Brewery news USA, NY: Van Hassler Brewing to open its doors on October 28
Kateri Hassler and her husband, Laford, met over a beer and, she says, “we built our whole relationship, more or less, over beer”, Syracuse.com reported on October 24.

Now they’re opening a brewery, with Kateri as owner/manager and Laford as the principal brewer.

Van Hassler Brewing is scheduled to open Saturday, October 28 at 8045 Oswego Road (Route 57) in Clay, just a bit north of the Shops at Seneca Mall. (Van Hassler is a mash-up of Kateri’s birth name, Van Damme, and her married name, Hassler).

It will have about half a dozen beers on tap, in a brewery / tasting room that most recently was home to Cholita’s Peruvian Chicken, and before that was an Arby’s.

Beer will be the focus, Hassler said, although plans for the future include adding food and outdoor seating for next summer. For now, the tasting room will be the only outlet, although it’s possible Van Hassler will try to serve bars and restaurants in the future.

And all the beer for now is draft, with the possibility of cans or crowlers (large format cans sealed to take home) also in the future, Hassler said.

“We really just want to get established now, build our customer base and provide ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Hawk Mountain Brewery nearing completion of new production facility in Whitehall Township
A brewery that's been making beer inside a barn near New Tripoli, Lehigh County, is reaching new heights with a stately and scenic taproom and production facility in Whitehall Township, WFMZ.com reported on October 22.

Hawk Mountain Brewery, which has been brewing beer on Werleys Corner Road in Heidelberg Township for the past five years, is expanding operations to include a new brewing facility and tasting room about 12 miles east at 3530 Lehigh St. in Whitehall.

The newly constructed venue, with a five-barrel brewing system, will offer indoor and outdoor seating for customers to enjoy made-on-site beer as well as artisan sandwiches and sides, co-owner Matt Ritz said. Local wines and spirits also will be featured.

The Whitehall brewery will differ from the location near New Tripoli in that it will welcome customers on-site.

For the past few years, Ritz and his partner, John Dolnich, have used the space in Heidelberg Township for production only as they sell their beer to local bars and restaurants.

Customers can find the brewery's beer on tap at Kempton Hotel in Albany Township, Weathered Vineyards in Weisenberg Township and The Chicken Lounge in South Whitehall Township, among other businesses.

Construction on the Whitehall brewery and taproom began in late ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Muddy York Brewing to shut down its original brewery and taproom in Toronto
Two months after revealing plans to open a second location in the town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, Muddy York Brewing has announced that it will now be its only location, as it will soon be shutting down its original brewery and taproom in Toronto’s East York district, the Canadian Beer News reported on October 24.

From the announcement posted on Facebook and Instagram:

Despite the flourishing state of our business and our readiness for expansion, our lease is set to expire this year. Our landlord has opted against renewal, choosing to sell the property at 22 Cranfield Rd. While we have the opportunity to purchase the building, the escalating property values in the city have regrettably rendered it just out of financial reach.

As a result, we will be ceasing operations at 22 Cranfield Rd at the end of this year. We are genuinely disheartened to have to convey this news, as we were enthusiastically ready to enjoy many more years in this space. Our brewery tucked away in a small business park on the edges of East York has exceeded all our expectations and has proven to be a prosperous and flourishing enterprise. Unfortunately, this situation lies beyond our control.

Muddy York launched in January ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Guardian Brewing Co. to close in Saugatuck
Guardian Brewing Co. will say goodbye to Saugatuck's famous Red Barn in the coming months, The Holland Sentinel reported.

Kim Collins and her partner, Kate Bishop, made big changes to the historic building, once a community theater, in 2018, converting the property to a restaurant, brewery and event center.

But "after many long, hard conversations," the duo has decided to relocate to Ohio.

"We have to say goodbye to Guardian Brewing as we know it and re-invent ourselves elsewhere," the couple wrote on social media last week. "For five years, we have shared our beer and our hearts with you all, and letting go will be very difficult. We made it through the trials of opening a business, a global pandemic, and years of road construction; yet, none of these are why we are moving on.

"Recently, we've had another parent navigate through cancer. This one really shook us. After multiple trips to Ohio these last three months, it has become clear that family is our number one priority above all else. In order to care for them better, we will be moving our aging parents in with us in another location."

Collins and Bishop looked at 100 different properties for their business in 2017, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Metropolitan Brewing LLC files for bankruptcy
Metropolitan Brewing LLC filed for bankruptcy this month, citing, among other debts, $1 million in back rent owed to its landlord, The Business Journals reported on October 20.

According to an Oct. 3 bankruptcy filing in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois, the Chicago Brewery owes back rent to Rockwell Properties LLC for its 33,000-square-foot site at 3057 N. Rockwell St.

Founded in 2008, Metropolitan Brewing signed a 15-year lease for its current location in 2015.

The million-dollar figure for back rent is in dispute, however, according to the Chicago Tribune, and will need to be forgiven in full or in part in order for the company to restructure. If Metropolitan Brewing is unable to rework its debt, the business may have to sell or liquidate, said owners Doug and Tracy Hurst.

In addition to back rent, Metropolitan Brewing’s debts cited in the filing include $1 million to North Carolina-based Live Oak Banking Co. for an equipment loan and $386,000 to the Small Business Administration for an Economic Impact Disaster Loan.

The brewery currently has eight full-time and 14 part-time employees, and last year grossed $2.16 million, according to the report.

Whisky news Ireland: Amber Beverage Group to build one of the largest distilleries of Irish whiskey in Co Carlow
The Amber Beverage Group is investing up to €35m in the construction of one of the largest distilleries of Irish whiskey, RTE reported on October 20.

Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney in Co Carlow will become the brand home for ABG's two super-premium whiskeys - Writers' Tears and The Irishman.

The two brands are exported to over 50 countries worldwide.

ABG said its intention is that the distillery will be capable of reaching a production capacity of 4 million LPAs annually, adding that the distillery’s capacity will facilitate its plans to lay down significant reserves of maturing whiskey over the long term.

The company said its investment underpins its commitment to becoming a major producer in the global Irish whiskey market, which reached $4.7 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to $7.5 billion by 2028.

Subject to planning approval, the new Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney will be located on an historic 18th century site by the banks of the River Barrow in Co Carlow.

It is hoped that construction of the distillery will start in 2024. The construction process will take about 18 months with commissioning of the distillery in 2026.

Bernard Walsh, the Founder and Managing Director of Walsh Whiskey, said that located ...More info on site

Brewery news Sweden: Carlsberg Sweden’s new investment to capture CO2 to put bubbles in beer
Thanks to an investment in a new high-tech carbon dioxide recycling plant, up to 40 percent of Carlsberg Sweden's use of carbon dioxide is estimated to come from its own process from the end of 2024, the company announced on October 24.

Carlsberg Sweden is now taking the next step in line with the sustainability programme, Together Towards ZERO and Beyond, and invests in a carbon dioxide recovery plant. This means that Carlsberg Sweden will start to collect, purify, and reuse the biogenic carbon dioxide that is currently being released during fermentation.

The investment will contribute to an even more efficient use of resources in the business and lead to 120 fewer truck transports each year. The carbon dioxide recycling plant will be located at the brewery in Falkenberg and will be used for beer, soft drinks, and water. Production is expected to start at the end of 2024.

“Aiming for circularly and making use of residual products is natural for us,” says Mikhail Zaripov, Utilities manager, Carlsberg Sweden. “By being able to recycle, process and purify the carbon dioxide from fermentation, we create new carbonic acid for our drinks. This means that we save our resources and the environment, while also reducing ...More info on site

Brewery news Morocco: Government looking to increase taxes on alcohol
As part of its 2024 and in search of a formula to mitigate the fallout of the Ukraine war and other ongoing global crises, the Moroccan government is looking to increase taxes on alcoholic beverages. This tax raise concerns the domestic consumption of wine, beer, and spirit drinks, the Morocco World News reported on October 21.

The 2024 finance bill aims to fortify the country's financial landscape, revealing a significant shift in the taxation of alcoholic beverages.

The proposed change comes as Morocco seeks to address pressing economic challenges, including fiscal deficits and increased demands on public resources.

The draft legislation, which is currently under review, intends to increase the domestic consumption tax applied to wine, beer, and spirits. While specific figures have yet to be disclosed, the move is anticipated to lead to higher prices for these alcoholic beverages.

This tax adjustment is expected to generate additional revenue for the state budget, which has been under considerable strain due to the economic impact of the global pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian War.

Morocco’s treasury expects to collect this year MAD 14.5 billion ($1.3 billion) in taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, indicating an increase of roughly MAD 1 billion ($92 million) compared ...More info on site
