Thailand: Proposed beverage tax framework restructure to bolster tourism and domestic spending
|
A proposed restructuring of the beverage tax framework is under consideration by the Finance Ministry, as revealed by the permanent finance secretary, Lavaron Sangsnit. The restructure aims to bolster tourism and domestic spending, Thaiger reported on November 30.
This Friday, December 1, Lavaron plans to engage in a discussion with officials from the Customs Department and the Excise Department. The proposed measures align with Thai governmental policies aimed at boosting consumption and tourism.
The first measure proposed focuses on increasing domestic and tourist spending, achieved by the abolition of duty-free shops in the nation’s airport arrival areas. The objective is to encourage tourists to spend more during their stay in Thailand.
The third measure proposes tax incentives to promote products that encapsulate Thailand’s soft power, a move suggested by various industry representatives to the ministry.
The proposed fourth measure looks at the potential relaxation of opening hours for nightlife establishments located in popular tourist areas, as stated by Lavaron.
The fifth measure involves the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which has been tasked with examining the feasibility of extending the visa-free policy to include visitors from a wider range of countries throughout the globe.
These five measures received preliminary approval from the cabinet on November 28, with the

South Korea: Korean distributor dumps entire inventory of Carlsberg beer after contract dispute
|
GoldenBlue, a Busan-based whiskey maker and distributor of imported liquor, said it has disposed of its remaining inventory of Carlsberg beer in the aftermath of a so-called gapjil (abuse of power) from its Danish partner back in March, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on November 28.
The discarded Carlsberg products, inclusive of their disposal costs, account for a sum of 490 million won ($378,100).
“As the dispute after halting the distribution of Carlsberg products hasn't been resolved, and with ongoing expenses like storage costs causing further losses, we had no choice but to dispose of all remaining Carlsberg product inventory,” a GoldenBlue official said on November 28.
GoldenBlue entered import and distribution contracts with Carlsberg Group in April, 2018. However, Carlsberg Group served a contract termination notice to GoldenBlue this past March, prompting the cessation of its Carlsberg beer distribution.
The Korean liquor company called Carlsberg's “unilateral” termination of that contract an act of gapjil.
“We have elevated the Carlsberg brand from the Top 15 to the Top 10 position among imported beers in Korea through substantial investments, including new hires and the establishment of a Beer and Spirits division,” a company spokesperson told the Korea JoongAng Daily Tuesday. “While the Carlsberg

Canada: Western Canada feed barley market remains relatively flat
|
The feed barley market in Western Canada remains relatively flat as steady corn imports from the U.S. keep domestic feeders well supplied, Farmtario.com reported on November 30.
Ideas that Canadian production ended up above earlier expectations were also keeping a lid on the domestic market.
Delivered barley into the Lethbridge, Alta. area is currently priced in the C$300-C$320 per tonne range, according to brokers in the region. That’s down by about C$20 per tonne at the top end over the past month, and well below bids at this time a year ago that were topping C$400 per tonne.
U.S. corn imports “continue to handcuff and prevent any price growth in this market,” Alberta grain brokerage Agfinity said in a market report. They also noted export opportunities would likely be slow in 2024, due in part to increased Chinese buying from other exporting countries.
Canada has exported 742,700 tonnes of barley through the first 16 weeks of the 2023-24 marketing year, according to Canadian Grain Commission data. That was down by 29 per cent compared to what moved during the same time the previous year.
While less barley is leaving the country, more corn is coming in. U.S. Department of Agriculture export data for the week
