Brewery news USA: All signs point to craft beer output being down in 2023, Brewers Association says
The Brewers Association has said that all signs point to production being down in 2023 — a first (excluding a unique 2020) for BA-defined independent brewers. The association also noted that despite the growing headwinds, there were more brewery openings than closings this year.

The BA reported about 420 brewery openings in 2023 compared to about 380 closings.

No surprises here, but the BA pointed out the primary culprits to declining sales are slowing demand growth, competition from across beverage alcohol, and a retail environment marked by declining draught sales and reduced shelf space for craft.

“Many of craft’s challenges call for new strategies to reach new and existing customers in new occasions with new flavors and innovations,” the BA said in their ‘2023 Year in Beer’ report.

“Amid headwinds, there is good news: the continued overall popularity of the category. Independent brewers still sell more than one out of eight beers in the United States, and consumers spend roughly a quarter of their beer dollars on a beer from a small and independent brewer.”

Supply chain issues moderated somewhat in 2023, but climate change and persisting disruptions challenged brewers throughout the year. Climatic stresses affected the two primary agricultural inputs in brewing: barley ...More info on site

Brewery news Puerto Rico: Beer production decreases in Puerto Rico
Despite the sustained growth of the Puerto Rico craft beer market in recent years, production has been declining compared to previous years, and the experience points to the same trend for the end of this year, The Weekly Journal reported on December 11.

According to the Barth Haas annual report, in 2022 (most recent data) Puerto Rico ranked 102nd internationally, with a production of 1,082 hectolitres of beer, equivalent to 898 barrels, a drop of five steps compared to 2021, when it ranked 97th, with 1,117 hectolitres of production.

"The level of production in Puerto Rico had gone up, but this year there was a decrease, compared to the previous two years," William "Ricky" Quintana, content creator for the RickyCraftBier page on Instagram dedicated to educating about Puerto Rican craft beer, explained to The News Journal.

However, he reported that the decline in 2022 is a trend that has occurred in several countries.

"In the United States, I know there has been a lot of consolidation of breweries. Also because of the economic part there has been a decrease in young people who are becoming interested in beers versus other beverages. Although I don't have precise data in Puerto Rico, talking to people in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Danville Brewing Company planning second location in Pleasanton
Danville Brewing Company is set to make a foray further into the Tri-Valley after years of operating only in its namesake hometown, with a second location in Pleasanton now on the horizon, Pleasanton Weekly reported on December 10.

Company officials announced on social media Nov. 30 they had closed a deal on a lot in the nearby Tri-Valley community that is set to be the site of a second taproom, biergarten and production brewery -- on Utah Street near Stanley Boulevard, a little more than a mile from downtown Pleasanton.

"Next steps are working with our architect and contractor to design the space and figure out the best way to execute our vision," Danville Brewing owner Marcus Maita told the Weekly. "We have a great opportunity with a nice-sized lot to start from scratch, so we definitely want to capitalize on that."

Maita added that while the plans are in their early stages with an uncertain timeline, the company's goal was to have the new location open for business in less than two years.

Pleasanton was a natural location for the brewery to expand to, Maita said, pointing to its similar characteristics to Danville, including a well-trafficked downtown area valued and trafficked by local ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Callister Brewing to close down citing rising costs
After 10 years in business, an East Vancouver brewery is closing its doors, citing rising costs, CityNews Vancouver reported on December 8.

Chris Lay, co-founder of Callister Brewing, says they will not be renewing their five-year lease after their landlord increased the rent by almost 45 per cent.

“That’s a considerable increase,” he said. “It represents thousands of dollars a month, tens of thousands of dollars per year. Across the city and across the country, we’ve seen rents go up considerably, and unfortunately, we are not immune to that.”

Lay says they’ve been looking for a new place, but they haven’t had any luck so far.

“The reality is, even if we go out further from Vancouver, we aren’t seeing better rent,” he said. “The Metro Vancouver area is very similar.”

On top of the increase in operation costs, Lay says there has also been a considerable shift in consumer behaviour.

“With not really an increasing number of consumers, those consumers are making different choices with what they want to spend their hard-earned dollars on,” he said. “We are seeing a bit of downturn together.”

Ken Beattie, the executive director of the BC Craft Brewers Guild, says consumer spending has gone down. While he says this is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Barrel 41 Brewing Co. to close at the end of the year
After five years serving the local craft beer community, Barrel 41 Brewing Co. in Neenah announced on December 11 that it will close at the end of the year, The Post-Crescent reported.

"With the conclusion of our lease, we were tasked with the difficult decision of what to do next," the business said in a post on its Facebook page. "We’ll treasure this chapter and the connections that we made, but have decided to check out what else the future holds for us!"

Located at 1132 S. Commercial St., Barrel 41 began as "a wild idea" between Nathan Sharpless and Lance Goodman to start a brewery in their hometown, and in 2018, that "dream" became a reality, according to the post.

The owners thanked "every person who stepped in our door & experienced the wonder that we set out to create."

The brewery's last day of business is Dec. 31, and "we will happily be pouring beer until the door is closed," the post states.

The owners did not immediately return requests for comment.

Brewery news USA, PA: Moss Mill Brewing to close its doors for good on December 31st
Moss Mill Brewing will be closing its doors in Huntingdon Valley, after serving the community for the past 5+ years. The closing date is set for Sunday, December 31st, Breweries in PA reported on December 11.

The brewery announced the closure on social media last week.

Moss Mill Brewing originally opened their doors in February of 2018 founded by Nick and Evann Rodgers. Their story began much earlier than that when Nick began homebrewing with a kitchen setup and sharing his beer at local beer festivals. In addition Nick spent 7 years at Philadelphia’s Yards Brewing Company where he would work in their brewing lab. It was this experience that lead him to opening Moss Mill where the team there focused on creating small batches, and continuously growing the business.

Their taproom offered guests an intimate setting and interactive craft beer drinking experience. As the business grew so did their location as they would go on to expand by opening an upstairs taproom with a central wrap-around bar, additional TV’s, big screen projector and space for another 120 people. The brewery became well known for their charitable nature from supporting charities related to Autism, Breast Cancer and many other causes.

Brewery news Ireland: Diageo gets approval to construct new brewery in Newbridge, Co Kildare
An Bord Pleanála has given the green light to drinks giant Diageo to construct its planned €200m brewery for Newbridge, Co Kildare, the Irish Examiner reported on December 11.

The new brewery at Littleconnell will create 70 jobs when operational and up to 1,000 jobs during the 20-month construction period.

The new facility, which will operate 24 hours per day 365 days a year, is to brew lagers and ales including Rockshore, Harp, Hop House 13, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, and Carlsberg. As production is transferred to the new facility, it will enable St James’s Gate to increase the production of Guinness to meet global demand.

In a statement, Diageo said it expects to commence construction work on the project “in early 2024”.

A Diageo spokeswoman said: “This €200m investment by Diageo in Ireland will support the growth of our beer brands while meeting our targets to be net zero by 2030. The benefits of this project are compelling and we expect to commence work to commence in early 2024.”

Whisky news Japan & South Korea: Suntory CEO hoping for increase in whisky consumption in South Korea this year
The head of Suntory Holdings is hopeful that highball consumption in South Korea will end up expanding more than twofold this year on the back of a craze for the drink driven by young consumers choosing the company's whisky as an ingredient, Nikkei Asia reported on December 10.

"We'd like to at least achieve a double value of highball sales in [South] Korea with Jim Beam at a core, thanks to the concerted efforts made by the Korean team," Chief Executive Officer Takeshi Niinami said in an interview with Nikkei Asia during a recent visit to South Korea.

Drinking highballs -- which are a type of cocktail composed of a spirit and a carbonated beverage -- with Japanese whisky has become a hot trend among South Korean millennials since the coronavirus pandemic. The global health crisis caused South Koreans to spend more time at home, creating demand for the easily made drinks. Local celebrities also rode the wave by introducing their own recipes.

Experts say that Suntory benefited from the popularity by offering its signature Kakubin blend -- as well as its U.S.-made Jim Beam bourbon whisky -- at reasonable prices compared to Scotch-producing rivals.

Niinami said that South Korean consumers' enthusiasm for the ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Excise taxes on beer and cigarettes on a negative trend in Kenya
Excise taxes on beer and cigarettes – the core products under the tax category— are on a negative trend, reflecting a slowdown in consumption even as revenue from other products under the same tax segment increased, Business Daily Africa reported on December 11.

An excise tax is charged on the sale of a particular good or service.

While excise taxes from beer and cigarettes fell by 0.5 percent and 8.2 percent respectively over the past five years, taxes collected from airtime and financial transactions more than doubled, a Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report shows.

Excise duty on airtime shot up by 117.6 percent to Sh39 billion between 2018 and 2022, with revenues from the tax on financial transactions increasing by 120.6 percent over the same period to Sh40.9 billion.

The trend is being witnessed even as debate rages for the exclusion of non-harmful products from the list of those being charged excise duty, which was created to discourage the consumption of harmful products.

“Excise duty tax was created to target the negative externality or social cost of a product. As such, the tax was designed to target harmful product components or the best available proxy for that externality or cost. This implies that ...More info on site

Brewery news United Arab Emirates: First commercial brewery to open in Abu Dhabi this month
A commercial beer brewery will open in Abu Dhabi later this month, in what will make it the first company allowed to legally sell alcohol made in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the Gulf country loosens socially conservative laws to diversify its economy away from oil.

US-based Craft by Side Hustle will open the brewery and restaurant later this month, Bloomberg reported on December 11, being the first company to take advantage of a rule change Abu Dhabi published in 2021 that allows license holders to ferment alcoholic drinks for consumption on-site.

Previously, the only way a vendor or business could sell beer in the UAE would be if it was manufactured overseas.

Craft by Side Hustle will serve its own beer on tap, brewed on its premises, for around 45 dirhams ($12.25) each, Bloomberg reported. The brewery, which will seat up to 250 people, will also serve Cajun-inspired food. There will be a soft opening of the venue later this month and a grand opening will follow in February.

Brewery news India: Row in Karnataka as state government tells major beer producers to cut on night shifts at their breweries
A row has broken out in South Western India about why the Karantaka state government has told four major international beer producers to cut out the night shift at their breweries, the Drinks Business Review reported on December 11.

The effect will be to curb output of desirable brands, and, say the brewers, cause possible shortages over Christmas and the New Year season, not only in Karanatka, which accounts for about 11% of India’s total beer consumption, but also in regions beyond.

The companies involved are Heineken-controlled United Breweries, Carlsberg, AB InBev and B9 Beverages, all of which have plants in the Mysuru district near Bengaluru, a centre of India’s high-tech industries and one of the most prosperous in the country.

They have been ordered by the state authorities to stop operations between 10pm to 6am because, they are told, of a shortage of full-time excise officials to monitor output and collect relevant taxes.

Permissions to run these “third shift” operations were granted only within the past few weeks.

However, the local authorities are being accused of manipulating the alleged staff shortages to shore up sales of Indian Made Liquours such as whiskies and rums, which generate more revenues than beers.

International spirits and beer brands ...More info on site
