Russia: Russian court lets local brewer use Carlsberg brands despite Danish firm’s exit
|
A Russian court on December 18 found that Russia's second-largest brewer, Baltika, could continue to use Carlsberg brands even though the Danish brewer has been stripped of control of the firm and revoked Baltika's licences, Reuters reported.
Moscow took control of Carlsberg's stake in July, taking Baltika under "temporary management". That prompted CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen to say Carlsberg's business had been stolen and that his firm would not do any deal to make the seizure look legitimate.
Baltika then sued Carlsberg in Russia for the right to continue using the trademarks, and the arbitration court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region on December 18 ruled in Baltika's favour, the Interfax news agency reported.
"The claim is satisfied in full," it quoted a court document as saying.
A month ago, Denis Sherstennikov and Anton Rogachevsky, Baltika's CEO and vice president, were arrested on suspicion of fraud, accused of transferring some intellectual property rights to Carlsberg illegally as Russia assumed control. Carlsberg said its employes were innocent.
The affair has underlined how difficult it is for Western companies hampered by, or uncomfortable with, the fallout from Moscow's war in Ukraine to extricate themselves from Russia.

USA: AB InBev facing workers strike action
|
The Teamsters union has authorised a strike at AB InBev to put pressure on the beer giant to renegotiate contract terms for its workforce, The Drinks Business reported on December 18.
The union told Fox Business that out of 5,000 members who work at 12 AB InBev breweries in the US, 99% voted to authorise a strike. This means that if the workers cannot secure a new labour contract raising wages, protecting jobs and securing benefits before the union’s contract expires on 29 February 2024, then strikes will take place and beer production will likely become affected.
Teamsters general president Sean O’Brien said: “Teamsters stand firm in our fight for the best contract at Anheuser-Busch, and this powerful strike vote proves it. Our members’ labour, talent, and sacrifice are what put Anheuser-Busch products on the shelf, and we are committed to getting a contract that rewards and recognises their hard work.”
O’Brien explained: “If Anheuser-Busch’s executives can’t get their act together to negotiate an agreement that respects workers, we will see them out on the streets,”
Last month, the union and AB InBev reached tentative agreements on ending tiered health care and restoring retiree health benefits, however the two sides have reportedly failed to

UK & China: Scotch producer Angus Dundee Distillers to build a malt whisky distillery in China
|
Scotch producer Angus Dundee Distillers has revealed plans to build a malt whisky distillery in Chun’an, China, along with a visitor’s experience, The Spirits Business reported on December 19.
The site will be located by Qiandao Lake, also known as the ‘Thousand Island Lake’ for its many islands, and will encompass 20 acres in size. The area is popular with tourists for its scenery and natural beauty.
There are also plans for the ‘world’s largest’ cave whisky maturation cellar, situated within a mountain close to the distillery. Angus Dundee says the stable temperature and humidity inside the cave will provide ‘ideal conditions’ for storing and maturing whisky.
Construction for the distillery is now underway.
Brian Megson, director of Angus Dundee Distillers, said: “This investment is a major milestone for Angus Dundee Distillers and builds on our existing presence in China, a whisky market which we regard as one of the most important for the future.
“We are combining our notable Western heritage in producing the finest Scottish single malts with Eastern traditions in a location of exceptional natural beauty and resources.
“We want to create one of the leading distilleries in Asia, combining world-class whisky production with an outstanding visitor experience.”
The site’s design will stay true
