UK: Fire crews tackle smoulder at Muntons Suffolk malting plant
|
A Suffolk maltings supplier saw more than 100 tonnes of its product destroyed as a total of nine fire engines were called to tackle a blaze, the East Anglian Daily Times reported on January 6.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service sent the fire crews to Muntons, off Needham Road in Stowmarket, at 9.50pm on Thursday, January 5, after a fire had been reported at the site.
The scene had been made safe by about 4.40am on Friday, January 6, after crews tackled a smoulder in the facility for about seven hours during the night.
A spokeswoman for Muntons issued an update that said: "There was a smoulder in the intake driers, affecting around 130 tonnes of barley.
"The fire brigade responded quickly to our early warning system.
"We had a total of nine vehicles on site, with four engines that rotated in shift throughout the night to diligently dampen all the barley affected.
"We are pleased to report that the smoulder was contained and has now been entirely eliminated.
"The site is up and running as usual, so there is no risk of a chocolate, malt loaf or beer shortage."

Ethiopia: BGI Ethiopia acquisition of Meta Abo Brewery signed off by Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration
|
The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration has approved the acquisition of Meta Abo Brewery by BGI Ethiopia, The Reporter Ethiopia said on January 2.
A letter dated January 1, 2024, and signed by Fiseha Yitagesu, a state minister of Trade, notifies the Ethiopian Investment Commission, the Documents Authentication and Registration Service, and both companies involved in the acquisition that the federal government has signed off on the deal.
Officials at the Trade Ministry have been evaluating the acquisition since receiving the paperwork two months ago, although BGI Ethiopia first announced it had bought out Meta Abo from Diageo in January 2022.
A report from the Ministry reveals concerns of an “oligopoly market structure” in the brewery and distillery industry, as the number of manufacturers drops down to six following BGI’s acquisition.
Nonetheless, the Ministry concluded that all shares, assets, and debts under Meta Abo will be transferred to BGI Ethiopia.
The Ministry has ordered BGI Ethiopia to avoid trade practices that affect competition in the brewery industry, not to abuse the high market share it now possesses, and to adopt a fair and just distribution mechanism.

Malaysia: Beer sector expected to benefit from tourism recovery
|
Brewers in Malaysia are expected to benefit from a boost in beer consumption fuelled by tourism recovery, the New Straits Times reported on January 4.
"We have BUY ratings on both the brewers as we opine they offer exposure to the tourism recovery angle which still has legs to go. Between the two – Carlsberg Malaysia Bhd (target price (TP): RM30.31) and Heineken Malaysia Bhd (TP: RM29.94) – we favour the former for exposure," Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd research (HLIB research) said in its note.
The lower prices of tin and barley are also expected to contribute to a more favourable margin outlook for brewers upon the renewal of fixed-price contracts.
The firm has an Overweight rating on the sector.
"With the anticipation of reduced cost pressures, we do not foresee a significant increase in beer average selling price (ASP) that could potentially impact consumer demand," HLIB research said.
In the first eight months of 2023, foreign tourist arrivals in Malaysia reached 13.0 million, putting the nation on track to meet its 2023 target of 18 million (+79.7 per cent year-on-year (YoY) set by Tourism Malaysia.

Thailand: Analysts like ThaiBev’s prospects after Thai government approved tax cuts on alcoholic beverages
|
Analysts from CGS-CIMB Research, DBS Group Research and KGI Research are keeping their “add” and “buy” calls on Thai Beverage Y92 0.00% (ThaiBev) after the Thai government announced that it will be reducing its domestic alcohol tax for a year on Jan 2, The Edge Singapore reported.
The move comes as the Thai government seeks to boost the country’s tourism and economy.
Approved measures include the exemption of import tariffs on wine, reducing excise taxes on wine and eliminating taxes on local spirits. The excise tax on entertainment venues will also be halved.
The measures are expected to take effect shortly and will expire at the end of this year.
“The tax cuts came as positive surprise to us as we had previously thought an excise tax rate hike for alcoholic beverages in calendar year (CY) 2024 was likely in a bid to fund the Thai government’s economic stimulus measures,” write CGS-CIMB analysts Ong Khang Chuen and Kenneth Tan, although they expect ThaiBev to only partially pass on the lowered taxes to its consumers.

World: Diageo shares trading at their lowest since 2020 amid trouble with Chinese trade
|
Shares at Guinness maker Diageo are now trading at their lowest level since November 2020, in the face of weakening sales and trouble with Chinese trade, Yahoo Finance reported on January 6.
The share price of the British multinational took a two per cent tumble this morning, as news of China’s ‘anti-dumping’ investigation into brandy from the European Union scared investors off.
A probe was launched by officials of the Asian country on January 6 after a complaint was filed back in November by China’s liquor association.
It solidifies an escalating spat between Beijing and Brussels — initially kick-started by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen who claimed that global markets were “flooded with cheaper Chinese electric cars”.
Von der Leyen launched an investigation back in September, sparking retaliation from the Asian superpower.
Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said: “Anti-dumping is an import duty charged in addition to normal customs duty and can be levied when a foreign company sells an item significantly below their normal price.
“This represents yet another point of tension between China and the West and suggests geopolitical developments could be a key worry point for markets in 2024.”

Japan & USA: Asahi Group buys Octopi Brewing, plans brewing Super Dry beer in the US for the first time
|
Japan's Asahi Group Holdings has bought U.S.-based Octopi Brewing and will use the contract beverage maker's facility to brew its flagship Super Dry beer in the U.S. for the first time, the Nikkei Asia reported on January 6.
Asahi subsidiary Asahi Europe & International acquired Wisconsin-based Octopi. Financial terms of the deal and Octopi's sales figures were not disclosed.
The North American market accounts for 7% of Super Dry sales, or about 700,000 cases in 2022. The beer has been made in Japan or Italy and exported to North America.
Asahi plans to make about 700,000 cases of beer at Octopi's brewery, equivalent to the amount exported to the region. Additional investments will be considered.
Asahi is targeting Super Dry sales volume growth in the mid-10% range or greater every year through 2030. The company has expanded through acquisitions in Europe and Australia, but its lack of a manufacturing base in North America has been a hurdle to a wider reach.
First sold in 1987, Super Dry regained the top spot in Japan's beer market in 2022 from longtime rival Kirin.
Octopi, which was founded in 2014 and has about 200 employees, makes beer and non-alcoholic drinks.

UK: Heineken sells historic Caledonian Brewery site to developers
|
Heineken has sold Edinburgh’s historic Caledonian Brewery site to the property developers Artisan Real Estate, The Drinks Business reported on January 5.
The historic 1.9-acre brewery in Shandon will be turned into new homes and, according to local reports, the developer has already submitted its Proposal of Application Notice with a public consultation scheduled to be held on 7 February 2024.
Prior to Heineken closing the the Caledonian Brewery in 2022, it was Edinburgh’s last major brewery and had been founded in 1869 by George Lorimer and Robert Clark. The brewery, along with its B-listed Victorian buildings, reportedly used traditional brewing methods and open square fermenters and direct-fired copper kettles.
Despite passing through a range of ownerships during the past two centuries, the brewery was most recently operated by Heineken from 2008 after it had been acquired as an assets of then owner Scottish and Newcastle. However, in May 2022, Heineken announced the closure of the Caledonian Brewery and placed the site on the market, leaving the historic buildings vulnerable to property developers.

The Czech Republic: Draft beer prices rising in Prague due to large jump in VAT
|
Prices for draft beer in the Czech capital are rising due to a large jump in the value-added tax (VAT) on it – from 10 to 21 percent – that came into force this year. According to data from Dotykačka, a company that analyzes cash register data, the average price for a pint of 12-degree beer in Prague is now more than CZK 70, Expats.cz reported on January 5.
Analysis from Dotykačka shows that a pint of draft beer in Prague restaurants was CZK 64.3 on average last July. In 2022, it was around CZK 59 and in 2021 the average stood at CZK 52. Today, the average hovers around CZK 73.
Now, Prague restaurants have raised their prices by an average of CZK 3 to CZK 4 per pint due to the VAT change, as well as the rising costs of operating breweries. Some establishments, such as one on Národní trida, have even increased their prices by as much as CZK 8. Other large chains in Prague opted to pre-emptively raise prices in November or December 2023.

UK: Four spring barley varieties make up majority of seed sales in England
|
Just four spring barley varieties make up the majority of seed sales in England, despite there being many more choices on the AHDB Recommended List, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on January 2.
The testing system for the brewing and distilling use of spring barley varieties is out of kilter with the recommendation process, meaning that the most recent variety introductions are often of least interest to growers.
“New varieties with malting potential are added to the list before they undergo testing by the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain (MAGB) for their suitability, so they tend to come in under the radar,” explains Niab cereals specialist Clare Leaman.
“It means that growers don’t move onto new ones until they’ve been approved and they can be sure of their place in the market.”
The latest list for 2024/25 has been reorganised, so that fully approved varieties are grouped separately to those that are provisionally approved or about to undergo evaluation.
“That’s a good development,” she notes. “It makes things clearer and will help growers get more from the information.”

Ukraine: 2023/24 barley exports total 1.074 mln tonnes as of January 2
|
In the 2023/2024 marketing year (MY) (from July 1 to January 2, 2024), Ukraine exported 18.393 million tonnes of grains and legumes.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
In the current MY Ukraine has already exported 7.597 million tonnes of wheat, 1.074 million tonnes of barley, 1,000 tonnes of rye, and 9.579 million tonnes of corn.
For comparison, from July 1 to January 2, 2022/2023, Ukraine exported 22.761 million tonnes of grains and pulses, including 8.411 million tonnes of wheat, 1.626 million tonnes of barley, 12,500 tonnes of rye, and 12.639 million tonnes of corn.

Thailand: Government approves slashing taxes on wine and spirits to boost tourism
|
Thailand’s cabinet has approved slashing taxes on wine and spirits in a bid to promote tourism.
Lawan Saengsanit, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance, revealed on Tuesday (2 January) that excise taxes on wine will be reduced from 10% to 5% and on spirits from 10% to zero.
Import tariffs on wines, currently assessed at 54% and 60% of declared value, will also be exempted for one year.
Additionally, the excise tax on entertainment venues will be halved, dropping from 10% to 5%. These tax adjustments will be in place till the end of this year, according to a filing from Thailand’s Ministry of Finance.
According to the Bangkok Post, the Thai Excise Department collected Bt177.6bn ($5.7bn) in alcohol, beer and beverage taxes in its fiscal 2023. The figure included Bt64.17bn from alcoholic beverages, Bt86.5bn from beer and Bt26.95bn from other beverages.
Last year, Thailand reached its target of 28m tourists, generating Bt1.2tn, government data showed.
