Brewery news Sri Lanka: Distilleries Company acquires Heineken’s Lankan business
Business tycoon Harry Jayawardena-controlled Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka (DCSL) has acquired the local operations of global beer giant Heineken for Euro 12 million or over Rs. 4.2 billion, the Daily FT reported on January 12.

In a disclosure to the Colombo Stock Exchange, DCSL said it acquired 99.4% of the issued capital of Heineken Lanka Ltd., from Heineken Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (Heineken) for a total consideration of Euro 12 million. With this acquisition, Heineken Lanka Ltd., will change its name to DCSL Breweries Lanka Ltd. to reflect the new ownership.

The company will continue brewing beer under world-renowned international brands such as Heineken, Tiger, and Anchor under a Trademark Licence Agreement signed with the Heineken Company. It will also continue to brew its own brand, Bison beer.

“This acquisition and the continued production of world-renowned Heineken brands under license will ensure that consumers can continue to enjoy these brands,” DCSL said.

It also said the DCSL Group, a pioneer in the liquor industry in Sri Lanka with well over a century of producing quality products, will now add beer to its diverse product portfolio.

The impending deal was first announced by DCSL in November last year.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Budějovický Budvar brews record volume in 2023, expects record sales too
Budějovický Budvar brewed a record 1.865 million hectolitres of beer last year, up 4.3 percent year-on-year, the head of the brewery Petr Dvořák told the ctk news agency.

The brewery expects record sales of more than CZK 3 billion in 2023, Dvořák said.

This year, Budvar is planning to spend CZK 60 million to expand its capacity to gradually increase production to 2.1 million hectolitres.

In 2026, it plans to start upgrading its visitor center and grounds at a cost of hundreds of millions.

Budvar raised the price of its beers between 5 and 8 percent at the end of last year, and says it is not planning a further increase this year.

Thai Beverage—controlled by billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi—has revamped its management to boost operating efficiencies as the maker of Chang beer expands across Southeast Asia, Forbes reported on January 11.

The company said it has named Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi, son of ThaiBev’s founder and chairman, as group CEO and first vice chairman. Kosit Suksingha has been appointed president and chief operating officer overseeing the group’s Thai businesses, while Prapakon Thongtheppairot assumes the role of president and group chief operating officer managing international operations. Both executives will report to Thapana.

The changes, which will take effect on June 27, will help enhance operational synergies across its key Southeast Asia markets, comprising Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore, the Bangkok-based company said in a regulatory filing. The revamp will also “expedite business development and investment in new markets to support growth of our regional brand portfolio,” it added.

Whisky news France: Beam Suntory France officially begins operations
Beam Suntory France has officially begun operations and is directly responsible for the marketing and distribution of its portfolio in France.

According to the company, the establishment of Beam Suntory France will support its global strategic focus on building its premium portfolio and strengthen its position in the European market.

Anne Miller, general manager of Beam Suntory France, said: “We want to be the leader in premium whisky in France, and we are proud to be able to bring legendary brands like Yamazaki, Hibiki, Laphroaig, Bowmore and Maker’s Mark directly to our customers. We have built a strong, experienced team in Paris, and we are looking forward to building a successful premium business together.

“Paris is a global luxury capital and France is the leading whisky market in Europe. With direct control over our brands in our market, we’ll be able to bring even more value to our customers, operate with greater agility and direct market insights, and ultimately accelerate growth and build brand power in this important market.”

Beam Suntory France now comprises a team of approximately 30 people across sales, marketing, finance and supply chain.
