Brewery news USA, CO: Milieu Fermentation to open in former Ursula Brewery space in Aurora
Beer drinkers will find a new brewery in a familiar location this spring when Milieu Fermentation opens in the former Ursula Brewery space at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, the Denver Post reported on January 4.

Founded by Rob Bessett — the award-winning former head brewer at both Ursula and Loveland’s Verboten Brewing — and Andrew Bergeron, who works as a financial and budget analyst, Milieu (the name is stylized with lower-case letters) will specialize in lagers and hoppy beers.

“With my background and personal passion for barrel aging I’m excited to get a fair amount of spon, mixed culture, stout and barleywine into oak” as well, said Bessett via email. Bessett was heavily involved in Verboten’s barrel-aged beers, which are frequent award winners.

“There are plans for a seasonally released saison and lots of highly fruited acid-forward beers,” he added. “The alternative fermentations and non-alcoholic options will then round out the remainder of the draft list. The idea is to have an option for everyone who comes through our doors.”

Bessett and Bergeron chose the word “milieu” because it “represents the place, time, and circumstances in which our socialization occurs,” Bessett wrote. “In other words: the vibe.”

Brewery news USA, WI: Pals Brewing Company coming to Wisconsin Dells by the end of the year
A new brewery restaurant is coming to Wisconsin Dells at the end of 2024 in a joint venture between Chula Vista Resort and a Nebraska-based brewery, Wiscnews.com reported on January 1.

Pals Brewing Company, which has its first location in North Platte, Nebraska, is opening an indoor-outdoor facility on the west side of Wisconsin Dells in a partnership with the Kaminski family, which owns Chula Vista Resort. The future brewpub and family restaurant, which will also be called Pals Brewing Company, is slated to seat just over 500 guests between its indoor and outdoor facilities and will serve a wide array of foods, deliver pizza, and feature a large assortment of beers and related drinks, nearly all of which are company brews.

“It literally is like your friend,” said Pete Oettinger, a co-owner of Pals. “The tagline is ‘Come as strangers, leave as pals.’”

Mike Kaminski and his family, along with the Oettinger family, which owns Pals, teamed up to begin the venture roughly three years ago. The Wisconsin Dells Common Council approved plans for the family restaurant, which is slated to open on Dec. 1, 2024, and will feature three bar areas, roughly 20 beer taps, a dog-friendly outdoor area, and a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: K2 Brothers Brewing to open a new location in Walworth
The former Freewill Elementary School in Walworth, which has been vacant since its closure in June 2017, is undergoing a dramatic transformation.

K2 Brothers Brewing, a local craft beer company, has taken over the property at 4320 Canandaigua Road with ambitious plans to convert it into a multi-purpose venue.

The brothers behind K2, Brad and Kyle Kennedy, were drawn to the former school for its expansive indoor space of over 72,000 square feet and nearly 42 acres of property.

Their vision includes turning the former gymnasium into a 20-barrel brew house with a substantial fermentation capacity. The project, initiated in May, is moving at full speed to be ready for opening in the coming weeks.

The transformation of the old school into “K2 at Freewill” aims to create an adult playground, complete with indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces, meeting rooms, gaming machines, and more.

The facility will feature a large commercial kitchen, a bar situated in the former cafeteria, and 30 draught lines offering a variety of craft beers, ciders, and cocktails. While maintaining their flagship location on Empire Boulevard, the Kennedys plan to use this new facility to expand their operations across New York and beyond. Emphasizing community integration, the space will retain elements ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & USA: Asahi Group buys Octopi Brewing, plans brewing Super Dry beer in the US for the first time
Japan's Asahi Group Holdings has bought U.S.-based Octopi Brewing and will use the contract beverage maker's facility to brew its flagship Super Dry beer in the U.S. for the first time, the Nikkei Asia reported on January 6.

Asahi subsidiary Asahi Europe & International acquired Wisconsin-based Octopi. Financial terms of the deal and Octopi's sales figures were not disclosed.

The North American market accounts for 7% of Super Dry sales, or about 700,000 cases in 2022. The beer has been made in Japan or Italy and exported to North America.

Asahi plans to make about 700,000 cases of beer at Octopi's brewery, equivalent to the amount exported to the region. Additional investments will be considered.

Asahi is targeting Super Dry sales volume growth in the mid-10% range or greater every year through 2030. The company has expanded through acquisitions in Europe and Australia, but its lack of a manufacturing base in North America has been a hurdle to a wider reach.

First sold in 1987, Super Dry regained the top spot in Japan's beer market in 2022 from longtime rival Kirin.

Octopi, which was founded in 2014 and has about 200 employees, makes beer and non-alcoholic drinks.

Japanese beer brands have struggled to break into the North ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Wine overtakes beer as BC drinkers’ preferred summer beverage
Wine overtook beer as B.C. drinkers' preferred summer beverage purchase, according to new data from the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch (BCLDB), biv.com reported on January 4.

B.C. drinkers shifted spending away from beer and toward wine, spirits and coolers in the three months that ended Sept. 30, the BCLDB's latest quarterly numbers suggest.

The province's booze seller releases data for how much it generated before tax when selling products wholesale to its own liquor stores, private stores, restaurants and bars. Data is not available for how much is spent on booze in B.C. after those buyers mark up products to gain a profit margin.

The latest quarterly report found that all those alcohol buyers in B.C. spent C$984,789,974 on inventory in the quarter ended Sept. 30 – 2.4 per cent more than in the same quarter in 2022.

Beer wholesales were down 4.35 per cent, to C$298,840,413, while wholesales for wine rose 4.45 per cent to C$305,072,495 year-over-year in the quarter. In the same quarter in 2022, the C$312,426,833 spent on wholesale beer orders in B.C. towered nearly seven per cent above the C$292,084,996 spent on orders for wine inventory.

Beer wholesales in B.C. on a volume basis dropped 7.7 per cent ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Flying Fish Brewing Co. files for bankruptcy
New Jersey brewery Flying Fish has filed for bankruptcy after a planned sale to Cape May Brewing Co collapsed, The Drinks Business reported on January 2.

Flying Fish Brewing Co, based in Somerdale New Jersey, has filed for bankruptcy protection after a sale of its assets to Cape May Brewing Co failed to go through.

The bankruptcy petition, filed by Flying Fish in late December, lists US$1.3 million in assets, including brewing equipment worth an estimated US$500,000. The beer company also declared US$9.3 million in liabilities to multiple creditors.

Flying Fish, which distributes its beers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, was acquired by investment firm Elk Lake Capital in 2016, and was eyeing a sale to fellow New Jersey brewing business Cape May after experiencing a sharp decline in revenue last year.

Having previously generated a gross annual revenue of around US$4 million for the past few years, in 2023 Flying Fish saw this dip to US$3.1 million.

Its financial woes follow a US$6 million expansion in 2012, which included the construction of a new tasting room.

Craft beer company Cape May announced plans to buy the ailing company’s assets in April 2023 in order to boost its own production capacity and warehouse space, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Local Remedy Brewing gets conditional-use permit to open new location in Oakmont
Locally made craft beer will soon come to 531 Allegheny Ave in Oakmont, PA as Local Remedy Brewing was recently awarded a conditional-use permit to open in the space. The location was formerly the home of Oakmont Bakery after the bakery moved to a new location in Oakmont, Breweries in PA reported on January 5.

For those who have followed the Pennsylvania Homebrew Invitational, the name Local Remedy should sound familiar. The brewery competed in the 2023 competition placing first overall in the Pittsburgh region. Local Remedy is led by Matt Synan, along with his team which includes Dan Silianoff, Joe Vickless, Sean Williamson, Brian “BJ” Swartzlander and Sean Rogan.

“We’ve all been separately passionate about beer and brewing for more than a decade, eventually coming together to brew as a group a few years ago. As we got more serious about brewing we found ourselves falling in love with the creative process, but even more so with sharing our beer with people outside of our group” Synan said about the team behind the brand,” Synan said.

In a recent TribLive article Synan was quoted as discussing why this location was so important to him. “I grew up not too far from Oakmont. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Guardian Brewing Co. in Saugatuck to close on March 17
There's only a couple months left to get a pint or two at Guardian Brewing Co. in Saugatuck, FOX 2 Detroit reported on January 5.

After announcing plans to leave Michigan last year, the brewery shared its official closing date, March 17.

Guardian's owners said they will be moving to Bloomington, Ind. due to family health. This will get them closer to needed medical facilities and allow them to better help the family members who need them. The plan is to open a brewery in Indiana, though there is no timeline for that project yet.

For now, Guardian will be selling the rest of its beer, merchandise, and parts of the taproom, like tap handles. Grains, hops, and other brewing supplies are up for grabs as well. The brewery said to expect deals from now through the closing date.

If you're doing Dry January, the brewery said there are non-alcoholic options available, so you can visit and still have a drink.

Guardian is also offering $10 mug club memberships that are good from now until March 17.

The brewery is at 3657 63rd St. in Saugatuck. It opened in 2018 and has become a hub for events, including markets and beer schools hosted by ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Collision Bend Brewing Co. holds grand opening of second location in Euclid
Collision Bend Brewing Co. marked the commencement of a new chapter with the grand opening of its second location in Euclid, Ohio, on January 5. After years of meticulous planning and overcoming construction hurdles, the brewery-taproom-kitchen opened its doors to the public, adding to the industrial charm of the region, BNN Breaking reported on January 5.

The new facility, nestled next to an Amazon warehouse in an industrial park, boasts a 30-barrel brewing system, doubling the capacity of the 15-barrel system at the original Flats East Side location. Spanning approximately 25,000 square feet, the Euclid site incorporates a myriad of functional spaces, including a loading dock, milling room, and laboratory. While the taproom welcomed patrons today, the full production facility is slated for operation in the upcoming months.

While brewer Ben Northeim expressed his thrill for the grand opening, he will primarily oversee operations at the downtown location. The reins of the Euclid site have been handed over to Rory Schecter, who will ensure the smooth functioning of what is anticipated to become the hub of Collision Bend Brewing Co.’s beer production for distribution. The original location, on the other hand, will continue to serve patrons with on-premise consumption.

The grand opening was ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing sells to local buyers
A pillar of the Santa Cruz craft beer community has sold—and the buyers include another local craft beer operation that’s become an area institution in its own right, Edible Monterey Bay reported on January 2.

Westside-sown and -grown Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing has been acquired by Adair Paterno of internationally celebrated Sante Adairius Rustic Ales and Brad Clark of Private Press Brewing on Ingalls Street, which focuses on malt-forward and barrel-aged craft beer.

Launched in 2005, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing has long paved the way on female-led, organic and sustainable brewing practices.

Combined with the fact it stands as the oldest continuously operating brewery in Santa Cruz County, SCMB represents both a pioneer and a bedrock for the Surf City craft brew community.

To put it another way, if there was a Mount Rushmore for regional brewers, SCMB’s inclusion would be a no-brainer.

After nearly two decades, Emily Thomas and Chad Brill, co-owners at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, were ready to make the move—albeit reluctantly.

Thomas calls the sale “a significant milestone.”

“Chad and I have loved this brewery and the community we built,” says Thomas, who Edible profiled in 2016. “While the decision to sell has been incredibly difficult, we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Elder Brewing Company confirms closure
After several days of rumors that Elder Brewing Company was closing for good, the owners made the announcement official on Wednesday, January 3: Elder Brewing Company is done. It lasted for six years and two months. Its closure leaves Joliet with zero microbreweries, the Patch reported.

Elder opened in November 2017, which was four months after MyGrain Brewing opened in the historic Union Train Station. MyGrain Brewing folded last August and its property remains empty.

"It is with sadness that we announce the closure of Elder Brewing Co. We are incredibly thankful for this experience and your support over the last 6+ years. Our lives, the world, and the economy have all changed drastically since we began this adventure, and we don’t have the resources to continue down the current path," Elder Brewing posted on its Facebook page.

Joliet Patch wrote a handful of stories on Elder during its first several years of operation. Elder was owned and operated by Andrew Polykandriotes and his wife Melissa.

"We want Joliet to be a craft beer destination," Elder Brewing Company owner Andrew Polykandriotis told Joliet Patch back in 2017. "We just make beer here, and we want to make it right. Beer and memories."

Brewery news Ethiopia: BGI Ethiopia acquisition of Meta Abo Brewery signed off by Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration
The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration has approved the acquisition of Meta Abo Brewery by BGI Ethiopia, The Reporter Ethiopia said on January 2.

A letter dated January 1, 2024, and signed by Fiseha Yitagesu, a state minister of Trade, notifies the Ethiopian Investment Commission, the Documents Authentication and Registration Service, and both companies involved in the acquisition that the federal government has signed off on the deal.

Officials at the Trade Ministry have been evaluating the acquisition since receiving the paperwork two months ago, although BGI Ethiopia first announced it had bought out Meta Abo from Diageo in January 2022.

A report from the Ministry reveals concerns of an “oligopoly market structure” in the brewery and distillery industry, as the number of manufacturers drops down to six following BGI’s acquisition. Nonetheless, the Ministry concluded that all shares, assets, and debts under Meta Abo will be transferred to BGI Ethiopia.

The Ministry has ordered BGI Ethiopia to avoid trade practices that affect competition in the brewery industry, not to abuse the high market share it now possesses, and to adopt a fair and just distribution mechanism.

BGI Ethiopia is also obliged to maintain Meta Abo’s workforce and employee benefits, as well as the Meta ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Beer sector expected to benefit from tourism recovery
Brewers in Malaysia are expected to benefit from a boost in beer consumption fuelled by tourism recovery, the New Straits Times reported on January 4.

"We have BUY ratings on both the brewers as we opine they offer exposure to the tourism recovery angle which still has legs to go. Between the two – Carlsberg Malaysia Bhd (target price (TP): RM30.31) and Heineken Malaysia Bhd (TP: RM29.94) – we favour the former for exposure," Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd research (HLIB research) said in its note.

The lower prices of tin and barley are also expected to contribute to a more favourable margin outlook for brewers upon the renewal of fixed-price contracts.

The firm has an Overweight rating on the sector.

"With the anticipation of reduced cost pressures, we do not foresee a significant increase in beer average selling price (ASP) that could potentially impact consumer demand," HLIB research said.

In the first eight months of 2023, foreign tourist arrivals in Malaysia reached 13.0 million, putting the nation on track to meet its 2023 target of 18 million (+79.7 per cent year-on-year (YoY) set by Tourism Malaysia.

HLIB research said while this trajectory is encouraging, it remains notably below the pre-pandemic level of 26.1 million ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Analysts like ThaiBev’s prospects after Thai government approved tax cuts on alcoholic beverages
Analysts from CGS-CIMB Research, DBS Group Research and KGI Research are keeping their “add” and “buy” calls on Thai Beverage Y92 0.00% (ThaiBev) after the Thai government announced that it will be reducing its domestic alcohol tax for a year on Jan 2, The Edge Singapore reported.

The move comes as the Thai government seeks to boost the country’s tourism and economy.

Approved measures include the exemption of import tariffs on wine, reducing excise taxes on wine and eliminating taxes on local spirits. The excise tax on entertainment venues will also be halved.

The measures are expected to take effect shortly and will expire at the end of this year.

“The tax cuts came as positive surprise to us as we had previously thought an excise tax rate hike for alcoholic beverages in calendar year (CY) 2024 was likely in a bid to fund the Thai government’s economic stimulus measures,” write CGS-CIMB analysts Ong Khang Chuen and Kenneth Tan, although they expect ThaiBev to only partially pass on the lowered taxes to its consumers.

“While we await the publication of ministerial regulations for more clarity on the approved tax cuts, we carried out a sensitivity analysis on FY2024 ending Sept 30 net profit growth (assuming ...More info on site

Malt news UK: Fire crews tackle smoulder at Muntons Suffolk malting plant
A Suffolk maltings supplier saw more than 100 tonnes of its product destroyed as a total of nine fire engines were called to tackle a blaze, the East Anglian Daily Times reported on January 6.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service sent the fire crews to Muntons, off Needham Road in Stowmarket, at 9.50pm on Thursday, January 5, after a fire had been reported at the site.

The scene had been made safe by about 4.40am on Friday, January 6, after crews tackled a smoulder in the facility for about seven hours during the night.

A spokeswoman for Muntons issued an update that said: "There was a smoulder in the intake driers, affecting around 130 tonnes of barley.

"The fire brigade responded quickly to our early warning system.

"We had a total of nine vehicles on site, with four engines that rotated in shift throughout the night to diligently dampen all the barley affected.

"We are pleased to report that the smoulder was contained and has now been entirely eliminated.

"The site is up and running as usual, so there is no risk of a chocolate, malt loaf or beer shortage."

Initial reports suggested that up to 16 crews had been called to the smoulder, including teams from ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Diageo shares trading at their lowest since 2020 amid trouble with Chinese trade
Shares at Guinness maker Diageo are now trading at their lowest level since November 2020, in the face of weakening sales and trouble with Chinese trade, Yahoo Finance reported on January 6.

The share price of the British multinational took a two per cent tumble this morning, as news of China’s ‘anti-dumping’ investigation into brandy from the European Union scared investors off.

A probe was launched by officials of the Asian country on January 6 after a complaint was filed back in November by China’s liquor association.

It solidifies an escalating spat between Beijing and Brussels — initially kick-started by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen who claimed that global markets were “flooded with cheaper Chinese electric cars”.

Von der Leyen launched an investigation back in September, sparking retaliation from the Asian superpower.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said: “Anti-dumping is an import duty charged in addition to normal customs duty and can be levied when a foreign company sells an item significantly below their normal price.

“This represents yet another point of tension between China and the West and suggests geopolitical developments could be a key worry point for markets in 2024.”

A clampdown in China will serve as another blow for ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Four spring barley varieties make up majority of seed sales in England
Just four spring barley varieties make up the majority of seed sales in England, despite there being many more choices on the AHDB Recommended List, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on January 2.

The testing system for the brewing and distilling use of spring barley varieties is out of kilter with the recommendation process, meaning that the most recent variety introductions are often of least interest to growers.

“New varieties with malting potential are added to the list before they undergo testing by the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain (MAGB) for their suitability, so they tend to come in under the radar,” explains Niab cereals specialist Clare Leaman.

“It means that growers don’t move onto new ones until they’ve been approved and they can be sure of their place in the market.”

The latest list for 2024/25 has been reorganised, so that fully approved varieties are grouped separately to those that are provisionally approved or about to undergo evaluation.

“That’s a good development,” she notes. “It makes things clearer and will help growers get more from the information.”

Approval takes a number of years, with varieties given provisional approval before becoming fully approved – creating a time lag with new introductions, but sending clear signals about end ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken sells historic Caledonian Brewery site to developers
Heineken has sold Edinburgh’s historic Caledonian Brewery site to the property developers Artisan Real Estate, The Drinks Business reported on January 5.

The historic 1.9-acre brewery in Shandon will be turned into new homes and, according to local reports, the developer has already submitted its Proposal of Application Notice with a public consultation scheduled to be held on 7 February 2024.

Prior to Heineken closing the the Caledonian Brewery in 2022, it was Edinburgh’s last major brewery and had been founded in 1869 by George Lorimer and Robert Clark. The brewery, along with its B-listed Victorian buildings, reportedly used traditional brewing methods and open square fermenters and direct-fired copper kettles.

Despite passing through a range of ownerships during the past two centuries, the brewery was most recently operated by Heineken from 2008 after it had been acquired as an assets of then owner Scottish and Newcastle. However, in May 2022, Heineken announced the closure of the Caledonian Brewery and placed the site on the market, leaving the historic buildings vulnerable to property developers.

Lamenting about the site being turned into houses, one Redditer stated: “Nothing against new homes, but for Heineken to take over and shut the site (despite making 4.5 billion euro profit ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Draft beer prices rising in Prague due to large jump in VAT
Prices for draft beer in the Czech capital are rising due to a large jump in the value-added tax (VAT) on it – from 10 to 21 percent – that came into force this year. According to data from Dotykačka, a company that analyzes cash register data, the average price for a pint of 12-degree beer in Prague is now more than CZK 70, Expats.cz reported on January 5.

Analysis from Dotykačka shows that a pint of draft beer in Prague restaurants was CZK 64.3 on average last July. In 2022, it was around CZK 59 and in 2021 the average stood at CZK 52. Today, the average hovers around CZK 73.

Now, Prague restaurants have raised their prices by an average of CZK 3 to CZK 4 per pint due to the VAT change, as well as the rising costs of operating breweries. Some establishments, such as one on Národní trida, have even increased their prices by as much as CZK 8. Other large chains in Prague opted to pre-emptively raise prices in November or December 2023.
