Brewery news Canada, BC: Female-owned and operated Three Lakes Brewing Company opens in Kelowna
Breweries have been popping up throughout the Okanagan and now there’s a new brewery on the block, Three Lakes Brewing Company, Global News reported on November 30.

“This has been a dream of ours,” said co-owner of the Kelowna-based brewery, Melanie Raby.

“We have been in the services industry for 20 years….we wanted a change in our lives and we wanted to own our own [business] since other people at other establishments thought that we were the owners because of the hard work and ownership that we put into it.”

What was once a dream is now a reality. Now, Raby owns a brewery with her daughter, Tara Raby, as well as Cathy van Kesteren.

“Our pilsner is named after our hike, ‘The Hike Pilsner’, and it’s the hike that we were on when we decided to go on this adventure,” said Raby.

They honed skills after being longtime home brewers. Now, they are sharing skills with the public.

“It feels fantastic, honestly, and it’s so great to see and get all the feedback from our customers and everybody is just enjoying our space, drinking our beer and enjoying all our hard work,” said van Kesteren.

The brewery that is located near Kelowna International Airport has become ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Western Canada feed barley market remains relatively flat
The feed barley market in Western Canada remains relatively flat as steady corn imports from the U.S. keep domestic feeders well supplied, Farmtario.com reported on November 30.

Ideas that Canadian production ended up above earlier expectations were also keeping a lid on the domestic market.

Delivered barley into the Lethbridge, Alta. area is currently priced in the C$300-C$320 per tonne range, according to brokers in the region. That’s down by about C$20 per tonne at the top end over the past month, and well below bids at this time a year ago that were topping C$400 per tonne.

U.S. corn imports “continue to handcuff and prevent any price growth in this market,” Alberta grain brokerage Agfinity said in a market report. They also noted export opportunities would likely be slow in 2024, due in part to increased Chinese buying from other exporting countries.

Canada has exported 742,700 tonnes of barley through the first 16 weeks of the 2023-24 marketing year, according to Canadian Grain Commission data. That was down by 29 per cent compared to what moved during the same time the previous year.

While less barley is leaving the country, more corn is coming in. U.S. Department of Agriculture export data for the week ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Snitz Creek Brewing to open in former Mt Gretna Craft Brewery location
It would appear that brewing operations will soon return to 2701 Horseshoe Pike in Palmyra, PA. Snitz Creek Brewing recently announced over social media that “Snitz Creek Brewery Palmyra” would soon be opening at this location, Breweries in PA reported on November 29.

The brewery posted the following teaser online about the pending opening.

For those not familiar, that space was originally occupied by Mt. Gretna Brewing. However, Mt. Gretna announced their plans to close in February of 2023 after 5 years in business. Now after 8 months of sitting dormant, the location will return to brewing operations through Snitz Creek.

Snitz Creek Brewing is a family-owned and operated brewery based originally in Lebanon, PA which was founded in 2007. The brewery has become well known by locals for offering a wide variety of beers on tap while also offering a full food menu, including pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches. This location would be the third for Snitz Creek as they currently operate out of Lebanon and Annville.

Brewery news USA, NY: Former fire station in downtown Mount Vernon to be transformed into a brewery
A group of local investors are moving to transform a former fire station in downtown Mount Vernon into a fully-fledged brewery, The Gazette reported on November 29.

They hope to renovate and reopen the 1969 building as The Old Fire Station, a six-tank brewery with roughly 4,500 square feet, by June 2025.

Mount Vernon is “a destination place people love to come to. There’s just a need for a large space to hold more people and to enhance existing businesses that are here,” said Meridith Hoffman, an Iowa Realty Realtor and partner in the new business that originated with her idea. “There isn’t anything like it around town. It’s something that people enjoy … having in their community.”

Hoffman, who acquired the building from the City of Mount Vernon in 2018 as the city contemplated tearing it down, said the new brewery will help embrace and revitalize the building’s character, history and charm at 217 First St. W. The building has been vacant since the Mount Vernon Fire Department relocated to Second Avenue SW.

“It’s just a neat old building, and it’s loved within the city,” Hoffman said. “I think people just wanted to see something done with it.”

It’s the first brewery in which ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Drawdown Brewing Company aiming at early December opening
Drawdown Brewing Company is slated to open on Washington Street in Egleston Square in early December, with Liz Nicol being behind the business, NBC Boston reported on November 28.

The company press release mentions that the taproom expects to have seating for approximately 36 and a total occupancy of 100 along with a seasonal outdoor area, and it will offer four beers to start--a New England IPA, a Cream Ale, an Alt Bier, and a Porter - while also serving small bites via area dining spots or food trucks.

Nicol, who lives in Jamaica Plain, foresees the brewery as being an integral part of the community, saying that "Drawdown will be a welcoming space for all. We're excited to be part of this vibrant neighborhood which has a reputation for celebrating diversity, uniquely independent businesses and a thriving socially-minded community....I believe we will be the only brewery that will be 100% woman and 100% LGBTQ+ owned in the city of Boston."

Brewery news USA, MN: Brew Lab 101 Beer Company expanding to Minneapolis
New Mexico's Brew Lab 101 Beer Company is expanding to Minneapolis in early 2024, Bring Me The News reported on November 30.

The brewery will open at 25 N. Fourth St. sometime in late January or early February, co-owner Johnathan Welch has confirmed.

The space, next to the Minneapolis Police Department's First Precinct, used to be home to Clockwerks Brewing, which closed its doors in 2021.

Its hours will be 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day, but Welch says he'd like to get some lunch hours open in the future once the business is up and running.

Welch moved with his wife to the city from New Mexico about two-and-a-half years ago and have wanted to be a part of the revitalization efforts of downtown ever since.

"I think it's big to get in [the downtown area] early and start some positive movements and hopefully be a part of revitalizing downtown and making it what it was again," he said.

Welch adds he's hired a local head brewer, Ryan Woodfill, to assist with the production of Minnesota-style beers. Woodfill has been in the Minnesota brewing scene for over 13 years and previously brewed at Canal Park Brewing Company and Lake Superior Brewing in Duluth, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Suspended Brewing Company to move into smaller location in North Baltimore
Pigtown’s Suspended Brewing Company announced plans on November 28 to leave its Washington Boulevard home for a “small, cozy” building in North Baltimore, The Baltimore Banner reported.

The brewery, which has been a neighborhood staple for seven years, will shutter its doors following a celebration on New Year’s Eve. The announcement made on social media brings Suspended into an expanding group of local businesses who have had to close or reinvent due to an inability to recover from pandemic-era losses.

Longtime fans and neighbors of the brewery will be able to stop by for a pint during normal taproom hours Thursday to Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. until Dec. 30.

“Whether you’ve stopped by once, or if our home also became yours, we are truly grateful,” the brewery said in a statement to community members. “This journey would be impossible and meaningless without you.”

Suspended struggled to find its footing following the pandemic. According to their statement, the company “barely made it through,” citing financial strains and an expensive, large taproom as contributors to the closure.

While it remains unclear what building the brewery will be calling home come the new year, they said in their posts that they are confident the move, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Pedro Point Brewing announces permanent closure
Pedro Point Brewing, which opened as Pacifica’s first brewery in March 2018, has permanently closed, Palo Alto Online reported on November 30.

Co-owner and Pacifica resident Roberta Gamble started the microbrewery with a couple of friends, and the operation remained locally focused and owned.

“We really wanted to put something in the Pacific Manor location,” she said. “A couple businesses had recently left. It was nice to bring not just Pacifica’s first brewery, but something to that part of town.”

Over the years, Pedro Point Brewing became known as a family-friendly, dog-friendly Coastside brewery with regular food pop-ups and a weekly trivia night. The business offered a rotation of its own beers and seltzers on-site and at local spots like A Grape in the Fog and the San Benito House.

But the brewery “suffered a downturn like everybody did during the pandemic,” Gamble said.

“We thought more business would come back than actually materialized,” she said. “We were looking for buyers and did entertain very serious offers over the last year, but at the end of the day they didn’t materialize and we decided it was best to close.”

Pedro Point Brewing’s final day of business was Oct. 30.

“There was a lot of surprise, of course, ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Proposed beverage tax framework restructure to bolster tourism and domestic spending
A proposed restructuring of the beverage tax framework is under consideration by the Finance Ministry, as revealed by the permanent finance secretary, Lavaron Sangsnit. The restructure aims to bolster tourism and domestic spending, Thaiger reported on November 30.

This Friday, December 1, Lavaron plans to engage in a discussion with officials from the Customs Department and the Excise Department. The proposed measures align with Thai governmental policies aimed at boosting consumption and tourism.

The first measure proposed focuses on increasing domestic and tourist spending, achieved by the abolition of duty-free shops in the nation’s airport arrival areas. The objective is to encourage tourists to spend more during their stay in Thailand.

The third measure proposes tax incentives to promote products that encapsulate Thailand’s soft power, a move suggested by various industry representatives to the ministry.

The proposed fourth measure looks at the potential relaxation of opening hours for nightlife establishments located in popular tourist areas, as stated by Lavaron.

The fifth measure involves the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which has been tasked with examining the feasibility of extending the visa-free policy to include visitors from a wider range of countries throughout the globe.

These five measures received preliminary approval from the cabinet on November 28, with the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Korean distributor dumps entire inventory of Carlsberg beer after contract dispute
GoldenBlue, a Busan-based whiskey maker and distributor of imported liquor, said it has disposed of its remaining inventory of Carlsberg beer in the aftermath of a so-called gapjil (abuse of power) from its Danish partner back in March, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on November 28.

The discarded Carlsberg products, inclusive of their disposal costs, account for a sum of 490 million won ($378,100).

“As the dispute after halting the distribution of Carlsberg products hasn't been resolved, and with ongoing expenses like storage costs causing further losses, we had no choice but to dispose of all remaining Carlsberg product inventory,” a GoldenBlue official said on November 28. GoldenBlue entered import and distribution contracts with Carlsberg Group in April, 2018. However, Carlsberg Group served a contract termination notice to GoldenBlue this past March, prompting the cessation of its Carlsberg beer distribution. The Korean liquor company called Carlsberg's “unilateral” termination of that contract an act of gapjil. “We have elevated the Carlsberg brand from the Top 15 to the Top 10 position among imported beers in Korea through substantial investments, including new hires and the establishment of a Beer and Spirits division,” a company spokesperson told the Korea JoongAng Daily Tuesday. “While the Carlsberg ...More info on site
