Asia: DBS Group Research analysts remain positive on ThaiBev’s performance
|
DBS Group Research analysts Andy Sim and Chee Zheng Feng remain positive on Thai Beverage (ThaiBev), which the analysts call the “undisputed market leader [of beverages] in Southeast Asia (SEA), The Edge Singapore reported on November 20.
“Its portfolio of alcoholic and nonalcoholic brands includes Chang, Saigon Beer, Hong Thong, Mekhong, Grand Royal, and Oishi green tea, amongst others. These brands have held dominant market share in their respective geographies in the past decade. The group also has exposure in the food business, and hold franchises for KFC and Starbucks, in Thailand,” they write in their Nov 20 report.
ThaiBev is expected to return to earnings growth in FY2024 with the recovery in the performance of its beer business in Vietnam, which was “muted” after a “dismal” FY2023. Sabeco, ThaiBev’s brand in Vietnam, is also “uniquely positioned” to weather the short-term consumer weakness in Vietnam given its mainstream brand positioning. The analysts also expect to see an uplift in earnings from the optimisation of advertising and promotion (A&P) spending.
“We expect to see growth in volume and an earnings recovery towards 2HFY2024 and pencilled in 8% top-line and 15% patmi growth in FY2024 (back to 2018 level of profitability, but only at 80%

China: Grain feed and residual use projected to rise slightly in 2023-24
|
China’s grain feed and residual use in marketing year 2023-24 is projected to rise slightly to 285 million tonnes, up 2.7% from 282.3 million tonnes in 2022-23, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.
FAS Post Beijing anticipates corn production in 2023-24 to edge higher to 280 million tonnes due to a larger planted area at 40.927 million hectares (up 1.9%) and improved yields. Feed and residual demand for corn is expected to be 222 million tonnes in 2023-24, growing 2% from 220 million tonnes year-on-year.
The FAS sees 2023-24 corn imports at 20 million tonnes, 1 million tonnes lower than the June forecast, as alternative domestic and imported grains free from tariff rate quota (TRQ) requirements are available to replace corn in feed; substitution of domestic old stock rice and sprouted wheat as well as imported sorghum and barley for corn will be significant.
“Traders unable to competitively import corn or receive TRQs have an active interest in alternative grains such as domestic sprouted wheat and old stock rice and imported barley and sorghum as replacements for corn in feed rations,” the FAS said. “On the other

Japan: Japanese whisky prices remain on a spirited upswing
|
Prices of Japanese whisky remain on a spirited upswing. As Japanese whisky has captivated the sophisticated taste buds of whisky lovers across the world with its high quality, exquisite craftsmanship and unique flavor profiles, some premium Japanese brands have seen their prices surge nearly 40% in the past five years, the Nikkei Asia reported on November 19.
With the speed of the expansion of supply limited by the aging process that whisky requires, the enduring Japanese whisky boom is driving prices higher.
According to data from Nikkei POS, which collects sales data from supermarkets and other retailers nationwide, the average retail price of whisky and brandy in stores was 1,624 yen ($10.80) in October, about 20% higher than in October 2018.
An analysis of purchase amounts and brands showed a noticeable increase in relatively expensive domestic whiskies.
Over the past five years, Suntory's top-of-the-line Hibiki Japanese Harmony blended whisky has become nearly 40% pricier, and a 700-milliliter bottle of Yamazaki single malt whisky has gained about 25% in price.
Prices of Nikka Whisky's higher-priced Yoichi and Miyagikyo, which also are single malt offerings, have surged as well.
Suntory raised the suggested retail price of Yamazaki by 7% starting with its April 2022 shipments due to higher

Russia: Whisky brands which cut ties with Russia still available there thanks to parallel imports system
|
Politico reported on November 15 that despite the best efforts of Beam Suntory and other major spirits brands to end business with Russia, citizens within the country can still find bottles of Jim Beam and The Macallan at Russian stores.
A Politico investigation found that products from both Beam Suntory and The Macallan’s parent company, Edrington, are still distributed in Russia due to Putin’s parallel imports system, also referred to as the “gray market.”
“It’s a common problem,” said Andrii Onopriienko, the head of Leave Russia, an organization that tracks foreign companies and their decision to end business ties with Russia after the country invaded Ukraine, per Politico.
Onopriienko went on to claim that the issue took place outside of food and beverage as well.
Due to the parallel imports system, the financial ramifications for cutting business with Russia can have plenty of drawbacks — so much that some businesses resumed selling alcohol in the country. After all, if a company’s products are going to be sold in Russia regardless, many companies would rather be the one to profit off of those sales.
Bacardi faced plenty of media scrutiny after pulling operations in Russia for a brief period and then resuming sales within the country.
