USA, OH: Ghost Tree Brewing Co. expanding within Lorain County
|
Ghost Tree Brewing Co. is expanding within Lorain County, Cleveland.com reported on January 15.
The original location, a 100-plus year-old building at 223 Church St. in Amherst, is 12 miles away from the quiet industrial-park space in Elyria that covers about 2,800 square feet, said the brewery’s John Rush, who operates Ghost Tree with Dan Blatt and Brian Mastellone.
Rush designed the grain-mill setup, and they installed new flooring - imperative for breweries with large tanks that must maintain a level, and sturdy, foundation. The entire place was designed to accommodate expansion.
As Blatt said, the Amherst location had “zero space” for more of, well, anything.
Rush said they all incurred “a lot of bumps and bruises from moving around over there.” It’s a workout, too: They brew beer and send it down to the basement, then have to haul it back up the steps.
Now, a truck will be able to roll up, drop off grain and head out. And they have elbow room and decent grain storage, he said.
“You could play basketball in there,” Mastellone said of the huge walk-in cooler.

USA, MA: Article Fifteen Brewing closing at the end of the month

Last Call is coming for Article Fifteen Brewing, The Patriot Ledger reported on January 14.
After four years in business in Weymouth and Rockland, the brew house on VFW Drive is closing at the end of the month.
"It's been a fun ride, but every road comes to an end," the business announced in a Facebook post.
In the post, Article Fifteen cited "the burdens of inflation, the rising costs of materials and equipment maintenance combined with the constant regulatory challenges presented to us since our move have made it clear that we had to make the hardest of decisions."
The business plans to open Friday and Saturday nights through the end of the month.
The mircobrewery began on Washington Street in Weymouth 2017, closing in September 2019. In a search for a larger space, officials found the Rockland location. At 10,000 square feet, which was more than three times the size of its original home, the new location allowed the mircobrewery to expand production and add a canning line as well as offer live music and larger events. It opened July 1, 2022, in a space previously occupied by Kathy Corrigan’s School of Gymnastics at 406 VFW Drive.

USA, CA: Bagby Beer Company sold to Orange County brewer Green Cheek Beer Company

Bagby Beer Company is leaving downtown Oceanside after the husband-and-wife ownership team sold their award-winning business to Orange County brewer Green Cheek Beer Company, the Coast News reported on January 16.
Bagby Beer, located on South Coast Highway 101, announced last week on social media that the changeover is expected “sometime in the mid-first quarter of 2024.”
“The time has at last come for a change here at Bagby Beer Company,” a Bagby announcement reads. “Our brewery has been the singular focus of our lives and has been a deeply felt, extraordinarily personal endeavor from inception. We’ve hoped to share our love for great things of top quality through countless expressions — large and small — that collectively have become the Bagby experience for our guests and employees.”
According to the 10-year-old brewery, the business had been struggling to return to pre-COVID-19 numbers, which resulted in its decision to hand over its space and operations to Green Cheek Beer.

USA, IN: Switchyard Brewing Co. shutting down after this weekend
|
Bloomington’s Switchyard Brewing Co. is shutting down after this weekend, the Indiana Public Media reported on January 13.
Switchyard’s taproom on North Walnut Street will serve drinks one last time Sunday, a statement posted to social media said.
“We invite you for a pint or slice to share moments with our incredible staff. Let’s celebrate the community and memories we’ve cherished,” the post said.
“As we say goodbye, we remind you of the importance of supporting local, independent businesses. Your patronage to these community owned businesses sustains our community’s unique character and vibrancy,” it said.
“While not the ending we envisioned, we’re proud of our impact on the community we’ve served. Your support and shared moments have been our greatest joy. As we turn to a new chapter, we carry the friendships and joy we’ve found here.”
According to the company, gift cards can be redeemed in person through the weekend. It will offer refunds through its website starting Monday.
The announcement didn’t say exactly why the brewery was closing down.
In October, Switchyard announced plans to offer supporters a chance to become direct shareholders in the future of the company.
It set a goal of raising $150,000 for the “Community Equity Round” initiative.

USA, NJ: Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing closing its doors after 10 years in business
|
After 10 years, Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing is closing its doors, but not of its own volition, the Courier-Post reported on January 12.
The brewery and tasting room announced on Facebook on January 12 it had lost its lease in Cherry Hill.
The farewell, signed by owner Jamie Queli, explained that the brewery's neighbor had "leased out the space from underneath us," and despite attempts to sign a lease extension, the location will be shutting its doors.
"We are extremely disappointed and quite frankly, appalled at the actions of both companies and their adamant refusals to negotiate with us," the statement read.
Less than an hour after its posting, over 350 reactions and 130 comments flooded the business's Facebook.
"Wow this is really heartbreaking," commented PHL17 TV's Tony Romeo.
The business will be operating within its normal hours and serving tasting room visitors until Feb. 29.
Attempts to reach the property owner have not yet been successful.

Denmark: Carlsberg buys stake in craft brewer Mikkeller
|
Danish brewery Mikkeller, which is known for its craft beers and distinctive bars, is to be backed by a giant of the brewing industry.
An agreement has been reached for Carlsberg to buy a 20 percent stake in Mikkeller, the company said in a statement on January 16.
The partnership will allow Mikkeller's beer to reach far more customers than it does currently, the craft beer specialist said in the statement.
Founded in 2006 by former maths teacher Mikkel Bjergsø, the Mikkeller brand has become a highly recognisable and valuable one in Denmark with distinctive packaging, scores of trendy looking bars in Copenhagen and other Danish cities, and a strong international profile.
The company is currently present in more than 40 markets and has bars in cities including Tokyo, London and Berlin.
"When I dedicated myself to brewing beer almost 20 years ago, it was with big gestures and an ambition to give far more people access to high-quality beer," Mikkeller CEO Bjergsø said in the statement.
"We have offered our customers quality beer for many years but have lacked well-established sales channels," he said.
Bjergsø will retain a majority of shares in his company and will also continue as CEO, the statement confirmed.

Cyprus: Beer sales see 1.5% surge last year
|
In a frothy turn of events, Cyprus witnessed a 1.5% surge in total beer sales last year, with a notable 9% boost in exports. According to the data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), the island nation guzzled down a total of 42.13 million litres of beer in 2023, celebrating a spirited rise from 41.49 million in 2022, Knews-Kathimerini reported on January 15.
Locals were spotted raising their glasses, contributing to a 1.1% increase in beer consumption for local pleasure, sipping their way through 36.69 million litres in 2023.
The real party, however, happened on the global stage, with beer exports enjoying an 8.9% annual growth, reaching a respectable 2.44 million litres in 2023. Cystat added some hoppy details, highlighting the surge from 2.24 million litres in the previous year.
December brought a slight hangover as total beer deliveries took a 13.3% dip year on year. UK: Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company invests more than GBP10 mln in its Northampton Brewery
|
Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) has invested more than £10m in the modernisation of its filling and packaging equipment at its Northampton Brewery in an effort to makes its production operations more sustainable, Food Manufacture reported on January 16.
At the heart of the investment were two new machines from KHS – the Innofill Can DVD filler and the Innopack Kisters Nature Multipack packer. According to KHS, the pair will reduce water consumption and use of plastic packaging.
Edgar-George Petsche, executive vice-president of market zone Europe at KHS, said: “Energy-efficient lines and machines and safe, environmentally friendly packaging systems are key components of our sustainability strategy.
“With this latest investment in our pioneering packaging system and the trust shown in our flexible can filler, we’re proud to be helping to responsibly protect our climate together with CMBC as their reliable partner.”
CMBC’s investment in a further Innopack Kisters NMP packer enables the number of packs produced to be doubled thanks to its increased capacity of up to 108,000 cans per hour.

Belgium: Kestemont Brewery joins the High Council for Artisanal Lambic Beers
|
Kestemont Brewery, based in Dilbeek in Belgium, has officially joined the High Council for Artisanal Lambic Beers (HORAL), The Drinks Business reported on January 15.
In addition to Kestemont, 12 other lambic brewers and gueuze blenders from the Pajottenland and the Senne Valley are HORAL members and together they represent more than 80% of traditional lambic production.
The non-profit organisation, which aims to promote and protect traditional lambic beers, particularly the Oude Geuze and Oude Kriek, also organises the Toer de Geuze – a weekend event which sees each brewery open its doors to the public. The next Toer de Geuze will take place from 4-5 May 2024 and will include all HOREL members as well as newcomer Kestemont.
Back in 2017, the Kestemont family bought the partially restored buildings of the former Goossens brewery in Sint-Gertrudis-Pede, a hamlet in Dilbeek and in 2019 Lias Kestemont and his brother-in-law Wim Krieckemans ordered their first shipment of wort at the Den Herberg brewery.
Kestemont said: “We let it mature in oak barrels in the large barn. Two years later, we invested in our brewing equipment, with which we can brew 1,500 litres at a time.”
He explained: “Our lambic stock currently amounts to around 700 hectolitres.

World: AB InBev becomes International Olympic Committee’s worldwide partner until 2028

The International Olympic Committee has named AB InBev as its worldwide partner until 2028, following the news that Asahi pulled out of its Paris sponsorship deal due to Russia’s presence at the games, The Drinks Business reported on January 15.
Belgian multinational brewer AB InBev announced on Friday, January 12 that its alcohol-free brand Corona Cero will be the global beer sponsor of the Olympic Games.
Its new global sponsorship deal, the first of its kind, will see the brewing giant activate at the 2024, 2026, and 2028 Olympic games.
AB InBev CEO Michel Doukeris said of the new deal: “Beer is the beverage of moderation and choice, and so it’s fitting to lead with Corona Cero, for this occasion.”
French law prohibits the sale or distribution of alcohol in stadiums, and the organisers of the Paris Olympics have not applied for an exemption. However, the same rule does not apply to VIP hospitality at events, meaning alcohol can still be served in those areas.
As part of the announcement AB InBev also revealed that its Michelob Ultra beer (3.5% ABV) will support the Olympics through the Olympic and Paralympic Games LA 2028.

Ukraine: 2023/24 barley exports total 1.173 mln tonnes as of January 12th
|
In the 2023/2024 marketing year (MY) (from July 1 to January 12, 2024), Ukraine exported 20.239 million tonnes of grains and legumes.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
In the current MY Ukraine has already exported 8.069 million tonnes of wheat, 1.173 million tonnes of barley, 1,000 tonnes of rye, and 10.85 million tonnes of corn.
In comparison, from July 1 to January 13, 2022/2023, Ukraine exported 24.208 million tonnes of grains and pulses, including 8.802 million tonnes of wheat, 1.693 million tonnes of barley, 12,500 tonnes of rye, and 13.626 million tonnes of corn.
During 11 days of January 2024, Ukraine exported 1.773 million tonnes of grains and pulses (during 12 days of January last year - 1.462 million tonnes), including 445,000 tonnes of wheat (391,000 tonnes in January last year), 99,000 tonnes of barley (67,000 tonnes), and 1.224 million tonnes of corn (1.002 million tonnes). In January 2024 and in January last year, Ukraine did not export rye.
As of January 12, 2023/2024 MY, Ukraine exported 61,000 tonnes of flour (from July 1 to January 13, 2022/2023 MY, 72,900 tonnes were exported).
