Brewery news USA, MN: Bluff Brothers Brewing opens in Spring Valley
About six months after a Wisconsin-based brewery closed its brewery and taproom in Spring Valley, Minnesota, another brewery has opened in the Fillmore County community, the Post Bulletin reported on October 16.

The brothers behind the new Bluff Brothers Brewing were actually hoping to have another brewery down the street from where they were looking to open.

“We didn’t look at it as competition,” said Mitchell Plaehn, co-founder of Bluff Brothers Brewing.

However, Hop & Barrel closed its Minnesota taproom and the downtown Spring Valley building Mitchell and his brother Marcus Plaehn were eying for their business fell through.

The siblings instead bought a building off of U.S. Highway 63. They opened the business to the public the first weekend of October.

“That was the biggest hurdle,” Mitchell said. “Just getting to the point where we can open the doors.”

Although another brewery in town would help make Spring Valley a draw for craft beer fans, Bluff Brothers sits on a destination-rich path for craft beer fans .

Bluff Brothers joins a roster of destinations for craft beer enthusiasts between the Twin Cities and internationally-known beer tourism destination of Decorah, Iowa.

The brewery is a result of three years of work and planning. Some prodding by Mitchell’s then-girlfriend ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: By the Beach Brewing already open in Wilmington
By the Beach Brewing, is a true passion project for Guy Gulutz and Kim Findley, who moved to Wilmington from Long Island about 12 years ago. The idea came about after receiving a homebrew kit and book for Christmas which led to experimentation in beer-making, WilmingtonBiz reported on October 18. The brewery recently opened at 104 Old Eastwood Road. “Both respiratory therapists, we were just tired of the cold winters of the north; after vacationing here a few times, we fell in love with the beaches and the climate of the area,” Gulutz said. “Our goal was to make an environment where people could come and just relax and hang out. Kim works on the looks and the vibe of the brewery; she coordinates food trucks and entertainment while still working for Novant. I am the brewer. I am the one at the brewery working and taking care of the customers on the weekdays with Kim's help on the weekend.” With a goal of having a lineup of 12 different beers, By the Beach Brewing currently offers an IPA, a coffee porter, a golden stout and a cream ale. “We plan to make an apricot wheat next, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: New England Brewing gets approval to open in West Haven
There’s been a big step forward to bring a brewery to the waterfront in West Haven, NBC Connecticut reported on October 17.

On October 17, the West Haven City Council approved a lease so New England Brewing Co. can open at the site of the former Savin Rock Conference Center.

The long-running effort has previously faced controversy and legal action.

“I’m thrilled. I am absolutely thrilled. This is a great, great project for our shore. This will bring people not only from this city but all the cities around us,” said Mayor Nancy Rossi, D – West Haven.

Many community members spoke out in favor. They think it will be a positive addition to the waterfront and can help area businesses, too.

“I think it’s going to be a boom for the neighborhood, for all of West Haven," one resident said.

Some had raised concerns including whether the lease was a good deal for the city. Others raised issues about how the city got to this point.

“This is not a smooth process and it should not be that difficult for a business to come in here and do business,” a community member said.

It had been a rocky road to get here, including working out the deal ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Voodoo Brewing Co. coming to Spanish Fort’s Eastern Shore Centre
Voodoo Brewing Co., an independent brewer based in Meadville, Pa., has signed a lease to join the tenant roster at Eastern Shore Centre, a 560,350-square-foot regional shopping center located at 30500 Highway 181 in Spanish Fort, REBusinessOnline reported on October 18.

Joseph AmecAngelo and Patti AmecAngelo of CBRE’s New Jersey office represented Voodoo Brewing in the lease deal. Shannon Tyndall of CBRE’s Birmingham office represented both the tenant and the undisclosed landlord.

Situated about nine miles east of Mobile, Ala., Eastern Shore Centre’s tenant roster includes Belk, Dillards and Mountain High Outfitters. The new 5,035-square-foot brewery will be Voodoo’s first in Alabama. The company operates 12 breweries in six states that include both corporate and franchised locations. Voodoo Brewing plans to open more in the coming years in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Nevada as part of its U.S. expansion plan announced in early 2022.

Brewery news USA, WA: Pike Brewing relocating its operations
The brewery anchored next to Seattle's Pike Place Market for more than 30 years is moving out of downtown, KUOW reported on October 17.

Pike Brewing is relocating its operations to SoDo.

The brewery's Pike Pub and Pike Fish Bar will stay put at their current spot on First Avenue, a block from the market.

In a statement from the company, it called the move "a milestone" that heralds "a new era," and that the SoDo location will be a "state-of-the-art facility." Beer production at the new brewery will begin in January 2024.

The timing is sentimental. Pike Brewing tapped its first keg on Oct. 17, 1989. The Pike Pale Ale was the first beer the company brewed at 1415 First Ave. On Wednesday, Oct. 18 — 34 years later — Pike Pale Ale will be the last brew produced at that location.

Brewery news USA, IL: Exit Strategy Brewing closing its doors after eight years in business
Exit Strategy Brewing is closing its doors after eight years in business – although the owners, husband and wife Chris and Katherine Valleau, said they might return somewhere down the line, the Forest Park Review reported on October 17.

In the interview with the Review on October 16, Katherine Valleau said that she and her husband were simply burned out after navigating through the pandemic. They are also facing something that she said all breweries are struggling with – the market is over-saturated, and the customers are less interested in going out amid the inflation. The last day in business will be Oct. 29, and all of the events scheduled for up to that point will still go on as planned.

Valleau said that two major monthly Exit Strategy events that she’s personally passionate about – the Tellers’ Night storytelling event and Soup and Bread fundraisers for regional food pantries – will continue on at Robert’s Westside, a new music venue that the brewery’s former booking agent, Donnie Biggins, is opening up further east on Madison Street at the Circle Avenue intersection. Valleau said it was important to her to make sure those events continue, and Biggins was ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley prices stronger in September
Australian sugar, barley and feed grain prices were stronger in September, in contrast to cattle prices which have reached their lowest levels since late 2014, according to NAB’s October Rural Commodities Wrap, Grain Central reported on October 16.

Released today, the Wrap reports the NAB Rural Commodities Index fell 4.6 percent in September and is now 34pc below the peak in rural prices back in June 2022.

Cattle was the key driver of the decline in the Index, with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator plunging 21pc month on month in September and falling further in early October.

NAB senior economist Gerard Burg said the formal declaration of an El Niño event and associated challenging seasonal conditions was driving volatility in rural commodity prices.

“Various reports suggest that low confidence due to current and upcoming seasonal conditions may have encouraged producers to sell off stock, driving cattle prices lower,” Mr Burg said.

“Last month was the driest September on record with rainfall almost 71pc below average, and the third hottest.

“The Bureau of Meteorology’s outlook for both October and November look extremely dry in most regions of the country.

“El Niño is associated with hotter and drier conditions across eastern and northern Australia, which is likely to negatively ...More info on site

Hops news New Zealand: Largest hop growers have some tricks up their sleeve to be at forefront of global beer game
The largest producers of hops in New Zealand have some new tricks up their sleeve to cement their place at the forefront of the global beer game, Stuff.co.nz reported on October 18.

Clayton Hops have a patent pending on technology they’ve developed that could reduce the amount of plant material brewers need to add to the mix.

Using a cryogenic system to freeze “all the goodness that the brewers are after” was something Clayton Hops chief executive Brian Clayton said was being done by only two other hop producers around the world currently.

“This is another first for New Zealand, it’s the first for the Southern Hemisphere actually,” Clayton said.

The technology meant that hops could practically be put in one end of the system, and out the other end came concentrated hop pellets made up of frozen Lupulin glands – the part of hops that contained the bitterness and oils that brewers wanted.

“It effectively allows us to produce hop pellets that are double the concentration of normal pellets,” Clayton said.

“This is all about massive boosts in flavours and aromas, cutting down on transportation, storage ... less plant material, because it’s doubly concentrated, so better beer yields.”

Clayton Hops’ other product launched alongside the pellets ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Pernod Ricard considering adding more types of Scotch to its offer in India
French drinks giant Pernod Ricard is considering introducing more types of Scotch in India to tap the growing thirst for top-tier whiskey in the world’s most populous nation, the Straits Times reported on October 17.

Pernod’s Chivas Brothers, the world’s second-biggest producer of the Scottish spirit including namesake blend Chivas Regal, may add some of its smaller brands to an existing range of single malts, such as The Glenlivet, currently sold in India.

“We have a number of single malts in Scotland, but not all of them are present for the time being in India,” Mr Jean-Etienne Gourgues, Chivas’ chairman and chief executive officer, said in an interview from the sand-fringed Indian state of Goa, which has become a hub for local distillers.

“We are looking at everything,” he added.

The company’s Secret Speyside single malts, for instance, are not sold in India. Mr Gourgues, however, declined to share details on brands that might be introduced in the country.

Pernod’s push in India – which accounts for 10 per cent of its group sales and where it faces competition from rival booze titan Diageo and flourishing local craft producers – is part of a wider strategy to get Asian drinkers to spend ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Winter grain sowing 65.2% complete
Ukraine’s agriculture ministry said on October 16 that farmers had sown around 3.3 million hectares of winter grain crops as of Oct. 16, or 65.2% of the expected area, Reuters reported.

The area included 3.02 million hectares of winter wheat, or 69.3% of the expected area, the ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine is a traditional grower of winter wheat, which accounts for at least 95% of its overall wheat output.

Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky said this month that Ukraine was likely to sow less winter wheat than it initially expected for the 2024 harvest due to the prolonged absence of rain across most regions.

Solsky gave no exact figure for the acreage that could be sown this year while the ministry has still expected a sowing area of 4.36 million hectares.

The ministry also said farmers had sown 260,000 hectares of winter barley and 1.12 million hectares of winter rapeseed.

Producers plan to sow 692,100 hectares of winter barley and 1.2 million hectares of winter rapeseed this year.

Farmers sowed 4.46 million hectares of winter wheat, 612,200 hectares of winter barley and 1.376 million hectares of winter rapeseed for the 2023 harvest.

Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tons of grain and oilseed in 2023, with ...More info on site
