Brewery news USA, TX: Three Empires Brewery Co. open and ready for business in Frisco
A new local brewery is open and ready for business in Frisco, the Community Impact reported on October 26.

Three Empires Brewery Co. celebrated a soft opening Sept. 30 and is now open four days a week, co-owner David Wible said.

While the brewery was unable to host its grand opening in October as planned, one is tentatively scheduled for November, Wible said.

Brewery news USA, CT: Elicit Brewing Co. sets its sights on a third site in Hat City
A former Danbury bookstore is eyeing a brewpub makeover, The Patch reported on October 24.

Elicit Brewing Co., with one location in Manchester and another planned in Fairfield, has its sights set on a third site, in Hat City. According to Bob Hill, chief development officer for Elicit parent company Eli's Restaurant Group, the business has finalized a lease to take over the former Barnes & Noble space at Danbury Square.

"It's technically not finalized" until a few more Ts are crossed, Hill said, but he was optimistic, and enthusiastic about bringing the "Elicit experience" to Danbury.

That experience is typically a whimsical one, with brews named "Marriage Counseling," "Botched Facelift," and "I'll Be A Monkey's Dunkel" sharing spigot-space with your Guinesses and your Pabst Blue Ribbons. The pub's online menu for its Manchester location shows 19 Elicit beers on tap, and another 22 not made by the home team also available on draft. The eats include all the pub food mainstays, as well as six kinds of French fries, eight types of taco and a tower constructed from Bavarian pretzels, served up with honey mustard and Elicit beer cheese.

"We're kind of unique in that we have infused hospitality and entertainment into the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Midnight Owl Brewing Co. scheduled to open in Shaker Heights on October 28
A Shaker Heights neighborhood that lost a longtime bakery is gaining a brewery: Midnight Owl Brewing Co. is scheduled to open Saturday, Oct. 28., Cleveland.com reported.

If you walk in to the Chagrin Road space, you might remember Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, but the redesigned location looks little like its predecessor. Joel Warger and Rosemary Mudry are putting finishing touches on the space - replacing bar tops, tweaking the draft system and getting ready to pour beer. Garage doors have been added to the front.

Midnight Owl is 2.5 miles due west of Interstate-271 in an area lined with an assortment of businesses and nearby residences.

“That’s the model that works now – you’ve got a dense area, and to me you’ve got so many restaurants and bars here, but people who live here say, ‘We need more variety, we need something else.’ I think we add to what’s already here,” Warger said.

Having the Van Aken shopping and dining district across the street doesn’t hurt, either.

“It’s a nice area to visit for a multitude of reasons,” he said. “We can all kind of feed off of the crowd we bring to the area.”

Midnight Owl covers 5,000 square feet, which includes the street-level taproom, full ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Widowmaker Brewing to hold its grand opening in Boston on October 28
Earlier this year, it was reported that a South Shore brewery was looking to expand to Boston, and the new location is now up and running, the Boston Restaurant Talk reported on October 26.

According to its website, Widowmaker Brewing is open in Brighton, moving into the former Brato space on N Beacon Street.

The new outlet, which joins its original on Wood Road in Braintree, is basically in the midst of a soft opening, with its grand opening taking place on Saturday, October 28, and unlike its Braintree location which uses food trucks and also allows patrons to bring in their own food, the Brighton spot has a full kitchen (which is run by Bone & Bread) that offers such options as salads, tacos, sandwiches, ramen, and more.

The address for the new location of Widowmaker Brewing is 190 N Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135.

Brewery news USA, VT: Whetstone restaurant, brewery up for sale
David Hiler recently started spitballing ideas for ways to reinvent The Station and Whetstone Beer Co. when a new pedestrian bridge comes online as part of the new bridge being constructed from Hinsdale, N.H., to Brattleboro, the Brattleboro Reformer reported on October 24.

Ideas included an "east meets west brewfest," weddings and parties, blowing out the sides of a wall for patio tables so customers could walk up with their dog and grab something to eat. When co-owner Tim Brady asked if Hiler planned to do all those things, he gave an honest answer.

"I was like, I'm not going to do that," Hiler said. "I'm tired. I feel like this is the time for someone to bring it to the next level, where it had been before the pandemic."

Hiler said he's old — 59 years old — and lost a leg. He has a prosthetic leg after being diagnosed with synovial chondromatosis in his knee, a usually non-cancerous condition that creates lumps of cartilage that need to be removed.

For now, Hiler is back in the general manager position at The Station.

"I put 12 years of my life into this and want to put it in good hands and ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Grain exports fall so far for the 2023-24 marketing season
Grain exports for Ukraine fell to 8.72 million tonnes so far for the 2023-24 marketing season, Reuters reported, citing Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food data, which also showed that by Oct. 28 of last year the country had exported 12.34 million tonnes.

Export volumes this year so far were 4.4 million tonnes of wheat, 3.5 million tonnes of corn and 669,000 tonnes of barley. In the previous season Ukraine exported 4.7 million tonnes of wheat, 6.6 million tonnes of corn and 1.05 million tonnes of barley.

The ministry said 1.97 million tonnes of grain were exported in the first 26 days of October. Ukraine exported 3.65 million tonnes from Oct. 1-27 a year ago.

Ukraine is among the world’s leading exporters of wheat, corn and barley. The country traditionally has shipped most of its agricultural products through its deepwater Black Sea ports, which have been under siege since Russia’s February 2022 invasion and blockade. Since the end of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which offered safe passage for grain shipments until July this year, Russia also has attacked Ukraine’s agricultural infrastructure on the Danube River.

Ukrainian officials said 51 cargo vessels had entered a new Black Sea shipping corridor since it came into ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine farmers sow 322,000 ha of winter barley as of October 24
Ukraine’s agriculture ministry said on October 25 that farmers had sown around 5 million hectares of winter crops as of Oct. 24, the Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide reported.

The area included 3.46 million hectares of winter wheat, or 79.4% of the expected area, the ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine is a traditional grower of winter wheat, which accounts for at least 95% of its overall wheat output.

Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky said this month that Ukraine was likely to sow less winter wheat than it initially expected for the 2024 harvest due to the prolonged absence of rain across most regions.

Solsky gave no exact figure for the acreage that could be sown this year while the ministry has still expected a sowing area of 4.36 million hectares.

The ministry also said farmers had sown 322,000 hectares of winter barley and 1.36 million hectares of winter rapeseed.

Producers plan to sow 692,100 hectares of winter barley and 1.2 million hectares of winter rapeseed this year.

Farmers sowed 4.46 million hectares of winter wheat, 612,200 hectares of winter barley and 1.376 million hectares of winter rapeseed for the 2023 harvest.

Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tons of grain and oilseed in 2023, with a 2023/24 exportable ...More info on site
