USA, FL: Amicus Brewing Venture opens in Tallahassee
|
One day on a camping trip in St. Marys, Georgia, eight friends sat in a neighborhood craft brewery dreaming about having a similar small-scale establishment of their own.
Little did they know, two years later, they would be making literal history in a brewery of their own, the Tallahassee Democrat reported on October 19.
Their dream influenced by ambience and spirits but driven by a profound love of craft beer and community has become a reality with the grand opening of Amicus Brewing Venture.
It will be the city’s latest destination, featuring an in-house brewery capable of producing several craft beers and green space to host locally-owned food trucks. It also represents the latest attraction to a growing entertainment hub south of Apalachee Parkway from the Capitol.
The grand opening starts at 12 p.m., followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony with the city of Tallahassee at 4 p.m., at 717 S. Gadsden St.
The eight friends and four couples — Laura and Shaun York, Mary and Sheldon Steen, Laura and Tom Barrett and Alison and Tim Denny — met at Faith Presbyterian Church and found themselves bonded by their faith and love for craft beer leading to the creation of Amicus Brewing Venture.

USA, ND: Junkyard Brewing’s West Fargo location to officially open on October 25
|
Junkyard Brewing’s West Fargo location will officially open next Wednesday, Oct. 25, KVRR reported on October 19.
Owner Michelle Juhnke says it’s taken months of preparation to make the 1970’s bank building look and feel like a comfortable and enjoyable place to gather.
The taproom features two patios, three bars, and plenty of seating. The bank’s vault door will remain to show the history of the building.
“The City of West Fargo is excited to welcome Junkyard Brewing into our downtown,” West Fargo Economic Development Manager Casey Sanders-Berglund said.
The taproom will be open from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on opening day.
The Moorhead location, which has been operating for several years, will remain open.

USA, IL: Chicago’s Metropolitan Brewing files for bankruptcy
|
Chicago’s Metropolitan Brewing has filed for bankruptcy protection and said in a filing that “The brewery will not be able to make it through the winter . . . without a comprehensive restructuring or sale,” according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.
Metropolitan is one of the oldest craft breweries in Chicago, the Tribune said. It started in 2008 in warehouse in the Ravenswood neighborhood. It moved in 2017 to a redevelopment in the Avondale neighborhood, according to the report.
The brewery “has been drowning in debt and struggling financially since making the move,” the Tribune wrote.
According to the report, the Chapter 11 filing says, “The bankruptcy is being filed because while (Metropolitan) can pay market rent for the brewery space going forward . . . there is no way the (brewery) can ever repay the amount of back rent the landlord is seeking.”
In 2022, Metropolitan took in $2.16 million in gross revenue, the Tribune reported. The brewery anticipates similar revenue for 2023; the report said that according to the bankruptcy filing, that amount would be enough to run Metropolitan profitably.

Ukraine: 2023-34 grain export lagging behind so far
|
Ukraine’s grain exports in the 2023-24 season so far have reached 7.8 million tonnes, compared to 11.5 million tonnes at roughly the same time last year, Reuters reported, citing data from the agriculture ministry.
The ministry said 1.05 million tonnes of grain were exported in the first 17 days of October. Ukraine exported 2.83 million tonnes from Oct. 1-21 a year ago.
Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s agricultural infrastructure and ships since July have destroyed nearly 300,000 tonnes of grain.
The exported volume included 3.99 million tonnes of wheat, 3.04 million tonnes of corn and 654,000 tonnes of barley.
Russia quit the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July, and since then its military forces have hit six civilian ships and 150 port and grain facilities during 17 attacks, destroying crops headed for export, said Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov. The initiative was brokered by the United Nations and Turkish government to get grain moving through the Black Sea region again following Russia’s invasion on Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tonnes of grain and oilseed in 2023, with 2023-24 exportable surplus totals of about 50 million tonnes.

Australia: Grain Industry Association of Western Australia releases recommended barley varieties list for crop 2024-2025
|
The Grain Industry Association of Western Australia has released the Western Australian Malt Barley Variety Receival Recommendations for the 2024-2025 harvest, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.
The annual recommendation list contains both a mix of well-established and new malting varieties, including: RGT Planet, Spartacus CL, Maximus CL, Bass, and Buff.
The Recommended List details the variety suitability for export and domestic markets (malting and feed/FAQ barley) served within each port zone.
As a primary exporter of both malt and barley, this Western Australia variety list is critical to end-users globally, the analysts said.
