Canada, ON: Labatt invests in London brewery to expand capacity
|
A week after four large beer tanks made the journey from Sarnia to London, Ontario on Tuesday, November 14 Labatt announced a C$26.6 million investment in the London brewery, CTV News London reported.
According to a press release, Labatt Breweries of Canada is expanding production capacity of its London brewery by investing C$26.6 million to fund the addition of a new four-tank fermenting cellar and two new packers.
According to the company, this investment is part of Labatt’s “ongoing commitment to invest in sustainable solutions, evolve consumer demand and prepare its breweries for future growth.”
The company added that this week’s announcement will build on the brewery’s C$52.6 million investment in line upgrades, enhancements and sustainable innovations in 2021.
C$13.5 million of the investment will go towards funding the four new tanks for the brewery’s fermentation cellar, which will increase the capacity of the London facility by 597,000 hectoliters per year—equivalent to 4 new tanks.
“Our London brewery is the largest in Labatt’s network, brewing over 40 per cent of the beer we brew for Canadians, and this significant investment boosts the facility’s production capacity and sustainability performance,” said Jeff Ryan, VP legal and corporate affairs, Labatt Breweries of Canada.
In addition, C$13.09 million will fund

USA, AL: Fairhope Brewing Co.’s Wingman Brewing to open in Mobile sooner than announced
|
Fairhope Brewing Co.’s new Mobile venture, Wingman Brewing Co., will open much sooner than previously announced. In fact, operators plan to open the taps at noon Saturday, Nov. 18, AL.com reported.
Fairhope Brewing announced the venture in late September, and at that time projected an opening in early 2024. Wingman will operate at 656 St. Louis St., formerly the home of Old Majestic Brewing.
“We are thrilled to introduce Wingman Brewing Company to the Downtown Mobile community,” Brian Kane, managing partner of Fairhope Brewing Co., said in an announcement issued by the 10-year-old company. “This expansion not only allows us to showcase our established favorites but also brings a new dimension to our offerings by focusing on cutting-edge flavors and styles. We challenged our head brewer, Jacob Sellers, to test the limits at this new location, and we expect him to rise to the occasion.”
According to Fairhope Brewing, opening day at Wingman will feature 14 brews on tap. “Guests will find Fairhope favorites like Pink Delicious, a pink lemonade seltzer, as well as new styles brewed exclusively for the Wingman location, like a Moscow Mule-inspired seltzer and a brand new, triple dry-hopped Bankhead IPA.”
The latest announcement reiterated the point that Wingman won’t

USA, FL: Popular brewpub Brewer's Pizza to close permanently this week
|
After 14 years of serving up artisan beers and hand-crafted pizzas, a popular Jacksonville-area brewpub plans to close permanently this week, Jacksonville.com reported on November 13.
Brewer's Pizza in Orange Park, the home of Pinglehead Brewing Company, announced on social media on November 13 that it is shuttering its doors.
"We will be closed Monday and Tuesday, November 13 and 14, and will be open for beer only Wednesday through Sunday from 3pm-9pm," the microbrewery posted on its Facebook home page.
Taylor Rayburn, general manager, told the Times-Union that the brewpub "no longer was financially sustainable." Brewer's Pizza was hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and never recovered, he said.
Rayburn, who's worked at the brewpub 11 years, said they had tried to avoid closing as long as possible but the bottom line was undeniable.
"We tried offering special events, deals and things like that to remind people that we are part of the neighborhood, were open for business, were very happy to serve them and that we have good products. But it just wasn't enough. The bills kept piling up and the sales kept slowly trending down," Rayburn said.
Brewer's Pizza joins the list of Jacksonville-area restaurants and brewpubs shuttering their doors this year. Among

USA, MN: St Paul’s Clutch Brewing Company to shut down at the end of the year
|
One of the primary tenants at St. Paul’s Keg & Case Market is shutting down at the end of the year, KSTP reported on November 10.
Clutch Brewing Company shared the news in a social media post on November 9, thanking its customers for their support over the years.
The brewery has been in business since 2018 but staff members say it’s no longer sustainable to operate.
In the meantime, the brewery encouraged beer-lovers to stop by before the end of the year and “help us go out the right way: with a craft beer in hand and good times shared with friends and family.”

USA, WI: UpDraft Brewery shuts down after just three months in business
|
A new brewery in Platteville has announced it is closing after being in business for just three months, the Telegraph Herald reported on November 11.
UpDraft Brewery, which opened in mid-August, officially closed on November 9 after the business failed to generate enough sales, said owner John Patakos.
“We weren’t getting the sales that we needed to stay afloat,” Patakos said. “We didn’t get as much support as we would have liked.”
The brewery, which was located at 45 S. Chestnut St., opened after nine months of building renovations. Despite positive feedback from customers, Patakos said the business failed to generate an adequate number of sales.
Patakos said he has not determined what will happen with the brewery but said he has received calls from people interested in purchasing the building, the brewing equipment or both.
Eight people were employed at the brewery at the time of its closing.

USA, VA: Castleburg Brewery and Taproom closing its doors in Richmond
|
Another Richmond brewery is closing its doors, the Richmond BizSense reported on November 13.
Castleburg Brewery and Taproom is preparing to cease operations next month at 1626 Ownby Lane after nearly eight years in business.
Owner Karl Homburg said rising costs, namely rent, led him to the decision to close. He said he was set to renew Castleburg’s lease at the end of the year when he got a notice that his rent would be going up 80 percent.
“The costs have gone up considerably on things like freight and the cost of goods,” Homburg said. “The big one that broke my back has been rent.”
Castlesburg is one of the region’s smaller breweries, operating in about 4,200 square feet in a strip center down the road from Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s original location.
Castleburg built its brand on flagship beers like its Bishop’s Brown Ale and eponymous Cream Ale, and though it leaned primarily on taproom sales, it also had a limited distribution network throughout the Richmond and Eastern Virginia regions.
The brewery’s building is owned by an entity tied to downtown firm Crenshaw-Singleton Properties, which couldn’t be reached for comment. Other tenants in the strip center include a Sherwin-Williams

USA, CA: Riley's Brew Pub closes its doors
|
A popular Clovis brewery announced it has closed its doors on November 13, ABC30 reported.
"Now, I have to figure out where I'm gonna eat for dinner tonight," said Clovis resident, Ralph Watkins.
He was one of several customers surprised to see Riley's Brew Pub is permanently closed.
Watkins said he was a regular since the restaurant opened.
"It's different. It's not like everything else. It's not fast food, it's not like a coffee shop. They had great food and they had great service," said Watkins.
The owners of Riley's made the sudden announcement online on November 13.
Action News spoke to co-owner Michael Shirinian after the announcement.
He said he was under the impression there would be more development in the area when they went into business.
He was hoping to connect the pub to Harlan Ranch and says when development stalled, it had a major impact on sales.
"It's a sad day because we love our clientele out there and our staff was dynamite so you know, if sales would of grown and development would of been there, you know, we would probably still be there," said Shirinian.
Many employees are devastated by the news. One staff member who did not want to appear on camera said he's

USA, OH: Taft Brewing Company Ale House in Over-The-Rhine to close down on November 25
|
The Taft Brewing Company Ale House in Over-The-Rhine will be closing, company officials say.
The Ale House, which opened eight years ago, was the company’s flagship location. The company announced the closure on November 13.
Its final day of operation will be Saturday, Nov. 25.
“Ownership has self-sustained daily operations of Taft’s Ale House for the past couple of years,” the company said in a press release. “The pandemic, a significant decline in tourism and large increases in material goods costs have contributed greatly to the shutdown. But ultimately, Taft’s could not indemnify for the significant loss in sales since COVID-19 began.”
The company said it gave employees at the Over-The-Rhine location advance notice of the closure and was hoping to relocate them to Brewporium locations as well as reaching out to help them find employment at other businesses in the area.

South Africa: Delta to commission new sorghum beer plant in South Africa
|
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) listed beverages maker Delta will commission a new Chibuku Super plant for its South African subsidiary, United National Breweries, during the fourth quarter of this year, The Herald reported on November 14.
The beverages giant indicated optimism on the strong demand for the sorghum beer segment South of Limpopo River with the product now available in formal retail chains, albeit the challenging environment characterised by power outages, weakening Rand, and low disposable incomes.
However, there were delays in the delivery of machinery for the plant, which the group now anticipates receiving soon and commencing production in the fourth quarter.
“There was a delay in the shipment of the equipment for the local production of Chibuku Super, which is now rescheduled to the fourth quarter,” said the group in a performance update for the half year to September 30, 2023.
Figures from Delta show that United National Breweries South Africa recorded a volume growth of 2 percent in the second quarter and is flat on prior year for the six months.
“The uptake of Chibuku Super is promising, which is supported by the entry into a number of formal retail chains,” said Delta.
According to the group, South Africans consumed 779 000 hectolitres
