Ethiopia: Ethiopia’s leading brewer BGI embarks on massive expansion
|
BGI-Ethiopia, the leading brewery in Ethiopia, has embarked on massive expansion launching its VISION 2028, which aims to transform the company and secure its market leadership, New Business Ethiopia reported on December 20.
The company is set to invest heavily in its operations, production network, and distribution model. This investment plan involves increasing production capacity and relocating the historic Addis Ababa plant to its two breweries in Sebeta and Maichew.
“The investment is one of the major projects we are running to make our company operationally more competitive and continue to provide the best products to our consumers,” said Herve Milhade at the press conference given on December 20 at Sheraton Addis Hotel.
BGI-Ethiopia’s strategic transformation came following the continued environmental changes in the Ethiopian market, the entire industry competitiveness, and the willingness to speed the company’s growth and improve its organizational engagement and mindset.
The transformation is believed to bring a full-fledged change to the company’s operations and the way it does business. “Our vision is to double our production capacity in the coming years and bring our volume close to 10 million hl annually,” said Milhade.

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries shareholders approve acquisition of Distell Nigeria
|
Shareholders of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Nigeria’s foremost brewing company, have approved the acquisition of an 80 per cent stake in Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria Limited (Distell Nigeria) and the import business of Heineken Beverages (Holdings) Limited (Heineken Beverages), Tribune Online reported on December 21.
The approval was given at the company’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos.
With this development, the Board will proceed to conclude the transaction that will give Nigerian Breweries Plc the majority stake in Distell Nigeria and the exclusive right to import, market, and distribute in Nigeria, Heineken Beverages’ wines, spirits, and ciders brands from South Africa, including the right to produce any of the imported brands locally.
Speaking during the Extraordinary General Meeting, the Board Chairman, Asue Ighodalo, explained that the acquisition aligns with the company’s vision to become a Total Beverage Company, by adding wines and spirits to the product portfolio to cater to its diverse consumer needs.
“This acquisition is part of efforts to provide access to a complementary multi-category portfolio of fast-growing brands of wines and spirits market segment and capture significant growth opportunities in the wines and spirits segment of the brewing industry,” Ighodalo stated.

Chile: Chilean craft brewers suing beer giant CCU for unfair trade practices
|
Craft beer-makers in Chile are joining an antitrust suit against Latin American beverage giant Cia. Cervecerias Unidas SA in a bid to eliminate trade practices they say are stifling sales at bars and restaurants, BNN Bloomberg reported on December 21.
The South American country’s antitrust tribunal accepted a petition by the association of independent brewers, ACI, to join a case brought by competition authority FNE, court documents show. In a parallel case, a unit of Belgium’s Anheuser-Busch InBev is also suing CCU, part of a long-running legal battle between the two heavyweights in Latin America.
Chile’s independent beer-makers represented by ACI allege that market leader CCU, controlled by the country’s richest family, engages in publicity arrangements with restaurants and bars that restrict access to competing labels. Craft sales have stagnated at about 1% of the Chilean beer market as a result, they say. Santiago-based CCU didn’t provide a comment.
“Consumers should have access to different types of beers, beers of high quality,” ACI President Luis de Urruticoechea said in an interview. “Today, we are just 1% of the market. Imagine the additional sales if that were to rise to 5%, or 20% as is the case in the US.”

Denmark: Royal Unibrew acquires Danish beer brand Too Old To Die Young
|
Royal Unibrew has strengthened its domestic beer presence with the acquisition of Danish beer brand Too Old To Die Young, local media reported on December 21.
The Nordic beverage group has been distributing Too Old To Die Young’s beer portfolio, available in the on-premise in Denmark, since April 2022.
The deal, for an undisclosed sum, will see Royal Unibrew take over production, sales and marketing of the brand from its founders as well as rights to the brand from nightlife conglomerate Rekom Group.
Too Old To Die Young’s founders will join Royal Unibrew and “continue to contribute their expertise”, the company said in a statement.
Faxe, Denmark-headquartered Royal Unibrew said Too Old To Die Young was “a strong and exciting brand with significant potential”.
A spokesperson said: “We see strength in expanding our craft beer portfolio and allowing each of our brands to play its role for the benefit of our customers and consumers, providing them with more choices… With Too Old To Die Young, we are now even stronger in the premium craft segment.”

Canada: Barley move into feed channels to be curtailed by large corn imports from the US
|
Canada’s larger barley crop in 2023/24 should see more of the grain move into feed channels than the year before, but domestic usage will remain curtailed by large corn imports from the United States, Canadian Cattlemen reported on December 22.
Recently revised supply/demand tables from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada raised the forecast for domestic barley usage in the current crop year to 6.155 million tonnes. That compares with an earlier forecast of 5.471 million tonnes. If realized, that would be up by roughly 200,000 tonnes from the previous year.
Meanwhile, AAFC lowered their estimate for corn imports to 2.500 million tonnes from an earlier forecast of 2.800 million tonnes. That would still be up from the 2.147 million tonnes imported in 2022/23, but well below the record 6.141 million tonnes of corn imported in 2021/22 when Canadian feed supplies were decimated by drought.
Prior to the drought year Canadian corn imports had rarely topped two million tonnes, with a five-year average of about 1.7 million tonnes annually from 2016/17 through 2020/21.
