Brewery news Canada, QC: Labatt Breweries invests C$6 mln in Montreal brewery
Labatt Breweries of Canada is investing C$6 million in heat recovery and energy productivity innovation in its Montreal brewery—an enhancement contributing significantly towards the decarbonization of the brewing process through reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The project will have a significant impact on the energy infrastructure of the plant, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, optimizing existing energy infrastructure, and creating scalable solutions for future innovations in the brewery.

"Through this investment and working closely with project partners, we've taken significant steps toward decarbonizing our Montreal brewery," said Sarah Genetti, Vice-President of Procurement & Sustainability, Labatt Breweries of Canada. "With this progress towards carbon neutrality in our Montreal operations, we are another step closer to achieving our ambition of net zero by 2040 across all Labatt breweries coast to coast."

The new heat recovery system will convert previously unused heat expelled from Labatt's refrigeration systems and utilize that heat within the pasteurization process in brewing, in lieu of consuming additional energy to generate the heat needed during pasteurization.

This expenditure comes in conjunction with capital investments in two other Labatt breweries across the country this year—London and St. John's—to fund sustainable packaging innovations and increased production capacity. These investments combined with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Ill Mannered Brewing Company expands to Marysville
There’s a new brewery in central Ohio that boasts more than 2,000 square feet of coziness, complete with exposed brick, original maple and pine wood floors, and outdoor fire pit, located in a historical 1800s building that once housed an antique store, 614NOW reported on December 14.

Ill Mannered Brewing Company, which has already been serving incredible, barrel aged beer at their Powell brewery, has expanded to Marysville, and they’re ready to open this Friday, December 15th, at 3 p.m. Their new space is located at 117 S. Main St.

This new historical space will offer patrons a “pretty special beer drinking experience,” said the brewery’s statement. They’re including the community as much as possible in this space, and they’re all about repurposing what once already was.

The 35 foot bar at this new location is handmade by the head brewer’s dad from 100+ year old reclaimed white oak bar wood. Every piece of barrel wood you see in the space once held IMBC Barrel Aged Beer, including their drinking fountain, and the tables in the taproom are all made by local Marysville artisan, Lenny Garrard.

If you’re planning on stopping in for their well-known, Ohio brewed IPA’s and ales, their hours are 4 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Dorchester Brewing Co. and Aeronaut Brewing Co. team up through a merger
The owners of Dorchester Brewing Co. and Aeronaut Brewing Co. have crafted a new recipe for expansion as their once-fizzy industry goes flat: teaming up through a merger, the Boston Globe reported on December 14.

The Dorchester- and Somerville-based brewers have reached a merger deal that will put Dorchester Brewing cofounder and CEO Matt Malloy in charge of the combined company. Malloy hopes to bring as many as three other regional brewers into the fold eventually, under the new group name, “Tasty Liquid Alliance.”

Employees at both Dorchester Brewing and Aeronaut were informed about the companies’ intent to merge on Thursday. Aeronaut, formed in 2014, will maintain its Somerville taproom but will close its production facility in Everett early next year. It will now brew at Dorchester Brewing’s plant in Boston’s Newmarket area. An Aeronaut taproom at the Everett site will remain open for now, but will likely close in mid-2024.

Aeronaut co-chief executives Dan Rassi and Ronn Friedlander will remain with the combined company, as will most of Aeronaut’s 50 full- and part-time employees. Not all of Aeronaut’s nine production workers in Everett will be offered jobs in Dorchester, but Malloy and Friedlander said it’s still unclear how many of them will ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Labatt invests in expansion of its Calgary-based Banded Peak Brewing
Labatt Breweries has invested US$9.6 million into funding the expansion of its Calgary-based Banded Peak Brewing, The Drinks Business reported on December 15.

Canadian brewing giant Labatt bought Banded Peak back in 2020, but this marks its first wave of support for the brewery which has gained a new a state-of-the-art lab along with more than 7,000 square feet to its original 4,800 square foot space.

According to the company, the investment from Labatt has also funded a bulk grain silo on site in a bid to reduce plastic use in malt shipping as well as coveted the costs of upgraded brewing equipment.

During the expansion, the brewery’s current team has grown by 68%, creating new jobs for front of house, logistics and brewery operations.

Banded Peak Brewing co-founder Colin McLean said: “We’re thrilled that this investment will allow us to continue bringing Calgarians more selections from Banded Peak.“

McLean explained: “This investment cements the fact that we are steadfast in our commitment to producing our beer locally, with new jobs, local ingredients and the type of innovation that continues to make Calgary a great place to live – and work.”

Labatt Breweries of Canada vice president, craft and high end Chad Patterson added: “We’re proud ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario government expanding alcohol sales in province
In a move that some have described as the most significant change in alcohol legislation since the end of prohibition, the Government of Ontario has announced that it will be ending its current Master Framework Agreement (MFA) with The Beer Store, and will be opening up the retail market for beer and other alcoholic beverages to thousands of additional outlets in the province, Canadian Beer News reported on December 14.

The changes were announced during a press conference held on December 14 by Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy, and include the following:

The MFA – which doesn’t allow retailers except for The Beer Store to sell beer in formats larger than six-packs, and caps grocery store sales licenses to 450 locations – will not be renewed past its current term, which ends on December 31st, 2025.

Grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, and big-box retailers in Ontario will be able apply for licenses to sell beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails starting in 2026. Beer Store outlets will also remain in operation.

Retail sales of spirits will remain exclusive to the government-owned LCBO stores.

As at current licensed grocery stores, at least 20 per cent of shelf space for beer at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, Washington DC: Right Proper Brewing Company to open its third location in D.C.’s Eckington neighborhood
Locals will get another option for beer off the Metropolitan Branch Trail with the opening next year of a new Right Proper Brewing Company location in D.C.’s Eckington neighborhood, DCist reported on December 14.

The new brewery, Right Proper’s third location, will be located at 1625 Eckington Place NE, about a block from the trail. The expansion marks a boon for the local beer scene, which has seen some growth in recent years with the addition of new breweries and the buildout of established ones, but also a few prominent closures.

Right Proper hopes to open the brewhouse in the fall of 2024, co-owner Leah Cheston says. Cheston and her partner, Thor Cheston, are eager to be opening another brewery in the city, she said in an interview with DCist/WAMU.

“We feel like we just have a real opportunity with Eckington,” Leah Cheston says. “Being a part of another community, another neighborhood in D.C. — because each neighborhood has its own identity and its own feeling about it — so to be a part of another one is very exciting.”

Right Proper Brewing opened its first location 10 years ago in Shaw. The beer company is known for its diverse, ever-changing selection of craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Atomic Clock Brewing Company opening in Durham in early 2024
Atomic Clock Brewing Company is opening in Durham, NC in early 2024. Started by brother-sister duo, Brian & Colleen Quinn, the brewery will open with two Durham locations. A taproom and full-service kitchen will operate out of a historic building at 501 Washington St in the warehouse district of Durham. Brewing will take place at 606 United Drive on a 20-barrel brewhouse to support immediate demand and provide a runway for growth, Brewbound reported on December 13.

The founders emphasize that they equally value quality of beer and customer experience at Atomic Clock Brewing Company. Of the name, co-founder, Colleen Quinn says, “Atomic clocks are the world’s most precise time-keeping devices and several around the world collectively establish international time. Because of that, we felt the atomic clock represented our brewing philosophy – a continuous pursuit of perfection, a collaborative spirit, and the celebration of innovation.”

Opening in the Triangle was a logical choice for the duo who both graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. Co-founder, Brian Quinn says, “I began my brewing career in Durham, NC years ago, so opening Atomic Clock here feels like a full circle moment. I’m excited to reconnect with the Triangle beer scene that has ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Weathered Souls Brewery looking for investors to prevent closure
When Weathered Souls Brewery Co. opened its Charlotte location in 2022, the news was met with great fanfare, it being the city’s only Black-owned brewery at the time. Now, a year later, the future of the Charlotte location is in doubt, the QCity Metro reported on December 14.

In an exclusive interview with QCity Metro, co-owner Mike Holt said the 255 Clanton Road business is struggling financially and looking for investors to prevent its closure at the end of the year.

“I desperately don’t want to close, but it’s been a drain on the entire company,“ he said.

Out of the nearly 10,000 craft brewers in the United States, fewer than 1% are Black-owned, according to ProBrewer.

Weathered Souls would be the second Black-owned brewery in Charlotte to close in the last five years after Three Spirits closed its doors in 2019.

Holt and Marcus Baskerville opened Weathered Souls in San Antonio, Texas, in 2016. It quickly grew in popularity and has since earned accolades, including “The Best Craft Brewery in the Country” by Hop Culture Magazine.

The duo’s decision to franchise in Charlotte was met with anticipation, primarily due to Baskerville’s national reputation for his work in diversity and inclusion, most notably his Black ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Biggerstaff Brewing Company closing after two years in business
Two years after opening next door to Staplehouse on Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta, brewpub Biggerstaff Brewing Company is closing its doors Saturday, December 16.

“We dearly love Biggerstaff, but due to circumstances beyond our control we are closing our doors,” a statement provided to Eater reads. “We’ll miss seeing our amazing staff and the wonderful people we had the pleasure of serving each day.”

A representative speaking on behalf of Biggerstaff Brewing declined to elaborate on the specific circumstances leading to the decision to close the brewpub and says there are no plans to relocate it and reopen elsewhere in the future.

Owned by Clay and Sarah Davies, Biggerstaff Brewing opened in 2021 serving coffee in the morning, before transitioning the menu to food and beer later in the day. The kitchen became known for its shareable snacks and plates, including charcuterie boards, smoked Vidalia onion rings, crispy cornbread bites, pork belly atop creamy farrow, and beets and brats. A small brewing operation at Biggerstaff saw mostly IPAs, sours, and pale ales produced, many smoked or infused with coffee. Biggerstaff also featured a lively front patio, which was often packed on warmer days with groups coming from the nearby Eastside Beltline trail.

Brewery news USA, IL: Howard Street Brewing Company closing its doors this week
Roger Park’s northernmost brewery is closing its doors this week, but its owner has not ruled out a return in a larger setting, Block Club Chicago reported on December 13.

Howard Street Brewing Company’s last day in business will be Saturday, December 16, ending its one-and-a-half-year run on Howard Street. Owner Chuck Patella said the small space and shifts in the craft beer industry caused the closure.

The microbrewery opened in May 2022 at 1617 W. Howard St., next door to the Factory Theater and just down the street from the Howard station. Patella chose to open in the historical building on Howard Street to serve as a nightlife spot and bring economic activity to the struggling corridor.

Howard Street Brewing operates a one-barrel brewing system, which isn’t much bigger than a typical home brewer’s setup. The taproom seats 37 patrons.

The tight space and business regulations made it hard for Howard Street Brewing to meet consumer demand while adapting to shifts in the craft beer industry, Patella said.

Howard Street Brewing didn’t have space to produce nitro beers or hard seltzers, two popular products. There also wasn’t space for a kitchen, and its license prevents it from offering cocktails or wine, Patella said.

A move ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Byers Brewing Co. planning to close for good
Byers Brewing Co., a local family-owned brewery that opened in DeKalb in 2019, announced on December 13 that it’s planning to close for good, the Shaw Local reported.

The announcement came in a social media post shared by the craft brewery, 230 E. Lincoln Highway.

In a statement, the Byers family and staff thanked the community for its support of the business, saying “we hope to see you again before this chapter ends.”

An attempt to reach the owner for comment Wednesday was not successful.

“The good news is that we are so extremely grateful for all of your support over the last 4-plus years,” according to the statement. “We got to do what we love.”

Byers Brewing Co. recently had obtained emergency financial assistance from the city of DeKalb to fix some equipment at its Sixth Street location.

In February, Byers Brewing Co. was recognized for its contributions to the community as the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Business of the Year.

The brewery’s last day of business is expected about Jan. 31 or when the beer in the taproom runs out, according to the statement.

“If you know anyone interested in a turnkey brewery, we believe this community is wonderful and could support a brewery in ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Stouts and low ABV beers leading demand when it comes to trends for the UK's on-trade
Stouts and low ABV beers are leading the charge when it comes to trends in beer for the on-trade, according to the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA).

The group, which represents around 750 independent breweries in the UK, also says allowing beers of 0.5% ABV and below to be labelled as ‘alcohol-free’ – as they are in both the EU and the US – would help smaller breweries to enter the no and low alcohol market.

On trends, SIBA heads of comms and marketing and beer sommelier Neil Walker, says: “Stout really is going from strength right now and there are some superb examples being made by independent breweries across the whole of the UK.

“Our SIBA Craft Beer Report 2023 showed stout as the most brewed beer style among independent craft brewers with a huge 84% making one – up 25% from 2022.”

Walker continued: “Another trend we’re seeing are more and more breweries dipping their toes into the no and low alcohol market, producing either a lower strength table beer – typically between 2.8% and 3.5% – or an alcohol-free beer of between 0% and 0.5%.

“This comes as changes to the Alcohol Duty system in the UK make the tax on these ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: October malting barley exports down 29% from September
Australia exported 926,675 tonnes of barley and 42,851t of sorghum in October, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on December 13.

Malting barley exports in October totalled 213,531t, down 29 percent from the 301,810t shipped in September.

Feed barley exports more than doubled to mark the opening month of the shipping year, and totaled 713,144t, up from 342,284t exported in September.

China on 540,251t was the destination for 76pc of Australia’s October feed barley exports, with Japan on 99,597t and The Philippines on 62,621t the other volume buyers.

Sorghum exports dived from 271,593t in September to reflect the rundown on available stocks.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said feed barley exports “exploded” in October.

“This was the first month when Chinese export demand was properly reflected on the shipping stem, and there were still some restrictions over total tonnage shipped,” Mr Roache said.

“That’s because many port zones were low on inventory, and were therefore unable to participate until new-crop harvest hits the bins.

“Additionally some other destination business was still being executed including The Philippines, which must be from prior to the China tariff removal as it doesn’t price well now.”

Mr Roache said there was more upside to ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Pernod Ricard looking to triple its net sales in Inda
Pernod Ricard, the world’s second-largest spirits company, is looking to triple its net sales in India over the coming decade as consumers shift from country liquor to its brand of whiskies, and as greater premiumisation drives demand for its imported scotch, its chief executive for India Jean Touboul said.

“India is one of the key markets for Pernod Ricard Group, actually the second by net sales. That’s already critical because of the size and growth profile of the market. There are a lot of tailwinds, from macro-economic factors to the country’s demographics. We need to deliver low-double-digit growth on net sales annually, which is consistent with our vision to triple net sales in India in the coming decade," Touboul was quoted as saying by the Mint on December 13. Pernod Ricard India sells brands such as Royal Stag, Blenders Pride and 100 Pipers, apart from premium international brands such as Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s, Glenlivet and Jameson Irish Whiskey, among others. In India it competes with Diageo, the world's largest spirits company. In fiscal year 2023, India surpassed China to become the second-largest market by net sales for the French spirits company. Whisky news China: Pernod Ricard releases first China whisky
