Brewery news Italy: Birra Castello finalizes sale of San Giorgio di Nogaro brewery to Royal Unibrew
The contract for the sale of the business unit relating to the San Giorgio di Nogaro plant owned by Birra Castello SpA, owner of the historic Pedavena brewery, to the Royal Unibrew Group, an international player in the multi-beverage market, announced last July, was finalized on October 2, EFA News reported.

Birra Castello SpA will continue to maintain ownership of all the group's current brands - Birra Castello, Birra Dolomiti, Pedavena, Superior and Alpen - and will continue with the strategy of strengthening and developing the Belluno plant.

The acquisition of the San Giorgio di Nogaro plant, with an estimated potential beer production capacity of up to 1 million hectoliters per year, will significantly enhance Royal Unibrew's production and packaging capacity of cans and glass bottles in Italy. Equipped with two filling lines, this facility will allow Royal Unibrew to strengthen its presence in Italy, allowing the company to meet the growing demand for its products both locally and internationally.

Thanks to the harmony between Birra Castello and the Royal Unibrew Group and in full agreement with the trade unions, the workers involved in the transfer are guaranteed the existing contractual conditions, thus ensuring the Danish group full continuity of the current ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company to upgrade equipment at its Northampton Brewery
Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) is to invest more than £10m in upgrading equipment at its Northampton Brewery, increasing capacity for producing its Snap Pack packaging and reducing its water usage, Food & Drink International reported on November 1.

The investments will see three significant upgrades realised, with all three set to go live in Q1 next year; a second-generation machine for packaging cans in Snap Pack is being installed, alongside a new laser can encoder and an improved can filler and seamer.

First launched in 2018, Snap Pack uses innovative glue dot technology to hold cans together, removing the need for plastic rings and making multipacks more sustainable. Snap Pack was co-developed by Carlsberg Group and KHS GmbH, an international manufacturer of filling and packaging equipment.

This technology has been used across some of the best-known and most popular beers in CMBC’s portfolio, including Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, San Miguel, Birrificio Angelo Poretti and Brooklyn Pilsner.

By the end of 2022, Snap Pack was used for 65% of the four- and six-can multipacks produced at the brewery. The new second-generation Snap Pack machine will allow double the number of Snap Pack multipacks to be produced, with the company aiming to fully transition by the ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Former Russian president sneers at Carlsberg after brewer says its business was stolen
Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev sneered at the Danish brewer Carlsberg on November 1 for having thought it could quit Russia without penalty after the West sanctioned Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, Yahoo Finance reported.

Carlsberg CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen on October 31 said Russia had stolen its business when President Vladimir Putin in July granted temporary control of its majority stake in the Russian brewer Baltika to the federal government.

Russia says the move does not change the ownership structure, but Carlsberg said it had cut ties with Baltika, scrapping all licence agreements, and would not enter a deal with Moscow that would make the seizure look legitimate.

Medvedev, once seen as a liberal reformer but now an arch-hawk as deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, mocked the brewer in a typically profane posting on Telegram.

"Like their brethren in the Western menagerie, they abandoned everything in Russia for political reasons ..., refused to fulfil their obligations to Russian contractors.

"And they thought they'd be left alone," he wrote. "'We give you sanctions, and weapons to the Ukrainian regime, but don't you touch our property, or at least let us sell it profitably'."

The Danish group halted investments in Russia shortly after the invasion and ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery credits recovery of tap beer sales for boosting financial year results
Australia’s Coopers Brewery have credited the recovery of tap beer and higher malted barley sales for boosting their financial year results as their packaged beer sales were down 5%, the Beer & Brewer reported on November 2.

In a media statement, their managing director Dr Tim Cooper said keg sales had reflected the public’s return to hospitality venues and that they had been approaching pre-pandemic levels at the end of the financial year. Despite keg sales still being down 14% compared to the pre-Covid 2019 financial year, Coopers’ keg volumes rose 26% over the 12 months to June 30, 2023.

However, Dr Cooper said the boost from keg volume is now “slightly under pressure due to the cost-of-living crisis”.

“There is no doubt the beer market in Australia faces challenges brought on by increasing cost-of-living pressures, market concentration and excessive taxation on beer,” he added.

Coopers’ packaged beer sales were down 5% while their total beer sales, excluding non-alcoholic beer, was 77.6 million litres for the 2023 financial year – a dip of 2.3% on the 2022 financial year volume of 79.4 million litres. Meanwhile, with the continued popularity of canned beer across the industry, cans now represent 37% of Coopers’ packaged beer sales. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors Beverage Company invests C$10 mln in St. John’s, Newfoundland brewery
Molson Coors Beverage Company in Canada is celebrating a milestone in an ongoing investment and modernization strategy for its St. John's brewery, its most easterly brewery in North America, CNW reported on November 3.

Since 2007, the St. John's brewery has benefited from over C$33 million in capital investments, including the installation of a new wet mill, bottle and can fillers, tunnel and flash pasteurizers, and a state-of-the-art can packer that entirely eliminates the need for plastic packaging, among other critical upgrades to both the facility and its equipment. The brewery's most recent investment, a C$10 million upgrade for a bottle washer in early 2023, has resulted in reduced water and electrical consumption, as well as an improvement in production efficiency and reduction in maintenance costs.

"Molson Coors has made strategic decisions over the past several years that reflect our unwavering commitment to maintaining a strong and vibrant presence in our brewery communities, including Newfoundland and Labrador," says Frederic Landtmeters, president of Molson Coors Canada. "We've invested not just in our business, but in the community that has supported us for decades. We have the utmost confidence in the future of this region, and we're excited to continue our journey together, raising ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Heineken axes Island’s Edge stout due to little demand
Island’s Edge stout has been axed by Heineken Ireland, according to a report in The Irish Times.

Heineken Ireland is understood to have ceased selling Island's Edge to publicans, who say there was little demand for the stout that was launched just over two years ago.

The report on Thursday comes just a few months after the Business Post found that Island's Edge had been "delisted" by many pubs across Ireland "amid low sales," with some citing Heineken's recent price increases as a deterrent.

“I am not surprised," Donal O’Keefe, chief executive of the Licensed Vinster Association, told the Business Post on Thursday. "It didn’t sell very well.”

Heineken Ireland has not issued a public statement regarding the fate of Island's Edge.

The social media accounts for Island's Edge have shown no activity since this past May, further evidence that the Irish stout is being wound down. Additionally, the 'find a bar' tool on the Island's Edge website is no longer live.

The latest Island's Edge social media posts show a collaboration with the Irish podcast duo The 2 Johnnies, who were brought aboard after humorously questioning the logic behind introducing a new stout in Ireland.

Rolled out in 2021, Island's Edge was initially marketed as "unexpectedly ...More info on site

Whisky news India: United Spirits closes its manufacturing plant in Uttar Pradesh
United Spirits Ltd (USL), owned by British multinational alcoholic beverage company Diageo, announced on October 31 that it has closed its manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh, which has been in operation for over 200 years. The decision was made as part of the company's multi-year supply chain agility program, which was approved by USL's board in January this year, the Goodreturns reported on October 31.

The multi-year supply chain agility program is focused on making the company fit for the future. As part of this program, USL has closed its factory operations at the manufacturing unit located at Rosa, Village Rousarkothi, Post Rousarkothi, Dist Shahjanpur, UP.

According to the company, operations at the unit were suspended in FY23 and no manufacturing activity has been undertaken since then. The factory has very old infrastructure and depleted machinery with age-old technology. Replacing such machinery and technology would have a huge cost to the company which is not viable as per the current market conditions.

The date of closure of the unit is October 31, 2023. As per its strategy, USL is now focusing on its premium and luxury products. Last year, it had sold over 30 entry-level lower-priced brands to Inbrew Beverages for Rs ...More info on site
