Brewery news Canada, BC: Britannia Brewing opens its doors in Lake Country
It’s been a long road but Britannia Brewing in Lake Country has opened its doors, Penticton Western News reported on December 15.

After a year and a half of blood, sweat, and tears, co-owner Lloyd Kinney and Operations Manager Justin Fowler couldn’t be happier to open the Central Okanagan’s 25th brewery.

“We’re really excited, it’s been an ongoing construction feat we’ve overcome,” said Kinney. “We had a change in our planning that we had to make some adjustments for. It came down to the finishing touches and sometimes they can be the most finicky and time-consuming.”

“Since we did the ground-up construction, our project goes a little longer than someone who just takes over a pre-existing building,” adds Fowler. “It made it more rewarding and nice to be able to see it from the start to the final product.”

The 10,000-square-foot facility is the new central home for Britannia, which started in Richmond and currently has other locations in Steveston and Ladner. On top of being a brewhouse, it is also their new primary production location, with their award-winning head brewer Mike Nicholson, who has made the move up to the Okanagan.

“We always knew we wanted to add multiple locations, we just didn’t know ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Bandwagon Brewing Company already open for business
The Bandwagon Brewing Company, located at 33 W. Central Ave. in Downtown Moultrie, is open for business, Yahoo News reported on December 16.

The brewery will be open Wednesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sunday, from 12:30 until 9 p.m.

The brewery broke ground in April of this year and held an open house during the Lights! Lights! event on Thanksgiving night that gave residents a sneak-peek inside and a preview of what was to come.

"I want to see it develop into a gathering space for local people. A place for locals to bring their out-of-town guests," said Bill Kimmerly, co-founder of Bandwagon Brewing Company and head brewmaster.

Harrison Isaacs, founder and president of Intrie Capital, the parent company of the Bandwagon Brewing Company, said that his love for his hometown was what solidified his desire to bring an asset like the brewery to the downtown area and he was excited about the possibilities of what the venture could do in terms of being a positive impact on the community.

"It is a fascinating thing, though, brewing beer. I didn't realize, not only the science behind it, but also ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev facing workers strike action
The Teamsters union has authorised a strike at AB InBev to put pressure on the beer giant to renegotiate contract terms for its workforce, The Drinks Business reported on December 18.

The union told Fox Business that out of 5,000 members who work at 12 AB InBev breweries in the US, 99% voted to authorise a strike. This means that if the workers cannot secure a new labour contract raising wages, protecting jobs and securing benefits before the union’s contract expires on 29 February 2024, then strikes will take place and beer production will likely become affected.

Teamsters general president Sean O’Brien said: “Teamsters stand firm in our fight for the best contract at Anheuser-Busch, and this powerful strike vote proves it. Our members’ labour, talent, and sacrifice are what put Anheuser-Busch products on the shelf, and we are committed to getting a contract that rewards and recognises their hard work.”

O’Brien explained: “If Anheuser-Busch’s executives can’t get their act together to negotiate an agreement that respects workers, we will see them out on the streets,”

Last month, the union and AB InBev reached tentative agreements on ending tiered health care and restoring retiree health benefits, however the two sides have reportedly failed to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Third Space Brewing planning second location in Menomonee Falls
Milwaukee's Third Space Brewing is planning to open a second location in Menomonee Falls, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on December 18.

Third Space Innovation Brewhouse has a target opening date of June 2024.

The first phase of the project will focus on opening the taproom and restaurant portions, with the brewery to follow, according to company officials.

Third Space Innovation Brewhouse will be housed the site of the former Trysting Place Pub, a Menomonee Falls favorite that closed in September 2020. The building was torn down and a new development called Fussville Station is now under construction at the site.

Third Space currently operates a Milwaukee taproom and a seasonal Elm Grove beer garden.

“Our current taproom has become well known as the place to be for big events like Wisconsin IPA Fest and Ice Bear Fest, and we have cultivated a great group of regulars who have made our taproom their own 'third space,'" said Andy Gehl, co-founder and president.

"Opening a second location in the heart of where so many people live and work offers a great opportunity for a much larger group of people to connect with the Third Space Brewing brand," he said.

Third Space Innovation Brewhouse will have a different focus ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Burghers Brewing announces soft opening of its third location
After first announcing expansion plans in early 2023, Burghers Brewing has announced the soft opening of their third location, located at The Highline at 319 East Carson Street in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood, Breweries in PA reported on December 18.

In addition to this third location, Burghers also has plans in the works to build a new production facility and restaurant in the near future. The 700 sq/ft South Side space will be both a taproom and a restaurant, with space for 30-40 indoors, and a large biergarden outside. They will serve a limited menu with their popular smash burgers, but an emphasis will be on the beer.

“We fell in love with the beauty and potential of the Highline complex, as well as the unique possibilities of such a challenging and historical space as our new “skinny building”, as it is known. We are hopeful to create a one-of-a-kind dining and social environment on the Southside that will be close, inclusive, and fun for those seeking craft beer and burgers.” says Co-Owner and Head Brewer Neil Glausier

He continues, “This pursuit is parallel to our search for the perfect location to plant our much-needed production facility to fill our, now 3, taprooms ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Assembly Brewing to open its second location in early 2024
Assembly Brewing, the first black-owned brewery in Oregon, has revealed it will open its second location in early 2024, The Drinks Business reported on December 19.

The new venue will be located on NE Alberta Street in the former location of Bella Pizza and, in its new iteration, plans to serve Detroit-style pizzas to guests.

According to the brewer, the site will be open seven days a week from 11am-10pm and also offer a beer and pizza delivery service. The Assembly team have revealed plans to serve up five pizza by-the-slice options along with a beer or fountain drink special.

At the new venue, Assembly’s beer will be available from eight taps along with cider, wines, and a selection of cocktails and spirits.

Assembly Brewery owner, brewmaster and chef George Johnson said: “Whether it’s through beer, pizza, a love of sports or perhaps trivia, we’re excited to try a few new things in 2024.”

Johnson revealed that he originally crafted the proprietary dough recipe for the new site with the assistance of legendary pizza chef Shawn Randazzo, who died back in 2020 and will be bringing the Detroit-style pizza – which has a rectangular shape and extra thick crust – to the area.

Johnson, who was ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Lemonstreet Brewing Co. closes its doors permanently
Lemonstreet Brewing Co. closed its doors for the final time Dec. 17, four years after coming to life in a renovated industrial building in the Rail Yard District, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported.

Owner Joe Baez cited inflation and lingering effects of the pandemic as key factors in the closure, saying COVID-related restrictions that were imposed six months after Lemonstreet’s September 2019 opening put the business in a financial hole from which it could never fully recover.

The brewery, at 2100 Dennis St., qualified for a small amount of pandemic relief funding, he said, but not enough to prevent its prolonged closure from sapping its working capital and leaving it without resources to promote the business and draw attention to its off-the-beaten-path location.

The global inflation increase was the “final dagger,” Baez said, causing a 30% increase in business costs due to rising prices for utilities and supplies. As an example, his monthly bill for carbon dioxide, which provides the carbonation that gives beer its bubbles, more than doubled.

Baez said he spoke with several potential investors this year in an effort to keep the brewery open, but to no avail.

Lemonstreet was family-owned and operated, with Baez and his wife making ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Rock House Brewing closing its doors but possibly only temporarily
A Northside Lexington brewery is closing its doors but possibly only temporarily, Yahoo News reported on December 19.

Friday Dec. 22 is your last chance to share a beer at Rock House Brewing at 119 Luigart Court just off North Limestone near Loudon Avenue at least for now.

But if a potential sale is finalized it could come back soon.

The current owners announced in November that the craft brewery was for sale.

Brewery news Russia: Russian court lets local brewer use Carlsberg brands despite Danish firm’s exit
A Russian court on December 18 found that Russia's second-largest brewer, Baltika, could continue to use Carlsberg brands even though the Danish brewer has been stripped of control of the firm and revoked Baltika's licences, Reuters reported.

Moscow took control of Carlsberg's stake in July, taking Baltika under "temporary management". That prompted CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen to say Carlsberg's business had been stolen and that his firm would not do any deal to make the seizure look legitimate.

Baltika then sued Carlsberg in Russia for the right to continue using the trademarks, and the arbitration court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region on December 18 ruled in Baltika's favour, the Interfax news agency reported.

"The claim is satisfied in full," it quoted a court document as saying.

A month ago, Denis Sherstennikov and Anton Rogachevsky, Baltika's CEO and vice president, were arrested on suspicion of fraud, accused of transferring some intellectual property rights to Carlsberg illegally as Russia assumed control. Carlsberg said its employes were innocent.

The affair has underlined how difficult it is for Western companies hampered by, or uncomfortable with, the fallout from Moscow's war in Ukraine to extricate themselves from Russia.

Whisky news UK & China: Scotch producer Angus Dundee Distillers to build a malt whisky distillery in China
Scotch producer Angus Dundee Distillers has revealed plans to build a malt whisky distillery in Chun’an, China, along with a visitor’s experience, The Spirits Business reported on December 19.

The site will be located by Qiandao Lake, also known as the ‘Thousand Island Lake’ for its many islands, and will encompass 20 acres in size. The area is popular with tourists for its scenery and natural beauty.

There are also plans for the ‘world’s largest’ cave whisky maturation cellar, situated within a mountain close to the distillery. Angus Dundee says the stable temperature and humidity inside the cave will provide ‘ideal conditions’ for storing and maturing whisky.

Construction for the distillery is now underway.

Brian Megson, director of Angus Dundee Distillers, said: “This investment is a major milestone for Angus Dundee Distillers and builds on our existing presence in China, a whisky market which we regard as one of the most important for the future.

“We are combining our notable Western heritage in producing the finest Scottish single malts with Eastern traditions in a location of exceptional natural beauty and resources.

“We want to create one of the leading distilleries in Asia, combining world-class whisky production with an outstanding visitor experience.”

The site’s design will stay true ...More info on site
