Morocco: Government looking to increase taxes on alcohol
|
As part of its 2024 and in search of a formula to mitigate the fallout of the Ukraine war and other ongoing global crises, the Moroccan government is looking to increase taxes on alcoholic beverages. This tax raise concerns the domestic consumption of wine, beer, and spirit drinks, the Morocco World News reported on October 21.
The 2024 finance bill aims to fortify the country's financial landscape, revealing a significant shift in the taxation of alcoholic beverages.
The proposed change comes as Morocco seeks to address pressing economic challenges, including fiscal deficits and increased demands on public resources.
The draft legislation, which is currently under review, intends to increase the domestic consumption tax applied to wine, beer, and spirits. While specific figures have yet to be disclosed, the move is anticipated to lead to higher prices for these alcoholic beverages.
This tax adjustment is expected to generate additional revenue for the state budget, which has been under considerable strain due to the economic impact of the global pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian War.
Morocco’s treasury expects to collect this year MAD 14.5 billion ($1.3 billion) in taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, indicating an increase of roughly MAD 1 billion ($92 million) compared

Sweden: Carlsberg Sweden’s new investment to capture CO2 to put bubbles in beer
|
Thanks to an investment in a new high-tech carbon dioxide recycling plant, up to 40 percent of Carlsberg Sweden's use of carbon dioxide is estimated to come from its own process from the end of 2024, the company announced on October 24.
Carlsberg Sweden is now taking the next step in line with the sustainability programme, Together Towards ZERO and Beyond, and invests in a carbon dioxide recovery plant. This means that Carlsberg Sweden will start to collect, purify, and reuse the biogenic carbon dioxide that is currently being released during fermentation.
The investment will contribute to an even more efficient use of resources in the business and lead to 120 fewer truck transports each year. The carbon dioxide recycling plant will be located at the brewery in Falkenberg and will be used for beer, soft drinks, and water. Production is expected to start at the end of 2024.
“Aiming for circularly and making use of residual products is natural for us,” says Mikhail Zaripov, Utilities manager, Carlsberg Sweden. “By being able to recycle, process and purify the carbon dioxide from fermentation, we create new carbonic acid for our drinks. This means that we save our resources and the environment, while also reducing

Ireland: Amber Beverage Group to build one of the largest distilleries of Irish whiskey in Co Carlow
|
The Amber Beverage Group is investing up to €35m in the construction of one of the largest distilleries of Irish whiskey, RTE reported on October 20.
Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney in Co Carlow will become the brand home for ABG's two super-premium whiskeys - Writers' Tears and The Irishman.
The two brands are exported to over 50 countries worldwide.
ABG said its intention is that the distillery will be capable of reaching a production capacity of 4 million LPAs annually, adding that the distillery’s capacity will facilitate its plans to lay down significant reserves of maturing whiskey over the long term.
The company said its investment underpins its commitment to becoming a major producer in the global Irish whiskey market, which reached $4.7 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to $7.5 billion by 2028.
Subject to planning approval, the new Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney will be located on an historic 18th century site by the banks of the River Barrow in Co Carlow.
It is hoped that construction of the distillery will start in 2024. The construction process will take about 18 months with commissioning of the distillery in 2026.
Bernard Walsh, the Founder and Managing Director of Walsh Whiskey, said that located
