Brewery news USA, CT: Urban Lodge Brewing Co. to hold ribbon cutting event in Hartford on October 12
Urban Lodge Brewing Co. is the latest addition to Hartford's Pratt Street, making its official debut Thursday, Oct. 12 with a ribbon cutting event at 3 p.m. It's the second location of the brewery for owners Michael Gerrity and Ryan Fagan, who opened their original spot on Manchester's Purnell Place in 2019, the CT Insider reported.

The new space at 88 Pratt Street features two floors with multiple bars, lounge-style seating and a full kitchen, serving burgers, sandwiches, salads, tacos and shareable snacks.

Gerrity said he and Fagan signed the lease 16 months ago in the space that was once Sweet Jane's, a restaurant and music venue. The South Windsor native said he and his business partner, who grew up in Manchester, used to spend weekend nights in the capital city, visiting former clubs on Allyn Street. They were also fans of Vaughan's Public House, which is now their Pratt Street neighbor.

"We all love Hartford. That was the night out," Gerrity said. So when friends connected to Hartford's business scene suggested they consider a second location in the city, they were intrigued.

The project came together with the help of funding from Hartford's Hart Lift program, which provides property owners with funds to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Staunton City Council approves new brewery at former Coca-Cola plant
The Staunton City Council unanimously approved a rezoning request on October 12 that brought John Schoeb one step closer to creating a 15- to 20-barrel microbrewery and tasting room at the site of the former Coca-Cola Bottling Works facility on North Augusta Street, The News Leader reported on October 13.

A restaurant may be added later, but for now Schoeb's plans are to brew beer for both Pro Re Nata brewery and music venue in Crozet, which he owns, and Chip Clarke's latest venture, The Steam Plant, located at 420 Richmond Ave. near the intersection with Greenville Avenue. Clarke purchased that property in 2017 and plans to create a music event space, which he hopes to break ground on this year.

"Will there be a restaurant in the future? Probably." Schoeb said when addressing council. "It's years down the road."

Instead of a restaurant now, Schoeb said he's spoken with restaurants in the area that he will partner with to deliver food to people at the new brewery.

The lot is approximately 30,000 square feet and the building is approximately 26,000 square feet, per city officials. In the 1970s, Coca Cola ceased operations at this location and moved to its current location in Jolivue. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Rising Storm Brewing Company launching in Rochester on October 13
Starting Friday, October 13, Rochester’s Daisy Flour Mill takes on new life as a brewery, WHEC.com reported on October 11.

Co-owner of Rising Storm Brewing Company Bill Blake said many of the historic elements people remember from when it was a restaurant, are still there.

Blake has been spending a lot of time learning how the old mill works.

“The old milling equipment has a lot of history to it, it brings a lot of the element of history to life, people can walk through the tap room and see the old milling machines in there,” he said.

For the past few years, he’s been working with contractors, construction crews and even the Penfield historian, to transform the vacant mill into Rising Storm Brewing at The Mill. He and his business partner already run a location in Livonia.

“This originally wasn’t on the radar,” he said, about the mill. “But our real estate broker brought us here, and we fell in love with the idea of what it could be, and the historic nature of it.”

The journey to transform it started with a walkthrough, in the fall of 2021.

While the transformation required some renovations, Blake said he still wanted to preserve pieces of history, folks ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Big Grove Brewery expanding in Iowa City with a new production facility
Big Grove Brewery is expanding in the Iowa City area with a new production facility that will be ready for use in February, The Daily Iowan reported on October 12.

The off-site facility is being constructed at a former Goodwill Distribution Center located at 3825 Liberty Drive on the east side of Iowa City.

“The Hop Lot” will include approximately 68,000 new barrels, allowing an increase in production by over 50 percent.

In a statement released on the company’s website, Big Grove Brewery’s Director of Brewing, Andy Joynt said the expansion will allow trucks and trailers to easily pick up beer for distribution, in comparison to doing so in the small parking lot of the Iowa City brewery and taproom.

Janelle Buxton, director of Big Grove’s industry and public affairs, said Big Grove was running out of space to create their seasonal drinks because of the necessity that came with their year-round brews, such as Easy Eddie and Citrus Surfer.

“It’s a good problem to have,” Buxton said. “An even more ideal state is once we get this production facility open, then all of our taproom locations will be brewing their own beers. Right now, we’re just not able to do that because we are ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Demand for feed grains currently at a standstill
Despite prices continuing to come down for feed grains in Western Canada, demand for them is currently at a standstill, according to Susanne Leclerc of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton, Grainews reported on October 12.

“I think we’re in that lull time right now between corn and barley (deliveries) as the (U.S.) corn harvest is underway,” Leclerc said, adding that demand is steady until more corn deliveries arrive at feedlots.

“There is an opportunity for people right now to see a late bump in barley prices, but there’s an opportunity to sell and have some movement on barley until we see more corn come in.”

She also said that not only is harvest pressure contributing to price declines, but so is a lack of international export partners due to ongoing geopolitical events.

With barley and wheat harvests mostly or entirely complete in Western Canada, Leclerc still believes there is a chance for feed grain prices to fall further.

“We’re seeing more of a bump in (barley) over the past two weeks than we have in a while. But I think we see more opportunity for it to come down based on the fact that we’ll see more corn in November. But it’s a real unknown ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Beachwood Brewing sells its flagship location to a new brewery
The popular Long Beach brewery, Beachwood Brewing, has sold its flagship downtown location to master brewer Ian McCall of ISM Brewing, who was an original brewer at the downtown location, the Long Beach Post reported on October 11.

Beachwood announced its decision to sell in an Instagram post on October 11, adding that the move was part of a strategic plan to expand and diversify its operations. Beachwood’s specialty brewing production will be moved to its Huntington Beach facility. They opened a taproom in Huntington Beach several years ago and a pizza and beer restaurant there, which opened last December. But the company isn’t leaving Long Beach entirely, as it just opened a taproom at 2ND & PCH, and it has another taproom in Bixby Knolls.

In February, the downtown location closed its kitchen citing homelessness, continuous construction, and the lack of foot traffic as most office workers remained working from home. Co-owner Gabriel Gordon wrote a letter to the downtown Long Beach Alliance outlining concerns about the business’ struggles to continue staying open at that location. The brewery never reopened its kitchen, instead opting to host local food vendors and pop-ups such as Proudly Serving burgers and others.

The brewery opened in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Two Beers Brewing ceasing operations after 16 years in business
Two Beers Brewing, a beloved and storied Seattle craft brewery, announced on October 11 that it will be ceasing operations after 16 years of serving the community. This decision comes with mixed emotions as Two Beers Brewing reflects on its remarkable journey, fond memories, and the lasting impact it has had on local beer culture.

Since its inception in 2007, Two Beers Brewing has been at the forefront of innovation, consistently producing exceptional craft beers that have garnered a dedicated and passionate following. Two Beers was one of the first Washington craft breweries to package in cans, a testament to their ethos “Drink Beer. Go Outside. Be Happy.” Additionally, the brewery’s devotion to the craft has earned it numerous accolades and awards, including a much-coveted GABF gold medal for Immersion Amber, and numerous gold medals from Washington Beer Awards and Sip Northwest.

“Unfortunately, it’s not an uncommon narrative to share news of a craft brewery ceasing operations,” explains General Manager, Felix Madrid. “Between increasing materials costs, increasing competition, and declining market share for craft beer, Two Beers has struggled financially for years and was largely able to continue operations because of the success of our sibling company, Seattle Cider Co. It was ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Chaos Mountain Brewing permanently closes its doors
After 10 years in business, Chaos Mountain Brewing in Callaway has permanently closed its doors, WSLS 10 reported on October 11.

The craft brewery made the announcement on Facebook.

In the Facebook post, staff say the business started out as the 40th brewery in the state. There are now around 380 breweries state-wide, and over 9,500 craft breweries nationwide.

Chaos Mountain Brewing officially closed its doors on Monday, Oct. 2.

Brewery news USA, PA: Cox Brewing announces closure by end of 2023
After 8+ years, Elizabethtown’s Cox Brewing has announced its closing by the end of 2023. The brewery announced in a social media post that “with the rising cost of goods and services coupled with a 2024 military deployment, it’s time to let go”, Breweries in PA reported on October 12.

The veteran-owned brewery originally opened in 2015 by the team of Nick Cox (Brewmaster/ Owner) and Tim Kreider (Head Brewer/Owner). The two grew up as childhood friends before going into the military. Nick and Tim began homebrewing in 2006 and less than 10 years later would go on to bring Cox Brewing to life.

Five years after initially opening, Cox would expanded to the village of Rheems with their “Rally Point” Taproom. A large space that was military themed featuring a wide variety of beer, 20-foot bar, dedicated stage for live music, bunker, and outdoor patio. They closed their original location with the focus on this new, expanded taproom. However, earlier this year, the brewery had also announced the closure of that space and returned back to the original garage location.
