Brewery news USA, VA: Hidden Wit Brewing Co. opens in Chesterfield County
Chesterfield County’s newest brewery has opened in the Moseley section the county after being in the works for about half a decade, the Richmond BizSense reported on November 24.

Hidden Wit Brewing Co. made its debut this week at 21110 Hull Street Road, where it operates in a 10,000-square-foot building with a tap room, dining area, full kitchen and event space.

The brewery’s 10-acre site also features a patio and turf lawn. Plans are in the works for a stage for live musical performances as well as a gazebo.

It uses a 20-barrel brewing system and has room for 18 beers on tap.

The brewery’s majority owners are Butch and Kim Taylor, who also own Titan Auto & Tire in Chesterfield. Among Hidden Wit’s other owners are Brad and Andrea Cooper (who also own Steam Bell Beer Works in Midlothian) as well as Jessica and Chad Ritter, who is Hidden Wit’s head brewer.

Dave Butler and Stephan Parry of Parry Restaurant Group are also co-owners and investors in the brewery venture. Their restaurant group operates Q Barbeque among other restaurants in Virginia and North Carolina as well as hotels and a winery.

Barley news Canada: Demand for feed barley remains limp
As demand for barley remains limp, it has become rather difficult to move the feed grain, according to Darcy Haley of Ag Value Brokers in Lethbridge.

“There’s just no demand. We did barley March 10 at C$320 per tonne, and in April through to July it traded at C$328. That’s C$7-C$10 cheaper than corn,” Haley said, noting barley was currently at C$315 in the Lethbridge area.

“I have barley in front of me that I can’t sell, just because they don’t need it,” he added.

In the meantime, farmers have been hanging onto barley rather than selling it, something Haley disagreed with.

“I think producers are making a huge mistake. They should be moving something,” he said, suggesting farmers need to check grain elevators for prices and tail-end exports.

“Where’s the risk to the buyer? Through the rest of the fall and the winter there’s virtually no risk,” Haley said.

“One aspect that’s working in barley’s favour here right now is the price of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS),” he noted.

DDGS, he said, were currently $435/tonne and most often make up 20 per cent of corn rations as they are a protein supplement — and barley contains more protein but less energy, while corn ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Sale of Anchor Brewing Company for parts is underway
The bankruptcy and closure of San Francisco’s own Anchor Brewing Company is now in the inevitable auctioning-off-its-parts phase, with the brewery, its equipment, and its intellectual property all being sold separately, but some local beer preservationists are in the hunt, SFist reported on November 22.

With the holiday season set to begin, it’s a sad footnote that there will be no Anchor Christmas Ale this year. But it’s an exponentially sadder matter that the SF-born Anchor Brewing Company closed and declared bankruptcy this summer, sending many tears into many beers. Whatever future the Anchor Brewing Company may or may not have is now in the hands of an Assignments for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC), a third-party trust that is handling the sale of Anchor’s remaining assets.

And the Chronicle reported on November 22 that the bidding is underway for Anchor Brewing’s assets. The assets are being offered in three separate categories: the Potrero Hill property that’s the home of the company’s brewery, the equipment inside the brewery, and the intellectual property and beer recipes for anyone who may want to continue the Anchor Brewing brand.

The auction is being handled by a firm called Hilco Corporate Finance, and the screenshot above is ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries completes promised R5.8 bln plant upgrades
The R5.8 billion investment commitment made by South African Breweries (SAB) has been utilised to increase capacity at two of its plants, the South African Government News Agency reported on November 23.

The company said the investment – which was announced at the South African Investment Conference 2023 earlier in the year - was for civil works and new equipment to allow for increased local production for new product innovations.

Two of SAB’s plants were identified for these capacity upgrades - Prospecton Brewery in Durban and Ibhayi Brewery in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

The South African Investment Conference was launched in 2018 by President Cyril Ramaphosa to boost economic activity that had been in decline for over a decade in Africa's most advanced but struggling economy.

This year, President Ramaphosa set a new target to mobilise approximately R2 trillion in new investments over another five-year period which begins next year.

SAB employs around 5 700 employees and collaborates with nearly 3 739 suppliers, supporting around 250 000 jobs in the beer value chain.

In addition, the company sources high-quality ingredients from local farmers, ensuring that 94% of their beer production is locally sourced.

Chief Executive Officer of SAB, Richard Rivett-Carnac, said SAB is committed to ...More info on site

Whisky news Japan: Suntory Spirits to raise prices of 117 of its alcoholic beverages by up to more than two times
Suntory Spirits Ltd. said on November 21 that it will raise the prices of 117 alcoholic beverages by up to more than two times, starting with shipments on April 1 next year, Jiji Press reported.

The suggested retail prices of the Yamazaki 25 Years Old, Hakushu 25 Years Old and Hibiki 30 Years Old whiskies will jump to 360,000 yen per 700-milliliter bottle from 160,000 yen, the Japanese beverage maker said.

Such high-grade Japanese whiskies are becoming increasingly popular worldwide and sometimes sold for 10 times the manufacturers' suggested retail prices due to stock shortages.

Suntory said that the price increases are designed to help improve the quality of its products and enhance production facilities.

For imported whiskies, the price of the Macallan 30 Years Old will climb to 550,000 yen per 700-milliliter bottle from 351,360 yen. Suntory will also raise prices for some Japanese wine. The increases reflect soaring ingredient and transportation costs, the company said.
