor the heritage and tradition of the mill, while bringing the place back to life."

In its heydey, the Daisy Flour Mill was part of a collection of mills that stretched along the banks of Irondequoit Creek to what is now Panorama Plaza. Samuel Rich built the Daisy Flour Mill next to the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: New England Brewing Co. could move into West Haven beach
The New England Brewing Co. could potentially move into West Haven beach, WFSB reported on October 6.

While the brewery pulled out of a previous contract with the city, West Haven City Councilor Collen O’Connor says they never backed out completely.

The deal would include New England Brewing Co. taking over the current Savin Rock Conference Center.

O’Connor says the building has sat empty for the past 6 years.

“It’s an eyesore right now and we would like to see something go into there, something to bring people down to the beach and help the area get more better looking,” O’Connor said.

“When I was growing up it would be a place where you would have your birthday parties, people got married here, and they let it fall into disrepair. I think sometimes we undervalue the assets we have here in West haven,” said Samantha Degennaro, West Haven

Richard Mackin says this type of business would be perfect on the West Haven beach.

“I would absolutely love to have a brewpub here,” Mackin said. “I messaged both the town and New England Brewing. It is one of those things where that kind of thing is lacking. I think it would be amazing to just sit and have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: ROC Brewing shutting its doors on October 7
A Rochester brewing business is shutting its doors on October 7 at midnight and leaving some people who have rented out space scrambling to make new plans, WHEC.com reported on October 5.

One couple who put down a deposit for an event in December at ROC Brewing learned Wednesday that the business is closing and not offering refunds.

ROC Brewing has been a popular beer pub in the city’s East End, on South Union Street, but co-owner Chris Spinelli says the brewery has been struggling to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He is shutting down the business even though there are people who have booked private parties.

Andy Frey and Allie Vanbuskirk booked ROC Brewing for their private event. They are getting married in December and wanted a special place for their rehearsal gathering, so they went to ROC Brewing.

It was the perfect place to host 25 of their family and friends for the special occasion and they loved the atmosphere, so they put down a deposit for $700.

“We went on August 18th just to double-check to see the space that they would provide us, loved it, put the deposit down right then and there — and then just got the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Buzzsaw Brewing Company to close for good at the end of November
Buzzsaw, the Whitehall craft brewery dedicated to Belgian beer styles, is planning to close its doors for good at the end of November, 614Now reported on October 4.

But the brewery isn’t going down without one last hurrah.

According to head brewer and owner Quinn Bartlett, one final farewell bash will be held next month at the Buzzsaw taproom, which is located at 951 Robinwood Ave. STE. B. An exact date for the event hasn’t been announced, but it’s currently slated for late November, just before the brewery closes.

Buzzsaw will post the time and date of the party to its social media pages soon. At the event, its Belgian-style IPA, Czech Pilsner and Vienna Lager will be offered. Other smaller-batch seasonal and pilot beers will be served at the taproom until supply is gone.

The Whitehall brewery opened as a production-only facility in early 2021, creating quality Belgian brews that were either kegged or packaged into cans and sold locally. In the summer of 2022, Buzzsaw added a taproom to its Robinwood Avenue space, complete with 15 taps and handmade live-edge wood tables.

There’s still plenty of time to patronize Buzzsaw, as it will operate normal taproom hours through November.

“It’s heartbreaking to ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine’s grain exports slump in 2023-24 season
Ukraine has exported 6.82 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2023-24 July-June season, down 24% from 8.99 million tonnes at the same time a year ago amid the country’s ongoing war with Russia, Reuters reported, citing agriculture ministry data.

The ministry also said that 153,000 tonnes of grain were exported in the first three days of October, compared with 297,000 tonnes a year ago.

Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tonnes of grain and oilseed in 2023, with 2023-24 exportable surplus totals of about 50 million tonnes.

Exports so far have included 3.4 million tonnes of wheat, 2.7 million tonnes of corn and 625,000 tonnes of barley. Ukraine, a major global grains supplier, traditionally has shipped most of its exports through its deepwater Black Sea ports.

The ministry gave no explanation for the fall, but traders and agricultural unions have said that Ukrainian Black Sea ports being blocked and Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube River are the main reasons for lower exports.

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 22, 2022, and during the first five months of the conflict established a blockade to prevent Ukraine from exporting grain on the Black Sea. Russia agreed to suspend the blockade in ...More info on site
